That’s not canon!/Is that canon?

We as a fandom are often asked which books are the most important in VC, which ones need to be read before the new one comes out, which books we consider to be canon…

image

Every reader has to decide that for themselves. It’s great when we can agree on things, but some things are left ambiguous, either by unreliable narrators, discrepancies in the information we’re given, or simply some variation of “these characters are #ooc to me and I REFUSE ALL OF IT >:[ ”

“Reflecting on the total lack of consensus amongst my readers on which is my best book, or which is my worst, really, readers write fascinating and substantive responses to "Memnoch the Devil.” Others dismiss it as a total failure or where the whole series went wrong. Some claim the earlier Chronicles are the best; others praise the later books. A few claim my husband, Stan, was the real author. A great many readers embrace the entire series, with all its twists and turns.” Anne Rice, 11/01/2016 [X]

(I didn’t know ppl claimed Stan had written the earlier books! He certainly might have had a big influence on them, at any rate) ^@claudias-ashes pointed this out to me, and I skimmed the responses, lots of praise in there for AR. It’s good to see her acknowledging that we do not all recognize all of the books as canon, and she seems fine with that, even offering advice to writers who may find themselves in a similar situation. It’s a good stance to have, she’s not forcing anyone to accept any or all of it, so when we have our fandom debates about things, keep in mind that AR’s opinion is probably, like mine, #your headcanon may vary.

The rest of her quote is under the cut (cut for length not spoilers), along with the info that:

  • Lestat is never gonna die! well good bc he is the gotdamn Sacred Core now

  • She’s already all revved up to get started on the next VC! for better or worse

“…When I ask, “Which is your favorite book?” The responses are all over. Is this good or bad? Frankly, every author wants to be read, and for the readers to care. But why do I spark so much controversy? I’ve never fully understood. I’m passionate, the books are passionate, and I’m profoundly thankful to say the readers are passionate. But have writers ever had so much fresh and authentic feedback before? I don’t think so. You’ve got to keep your head, keep steering the boat, keep re-entering your world and finding your place there as you continue. I don’t want Lestat ever to die, not even when I die. Perish the thought. For me, he can’t die. He’s too irrepressibly alive, and I am too connected to him. I’ve tried to run away from him, but it has never really worked. Now, I don’t want to run away at all. I want to sail right into a third “Prince Lestat” book— right from “Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis,” and continue writing about Lestat as the monarch of a remarkable tribe. Vampire radio star, Benji Mahmoud with his broadcasts of news from the Vampire Court must be a metaphor for the author. What would it be like to slip into psychosis and wake up body and soul in Chateau de Lioncourt? Lovely. But the view from here is just fine.“

“Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis” – Book Tour

image

@roselioncourt and your very own @i-want-my-iwtv will be attending in NYC Nov 30, 7:00 pm (Barnes & Noble Union Square)! Anyone else going to any of these?

If not, what would you ask her if you could ask her anything (we/someone might ask for you!)?

“Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis” – Book Tour

Okay so like, I haven’t read a lot of the series, so I’m really curious about this because I at least think I saw something about it a while ago but I’ve never really been certain. Does Armand have a band, or is it just Lestat??

i-want-my-iwtv:

Yep, it’s just Lestat, with his band, Satan’s Night Out, not Armand ;]

How Lestat wants to look on stage:

How he really looks on stage:

And…

But also this:

[X]

GUYS, I had thoughts I wanted to share about the upcoming VC adaptation(s):

  • They better have some rockstar!Lestat moments in the new adaptation (like in the gifs above) Very important.
  • With awesome concert effects/lighting/pyrotechnics.
  • Don’t let Louis be involved in the pyrotechnics.
  • What would be even cooler is to have the movie and then also have the actor go on a real rock tour
that we could buy tix to go see!
  • Have him haul fans from the audience on stage and “bite” them (they would be planted actors).
  • Behind-the-scenes tour bus/backstage videos that are posted to YT or Instagram.

…Add to this post things you want to see in my Lestat Really Goes on Tour concept

(ノ^ヮ^)ノ*:・゚✧

I may feel bad for saying this, but I really, kind of don’t want there to be more movies. I know TVC is underappreciated but I really like that it’s a book fandom, book only (apart from 2 movies but w/e) and I just don’t want movies to cheapen it or represent the books in a bad light or for it to get overly popular- or the worst scenario- for it to be associated with the vampires of today *shivers*

I know what you mean, Louis would probably agree w/ you for similar (or the same!) reasons why he wants Lestat to stop writing any more books or authorizing his ghostwriter to do so.

[I just don’t want movies to cheapen it or represent the books in a bad light…]

^So I think Josh Boone is going to handle the material very respectfully, looking at the way he tagged up the Stand for that adaptation, he clearly is treating that book like it’s the Bible for that project *u* We’ll see how the Stand fandom (what do they call themselves? now I’m curious) reacts when that adaptation comes out, as my Dad says, “The proof is in the pudding.”

