just watched only lovers left alive… normally i don’t like movies with no visible plot, but this movie was absolutely astounding

YES, I loooooved OLLA! Definitely one of my faves.

So many questions about those characters! I want the backstory on all of them. How are they turned? When was Eve turned? She seems to have some kind of touch-telepathy with materials, like a druid? How did Ava get turned, is she older than Adam? WHAT HAPPENED IN PARIS 87 YRS AGO?  Some bad shit went down in Paris for our faves, too.

(From what I understand, based on my behind-the-scenes knowledge (I know a dude who is good friends with the director, Jim Jarmusch) much of what does happen in OLLA is based on real things that happened in the director’s life, specifically, experiences with an ex (in the movie, represented by Ava).)

It’s almost the VC movie we’ve deserved for a long time and I loved it! Like a documentary or a diary entry, almost. It’s humorous, sensuous, clever, dramatic, all built on a strong foundation of the characters’ chemistry w/ each other. It offers its own take on some of the vampire mythology (they don’t have reflections in mirrors, they are susceptible to blood diseases). Not alot actually HAPPENS, plot-wise, but it doesn’t need to. We’re getting a slice of life of these characters. It’s mostly a collection of charming subtle moments, like Adam trying Eve’s new “cuisine” for the first time:

image

^Yes, this moment has a sexiness to it *drool* but more than that, he is almost childlike in both his resistance to *~and his curiosity about~* this New Thing bc he won’t let Eve know she can improve his mood so easily bc Adam is a SERYUS Brooding Musician ffs.

Btw, there is/was an Adam RPer, @wastefulselfobsession. You might check out their archive for more OLLA. They have character backstories!

So Adam is something of a Louis/Nicolas hybrid, being the bookworm musician who lives in a shambles and doesn’t care for fashion (or conditioner apparently). Like Louis, he doesn’t want to go around hunting the Evildoer. I can’t help but make a few more little comparisons to IWTV…

^Frickin’ house rules, ppl!!! Hot dad is angry.

^Claudia and Ava are SOOO sorry. Like really. So apologetic. They’ll never do it again, seriously. They are voracious little monsters, aren’t they?

^Little sisters to big bro/sis/makers: “We are going to have S O  M U C H fun”

More comparisons could be made but I like ppl to think I am just a casual fan and not a corkboard maniac that’s alls I got for now.

[send me a tv show/book/fandom and i’ll say the top 5 things i’d change about it] OLLA (it’s a movie but still)! Bwahahaaa… this should be challenging.

annabellioncourt:

oops, I forgot to list movie, that was part of it.

1. Those wigs gotta go. They….kind of….worked for Eve, making her look like an antique doll with dusty, tangled hair; but looked like a dead animal on Adam, 10/10 horrible mess.

2. the zombie references were annoying, it seemed like such a juvenile thing for a 200 year old vampire to say, especially one that supposed to be so intellectual.

3. Ian didn’t have to melt away in the water/acid, the CGI for it wasn’t that great, and it was a bit of gore that was mostly absent from the rest of the film, and it interrupted the flow of an otherwise very consistent style.

4. I liked that vampires could be killed by drinking diseased blood, but it didn’t have to be played out, it could have just been mentioned/referenced.

5. Tom Hiddleston has the least beleivable vampire smile I’ve ever seen (I have seen a lot) and it ruined an otherwise great closing shot.  I understand that we’ve been prying into their private lives the entire film, and having them come towards the camera like that at the end was almost like saying “we can only learn so much and live,” putting us in the place of their victims: we’ve witnessed it, we can’t be allowed to share this. But…ugh…maybe no fangs? Maybe less snarl? I have no idea how to fix that, but I cringe every time I see it. Tilda’s as awesome though, she makes an exceptionally convincing vampire.

bonus: Adam plays the entire No. 5 instead of just a minute of it becuase that solo….daaaaaaaamn. Also pls fuck the whole MARLOWE IS SHAKESPEARE bullshit with a chainsaw. I love this film enough that I can ignore it, but why. Why.

Send me a book/movie/tv show and I’ll tell you five thing’s I’d change/

#Perfect just perfect! For you, @annabellioncourt since u loved it so much lol…

Hey what do you think of the movies Byzantium and only lovers left alive they are two of my favorite movies

Those movies came out within a year of eachother (Byzantium in 2012 and OLLA in 2013) so it makes sense to like them both, they both had good cinematography and they both aimed to make their own mark on the vampiring mythology and physiology.

