Go ahead, suit yourself! *gestures to Louis, sitting on a nearby divan. Louis lowers the newspaper he was reading.* But know that his gift-giving skills are mediocre at best. He needs a lot of direction in that department. I canât deny that sitting in his lap might be gift enough, however *evil smile*
Just donât wriggle too much. Heâs got a low tolerance for ebullient people, I should know from personal experience *huffs off*
Well, I have never come across an interview with AR or director Neil Jordan about why Antonio was cast for Armand. I should have an FAQ and when I do, this will be right up at the top of that list!Â
I should probably watch IWTV with the director commentary again; he might have mentioned smtg about it and Iâve just forgotten, so I will do that.
ANYWAY, there are a bunch of theories as to why Armand is portrayed the way he is in the movie and my fave explanation, currently, is that movie!Armand is actually a blend of Armand and Santino.Â
Why do that?:
If they had cast a cherubic teenage redhead (or older creepy cherub dude trying to look 17 *cough cough* movie!QotD *cough*) it might have made Louis look like a pedophile, dumping his 11 yr old âbelovedâ (as he calls her) for someone only 6 yrs older (in appearance, anyway).
For people who hadnât read the book, someone cuter than Louis might have taken the sympathy away from him (who was supposed to remain the focus, itâs HIS story, after all). That would have been compromised by omg cute little redhead bby we want to snuggles you!Â
Armand was supposed to replace Lestat in the sense of being a better mentor/teacher/father figure to Louis, and so that someone had to be more paternal-looking. Someone who would look older.
The actor had to be a bigger star than Brad Pitt (or at least older than BP)
And he had to have some European or other ethnicity, because these Parisian vampires were supposed to be darker, scarier, more like Real Vampires of the Old Ways than the softer Americanized Vampires. Their vampire makeup (aside from their TdV costuming) shows them to almost be a different, more vicious species from Louis (who has to still maintain his âmost humanâ-looking vampire status).
In all this, Santino really fits the bill better, and my guess is that AR suggested it, she was the screenwriter, after all.Â
Well my initial thought was We can forgive but we will never forget.
^But tbh this was not her fault, and Iâm sure she did the best she could, and honestly, I had no idea how beautiful she really is under all that hideous makeup like wtf was up with that extra pocket of white shimmer eye powder in the inner tear duct area on all those vampires in QOTD it was hella weird!
And how playful she can be!
And how seasonally appropriate!
In short Yes, letâs please give Claudia Black a second chance at VC. As someone. Maybe Gabrielle even!
Fanfic?? thereâs no such thing as VC fanfic⌠pfffft. What are you crazy honestly??!
^Lestat is laughing bc he knows I is sarcastic.
I have a huge list of faves. HUGE. But the thing about VC fanfic is that we still have to be sort of careful about sharing it bc of reasons (under the cut if you wanna know why).Â
MY faves may not be what youâre looking for as I tend to skew L/L, since they are the OTP I am hopelessly afflicted with, but I have some drabbles and links to fic saved with other characters in my #fanfic, and #damn you and your perfect headcanon perfection tags here. Thereâs also some fine stuff in the @vcsecretgiftsâ archive.
has a mission statement about protecting fanworks from copyright infringement arguments, so I feel pretty safe reccâing stuff thatâs on there:
Gulfport: A British Petroleum Fanfic (Part One) by hw_campbell_jnr  – There are 2 parts and itâs incomplete but this is devastatingly beautiful long!fic. Hipster modern Lestat and Louis, Lestat going by a pseudonym, politics woven in, itâs just too good. It annoys me how good it is. I am annoyed. I would be less annoyed if it were COMPLETED.
First Light by Rebness– Such feels, Claudiaâs POV on her final night ;A;
The Grim Brothers by Rebness  – incomplete but itâs a fun little werewolf AU! I hope the author picks it up again someday.
In short, Anne Rice had waged war on VC fanfic in the mid-90s, sicâing her lawyers on many fanfic writers, eventually breaking apart fanfic sites (âspeculative fictionâ or âspecâ archives/communities) and driving many of these writers to stop writing altogether or do so in a more underground way.
Currently, sheâs had conflicting stances on fanfic, but hasnât made outright war at nearly that level. We try not to tag her in discussions of it, basically, we donât try to provoke her by making our caches of VC fanfic known. Especially on Facebook, where sheâs very active and might see it. She posted this on her FB in 2014 (I think):
They gather together and be sociable! Thereâs an ugly sweater contest, just to irritate Lestat (it really does!). Daniel usually wins bc he is willing to spend hours hunting second-hand stores to find the VERY WORST, and most authentic, tacky holiday sweaters. In fact Louis lets him choose. Without fail, Lestat has to rush Louis home to tear off such an abomination.
#Your headcanon may vary on this, but Thanksgiving, being an American holiday, is probably ignored by most of the coven. Lestat has thrown feasts for small groups of gangsters bad guys, however, just to really enjoy drenching them in the finest alcohol so he can sample whateverâs in fashion. Sometimes Armand, Daniel, Marius, or others, join him in this.Â
Marius, too, throws feasts for mortals, but when heâs hosting, theyâre as safe from him as the most of the Palazzo boys were; he loves the chance to argue things like politics and the current trends in cinema with collegiate people.
Xmas, too, may not be celebrated by all the vampires since most are secular in their beliefs, but they all like to do some measure of decorating for it. Lestat goes all out, with the biggest tree he can fit in the Rue Royale, layering it with ornaments and tons of tinsel (the poor cleaning crew are still finding bits of it 6 months later), and Louis has become very enamored with LED string lights. The fountain and plants in the courtyard is thoroughly threaded with lights in several pastel colors by December 1.Â
Awww, thatâs so cute! Which island do you live on? If you donât mind sharing.Â
(I admit itâs pretty cool living in New York, a place thatâs often mentioned in VC. We even have St. Patrickâs Cathedral. Memnoch the Devil locations.)
(AND I AM GOING TO NEW ORLEANS THIS THURSDAY awww yisss. Such bragging.)
AS FOR YOUR QUESTION: Someone else may have the answer, but if I recall correctly, I donât think the island is ever mentioned by name because Marius doesnât want Lestat trying to follow him after being expelled for Doing The Thing. I did a quick scour of TVL and B&G and didnât find anything more specific than this:Â
âAnd then as the 1700s commenced, I prepared to make a daring move to an island where I would rule supreme in the Aegean Sea, surrounded by mortals who would easily accept me as their lord, in a stone house which I had prepared for me by a host of mortal servants.â
ââŚI was on the terrace of this new house, gazing out at the sea and over the many small islands that surrounded me,â – Marius de Romanus, Blood and Gold
So itâs in the Aegean Sea, and itâs an island surrounded by many small islands.
Alonnisos seems to fit that description, although it isnât SURROUNDED. Itâs one of the few that has a bunch of islands around it in more than one direction. IDK what his definition of âsmallâ is for an island, they all look pretty small to me.Â
Thereâs also Siros, which is also surrounded by a number of small islands and is, itself, in the Aegean Sea.
