The Vampire Chronicles List : Prince Lestat – #8

“And how could I ever explain how I had reached this moment, I who had been Born to Darkness of rape, and sought for redemption in a borrowed mortal body, and followed spirits yet unexplained to realms of inexplicable Heaven and nightmarish Hell, only to fall back again to the brutal Earth, broken, and battered, and defeated? How to explain why this, this alone, was the bold and terrifying alliance that would give me the passion to travel the road of the centuries, of the millennia, of the aeons of uncharted and unimagined time?”

Warning; I’m about to wax at length about a
Daniel thing in Prince Lestat.
I’m probably “interrogating the text from the wrong perspective”, but so be it!
😀

So I’m poking my way through Prince Lestat again, because I
cannot resist squeezing every last bit of interesting detail out of any of the
Chronicles that has to do with Daniel, and I couldn’t resist taking a good long
look at this particular bit because I was also made to suffer four years of
seminary during my late teens, so any chance to use that knowledge for
something I actually enjoy is occasionally entertaining for this heathen.

The line from Prince Lestat I’ve been
pondering the last day or so:

Prince Lestat: He
and Daniel had to leave Brazil. This was a safe place no longer. Daniel said he
understood. “Whither thou goest, I go,”
he had said.

This is, of course, a partial quote from The
Old Testament which is full is:

Ruth 1:16: And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to
return from following after thee: for whither
thou goest, I will go
; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people
shall be my people, and thy God my God

With the last name Molloy,
it’s obvious that Daniel is of Irish descent, and so it seems to have become a
fairly consistent fan belief over the years (based on the fic and discussions
out there) that Daniel was likely raised in a Catholic environment. Personally,
this quote just cemented that fan-canon thought for me even more, and with that
in mind, it really added a new layer of depth to what Daniel is saying here.

I know it’s also been
speculated post Blood And Gold
that Daniel is in a situation he has little or no control over, being left or
taken into Marius’ care. That somehow he’s become a ‘lackey’ or he’d become a low-level
replacement for Those Who Must Be Kept. I know because I was a party of that
fan-camp of thought for quite some time. So believe me, this is a really big 180° for me to be taking.

It’s become clear in Prince Lestat that Daniel has
come back to his senses, but this particular line seems to also establish that
Daniel has remained and continues to remain with Marius of his own volition. His reference of The Book of Ruth is a pretty
subtle but clear indication that he’s accepted his companion and wants to
remain at his side. Wherever Marius goes, he’s going, and where Marius chooses
to live, that’s where Daniel will live.

It also adds an additional
potential layer of Daniel’s mindset toward Armand. In the Bible, Ruth
chooses to stay with her mother-in-law, Naomi, instead of going home to her
family, hence the famous quote. I can’t help but wonder if Daniel’s also subtly
referencing that even though Armand isn’t dead in the literalist of senses,
their relationship is. That of course also begs the question if he then thinks of Marius in a ‘familiar, paternal kind of way’ but I’m not going there right now. That’ll be for another time.

I am flailing so hard right now because I’ve wondered about that line and I love you to death for drawing this out and pointing out its implications in the context of Daniel-as-Catholic, and the relevance of the passage to Daniel’s situation.

Personally I got the feeling that Marius was doing some recovery of his own, and that possibly Daniel is staying with him for the time being because he’s needed, and Marius has done a lot for him. That’s not to say that I disagree entirely about his thinking re:Armand, I do think their reunion in PL is probably the first since Daniel ‘went mad’. So he wouldn’t have any particular reason to think they could pick their relationship back up, but he still seems pretty eager to go to Trinity and see everyone – and if going to Trinity meant ‘seeing the ex’ I think we could expect slightly more mixed feelings on Dan’s part? So while I do think he’s definitely staying with Marius by his own choice at this point, I guess I’m not sure about the finality of it. (But this post is really awesome and I love it.)

Yeah, I like the idea that the relationship (whether it’s just paternal or romantic) between Marius and Daniel has been therapeutic on both sides. I think that because neither made the other there’s a lack of pressure, and they were living together at what was clearly a very difficult time for both of them.

We get very little from Daniel’s POV in BaG but I suspect that for every one of Daniel’s worst moments as described by Marius, Daniel has also watched Marius spend an entire night just staring at the wall, or constantly putting an order for paint in an Amazon basket and then deleting it, putting it in and deleting it…

Hey lady!

I haven’t seen any fanfic that includes the events from PL or acknowledges the events from the book, but go check out nodominion (Rose RPer), and antoineandthepiano (Antoine RPer), they both consider PL to be canon (they may have seen the fic u seek, too) 😉

Has anyone else seen fanfic that fits what duendology‘s lookin’ for? Please share w/ the whole class ^______^

//Thanks to the vcsecretgifts Secret Rose Exchange, I now know that June’s birth flower is the Rose. I previously had Rose’s birthday in early July, but now I’ve moved it to late June.