I didn’t like Byzantium, sadly, and I’d rather not dwell on the reasons why since it’s one of your fave movies.

OLLA, on the other hand, is almost the VC movie we’ve deserved for a long time and I loved it! Definitely one of my faves, too. It’s humorous, sensuous, clever, dramatic, all built on a strong foundation of the characters’ chemistry w/ each other. Not alot actually HAPPENS, plot-wise, but it doesn’t need to. Then of course there are the obvious comparisons to IWTV (and IDK if these were intentional or not but the dynamic works as well here as it does in IWTV), which makes it a little bit of a VC AU:

^Some bad shit went down in Paris for our faves, too.

I’m not sure if you’ve talked about Only Lovers Left Alive, but how well do you think Lestat would get along with the characters from that movie. I feel like he’d have a soft spot for Adam (a musician) and Eve (an intellectual), but would maybe have mixed feelings for Ava who is a little reckless.

I looooooved Only Lovers Left Alive! So many similarities to VC, I could write a thesis on it, but those characters were also beautiful in their own story. So many questions about them! I want the backstory on all of them. WHAT HAPPENED IN PARIS 87 YRS AGO?

image

^Bad things happen in Paris in VC, too ;A;

But look at these cuties awwww…  the OLLA vampires’ personalities are totally compatible w/ VC, they seem to be characters first and the vampiring is secondary.

image

The OLLA vampires have different physiological rules from the Ricean vampires, and those rules dictated how they live. For one thing, Adam and Eve have arrangements w/ mortal agents to get clean blood rather than risk taking victims, whose blood could be tainted w/ modern disease or drugs, which OLLA vampires are vulnerable to. So no funtimes hunting evildoers like Lestat :[ They also don’t seem to need to drink as much blood as Ricean vampires do except for Ava bc she’s Claudia.

image

OLLA vampires can also stay awake during the day if they want to but are still highly flammable to sunlight, so they can probably pass as mortal somewhat better than Ricean vampires do. Eve has a sensory gift in which she can “read” the history from touching an object!

You asked about Lestat specifically, but Louis and Adam would totally bond over poetry and literature. Lestat and Eve (and/or Ava!) would go out to dive bars and rock out. Ava’s similarity to Claudia would make her an ideal hunting buddy for Lestat, but her recklessness would definitely irk him when he realizes he can’t reign her in. Ava seems as insatiable as Claudia, and even MORE selfish.

As @hyperbeeb put it so well [X]:

I’ve fully just accepted that [the OLLA vampires are] a part of the VC universe but have managed to stay out of the way of the wacky bullshit that affects the rest of the VC characters (probably due to the powers bestowed on Tilda Swinton from being an alien goddess). But maybe one day they run across Louis and Lestat and become so incredibly grateful that they don’t spend time around these other vampires (even if Lestat and Adam talked about music for like 8 hours and Lestat told Louis for days afterwards that Adam was like him except better… but less pretty don’t be offended Louis)

Hit the jump for moar pics and thoughts…

Some more comparisons bc of reasons:

image

^Never in the house you naughty girls!

image

^Little sisters to big bro/sis: “We are going to have S O  M U C H fun”

image

^Adam would appeal to Lestat in his similarity to Nicolas, w/ the tortured musician thing and similarity to Louis with his fascinations with things (and he’s a slim brunet w/ a lot of soul like BOTH of them). Adam seems even less interested than Louis in fashion and material possessions, and his home is as disorganized as I would imagine Louis’ would be (Adam has nests of use, w/ items roughly clustered by category). I would hope that Louis takes better care of his stuff, tho. Adam and Louis both considered suicide a very real option but couldn’t do it themselves; fortunately, their loved ones dragged them back from the edge. Nicolas allegedly did suicide in canon, but there is fanon that he’s still undead, kicking around in secret.

image

Eve was definitely like Lestat in her confidence, curiosity for even the smallest things. Fearless, outgoing, very fashionable. Blood popsicles! She also has some positive Marius qualities to her, in that she had been turned a VERY long time ago, and is largely at peace with the way the world changes around her. Lestat would be intrigued by her tactile gift, too.

image

Ava is very Claudia, aged up, more optimistic, her default mood is generally pretty happy, even though it seems like she’s a pro at being kicked out of groups. Her mood can shift quickly, she’s selfish, flashy, silly, impulsive. She might have been turned anywhere from 16-24 yrs old. She even disregards the #No Killing Friends in the House rule! This is probably how Claudia would have been if she had been turned later in life.

Bonus: Adam + Louis eyerolls
