As someone who studies jewellery and silversmithing (first year, so I’m no expert. yet :D) I think it’s unlikely to make one as detailed as Lestat’s and yet keep it at reasonable price. The design is very filigree indeed. But I’ll keep this in mind for next year’s workshop time, and let you know if I come up with something. (Also, in what way is yours fragile? Pewter generally is quite study.)

OMG A JEWELRY PERSON! [re: Lestat’s thumb ring] This was exactly what I was hoping for, that a jewelry person would see that post! I want to take hot jewelry classes so bad omg

(I can do coldworking w/ beads and wire, might try to sell those here at some point).

It could be done with moldmaking. You’d make a master ring with all the filligree detail (tbh idk how filligree is applied) and then cast copies of it in an affordable but durable metal. Maybe mine isn’t pewter, that’s what I thought it was, like those little figurines you get at Renaissance Faires… (like the dragon here) but if pewter is strong, then mine might not be pewter bc it has at least one hairline crack in it as you can seeee 😛

Yes, keep it in mind for next year’s workshop, message me privately, I could help come up w/ a design that might be easier to make. Like I said, I headcanon that Lestat has a lot of these, so it doesn’t need to be identical to the one in the movie ^______^

Can you tell me where you got your lestat ring?

I’m sorry to tell you that I got my Lestat ring in 1994 for like $15 at Hot Topic so it’s highly unlikely you’d find it there now 😛 (I’ve seen them pop up on eBay in different variations from time to time, tho. See below for that.) I’ve been meaning to make a post about MY thumb ring tho and this is the perfect excuse to do it!

When I compare mine to the ring in the movie, it’s different (other than the fact that it’s too big for me lol). I headcanon that Lestat has tons of these in different designs and that he likes how chunky and ugly rugged and masculine mine is ^______^

^I didn’t have another hand to take the pic so I had to use a banana instead of my wrist look how committed I am to you that I did that just to approximate the angle.

So you can see that the designs are very different, and the curved tip is pretty much just straight on mine, highly impractical for the vampiry purpose although mine can still pierce things.

image

^He’s got swirls of filigree, I have… melty loops? Almost a fleur-de-lys? I can’t wear it often bc it’s made of pewter, pretty fragile.

^This ring was not mentioned in the books, it was apparently Neil Jordan’s idea, modeled after the thumb picks guitarists sometimes wear (which I also had to buy bc reasons and might be wearing backwards?). It’s meant to be a teensy ref to Lestat’s rock career in the next book ;]

It’s also a lot of metal around the pad of my thumb so after a while you get that smelly effect like when you’re wearing a bandaid :- I’d love to get in touch w/ a jewelry designer to make one more like the movie version, and also more breathable on the underside, and sell it for a reasonable price bc ppl want it!

Here’s a listing on eBay from March 2015, the seller doesn’t appear active. Theirs is a lot closer to the movie version than mine, but much more expensive for their dedication (GBP 95.00; Approximately US $171.98). Lestat’s on the left.

I don’t know how many of the VC actively play video games or remember any pc games from the early to late 90s but the was a video game thriller-horror trilogy know as ‘The Gabriel Knight Mysteries’ which was heralded at its time for being the interactive equivalent of Anne Rice’s novels.

I also do not know how many of the VC fandom actively play video games, I played N64, Sega, old skool Nintendo… I stopped around Super Smash Bros. I never got into Pokemon but I hear the younger VC fandom is very nostalgic about that.

I have never heard of this

Gabriel Knight Mysteries trilogy… I looked into it and I don’t quiiiite see the VC connection. Can you be more specific?

But yes, I’d love a VC videogame like FUCK YEAH BATTLE RUE ROYALE! I imagine it would be mostly fighting among coven members, not a game with missions, but either would be fine.

The pixellation here makes this look like a video game. Could u imagine a VC videogame??! I’m visualizing a scenario like Super Smash Bros. w/ Lestat vs. Armand… or Louis & Claudia vs.Vagabond European Vampire No. 73….

Also lots of creative murders like the Fire Gift and the Explodey-Heart-Gift on mortals.

A chronological retrospective of the two rings Louis wears. For 200 years. Apparently Lestat could get him to change his wardrobe, kill people, and all kinds of other depraved things etc., but Louis kept his jewelry to a strict minimum.

One appears to be his wedding ring.

  • in the movie version, Louis is a widow. Maybe the ring was his wedding ring.
  • After the Dark Gift, he keeps it on. Maybe it’s earned new significance towards Lestat, now.
  • After Lestat’s “death,” Louis continues to wear the ring. Maybe it’s significant to both people he’s lost.

The other is a pinky ring.

  • This one may have just been fashionable to begin with.
  • Maybe it symbolized the child who died with his wife in childbirth.
  • Later, maybe it’s earned new significance when Claudia is given the Dark Gift.
  • After Claudia’s death, Louis continues to wear the ring. Maybe it’s significant to both “children” he’s lost.

UPDATE: anaryawe says:

(re: Louis & rings in the film) pinky ring was a gay code, or “no marriage plz”-code at some point. I’ve always thought that Louis’ pinky ring is his dead wifes wedding ring, and so signifies both “all the loves I’ve lost” and “tried heterosexuality once and it was a disaster”…