Anon definitely has some valid concerns, but I wouldn’t worry too much for the reasons given above from Burnadette and myself. Also, on your concern with Boone representing the books in a bad light or cheapening it, evidence has been shown on his twitter that he has been taking careful account of the series and been communicating with Anne pretty well, enough for the both of them to show love and gratitude to each other. Take this recent conversation for example:

(X)

Or these pics from his Instagram:

And there are other mentions all over the place with Boone mentioning his love of the series. I think we’re in good hands 🙂

Reblogging for @firelight-fading/@phoenifia‘s comments. We don’t have a wide sample size to state it beyond doubt but we’ve seen that when AR is involved (movie!IWTV, Claudia’s Story), the VC adaptation tends to be hella better than when she’s not.

uzusanageyama:

i have spent several days thinking about how my ideal piece of vampire chronicles media is not like, an actual well-done adaptation, but rather a mockumentary about satans nights out/the vampire lestat (in-universe band) because they are…. a southern glam rock band w a vampire theme who got rly famous for like 6 months in 1984, consisting of three stoner hair metal kids from new orleans and one (1) actual, real-life vampire who wants to make a music-video-per-song highly elaborate concept album about his life in a bid to, among other things, get his vampire ex boyfriends attention? and that sounds like perfect band mockumentary setup, to me

Hello! Are you thinking sometimes about that they can do tv series not movies about vampire chronicles? I love your tumblr so much!

Merci for the VC fandom love!

♥u♥

I actually think VC would work much better as a TV series than movies, since there is SO MUCH GOOD CANON. Each book has more than one movie’s worth of material in it, a TV series could go through scenes more carefully and potentially include more! Look how careful Hannibal was.

The fact is that we are supposed to get a TV series as a supplement to the movies! Josh Boone is adapting it into what he intends to be 3 movies and a TV series:

@firelight-fading linked us to an article about that, here’s the relevant snippet:

I am a patient person but JOSH: I WANT IT plz don’t let this get stuck in development Hell!

[…or for it to get overly popular-]

^It might get overly popular! We might have overly fanatic fans! But we can handle that, we already deal with having the Facebook factions of the VC fandom, some of which are pretty zealous in their loyalty to AR, and from what they ask her (like ”Is Lestat really bisexual/gay???”) I wonder how they read the same books as we did. Just bc there’s more interest in it doesn’t mean you have to participate w/ the influx.

We also had an influx when Prince Lestat came out, and they seem to be absorbing into our ranks alright.

[…or the worst scenario- for it to be associated with the vampires of today *shivers*]

^Comparisons will be made to other vampire media, reviewers will review, haters gonna hate. You can tune all that out. Boone knows it will be held to the standard of movie!IWTV, and the standard of all his fave vampire media, so I’m sure he won’t invest the time and effort into smtg he knows can’t handle that level of scrutiny.

In general, I think @phoenifia/@firelight-fading put it really well in their post here, which I will quote some lines from, (I bolded a few things for emphasis):

I think everyone needs to keep in mind that everyone doesn’t share a collective mind- everyone read these books individually so everyone is going to have a different opinion on how certain plot events happened and how certain characters look. Boone is one of those people and he’s the one in control of how this film will look and develop…

#Your headcanon may vary 😉

On that note, just because a new film is coming out doesn’t mean that the values of past productions, like the IWTV movie with Tom Cruise, decrease. You can still enjoy it. You can still view Tom Cruise as the “perfect” Lestat. You can still choose to ignore the new film. What the new film does mean for the fandom is possible growth. Old loves for the books series will be rekindled and people will hopefully return. New fans will emerge who enjoy the film or are curious about the books. Considering Rice has lessened her hold on fanfiction restriction, that means more fanworks will possibly be generated. Lots of good things on the way even if the film is a flop.

So all in all, stay positive, go see the film to support Rice and the series if anything and if you don’t like it then it’s a done deal and you can fall back on other VC-related works. We’ll get through this irregardless.

^We’ll get through this irregardless *hugs*

Senpai!!! IS IT TRUE THAT THEY ARE MAKING A REMAKE WITH JARED LETO AS LESTAT??!!! should we accept this?? what do you think??

WE DON’T KNOW WHO IS CAST AS LESTAT YET THAT IS STILL SPECULATION, MY FANGED LITTLE TRASH KITTEN.

image

Josh Boone (who is adapting TVL & he intends to do two more after that) tweeted about that back in May of 2016* but there has been no confirmation or denial from Leto or anyone else about it. So it’s ~speculation~

It was just announced that Leto is in Blade Runner 2, so he’ll probly be all tied up w/ that and not in stepping into Lestat’s boots and red-velvet cape!:

“Leto will join Harrison Ford, Ryan Gosling, Robin Wright, Mackenzie Davis, and Ana de Armas when Blade Runner 2 hits theaters October 6th, 2017.” [X]

*Although I may have acted somewhat excited about it a few months ago (and I don’t want to edit the post bc that’s a time capsule as to how I felt then), currently I don’t want a Leto!Lestat bc of the accusations against Leto, which you can google yourself bc I’m NOT going there. True or false, we don’t need that kind of baggage in our fandom, and there are PILES of younger actors out there who can play Lestat bc Boone wants this to be a trilogy w/ TV spinoffs and we need someone who can play 20 or 21 yrs old for a long time, and Leto altho he does not look like it is 44 yrs old.
