Those who must be kept

Fun fact: If you google “Those who must be kept”, this is the second picture to come up… and it was done by me… in December 2009. That’s 8 years ago!! And I still kind of like it. A lot.

The clothing is all wrong, of course…

I remember how proud I was about the texts having some meaning… I cheated a lot and just copied existing texts and changed some words in them… and added some “I’ll just write it like usual but with a hierogyph-font”…

It sais something like this:

at their feet

Left:
“Mother of Gods”
“Full Of Magic”
“Ruler Of The Universe”
Akasha

Right:
“Ruler Of Eternity”
“Great God”
“The Perfect One”
“First Son”
Enkil

on the left
See! They are the Beginning. She is the Mother. He is the Father. Those Who Must Be Kept. Protect and enshrine them, the progenitors of all vampires. They are our destiny.

*Beloved Son Marius, for us you give your freedom and your love. We will always remember you.*

They are the Beginning.

***
All those Names are the Names used for Isis and Osiris. (Except the “first son”)

(On a sidenote and before people come at me and accuse me of whitewashing: Read the books: As vampires they had Alabaster skin. On this picture they are supposed to have been vampires for quite some time already. So cut my younger self some slack, ‘kay?)

Oh!! And I think THIS is the first piece of my works that @amadeo-child-of-the-renaissance ever commented on.

This is how we had our very fist contact… in 2010!!

Beautiful! I love these kind of stories!

(I’m sorry you felt you needed to add the side note about POC. This is a hotly debated thing. 1) AR was adhering to the vampire physiology rules she had already set in place in the first few books, that vampire skin becomes lighter with age, and 2) we do not know definitively what color mortal!Akasha’s skin would have been, given that not all Egyptians are necessarily dark skinned. Rami Malek, for example, is a light-skinned Egyptian-American).

When could Enkil have reigned?

Enkil is supposed to be a predynastic King.

So what is the Predynastic Era to begin with?
According to most historians that would be the Neolithic period (a.k.a. New Stone Age!), beginning ca. 6000 BC, with the first human settlements known in the area and ending around 3100 BC, with the first Pharaoh (= Narmer/Menes).

That’s right. Enkil’s reign as a predynastic king could very roughly(!) be placed somewhere in between 6000 BC to 3100 BC.
For reference and amusement:  the creation of writing is roughly to be sat about 5000 years ago (which marks the beginning of history).

Now, we can’t have the Father of all Vampires be Stone Age man, can we?
Let’s try to narrow that time frame down a bit:

I think, since Anne Rice describes some sort of a holding of court, we are pretty safe in ruling the time of the earliest settlements out (little mud brick houses consisting of only one window-less room for a whole family and the earliest form of homo sapiens as subject just don’t make for an epic court to rule over.)

Egyptologists speak of a so called Naqada culture, spanning from ca. 4400 BC to 3000 BC, which can be divided into the following three parts:

  1. Naqada I (4400-3500 BC) -> almost no refined artwork/craftsmanship
  2. Naqada II (3500-3200 BC) -> first metalworking (meteoritical iron)
  3. Naqada III (3200-3000 BC)

We can skip the first two Naqada periods, since there wasn’t really any (known) form of sovereignty comparable to the rule of a king.

Which leads us to Naqada III:
Naqada III is also referred to as Dynasty 0 or the Protodynastic Period.

Here is the issue with chronology within the subject of Egyptology: When the early egyptologists tried to name dynasties there were multiple debates and, like every time when too many big egos are involved, things went wrong. To make things short:
There is now a time called “Zero Dynasty” (which comes before the 1st dyn.), which might be characterized as Predynastic by some and Early Dynastic by others.

There were kings in Naqada III, but they weren’t part of a dynasty yet (hence Protodynastic or Predynastic). Most of them were most likely not related (a dynasty is the succession of kings of the same blood line), but fighting for dominion with each other.
The above mentioned King Narmer (aka Menes) is thought to be the last King of that period and the first Pharaoh of the 1st dynasty (He had been the first known King to unify Egypt).

In conclusion, Enkil’s reign should precede Narmer, but still be set in Naqada III, around 3200-3100 BC.

(We managed to narrow his reign down to 100 years, yay!)

There are, actually, some known Kings from that time that could give us an example for Enkil’s reign, or – which I find very interesting – a possible alias. Stay with me for a bit longer.

9 of them ruled in Lower Egypt, but only one can be placed in Naqada III for sure (forgive me for leaving out the rest):
That King is known as “Double Falcon”, after the depiction of his crest (they didn’t use cartouches by then but crests known as serekh and the historians named them after the depicted animals). Some say he might also have ruled in Upper Egypt.
3 kings are known to have ruled Upper Egypt during Naqada III:
Elephant”, “Bull” and “Scorpion I.”

