(THIS ONE’S FOR ME awwww!) Thanks bunches, Rem! <3<3<3
I actually got this message 3 days ago, but I was neck-deep (hehehe!) in birthday messages for Lestat, so I felt like this could be answered a little later, when the dust his confetti settled.
… Little did I know that the sh*t would hit the fan so spectacularly here in the US… where am I going with this, you ask? Well, in the face of such stress and anxiety and and and… all the emotions one can have in this situation… it’s so good to know my face (figuratively and literally) is loved, fangs ‘n all, and I’m still needed, and by unrelentingly plowing ahead, encouraging others to make – and making my own – fanworks, it can help us all get through this.
It isn’t just escape into a fantasy world. Fandom is letting the fantasy world supplement us, bolster us, give us hope. Fandom is drawing our friends and loved ones as close as we can, even separated by massive distance, we can at least communicate with and support eachother.
Homework assignment to everyone out there: Reach out and send a lovely message like this to someone today ❤
By the way, totally unrelated: how’s everyone’s immigration policies? Asking for a friend…
(This has been sitting in my inbox for far too long -6 months!!!- bc I was trying to come up w/ an extremely witty and elaborate answer, but you know what? This doesn’t need to be an extremely witty and elaborate answer. It just needs AN ANSWER and I can do it ok so here it is)
Yes I would like to vampire plz!
[^Portrait of moi by the amazingly talented @vaciel, it’s a WIP, I hope they finish it someday]
(Let’s assume I don’t get to choose or stay w/ my maker, and I don’t get to choose to be w/ the VC characters bc then this answer would be impossibly long. I’ll respond to those aspects in separate posts if anyone is interested.)
What would I do with my immortality? SO MANY. Vampiring: I would probably be the slayer of the evildoer, following in Lestat’s footsteps, but I’d also want to try wild animals like his mom does… I would write all about it, for sure. Every power and every limitation. The killing part of it would probably be tedious some nights and I would complain about having to go to those seedy places for my victims, and I would probably get into situations that would be somewhat out of my control and get shot in the back and I’d come home and complain about it even louder while my mom, a doctor, extracts the bullet fragments and stitches me back up and says “I told you so,” in so many words. “What, what did you tell me, Mom?” “Be careful what you wish for, obviously.” idk if I would turn my parents but it would be hard not to bc I love them.
We’re assuming I figure out the financial aspect bc currently I do not spend enough time and energy on that… I would need a good cash flow to support my adventures and artistic pursuits. I’d commission artists of all kinds, I’d maybe put together a studio collective, let ppl work at night with me or they could work during the day, I don’t really mind, as long as their work gets done. Probably have multiple projects of different kinds going on at any given time.
I wish I could say I would work on social justice causes, and maybe I would. I wouldn’t want the kind of exposure that might make me a target though, so if I did try to make the world a better place, it would be through my studio’s works, or financial support, or some other private way.
Emotionally, I would need a companion or two, so I would immediately turn my best friend into a vampire, she can have it now or wait until later but she does not has my permission to die. I have other friends I would want to bring with me, but I would be very selective, bc you’re stuck w/ these ppl for eternity, or they go mad and suicide, or the Dark Gift doesn’t work… soooo, I’d be picky about them.
“I was the seventh son and the youngest of the three who had lived to manhood.” – TVL (all the quotes going forward are from TVL, too)
^Yep, he’s the 7th son. We can assume that the other two de Lioncourt men had kids, so in some combination they had fathered at least four kids, (hence the plural “nieces and nephews”) and whether that was bc one of them had all four or they had two each, etc., Lestat doesn’t specify, so we don’t know.
¯_(ツ)_/¯
I don’t think the de Lioncourts had access to any young and wealthy women, if they couldn’t find one for the eldest son, they probably wouldn’t be able to find one for the youngest, either :-
The short answer:
Attitude issues :[ – Lestat’s dad (and alot of others) thought Lestat was bonkers (didn’t seem to connect that beating him up practically every other Thursday had anything to do with that!)
Lestat was broke af.
And the family relied on Lestat for hunting their dinner. They couldn’t afford to lose him or let him burden himself w/ more mouths to feed bc u know he would have had like 17 kids let’s be real.
As for Lestat’s marriageability:
1. Attitude issues :[
Lestat also had something of a major attitude going on about his existential crisis, so he wasn’t really on the best of terms w/ his father, who probably would have been the one to set in motion any plans to marry Lestat off.
“And in this unbearable state of agitation I commenced to do something I’d never done before. I turned to those around me and questioned them relentlessly.
‘But do you believe in God?” I asked my brother Augustin. “How can you live if you don’t!’ ”
… “You’re mad, you’ve always been mad!” [the Marquis] shouted. “Get out of this house! You’ll drive us all crazy.”
The village families probably thought Lestat was something of a bad egg, too, what w/ his trying to enter the priesthood at 12, and then doing a complete 180° by running off with the actor troupe at 17, and the crazy way he was acting, and harassing ppl. It probably didn’t go unnoticed in such a little town.
