That’s a really long answer, we don’t know ALL that much about his backstory, just that he was a Marquis (never named) in a little rural village in France, so he has some local power/respect in title, but he’s really poor, is not a particularly good husband or father, he’s blind by the time Lestat is 21… and we know that he treated Lestat BADLY during his childhood. Louis described a little of his time living at Pointe du Lac in book!IWTV.
In short:
For more, read The Vampire Lestat (the Marquis is in the beginning)(gif below used for humor, not intended to be rude!) The Marquis is not mentioned again in any later book. He does not get to vampire.
There is some fanon that the Marquis’ physical abuse of Lestat extended further, but that’s not in canon. If that were true, it could be part of Lestat issues with relationships and consent.
I think AR’s comment could be a little misleading there; she says Gabrielle is “cold and selfish and essentially a bad human being” and then, separately, that Gabrielle is “a bad vampire.“
^Reason enough for AR to dislike Gabrielle. Gabrielle defended him against his father and brothers, helped him run away to Paris, stayed with him for a good decade exploring the world, and then wanted to go off on her own. Idk if I agree that she treated him SO badly, though she could have shown kid!Lestat a little more affection, he was starved for it.
I don’t think AR means that coldness and selfishness = bad vampire. One would think that those are "good” vampire qualities.
(^Catherine Deneuve bc of reasons)
What’s MOST likely is that AR modeled Gabrielle after someone AR is not particularly fond of, thus our dear Gabs was doomed to never be able to bask in the glow of AR’s love ;A;
So who’s an example of a “good” vampire in AR’s eyes? Marius, Lestat, Louis. Vampires who still strive to be part of the fabric of civilization to some degree:
Marius still finds pleasure in painting, socializing w/ the coven members, he studies history, he’s a people-watcher.
Lestat is a sensualist; he wants to crash parties, sample all types of victims, acquire all kinds of toys, be Good at Being Bad, share affection with his covenanyone.
Louis does not in fact want to be left completely alone. Even though he’s a huge bookworm, he also has a deep appreciation for art, and does relish frequent *ahem* cuddles with Lestat, bc who doesn’t?
… Oh right, Gabrielle doesn’t. Gabrielle would rather not be around any vampires or people at all. For legitimate reasons, for sure, but she seems to have little interest in making any connections with civilization, no interest in art or fashion, only a tenuous commitment to her coven,… she wants freedom. Perhaps that’s too lonely and empty an existence for AR to contemplate.
But mostly it’s bc Gabrielle “treated Lestat badly,” and that she doesn’t need or want to be a regular part of Lestat’s family in the way he would love her to be, and since Lestat is AR’s precious bb, Gabrielle’s rejection of Lestat is a rejection of AR herself (which is slightly amusing considering that AR’s commitment to writing Gabrielle in character prevents her from modifying Gabrielle into someone she finds more likable!)(#PROFESSIONAL AUTHOR PROBLEMS)
You probably wanted a REAL answer, but I don’t want to spoil ya. Hit the jump for spoilation.
(For headcanons and to talk to a Viktor RPer, go to @viktor-de-lioncourt (who uses Jordan Sörbom as a FC) or @roselioncourt, both of whom care quite a lot more than I do about this character.)
Viktor is Lestat’s biological son, created during the course of Prince Lestat. In the mid-90s (I think?) Lestat had encountered some vampire doctor/scientists (they are vampires trained in and interested in the study of vampirism, running a lab just for that) and they *ahem* collect a biological sample from Lestat, with his full compliance.
HOWEVER, without his consent or knowledge, they use his sample to make baby Viktor! Baby Viktor has a mortal mother, so presumably, the DNA needed a little tinkering to make it work; Viktor is considered partially a clone, and in appearance he seems to be a carbon copy of Lestat (slightly taller, IIRC).
Lestat doesn’t know he fathered him until Viktor is no longer a baby (he’s at least 20?) and is used as a pawn in the shaking up of the vampiric matriarchy, so to speak. Father and son get reunited, everybody’s happy.
It’s unclear whether Lestat is also Viktor’s vampiric maker, he had asked Marius to be involved, and we might get more specifics in the next VC, Blood Paradise.
Louis is always Lestat’s fave, tho! We all know that.
I never thought I’d agree with that one time I saw someone say Hiddleston could make a decent Lestat and I disagreed because I couldn’t ‘see’ it,, but now that I’ve seen this, I might have to change my gods damned mind.
Well he already played the vampire Adam, “a post-millennial version of that glory-hog Lestat.” (an appropriate description by Amy Nicholson) I bet he could do our Brat Prince justice!
That’s a really tough question! When I read the books I read them all in MY voice, which sounds like an 11 yr old girl’s. So that wouldn’t work.
Probably gonna get alot of disagreement on this and that’s fine, bc voice casting is even MORE subjective that acting casting but I’ll give it a shot anyway. Reblog w/ your own ideas, and try to include links to vids.
Lestat – His voice is actually not that low, bc he was turned at 20-21, but it gets higher-pitched when he raises his voice. Has that slightly ragged singer’s voice edge to it. Can do a wide range, though, can imitate voices, musical notes, animal sounds, etc. Usually to perturb others.
Lestat will go up to Armand and say something like, “Ooooh Marius, paint me like one of your Italian boysssss…” in Armand’s voice which is always amusing, whatever reaction he gets.
(I didn’t include PL characters for the sake of brevity)(You can add them in the comments)(I also didn’t find good vid examples for all of these, sorries)
Louis – A mellow, calming voice. He can silence a room with a concise and gentlemanly eloquent statement. In canon, it’s mentioned more than once that you can hear his French accent. He himself doesn’t notice it, of course, bc he’s Mr. Pointe du Lacking-Any-Vanity-Whatsoever. Louis Garrel would be a good pick.
Armand – I’ve always felt like the Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan was very Armand in his singing voice, he has all the anguish and beauty that is Armand. In his speaking voice, it’s soft, and you can hear something broken there, but it’s smooth, controlled.
Daniel – Has a slight vocal growl, like River Phoenix (Or maybe Aaron Tveit), and altho he has a relatively low voice, he’ll always sound like he’s 20 on the phone.
Marius – Michael Fassbender, @sheepskeleton made me see it and I can’t unsee it. A commanding but gentle teacher’s voice.
David – As an old man, he had that perfect older Dad-vibe; comforting, ex-adventurer, wise, with more than a touch of charming sass. So Kurt Russell would be a good voice, but he needs the noticeable British accent.
post-TOBT David is David Gandy. He’s got the British voice, the charm, etc.! Young or old, David’s laugh is that old-man whiskey laugh, mostly air!
Gabrielle – She has a dignity about her and it comes through in her voice. Her laughter sparkles, but it’s rare. She has a very commanding Mom Voice, the kind where she can yell w/o raising her voice. Gonna go with fan favorite Charlize Theron. Or Nicole Kidman, or Michelle Pfeiffer, obviously, too.
Bianca – Scarlett Johansson. @everlastingporcelain has convinced me that Scarlett = Bianca and I can’t unsee/hear it. Sass, charm, vocal growl, wholesomeness, and an advanced maturity.
