Dark Gift Policy is a bitch.
Y’know I have to give you some credit for choosing Santiago bc he does not get nearly enough attention. Yes he’s a terrible, awful, monster, but he was a great character, a fantastic actor, a cruel antagonist… it takes some effort to be that evil!
I suspect and there is a secret fanfic that supports this theory that Santiago considered himself 2nd-in-command and maybe more to Armand, and he felt himself very usurped when Louis came into the picture, and had it in for Louis from the first moment Armand made heart-eyes at Louis.
Santiago deserved some decent backstory.

MY favorite character of IWTV… that’s tough. In terms of the movie I think all of the actors (even Antonio!!!) did a fantastic job with their roles. I’d go with Claudia only because she was just the perfect mix of sweetness and icy screamy-ness and just had Louis wrapped around her little finger.

In book!IWTV it’s Lestat who’s my fave… How can you not love him with this combination (and more!) of character traits: Charismatic, mixing silly with sinister, mysteriously hinting at a rich and traumatic backstory (which we definitely got later), and of course, lastly, intensely handsome.

inspired by this Game of Thrones post right here.

Santiago is a horrible monster, but there was something magnetic about him all the same, maybe due to his insistence on Obeying the Rules w/ Extreme Sass. To be such a fantastic antagonist, just what was his DAMAGE, y’know? just want more of his backstory!

Looking at this production still, they must have filmed the trial under TdV scene… another cut scene ;A;
From Interview with the Vampire:
“And then I saw Lestat- the blow that was more crippling than any blow. Lestat, standing there in the center of the ballroom, erect, his gray eyes sharp and focused, his mouth lengthening in a cunning smile. Impeccably dressed he was, as always, and as splendid an his rich black cloak and fine linen. But those scars still scored every inch of his white flesh. And how they distorted the taut, handsome face, the fine, hard threads cutting the delicate skin above his lip, the lids of his eyes, the smooth rise of his forehead. And the eyes, they burned with a silent rage that seemed infused with vanity, an awful relentless vanity that said,‘See what I am.’
”’This is the one?’ said Santiago, thrusting me forward.
“But Lestat turned sharply to him and said in a harsh low voice,’I told you I wanted Claudia, the child! She was the one!’ And now I saw his head moving involuntarily with his outburst, and his hand reaching out as if for the arm of a chair only to close as he drew himself up again, eyes to me.
…”’She did it to me, Louis. She did it to me. You didn’t! She has to die’ said Lestat, his voice becoming thin, rasping, as if it were an effort for him to speak.’“
From The Vampire Lestat:
"Get clothing for him,” Armand said. His hand was resting on my shoulder. “He must look presentable, our lost lord,” he told them. “That was always his way.” …
“You will say what I have told you to say.”
It was a mob tribunal of monsters, white-faced demons shouting accusations, Louis pleading desperately, Claudia staring at me mute, and my saying, yes, she was the one who did it, yes, and then cursing Armand as he shoved me back into the shadows, his innocent face radiant as ever.
“But you have done well, Lestat. You have done well.”

Santiago goes through such a spectrum of facial expression in less than 4 seconds (rendered it out at ½ speed so we can watch him do it better):

Interview illustrations : Louis and Claudia by dididouli
Here is Louis trying to protect Claudia when the theatre finally comes for them..
These are a couple of years old, I made illustrations for Interview with the Vampire and actually got an A for it (yay me). it was all made in China ink.
I worked on these pieces like mad at the time (I had a hundred of bad sketches all around my desk) and that’s how I learned to draw freely and SEEMINGLY effortlessly with a pen and ink.
So always remember to practice practice practice and look up a lot of references and then try to copy the technique and then practice again.. it’s the only way to get better.

Production still, Stephen Rea (Santiago) getting ready for his Fred Astaire maneuver
