This moment kills me. And I guess I never realized how differently it was handled in the movie.

Wow, yes. It’s been years since I read the graphic novel and I’d forgotten that there, it’s Claudia comforting Madeleine…

Interview With The Vampire tattoo sleeve by this amazing artist

For cosplay reasons, I need to know who has red hair and looks the youngest in The Vampire Chronicles. (I’m a girl, and I really would like to cosplay as someone. I’m on Queen Of The Darned. And if there is someone, please describe them for me.) Thank you!

We have *~several~* redheaded characters to choose from, anon! Age is relative tho, there’s youngest in actual years, then there’s youngest in appearance.

****Opening my overcoat to reveal the gingers****

The Vampire Armand

He’s probs your best bet, being the youngest in appearance, he was turned into a vampire when he was 17. He’s one of the main characters and pretty easily recognizable even to ppl outside VC fandom. He’s over 400 yrs old now. Other characters often compare him to the youths in Botticelli’s paintings; so pretty, he mentions that he’s mistaken for being a girl at least once in his mortal life.

image

[^Portrait of a Young Man 3., Botticelli, and I think the expression is very Armand, he’s pretty much the sassy teen of the series but as grumpy as an old man]

I would never be anything but the seventeen-year-old boy you see now… [but] I am not a waif and never have been. I am a strong child. – Armand, The Vampire Armand

image

^X @amadeo-child-of-the-renaissance found this, another Botticelli angel Armand, with a face that’s more canon-compliant IMO 😉 AR bases Armand off these Botticelli angels and they have varying straight and curly hair, usually wavy at least.

Armand’s hair is described as curly when he was mortal and when he was a fledgling, so I think that’s the natural state of it.

Armand can be dapper or grungey depending on his mood, so the crucial aspect is really his hair, and if you want extra credit, you may want to carry a blender around, that’s sort of the fandom joke about him and Daniel going nuts over blending stuff in QOTD.

Here’s some Armand cosplayers (they’re mixed into that link) you might wanna check out 😉

Other redheads in the series… bc I don’t wanna hide the rare VC ladies under a cut! NO CUTS WE LONG POST LIKE MEN

Jesse Reeve

image

^I’m not wild about her portrayal in the QOTD movie but anyways… she’s a little over 30 when she’s turned, and it was 1985, so she is technically younger in age than Armand. He will always look younger than her, tho.

Cosplaying Jesse Reeve would involve smtg about her being a Talamascan, maybe, or carrying Claudia’s diary? She finds it in QOTD.

Maharet and Mekare

^The redhaired twins. You might go to @redhairedtwin, a Maharet RPer, for descriptions of the twins.

image

^X Maharet (left) and kid!Jesse (right) in the QOTD movie. I headcanon Maharet and Mekare as being younger in appearance than we see Maharet in the movie, but idk right now how old they were when they were turned (I don’t have my books to check either). Early 20′s, early adulthood, I think. Maharet and Mekare are technically the oldest on this list but they might look the same age or younger than Jesse.

Cosplaying one of the twins means a bloody mouth or bloody eyes.

Madeleine

image

^poor Madeleine in the the IWTV movie barely had any screentime, she got a little more in the book, but she’s rarely mentioned in later canon. Louis’ first fledgling, made to take care of Claudia so he can go bang Armand move on with his afterlife. She’s a more obscure character, but she’s A REDHEAD SO SHE COUNTS!

If you want to cosplay her, carrying a doll that looks like Claudia, or wearing a locket with a portrait of a Claudia look-alike, that’d be a good accessory 😉

I think that’s all the relevant redheads in VC, but if anyone can think of more, feel free to reblog and add!

~~Hey all~~

Most of you have confirmed your assignments (yaaaasss) but there are a few who haven’t, and you know who you are, we’ll put you in the sun for your crime!

J/K, it’s fine. Please confirm your assignment to us via ask or chat if you haven’t already done so.

Aaaaaand if anyone feels they can’t complete their assignment for any reason, please let us know so that we can reassign your gift to another Giver/Santa.

I saw your post about how long Madeleine lived in the book and do you know if she shared a coffin with Louis and Claudia or did they have separate coffins during that 1 week of her living as a vampire?