Bull was probably the predecessor of Scorpion I., whose successor is believed to have been Double Falcon and later a king names Iry-Hor (late 32th dynasty.Iry-Hor is the earliest ruler of Egypt known by name and possibly the earliest historical person known by name).
No one knows for sure where to place Elephant.
All of them are believed to have lived during the early 32th century BC (which allows us to place them near the year 3200 BC to 3150 BC).

Iry-Hor was succeeded by “Ka”/”Sekhen”, who was probably succeeded by “Scorpion II.” or, more probable, by Narmer himself.

Now we have a sorry excuse of a chronology of rulers close to Enkil’s mortal years, ending with Narmer:

  • Bull
  • Scorpion I.
  • Double Falcon
  • Iry-Hor
  • Ka (Sekhen)
  • Scorpion II. or Narmer (Menes)

As you can see, there is a line of succession, albeit not one you should bet on, since egyptologists are still not 100% sure about the line of succession.
BUT: Where to place Elephant?

Elephant (maybe read as Pen-abw) is the provisional name of a predynastic ruler. But since the incarved rock inscriptions and ivory tags showing his name are either drawn sloppily, or lacking any royal crest, the reading and thus whole existence of king “Elephant” are highly disputed.

Egyptian Kings had many different names:

  • Horus name
  • Nebty-name
  • Golden Horus name
  • Throne name
  • their personal name

Here is a headcanon for you:

Enkil was the Pharaoh, whose throne-name was Pen-abu (“Great one from the (throne) seat”) how fitting.
Historians how call him “Elephant” and he was the predecessor of “Bull”, one of the earliest rulers of Naqada III period, in the early 32. dynasty.

Is it just me or do I get the feeling that people often forget that Akasha is canonly from Uruk, she’s Sumerian… Enkil on the other hand who people rarely even give a mention to is a pre-dynastic Kemetian. Akasha merely moved and adopted Kemet as her own when she made union with him. Both are undeniably PoC, and this is all up to reader interpretation, but Akasha in a historical sense is more likely to be Asiatic/Middle Eastern.

Thanks for sharing this background info, anon! Very informative.

I have another suggestion for a possible VC casting, which would be Rami Malek as Enkil. I think he has the right face for it, and he already played the role of an Egyptian ruler in Night At The Museum. (And he was a vampire in the movie Breaking Dawn, but let’s forget those catastrophic Twilight movies.)

One of my fave topics is VC casting 😀 and Enkil doesn’t get enough love. So naturally I wrote an unnecessarily long-ass answer.

(^Rami Malek from NatM bc I couldn’t look at pics of him from Twilight, that vampire makeup was just too weird for me and that’s saying a lot bc I love the gross vampire makeup from 30 Days of Night.)

Rami is ethnically perfect and very cute and Enkil was supposedly pretty young when he started his rule:“But he was young and strong and determined to rule his land.” Maharet talking about Enkil, QOTD

And he looks like someone a giant bitch in a tiny package Strong Woman like Akasha could push around without much resistance. I vaguely remember liking Rami in NatM, all those characters were somewhat cartoonish and I always enjoy that. I’ve only seen bits of the Twilight movies but not enough to poison myself, and not enough to remember him from them 😛

But if you really want MY opinion, he’s not my first choice for Enkil.

We first really meet Enkil in TVL when Lestat meets him for a cordial discussion Enkil nearly crushes Lestat’s skull in defense of his Queenie. Even before that moment, Lestat is freaking the hell out over TWMBK. Not many characters are capable of scaring the (figurative) shit out of Lestat, and Enkil is one of them. So he needs to be able to look intimidating before he can speak or even move. Granted, some of Lestat’s flipping-out was more about the fact that they might be paralyzed inside their bodies (if you haven’t seen @remarried’s fanart of that moment you really must), but still. The near skull-crushing certainly gave him someone to be scared of in Enkil. Normally I defend all actor’s abilities over their physical characteristics, but in this case, he starts out as a statue, and needs to look intimidating without the help of fancy moves and lines.

So I imagine him looking more masculine, a hint of grimness (he orders some pretty cruel stuff if you remember!) and some mystery in his face, and I happened to see Ranveer Singh on my dash just today… and yes. Yes yes. Yisss.

image

Difficulty: Finding pics of Ranveer NOT smiling. I don’t know his acting, whether he does Serious at all, but physically, Ranveer matches my headcanon better than Rami. Rami might be a good Khayman, though.

I’m also not of the Social Justice Warrior contingency that demands ethnic conformance of the actor to the character. I am not politically correct *shrugs*

And Enkil does love Akasha, and I would want some snuggles like this:

How would you have felt if you had a child with akasha?

eternalpharaoh:

Proud. I would have been proud, and I would have seen to it that there were more to follow. As desperately as she tried for an heir in our living years, as much as it wounded her heart and my pride to have nothing come of our efforts, I would have been relieved and overjoyed. Even if that child lived a mortal’s years and knew Anubis…were they alive and against me, I would still be proud.
