Wow, bold of you to consider him as a favorite! I’m rarely asked about Magnus. If I might ask, why is he one of your faves? He is like the ultimate Your Fave is Problematic bc of the way he was first introduced in canon, forcing Lestat into vampirism and all that. Lestat pretty much forgives him at this point, having tried going back to mortality and been very unhappy with it, you could say Lestat finally got to make the choice he didn’t have originally well, *sigh* a whole essay could be written about Lestat and choosing to vampire.
Magnus tells his story in Prince Lestat! That he was a great Parisian alchemist. It’s glossed over fairly quickly, there could be more to Magnus. He was in Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis, we’ll probably see more of him.

I flit back and forth between this fandom (my first real fandom!) and Breaking Bad but this burst of energy and enthusiasm of late has sucked me right back in, dammit.

♛I would say that the resemblance is uncanny… in more ways than one. Yes, budding youth, handsome, blue eyes and blond hair. Even the expression in the painted portrait we see of Prince Adam is a familiar expression of mine *winks*
I relate deeply to that story. If I’m the Beast, and I’m constantly swooning over Louis’s slightest glance at me, does that make him Beauty? Probably.
As much as I do praise myself (and others do, as well!) to the high heavens for my looks… Being at home in my own body has been, and still is, a constant a struggle. It’s a love-hate relationship with the mirror. As often as I say it, the impact remains the same: my reflection has startled me on more than one occasion, it’s depressed me, it’s made me almost lose the will to live. There were times that I couldn’t look in a mirror. I wouldn’t wish that feeling on my worst enemy.
There is a real horror in what we are, hosts to a vampiric parasite. That moment of awakening, that first breath after the change. Beautiful and monstrous all in one. And each time I survive something and my reflection shows me something close to what I was before all this happened, that’s a small comfort.
OMFG no really can we talk about parallels between these stories.

Let’s talk about how Belle and Louis are both pretty brunette book nerds.
Lestat experiences horrific changes to himself (his soul and his body both) throughout his life that turn him into a literal monster and he’s often terrified by his own body.
Belle basically winds up with Stockholm Syndrome, HI LOUIS. Like, the Beast keeps her captive for selfish reasons, eventually he grows on her. Louis entered this relationship with his eyes a little more open, and he was enthralled by Lestat in the very beginning, but Lestat did trap him there by withholding Important Vampire Information AND ALSO trapping him with a kid. Claudia is basically the library in this analogy.

The story of Beauty and the Beast is far older than the Disney movie (1991) and has been adapted many times over, I wouldn’t be surprised if AR had drawn on some of that story – or any of the various adaptations – for inspiration as TVL was published in 1985. Still, it’s worth comparing this Disney version (or the story itself) with TVL, being made within the same decade. Maybe the Disney ppl were influenced by AR ;]

Interview with the Vampire is a lot of things. A queer love story. A moving depiction of debilitating depression. Sometimes heartrending in its prose and sometimes an equally beautiful trainwreck. Frequently problematic from a modern perspective and yet unspeakably important as both an influential work of vampire fiction and one of the few widely-available works for queer kids to see themselves in. Above all, it’s dear to my heart. Which is probably why I spent several months flailing over it in considerable detail (along with the culture and various adaptations around it).

‘Coven Leader,’ well… I just do what I do. I won’t deny that I like titles in the abstract, but wouldn’t a Coven Leader also have authoritative responsibilities? And have to appoint ppl to their Dark Cabinet, and arrange Dark Events on their Dark Calendar? Wait, I do do that, to some extent (@vcsecretgiftssignups are still open till 12/2!)… maybe “coven leader” in all lower case letters fits better, less pressure. I’m more of a ‘coven cheerleader’ bc I am mired in this positivity loop and I love encouraging fanworks.
I want to address smtg regarding my place in the fandom, since we’re on the topic.
Someone* recently told me that as a monolith of the fandom I have an obligation to
acknowledge what’s troubling about canon, breed awareness of who controls the narrative of culture and who that harms. I feel that this kind of analysis is a different kind of fanwork, an engagement done with as much love as in the creation of fanart, fanfic, cosplay, etc. It’s valuable and worth our attention.
One major reason I haven’t made or promoted much of this kind of commentary is that I don’t want to offend AR and get this blog shut down for an opinion that I may not even agree with. In the not-so-distant past, she has been known to react negatively to any review of her works that had even the faintest whiff of criticism. So when I share these potentially provocative posts w/ you I may choose to do so as a link, rather than reblog the thread itself, so that it’s clear that it’s not an opinion born from this blog, and ppl can engage with it separately.
TL;DR: As a Coven Leader, I do believe that this kind of analysis/commentary is equally valuable as all other fanworks.

Re: “Coven Leader”: While I recognize that many ppl may want to give me a fandom title out of love and appreciation, even if they’re just being that kind of internet-effusive and not really serious, I’m putting up a lot of resistance bc I’ve seen ppl put on a pedestal here and then knocked down, bullied off the site entirely. Whether that was for good reason(s) or not, w/o knowing the truth we can only see from the outside that it appeared to be based on jealousy of that “internet fame.” That may have been the reason, maybe there were no good reasons. Some ppl just like to watch the world burn. So I don’t need to be singled out and given a title or fame when that’s the reaction it can produce. I wouldn’t want to have to turn off Anons.
I know that there are ppl out there who probably do despise me already bc of internet fame alone, and to them: I’m sorry that you have to see my blog all over the place, I’m sorry if it bothers you, please block me, make your tumblr a happy place for you!