The night she’s turned, Louis tries to get Madeleine to share a coffin with him (not out of love it seems, but just that the sun is rising and he doesn’t want her to wreck herself), but we don’t know if he’s successful with that, the scene ends without it being confirmed.

image

After that, I don’t think Louis mentions the sleeping arrangements, but doubt Madeleine would sleep alone at that point. So either with Claudia or Louis, but I headcanon that the night of Madeleine’s turning was the end of Louis sharing his coffin with Claudia ;A;

@queenofthesavagegarden used to RP as Madeleine (@nonparisiennearchive), so maybe she would have some insight on this, but anyone else is welcome to answer.

I know Madeleine was killed off pretty quickly in the movie but in the book didn’t she live longer? Just curious.

Yeah, she did live a little longer in the book ;A;

image

EDIT: Madeleine vampired for 1 week only! (Thanks @queenofthesavagegarden) It was long enough that she went back to destroy her old doll shop, no longer needing the replicas of her lost daughter bc she had Claudia! And she also spent time making Claudia-sized furnishings so that Claudia could feel, at least in her own home, that she was the “right size.” ;A;

Different kind of anguish in the movie, being that it’s the SAME NIGHT Madeleine was turned, if she had just listened to Louis, she wouldn’t be dying that morning. In the book, having had that time with Claudia, it’s awful that they had to die so soon because that time was still so brief.

So a thought just crossed my mine. Why did Armand choose to also kill Madeleine when Louis clearly turned her into a vampire so Claudia could leave with her and so Louis could be with Armand? Doesn’t really make any sense, doesn’t it? If Armand didn’t kill Madeleine he would have gotten what he wanted which was Louis, right? So what was the point of killing Madeleine?

Poor Madeleine! Did not deserve to die like that ;A; Unfortunately, I’d say she was condemned to die by proxy, being so attached to Claudia.

image

I don’t think Madeleine’s death was totally under Armand’s control. He was not really the leader of the TdV (see more quotes on that below the cut); in TVA Armand says: “For the record, [Claudia] was slain by my Coven of mad demon actors and actresses,… it became all too clear to too many that she had tried to murder her principal Maker, The Vampire Lestat. It was a crime punishable by death, the murdering of one’s creator or the attempt at it”

^“slain by my Coven” but not that he ordered them to do it. Just that he didn’t stop it from happening.

This is an #unreliable narrator situation again, as there are at least three different accounts of the trial that was held under TdV (see more below the cut)(four if you include the above statement from TVA). In all instances, the important part of the “trial” was that Claudia was the one who had to be convicted and sentenced to death. Louis and Madeleine were secondary concerns.

There was no explanation for why Madeleine was also condemned to death, I would suggest that Santiago (and/or Armand) wanted to kill Madeleine bc she was mad (the extent of which we don’t really know) and/or they didn’t really know what else to do with her. Santiago probably wanted to do it bc it’s thrilling to kill another vampire, as Armand pointed out in book!IWTV: `You see,’ he said, `killing other vampires is very exciting; that is why it is forbidden under penalty of death.’

  1. Movie!IWTV – Armand is not part of the “trial,” we see him close the door against the whole scene, and he waits until later to free Louis from his (upside-down!!! SO MEAN) imprisonment in the walled-in coffin o’ doom. So one would guess that Armand at least negotiated w/ Santiago to have Louis’ life to be spared in this way.
  2. Book!IWTV – Armand was not present at the “trial.” Santiago seemed to be the one running that show.

Again, one would guess that Armand at least negotiated w/ Santiago beforehand.

  3. TVL – Armand was present at the “trial” and seemed to be the one running that show, and Madeleine is not even mentioned.

In movie!IWTV, we see Armand closing the door on the screams of the condemned, and the explanation as to why he didn’t come out to help when Louis called for him? He had told Louis that he wasn’t really the leader of this coven, “But if there were a leader, I would be that one.”

In book!IWTV, similarly:

“ `Are you the leader of this group?’ [Louis] asked him.
” `Not in the way you mean leader,’ [Armand] answered. But if there were a leader here, I would be that one.’

Armand knows that to exert power, you have to defend it:

[Louis says:] “ `Stop them if you will, advise them that we don’t mean any harm.
Why can’t you do this? You say yourself we’re not your enemies, no
matter what we’ve done… ’
” I could hear him sigh, faintly. [Armand says:] `I have stopped them for the time
being,’ he said. `But I don’t want such power over them as would be
necessary to stop them entirely. Because if I exercise such power, then
I must protect it.
I will make enemies. And I would have forever to
deal with my enemies when all I want here as a certain space, a certain
peace. Or not to be here at all. I accept the scepter of sorts they’ve
given me, but not to rule over them, only to keep them at a distance.‘
