Im looking for symbolism in The Vampire Lestat for my book report but coming up seriously short… HELP????? Please???

This is a great challenge for you to come up with your own ideas, and start to build confidence as a writer by crafting your report in which you express your ideas. It would be robbing you of the experience to just do it for you. But I will help a little ;]

What even is symbolism? Colors and objects, certain actions, can be associated with a deeper meaning, which can be intentional or not on the author’s part.

Red is a color that’s used in TVL. So if I were to pick that as a symbol to investigate, I would look at things that are mentioned with this color. This is a short list.

  • Blood, obviously, and Lestat’s vision of the red stream when he is turned.
  • Lestat’s lip makeup he wears when he performed with the little actor troupe.
  • Nicolas has a red velvet frock coat.
  • Lestat’s red velvet cloak, given to him after killing the wolves.
  • Lestat getting kidnapped in that red cloak.
  • The murdered stable boy wearing a fancy red velvet coat.

What kinds of connections can you make? You could say that:

  • Red is associated w/ positive feelings like being rewarded, for Lestat’s service to his village. Velvet is expensive, and the villagers are showing that they appreciate him and respect him as their Marquis’ son.
  • Red lips make him look more attractive on stage, red lips usually imply that there is blood in them from kissing or the anticipation of kissing, so there’s that flirtatious excitement there.
  • When the Children of Darkness kill the stable boy, Lestat finds the body dressed in a red velvet coat:

“I kept thinking over and over of the stable boy, mangled and thrown there in that fancy red velvet frock coat. I had seen that coat before and I couldn’t remember where I had seen it. Had it been one of my own? Had they gotten into the tower? No, that was not possible, they couldn’t have gotten in. Had they had a coat made up identical to one of my own? Gone to such lengths to mock me? No. How could such creatures do a thing like that? But still… that particular coat. Something about it…”

Did they mean, “This is YOU Lestat, all dressed up like you’re the prince of France! We made this kid into a piñata and we’re going to destroy you as badly as this next BWAHAHAHAAAA!” ?

Skim TVL and find recurring colors, objects, actions, and list them. Then, you might start to see associations you can make.

You may have been asked this before, but who are your ideal VC cast members, face claim-wise? Have you ever seen anyone and though, “THAT’s exactly how I picture Lestat/Louis/Armand etc.?”

First of all, omg you are one of my fave VC fanartists *appreciative flailing* thank u so much for asking my opinion on this!

You guys, this is one of @muirin007’s fanarts [X] and still one of my absolute faves, from when I began this blog:

Yes, I have been asked this before but my opinions do change over time, and it’s always worth taking a fresh stab at it *,….,*

Some of this is a dreamcast for obvious reasons, and I’m limiting it to The Vampire Lestat, since it looks like that’s the focus of the new adaptation (And I’m also giving myself the difficulty of not recasting anyone from movie!IWTV bc u all know how attached I am to all of those actors by now). And I tried to pick ppl that would mesh well together as a set. Some characters get alot of commentary and some get none. These are the ppl that give me that “THAT’s exactly how I picture Lestat/Louis/Armand etc.?” feeling.

There are alot more options in the #VC casting tag, if you have some time to kill!

Lestat de Lioncourt: Brett Scallions from Fuel, circa the 90′s.

^screencaps from the Bad Day video

He’s already an actual rockstar.

He can play guitar.

His singing voice is close to my headcanon of Lestat’s. Yes, somewhat nasal, vocal growl, some range. IMO, he has the perfect build, and yeah, he’s attractive, but what makes him so magnetic and not just another slab of manflesh are his huge soulful eyes and that generous mouth, which really can look cruel at times. He just needs a little dental work and a quality hairstylist. [Some more of my fave pics of him here]

Runner ups: Taylor Hanson circa the 90′s (VERY CLOSE SECOND CHOICE), Gaspard Ulliel,

Charlie Hunnam, Travis Fimmel, Cary Elwes circa the 90′s, and Martin Rolinski.

Nicolas de Lenfent: Benedict Samuel, 2016

I’ve only seen him recently in The Walking Dead, and you have to see him in that, bc he’s as sweet and tender and intense and depressive as Nicolas needs to be. Physically, these full lips and dark brooding eyes, the wide smile that’s
almost manic and the frown that speaks to a deeper well of misery
that no one can hope to touch. Am I praising him too much? PROBABLY BUT I DO WHAT I WANT. [I wax on poetic about him a little more here]

Runner ups: David Garrett (ACTUAL violinist), Anthony Misiano (that high quality Joker cosplayer!), Sebastian StanJonas Kesseler (model), Ezra Miller

Louis de Pointe du Lac: Miles McMillan

Actually I haven’t found my perfect headcanon of Louis yet, but for now, he’s a placeholder. While Louis isn’t a ~starring~ character in TVL, he is mentioned, and what with being compared to Nicolas, I have to include him.

I feel like Miles has the slender build, the soulfulness to his expression, and he looks great dressed up w/ disheveled hair. [X]

[Moar pics of Miles and reasons here]

Runner ups: Florian Pessenteiner, Henry Cavil circa 2002, Trent Reznor circa the 90′s, Peter Steele of Type O Negative (Steele is a little too masculine but his eyes are perfection).

