“The VC fandom has easily the best approach to the problematic aspects of canon I’ve ever seen from any fandom I’ve been in.”
There are a ton of problematic aspects in this canon, and it’s been so good to watch (and participate sometimes) when our fandom ppl have public discussions considering these problematic aspects within the context of the times those things take place in, the (subconcious and conscious) motivations of the characters, etc., in a thoughtful and respectful manner to canon and eachother.
One of the reasons I love fiction in general is that it offers “to hold as ‘twere the mirror up to nature,” as Shakespeare put it (Hamlet). Fiction can be considered a speculative reality in which we can have problematic things happen and see them play out fully, to better examine why they happen, and how they might be prevented in the future.
