This is a good question and it took me awhile to figure out the difference (and I might be wrong, so other ppl can reblog w/ their own explanation).
The confusion is bc “Verse” is an abbreviation for “universe,” and “AU” is an abbreviation for “Alternate Universe.” The difference is mainly in that the former is usually applied to RP and the latter is usually applied to fanfic and fanart, but both words can be used for both.
A “Verse” (lots of different words for this, different RPers make them up) is more for RPers, bc it’s a time period set in canon, or a non-canon time period chosen between the RPers who are roleplaying together.
– So you can have a Louis RPer and a Lestat RPer referring to “Verse:One Happy Family” (or whatever name they choose for it), which refers to the time period in canon in which those muses were living with Claudia and all three of them were happy, before Claudia started to actually grow up.
– Or, you can have a Verse that is NOT in canon, like “Verse:Italian Tales” (or whatever name they choose for it) in which a Gabrielle RPer and an OC RPer are roleplaying stories from Gabrielle’s childhood in Italy, which was not explicitly written about in canon.
An "Alternate Universe” is more typically used in fanfic or fanart in which the characters and canon have been rearranged somehow, like a female!Lestat, or the idea like: Enkil awoke in 1984 and he is mindlessly on the warpath, terrorizing the world, and Akasha is trying to enlist the other vampires to help stop him. My fave AUs are ones in which lots of canon, fanon, or headcanon is part of the story.
– There is an incomplete fanfic on AO3 called The Grim Brothers that basically casts the VC characters into a Grim’s fairy tale, and they are not vampires in it, but some things from canon are retained or reworked: Louis and David are stepbrothers, which is technically sort of true!

// Where do I even begin? Let’s start like this. I played Nicolas on another platform and some kind soul linked me to a drabble on tumblr, written by @a-misunderstanding-my-love, because it reminded them of my Nicolas. I agreed and proceeded to quite literally read through the entire journal.
Through that process I found out that this amazing Nicolas writer also played Gabrielle – be still my heart – and then of course a perfect iteration of the one and only Brat Prince. I also discovered some of the other great writers that way and I finally decided that, yeah, this might make it worth giving tumblr RP a try. So I messaged her and asked if she’d be interested in playing with me and she was even so kind as to help me get started by explaining what to do and showing me the ropes a little.
Then the fun really started. But yes, what to say about her? I don’t know her that long yet, but already it feels weird if we don’t at least talk for a bit every day. She’s helped make me feel welcome from the time on when I was just someone who was a great fan of her writing and desperate to interact and now we get to have fun in various threads and just by talking to each other.
That she’s a talented writer is an understatement. Obviously her writing was enough to make me want to brave tumblr, so that should speak for itself. She always manages to make me laugh or want to cry or even make me angry – at her character for the flaws she portrays so well – often all of that within just a few lines. She knows so much about canon and fandom, she’s witty and sarcastic and sweet, fascinating and experienced and always a joy to talk to. I admire her deeply and I’m pleased to no end that I actually get to write with her.
A cranky bitch, a seductive queen and a great friend, all in one person. ❤

// AR shared this article on FB last night, and I, for one, am fucking terrified.
I’m not leaving…
Wow, *huge sigh of relief.*
TL;DR: I read it. It’s an essay from some random person, Carmen Dominique Taxer, about how RPers of fictional characters, specifically Lestat, are somehow divorcing readers from their headcanons of the fictional characters due to the way the RPers choose to portray these characters. That Taxer herself feels she had some kind of intimate connection with Lestat that RPer’s are somehow responsible for dissolving.
[As an aside: I thought that the article was going to be an interview with AR re: the next VC and she was saying smtg like, “~Welp guys I revived him, spruced him all up, and crowned him *~KING~* and now I’m ready to //SLAUGHTER// HIM IN THE NEXT BOOK HOW D’YA LIKE THEM APPLES?? xoxo AR~" which is absolutely not what the article was about which was a huge relief]
The scary part is not the accusation of the author of the essay. The scary part could be that AR shared it on her page. But she presented it without her own opinion. In the past, presenting topics without her own opinion was an open invitation to her POTP army to descend upon whoever/whatever the topic was and crush them/it out of existence.
That doesn’t seem to be her intention here. I didn’t see her response(s), if there were any, to the feedback she got on it. She might really just be curious about how her readers might agree or disagree with Ms. Taxer.
A quick skim showed that RPers defended themselves very eloquently and respectfully. I pasted one such response below:
Hit the jump for more on this, but basically, dudes, RPers, fanfic writers, I do not sense any disturbance in our corner of the Force. Continue business as usual.
And really, I think it’s wonderful that we have Lestats to flirt and interact with, Louis’s ("Louisi”?) to tease about fire, Armands to push around, Daniels to pester, characters like Claudia and Nicolas revived from their canon deaths, etc. etc., basically, #LOVE TO ALL THE RPERS!
Kristy Ashton: “Read through it a little bit and it was a nicely written piece I felt it gave role players a very bad name.
I have been a role player going on 20 years in a large variety of platforms and not all of us ‘steal’ canon characters for our own. My characters have always and will always be original and so have my storylines because I don’t like ‘rules’ laid down for restricted storylines.
But what upset me was the reference to role players as hollow creatures. It reminds me to much how fan fic writers are seen as having no creativity. I wrote fan fiction as a teenager and I saw it as creative exercise, just like role play.
I am a writer now, creating all my own original material and characters, and not once have I ever felt bad for any of this. This article felt like shaming to me and kinda ticked me off in that way.”
I added my emphasis in bold. Taxer responded to Ashton that she herself is a role-player! She says that “the role-players I refer to specifically are not the same as the traditional rp’ers. I have a lot of respect for someone that can take on the nature of a character, but, I have met some… less than honest ones online. I woud like to clarify now, that, the manipulations referred to in this article are not every role-player I have ever met, though, far too many, so much so, that, it has caused me to lose my own passion for roleplaying. Something that saddens me greatly…
I abhor the resentment passed on role-players, and that includes the resentment I may have perpetuated here, which is why I have placed a disclaimer into the original article now.”
So she basically withdraws some of the resentment after some more rational conversation about it.