Gabrielle de Lioncourt: Grace Kelly, The Swan, 1956

image

SHE’S JUST SO PERF. She looks like she’s about to say, “BTW I do not hold back in combat so you better come at me with 110% bitch.”

Runner ups: Michelle PfeifferCate Blanchett, Nicole KidmanCatherine Deneuve circa the 80’s, Charlize Theron, Connie Nielsen.

Marquis Valère de Lioncourt: Timothy Omundson, 2016

image

I can’t explain. JUST WANT. He is a very likable bully in Galavant and tbh I imagine Lestat’s Dad would have a sense of humor, and that’s partially where Lestat got it from. Unfortunately, that wasn’t all he got from his father. [Moar gifs and pics I’ve gathered of him here]

Marius de Romanus: Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, 2016

image

I can’t explain. JUST WANT. A better father-figure for Lestat, one he would have given just about anything to stay with for awhile.

Also, David Bowie bc of reasons:

Runner ups: Michael Fassbender (CLOSE SECOND CHOICE), Lee Pace as Thranduil

The vampire Armand:

Björn Andrésen, 70′s

^He’s a fandom fave.[Moar of him here].

But okay, or,

The vampire Armand: Matthew Clavane, 2016

image

I can’t explain rn. JUST WANT.

[Reasons and more pics here

the vampire Magnus – Alice Cooper circa Suck, 2009

^Reasons should be pretty obvious.

Akasha, Queen of the Damned: Nicki Minaj or Rihanna

^[fanart source X, pic source X] BC OF REASONS. Women empowerment. Beauty. Mystery. All dat and a bag of chips. [Moar Nicki, Moar Rihanna]

Runner up: Tyra Banks.

So:

3 De Lioncourts:

And that’s just my opinion, you guys are free to disagree, but please do so w/ respect bc this took alot of guts and alot of time and ALOT of effort to put together!

Remember:

#Your Headcanon May Vary

Hi, ok random question. What do you think about Dinosaurs?

♛*laughs* That is pretty random, as far as random questions go! It’s a subject that I enjoy very much. I go through these phases of intense interest on certain subjects for nights to months at a time, and dinosaurs is a recurring focus.

I assume you mean the animals, and not a specific movie or book series (Armand gave me my first Dinotopia book as a gag gift for my birthday some time ago – surprising me that he remembered or cared at all – saying, “It’s a children’s book, because you’re a child,” and I actually loved it; the illustration is very imaginative and highly detailed). Or the live-action TV show Dinosaurs from the early ‘90s which, honestly, I still can’t decide if it’s my cup of blood or not.

Dinosaurs the animals, they’re fascinating. Omnivores, carnivores, “veggiesaurs.“ The study of other predators means a lot to me. We still have more to learn about them, some still exist today in some form. The tooth size of the T. Rex is nearly unbelievable, even when I held one in my hand. I admit I was a little envious bc my own fangs are quite small in comparison, but mine are much sharper and more elegant than a T. Rex’s, being that they’re for a similar, but different, physical use *grins*

Jurassic Park is a film Louis and I can watch over and over, even though it’s given him a few choice quotes to use against me *grumbles*

For the anon who was asking about the musical, I’d also totally recommend another recording (it’s called “Drew Tatsel [COMBINED]” on youtube) which has the actor who played Armand taking over the role of Lestat. He doesn’t look the part as much, but I’d suggest it if only for the fact that it’s later in the run, and they have Lestat’s transformation scene (and some other things) down much better, some really awesome stuff :)

Thank u ^,….,^ Now I have to watch all 3 and compare. Why can’t they just put cameras in and film it professionally and sell the copies to ppl it would be so much better for everyone *siiiiigh*

Here it is:

Do you know where I can watch the Lestat musical? There are clips on YouTube but I can’t find a good quality of the whole show.

DO I HAVE SMTG FOR U? Yes, yes I do. (ノ´ヮ´)ノ*:✧

The quality isn’t that hot but this here’s the entire show (pssst download them just in case they gets taken down!):

Opening night on Broadway, NYC, version:

San Francisco version:

I gotta watch the SF version bc I saw the NYC version and it was apparently stripped of alot of the awesome that the SF version had, sadly, and that’s one of the reasons ppl suggest for why it was so short-lived ;A;

UPDATE: @rookhart suggested I add this video “which has the actor who played Armand taking over the role of Lestat. He doesn’t look the part as much, but I’d suggest it if only for the fact that it’s later in the run, and they have Lestat’s transformation scene (and some other things) down much better, some really awesome stuff :)”

If anyone out there has a better quality vid, plz reblog and share w/ the class ^,….,^

Ya might also like my #Lestat the Musical tag, which has costume designs and fanart and stuff specific to the musical.

Hey, I saw your post about songs that remind you about VC. The song “Stage 4 Fear of Trying” by Frank Iero andthe Cellabration always reminds me of Lestat and Gabrielle. And even if you don’t get that vibe from the song i still recommend it :)

Oh wow… VERY MUCH AGREED #MY HEART #CRIES FOREVER

“Though I’ve traveled far
I’ve been back to the start
And I found some scars in places I have never shown to anyone
I don’t know why it took so long to get back home”