Now I have the headcanon that her mother didn’t really have another name for her, didn’t really think of one while she was pregnant, and the nurse suggested it in the hospital, telling her of the significance to June. Morningstar thought it was pretty enough, the baby plump with rosy cheeks. Rose, though she hates the comparisons people make with her to the flower, is just happy she wasn’t born in July. Otherwise her name might have been Larkspur.

I kissed him. I pressed my lips to his and I held this kiss for a long silent moment. And then I gave in to a silent wave of feeling, and I took him in my arms. I held him tight against me. I felt his unmistakable silken skin, his soft shining black hair. I heard the blood throbbing in him, and time dissolved, and it seemed I was in some old and secret place, some warm tropical grotto we’d once shared, ours alone in some way, with the scent of sweet olive blossoms and the whisper of moist breeze. “I love you,” I whispered.
In a low intimate voice, he answered: “My heart is yours.”

I wanted to weep.
But there was no time.

//Sooo on my very stressful and not fun at all vacation I re-read Interview and TVL. I started QotD as well, but only got as far as Jesse’s introduction. Out of the series so far QotD remains my favorite. It’s masterfully put together, with each chapter/section the perfect length, all the while building proper suspense. It does perfectly what PL failed at, which is what disappoints me more about PL than any plot point.

As I read I highlighted passages [*pets my Kindle*] I found interesting/enlightening, especially since I’ve read all the VC books now and have 20/20 hindsight. Putting this under a read-more to save your dash.

I tend to blame Anne for the internalised misogyny (and she has copped to it herself), but I also find it canonically explicable (because I always have this urge to explain annoying canon things rather than disregard them) – I can see Marius (coming from the culture that he does, and having had only brothers, and being very insightful in some ways but really fucking stupid in others) being the kind of clueless misogynist who tells the women he loves that they’re “not like the other girls” and doesn’t grasp how insulting that is.

And god, I would kill for first-person POV books or even fucking sections for Gabrielle and Bianca. She’s at least shown she can still write Gabrielle, and Bianca was one of many characters brought back in PL, but with very little done with her. I’m not holding my breath for it to happen (’least expectations, least disappointment’ seems a good rule of thumb), but it’s a massive hole in the series, to my mind.

Interview With the Vampire

“Hell is hatred, people living together in eternal hatred. We’re not in hell.” – Claudia

I love No Exit by Sartre, and this line reminds me so much of it. Just a line I adore, with so much truth.

“I was vaguely horrified at the thought of having an accent to my French, but this wasn’t my immediate concern.” – Louis

*pets Louis* That is all.

“ ‘Ah, but to cover up such curls,’ said Celeste, now playing with Claudia’s golden hair. And I realized what must have been obvious: that all of them had dyed their hair black, but for Armand…” – Louis

Hair dying Vampires is possible! We have canon proof. Look forward to Rose having oddly dyed ombre hair or something weird like pastel purple or pink.

“ ‘I want to burn the doll shop!’” – Madeleine

Obviously Louis’ fledgling.

“What would Christ need have done to make me follow Him like Matthew or Peter? Dress well, to begin with. And have a luxurious head of pampered yellow hair.” -Louis

Louis love for Lestat makes me want to cry.

The Vampire Lestat

“I felt inexpressible love for these men and women. They explained to me how each actor had his role for life, and how they did not use memorized words, but improvised everything on stage. You knew your name, your character, and you understood him and made him speak and act as you thought he should. That was the genius of it.” – Lestat

This reminds me so much of RPing. Rose and Seth are my main canon chars, but they’re my first in 13 years of RPing. I’m far more accustomed to OCs. No matter what you RP, this captures the essence of it to me.

“I’ll never know. I’ll never know what it is like to be human in any way, shape, or form again.” – Lestat

Oh, how young and naive you were Lestat.

“She didn’t even look disheveled so much as she looked impossible, a woman torn out of time and place, clad only in slippers and dress, no chains on her, free to soar.” – Lestat about Gabrielle

I wish we had more canon first-person VC chars. This quote makes me want a book written by Gabrielle, or Bianca, or ANY OF THEM. Yes, we have snippets in the anthology books, and Pandora, but Merrick was really David’s tale.

“ ‘You know the creatures of the night are ripe for a great leader,’ she said. ‘Not some superstitious mumbler of old rites, but a great dark monarch who will galvanize us according to new principles.’” – Gabrielle

I don’t think when Gabrielle said this, she had any inkling this leader would become her son.

“ ‘The truth is most women are weak, be they mortal or immortal. But when they are strong, they are absolutely unpredictable.’” – Marius

Do I blame this misogyny on Marius or on Anne?

It felt great to re-read these books. I’ve probably read IWTV 7 times and each time I discover new things. I’ve only read TVL once before. QotD I’ve read a few times, though now that I’m home I’ll probably go through it a little slower.

On an pure OOC note, my vaca was terrible except for how tan I am now. My arms and legs are 5 shades darker than they were, though I’m all sore from sunburn. Ah well, I brought it upon myself.

Thanks for sticking through this too long post!
