And now a warning about drafts

codenamecesare:

bogleech:

You ever write up a post you decide will be too controversial or embarrassing but leave it in your drafts to sleep on and then forget about it? How about real personal stuff you weren’t sure you wanted to share at the time? Heavy-ass receipts on bad shit you’re leaving there only just in case you’re forced to use them?

Well if any of your drafts get flagged by the new system, a mod can apparently see them in with all your other flagged posts, and if they un-flag them, it publishes them automatically as a brand new post. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!

…I have 485 drafts.

Time to fix that, I guess.

I have… 8,673 drafts… *laughcries* I’M A MEDIA HOARDER OK??

Shout-out to my fellow Fandom Olds who lived through Strikethrough/Boldthrough on LJ and knew this day would eventually come here on Tumblr.com also

Especial shout-out to the heroes at AO3 who designed their whole operation knowing that every other platform fandom used would pull this bullshit sooner or later

Somehow, it seems to come for every place that isn’t maintained by fandom-savvy people and built specifically around a core of protection for freedom of expression. Which is why I’m not super stoked to see so many people bailing to Twitter, of all places. Jack can’t even handle nazis, and its reporting system is notoriously flawed and prone to abuse.

Oh, is it Purge O’Clock again?

I’ll be posting links to my presence on other platforms soon.

“But you mustn’t be afraid to ask me anything. If I held something too close… If I held something too close for you to ask about it, I would not bring it up in the first place.”
Louis de Pointe du Lac, Interview with the Vampire

“Read between the lines.”
Lestat de Lioncourt, The Vampire Lestat

I’ve revisited and revised my circa-2000 Interview with the Vampire fic. The first three chapters are up on AO3 now. More to come as I continue to fix up the chapters and post them.

These years have been chronicled already, of course, in the sad little memoir Interview with the Vampire,  spun from the lips of my beloved fledgling Louis de Pointe du Lac. He gave a deeply felt if rather inconsiderate account of how I, cast as the callous villain of his tale, made him a vampire… Yet his story is riddled with mistakes, misunderstandings, and vast omissions. These omissions could only be deliberate, though whether he left things out due to discretion or due to regret, I still don’t know and can’t bear to ask.

But I can no longer look at that crippled little paperback on my shelf without wishing to tell my own version of that time, most particularly the secret history between us that Louis could not bring himself to relate. Even if the tale remains only here, in the cloistered space between my own eyes and the window of my computer screen, it must be told.

Hey do y’all fucks remember two years ago when just before the election all these “don’t vote both parties are bad” or “vote independent!” Posts were going around and then Trump won and now two weeks before midterms there’s all these “don’t bother voting, revolution is the only way!” And “your vote isn’t gonna matter and is an ineffective way to protest” posts are going around? Yeah knock that shit right the fuck off, don’t fall for it and get your ass to the polls, we are not doing this again.

“Remember when people didn’t vote bc they said there was no difference between Hillary and Trump, and now there are child concentration camps(Zack Bornstein)

“I know voting can be a pain in the ass, so just pretend like, if you don’t vote, children will be ripped from the arms of a parent who crawled across a desert to give them a better life and put in cages.” (Laurie Kilmartin)

We now KNOW FOR A FACT that Russian writers were paid to study US politics and make posts on social media to influence the election. We know FOR A FACT this happened ON TUMBLR. There is every reason to believe that’s still happening:

State Dept. Was Granted $120 Million to Fight Russian Meddling. It Has Spent $0

Right now, if you want to continue to have a democracy, the only thing that matters is eliminating Republican majorities, everywhere. That means voting for Democrats. It truly doesn’t matter how you feel about the Democratic party. Right now, your choices are between Republican despots who are taking away citizens’ right to vote in every way they can manage– or Democrats, who still want you to have a say in your government. It’s up to you, this year. By 2020, if Republicans have their way, it may not be up to us anymore.

“One of the simplest ways to make the audience like a character is to show him liking other people. One of the easiest ways to make the audience care about a character is to show him caring about other people. We care about Harry Potter in no small part because he cares so much about his friends. It’s impossible to imagine Harry seeing Hermione get hurt and feeling anything but horror and guilt, no matter how terrible a fight they might have had beforehand. Katniss is by design a more prickly and “difficult” protagonist than Harry is, or than Moss seems intended to be, but we care about her from the start because we see how deeply she loves her sister and her willingness to sacrifice herself to protect her. Bad writers, though, often make the mistake of thinking that you make a character likable by showing that other characters like him, and make the audience care about him by showing that other characters care about him. This tends to have exactly the opposite effect. At a certain point the reader starts to wonder what’s so great about this guy that everyone is showering him with praise, and starts actively wanting to see him fail or be told off.”

Fresh fanfic by myself and @wicked-felina (Rebness)!

Warnings: Gen, no warnings apply.

Words: 3,792

Characters: Nicolas de Lenfent, Louis de Pointe du Lac

Summary: A rainy afternoon at the café is a perfect setting for Louis and Nicolas to argue over philosophy and coffee.

Notes: This chapter is dedicated to the legendary Cesare, one of our all-time fave fanfic writers, who discovered our little AU and has left us wonderful encouraging comments! Among which, that they wanted to see a good dialogue between Louis and Nicki, and we sprung into action to fill the request. We hope that this satisfies like a smooth fancy coffee.

The Signature Blend Vampire Chronicles AU is a delight. Every fandom needs a coffeeshop AU (or many of them!) but I’m not sure how many fandoms are lucky enough to have a coffeeshop AU where the coffee is actually an important factor, and the shop is a huge part of the characterization, and there are breezy romcom elements alongside some of the existential issues of canon.

It’s so fun to see the VC characters skillfully modernized and set in motion. And this bonus chapter gives a lovely compare and contrast of two characters described in the books as “the very twin” of each other in their cynicism, but very different in other ways.

So, I rec this obviously, since I encouraged it and it beautifully fulfills my request.

Also, thanks for the ego boost! Pro tip on becoming legendary: find a fandom that’s been hunted almost to extinction by a lawsuit-happy creator and therefore doesn’t have a ton of fic; write a fairly long id-riddled WIP; leave it hanging unfinished; then wait 18 years. Voila! ^_~

*flails* what a lovely endorsement, I’m speechless. I’ll reply better later, but you’re welcome, we wrote that last chapter for you, and we’re both thrilled with your reaction 😘

… and yes, the How To Become Legendary Pro tip worked perfectly for you, and we expect that chapter you’ve teased (and completion of the fic!! I ain’t too proud to beg)!

It’s okay to have fictional characters do problematic stuff. Really, it is. Fictional characters are there to tell a story; not to be perfect paragons of virtue.

“Yeah!” some people will say. “It’s fine as long as you show that it’s problematic!”

And I’ll say: No. You don’t need to always do that either. We can’t expect writers to point out every moral misstep a character makes.

It’s okay to have characters do something problematic, and it’s okay to assume that the readers can see why it’s problematic on their own.

The number of notes on this that say “No, you have to moralize, because readers are stupid!”  is… disheartening. So what? We have to treat everyone like toddlers just in case someone happens to get the wrong idea about some fiction? If random fanfic (or any other semi-anonymous online content, for that matter) is a major determiner in someone’s life, they already have bigger problems than any fic could affect.

How about this: if someone pays me to write, they’ll get a say in what I write. As long as I’m writing for my own pleasure for free, I will write what I want.

Another suggestion: if you need moral guidance, stop reading fan fiction and turn to victorian children’s literature! Very helpful in encouraging good morals in the young!
