Maven of the Eventide: Vampire Reviews: Interview with the Vampire
And now for something slightly different. If, by any chance, my fandom missed it, then my fandom may find it entertaining and informative. Maven did more of these vampire reviews. And she’s always insightful, eloquent, and very entertaining.
What kind of poetry do the VC vampires like? Vampires like Lestat, Armand, Louis, and Marius. Or any other vampires you want to add. Which poet are they fans of?

I am actually a terrible resource for this question bc I… *gasp* do not really ‘get’ a lot of poetry! I only really like a few poets… like Shel Silverstein (he can be very adult and subversive, btw), Dr. Seuss (who tucked the richness of political/other messages into his works), and other “children’s” authors
yes don’t even think of mocking me on that ok i like what i like, and tbh I headcanon that Lestat has a passion for these, too, since he never got bedtime stories with illustrations as a child (and it’s why he read bedtime stories/poetry to Claudia well beyond the time when she could read to herself bc he loved impressing her with acting out the voices).
- HOWEVER. I do love me some Shakespeare, and I think that counts as poetry, and Lestat loves him some Shakespeare, too. That’s canon. He mentions Keats in TOBT as he’s refurbishing the Rue Royale “Ah, wasn’t it the ode by Keats which had inspired that long-ago purchase? Where had the urn gone?” He also mentions Milton in that book. IDK if he read them but he came into possession of a collection of poetry by Wynken de Wilde in MtD.
- Book-IWTV!Lestat is not wild about books of poetry, ditching Louis one night with a cruel little snap: “Read your damn poems, then! Rot!”
- Lestat also considers music lyrics to “count” as poetry and might get all excited about a new track by Kanye West, Eminem or Macklemore. I think he’d be especially drawn to freestyle rap battles.
- Louis quotes from Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, so I would assume he liked (at least at that time) that kind of story/poetry: macabre, dealing with religion v. nature undertones.
- I see Marius as liking the quirky poetry in the New Yorker, and Stan Rice’s free-form style, as he likes to study emerging trends in thoughts.
- David Talbot likes Blake, the Tyger features in his… trajectory, shall we say.

“The rest of the comic is an interesting look at the French Quarter of New Orleans, but mostly it is a chance for Ennis to parody the Anne Rice style of vampires by contrasting them with his vampire, Cassidy…
The result is some strong parody work (although I thought that the Neil Gaiman jabs were a bit much – I’ll feature them as a Meta-Message very soon) and really, a compelling story about what happens when you, for lack of a better phrase, “buy into your own hype,” as the other vampire gets into the idea of being a vampire far more than he should.

And a probable off-topic here as well but…
The life of the VC vampires became so uninteresting in every book after Queen of the Damned that I became genuinely interested in their lives before they become vampires.
ooc: I feel like for me… it’s just that things have gotten way too easy for the vampires, if that makes sense. TotBT was still ‘Okay WtF is Stat going to do to get himself out of this’. And MtD, while I disliked it at the time, still gives the vampires massive problems. There’s a guy who claims he’s a devil! A ghost of a victim is haunting a vampire! Is there a hell?!?!
Later books, and especially Prince Lestat--and this was one of my two big issues with that book–sort of take away any of their problems. Suddenly they’re all too powerful for anything to be a real threat. And suddenly being a vampire isn’t even seen as bad! Vampires can have kids via vampire science! Maybe they can drink synthetic blood! The sacrifice for immortality isn’t there anymore and neither is the idea that it’s hard or not for everyone. It’s just handed out easily. it’s like they’ve turned from vampires into transcendent angelic beings or something, and it means there are no stakes. Want to be a vampire? Line right up! Why not! Let’s vampire everyone!
Maybe this is not where you were going, but I understand. I think as a fanfic writer or RPer, I like the cracks in canon–how did Daniel go mad? How did he get better? etc. etc. Because it’s fun to fill in the gaps with fic or RP. But I do wish we’d more of those stories in the books, because those are the stories I want. Not a world where vampires are happy-go-lucky creatures where nothing can harm them, I want to see them struggle with murdering people and wrestle with their own demons.
So their lives before they were magically super powerful do become more interesting because they weren’t flawless.
^I very much agree. Vampiring is so easy now. All one needs is a pair of fangs.
I didn’t watch/read Trublood, Vampire Diaries, or Twilight, and so I can’t really declare an opinion on them however much I want to grrrrrrr
…But at least in VC, yes, a lot has been overcome, smoothed over, dealt with, and I think that’s partly what led to the crackiness we see in later canon. It may have been a need to create some kind of conflict again, but bc the earlier books had already resolved the juiciest issues, later canon came across as less dimensional.
Again, I haven’t read/seen most of the more recent vampire media, but from what I have seen, my opinion is – and take this with a grain of salt, if you do love this stuff – these vampires seem declawed. Neutered. Their monstrosity has been watered down. Why? I don’t know. But they’re not interesting to me in that form. I can’t help but think that this has influenced Anne Rice in some way.

The five types of canon.
Canon: What actually happened.
Headcanon: What you think happened, based on the characters, settings, storylines and all reasonable extrapolations thereof.
Heartcanon: What you feel ought to have happened, quite divorced from rationality or sense.
Soulcanon: What you know happened, deep down in your soul, regardless of what anyone says. Including the creators of canon, themselves.
Crotchcanon: What your gonads wish had happened, or, alternatively, what turns you on.
Oh my goodness.
They forgot fanon which seems to be confused these days with canon…
So, what is “fanon” then?
//Fanon is stuff not in canon but that’s so prevalent in fandom that people have largely forgotten it’s not in the source material, ie, Daniel Molloy wearing glasses (which is Movieverse Canon, but literally never happens in the books). It’s headcanons that are extremely common or permeate the fandom so deeply it’s hard to separate them from canon, even if they never actually appear in the main material. (I think.. maybe someone else can explain it better.)