For more, hit the jump.
2. He’s broke af:
“I had no claim to the title or the land, and no prospects. Even in a rich family, it might have been that way for a younger boy, but our wealth had been used up long ago. My eldest brother, Augustin, who was the rightful heir to all we possessed, had spent his wife’s small dowry as soon as he married her.”
^Lestat is broke af. Augustin was the eldest and would be the one to get the title when the Marquis kicked the bucket.
Lestat has $0 to bring to a marriage, no title, no land, and no prospects (? I guess this is the word for assets of any kind). He doesn’t have much to sell himself ;n;
3. On the plus side… he was hot and he could hunt!
All Lestat really has are his Devastatingly Good Looks™
(he probably got the LION’S SHARE lol!), and his Particular Set of Skills™
(”I was the lord and the only lord anymore who could sit a horse and fire a gun,”).
Lestat was the family’s bread meat-winner:
“I had become the hunter. I brought in the pheasant, the venison, and the trout from the mountain streams – whatever was needed and could be got – to feed the family.” ^I forgot that he fished, too! I also remember him saying he talked w/ the villagers re: ideas he had for better crop productivity but I can’t find it.
…BUT REALLY, they all just wanted him shut up and kill stuff.
What his family needed him for was putting literal food on the table, which might have abruptly stopped if he was married off and moved out, or worse, moved his wife in. Another mouth to feed, and possibly more if they had had kids.
And the Marquis probably didn’t want any little crazy mini-Lestats running around, either!
(If Lestat had not run away to Paris, maybe shown that he could calm down in the next few years, we might have seen him married off by 25.)
[^ X] So Lestat spent most of his time out in the field, or eventually w/ Nicolas, seeking ppl who would really love him for him, and not just what he could do FOR them. He lived as much off the Marquis’ radar as possible.
And THAT’s why I think Lestat never even mentioned arranged marriage or forced courtship.
two from goretober this past fall, ritual sacrifice and gashes/lacerations. u v u the only ones I did digitally as I had no time to finish the whole month…. definitely going to start early this year uhuhu
Once you taste this, you’ll never go to another tavern again get it? she was gonna poison them she is an evildoer so don’t feel bad for her ok bye.
oh my god she was going to poison them?????
Well in TVL, Lestat talks about how he chooses his victims:
“When [Louis] says I played with innocent strangers, befriending them and then killing them, how was he to know that I hunted almost exclusively among the gamblers, the thieves, and the killers, being more faithful to my unspoken vow to kill the evildoer than even I had hoped I would be? …The whores I feasted upon in front of Louis once, to spite him, had drugged and robbed many a seaman who was never seen alive again.”
So he’s referring specifically to the ones he kills later, but this victim’s line, it seems to me, is implication that she intends to kill them, hence, they’ll “never go to another tavern again.”
Unless she’s really that confident about her tavern’s liquor, in which case, she means they’ll ONLY go to her tavern from now on! But I doubt that, in the context of Lestat’s ability to read minds and his usual aim for evildoers.
^Here is a gif of a cat in a bumblebee costume falling off a couch which has nothing to do with this topic but USE YOUR IMAGINATION you’re welcome.
As for Santino/Louis as a ship, well, you might take that up w/ @vampirexsantino, they are the only active Santino RPer I’m aware of, so the mun would probably be happy to chat about that ship 😉
I’ve been working my ass off in school, pulling 19 hour days and I’m exhausted and in need of a pick-me-up. This may sound selfish but I’d love for you to post your favorite vampire chronicles headcanons here, cute things in the books that delighted you and made you happy, quotes, facts, love between characters.
Fill this post full of why VC is important to you. Your ideas, stories, ideas, headcanons, facts about the characters we all love.
Doing this would give me something to look forward to at the end of a very long day.
@i-want-my-iwtv
Would you mind passing this along?
A pick me up for a fellow queen of the night.
Aw noes, sounds like you’ve gotta fever, and the only prescription is: a fresh infusion of VC Feels. Not selfish at all ;]
Passing this along, as per request. My headcanons, fave quotes, stories, etc. would fill BOOKS so I’ll leave these tags here for now, I’ll try to reblog this with some more specific things later.
I’m rereading TOBT now, tho, and one thing that pops immediately to mind is this line from Lestat’s narration, upon realizing his victim, that he’s been salivating over for a long time, is not really a cunning evildoer mastermind (i.e. a fancy cut of steak for him) but a blubbering barely-functioning mental case (i.e. an old fast-food cheeseburger w/ wilted lettuce):
“Yeah, look at him, this dirty, stinking, lumbering killer. Men in prison get better chow than this.”
(^italics added for emphasis bc that’s how I read it in my mind)
That’s the old Lestat brand of sass!
LOOK AT THIS is this not Lestat and Nicolas? (okay well that dude doesn’t really look like how I imagine Nicolas, but Cary Elwes as Lestat YES PLZ) From the movie Another Country. [gif sauce]
Aaaaand of course baby!Lestat loved animals bc of course he did and still does:
