Blade (1998), dir. Stephen Norrington

Hello! <3 You know, many times in this fandom we've discussed if vampires can actually have sex in the ways humans do, and I think we're not really sure how that works (lol), but now I wonder about children. I mean, Claudia was technically Louis and Lestat's adoptive daughter (or close enough) but what about female vampires? Like, it would be somehow possible for vampires to be able to bear biological children? And would that turn out? (some weird vampire baby, maybe) IDK, what do you think?

(I think you mean female vampires in adult bodies, and that’s why you mentioned Claudia as not included, while she is female, she has a child’s body; and for the fact that she was the child of Louis and Lestat – she was not a vampire at her mortal birth.)

You might try the Twilight series, bc there’s a pregnant adult female vampire in that! I haven’t read it, but from what I’m told, it’s not a fun experience, to say the least :-[ Similarly, I think Blade is a half-vampire whose mother was mortal and whose father was a vampire. He can walk in the daylight bc of his mortal half, but he still requires blood (or a substitute) for his vampire half.

KEEP IN MIND: you don’t need to agree with me at all! This is just what I think, I think a pregnant vampire story could be very bizarre and horrifying and I rarely see it even attempted in fiction, so I think you could develop this concept and write the story of the pregnant vampire you want to see in the world!

[^X] In my opinion, if we’re talking about just Ricean vampire/vampire or vampire/mortal procreation, I don’t believe that vampires are able to become pregnant or impregnate, whether through penetrative sex or artificial insemination.* That, and the fact that they already have a means of procreation already, which is the blood exchange of the Dark Gift.

BUT WAIT:

… psssst…. Some ppl do not accept it as canon, but if you want a VC book that has vampires+pregnancy, go for the ride that is the book Prince Lestat. A vampire doctor/scientist enables one of the male vampires to have sex and impregnate a mortal woman. She carries this baby to term, and that child ends up being fully human! I would imagine that the vampire doctor/scientist was able to get the male vampire’s ‘boys’ swimming around again from being dormant for like 200+ years (that’s some vintage stuff!), essentially making them mortal again? I don’t know, and thankfully, it’s not explained in much detail.

*I had written a Wall of Text backing up my statement, but it felt like it was trampling on the curiosity of the anon to have all that, which I didn’t want to do, so I removed it. In the plainest terms, I don’t think Ricean vampires have active sperm or eggs, or a working uterus (has any female vampire in canon EVER mentioned getting her period? Nope!) and you need those to make a baby, even if it’s half-mortal.

Hi, I’m asking you because I don’t know where else to turn (pun intended). I’ve been a fan of Rice’ books, and vampires in general, since my early teens (so around 15 years or so) and I have recently started to regain my interest. However I find myself in the same pickle I was in when I was a teen: There is no complete register over all the different kinds of vampire lore from all the different works of fiction, or at least I can’t seem to find one. Do you know if one exists? And if so, where?

Hello! Ah yes, a very good question.

I’m not surprised that you’ve been into vampires in general for 15 yrs. Vampires are such good stuff and can be written/depicted/analyzed in so many different forms and variations. Limitless possibilities really, bc creative ppl can choose to stick to the more classic rules about them, and others throw them away, or explain work-arounds… limitless possibilities! JUST LOOK AT THESE SPECIMENS:

Lestat is THE ONE THAT DIDN’T GET INTERVIEWED but let’s all acknowledge that IWTV was at least 65% about him… also bonus points to THE HALF-BREED ASSASSIN w/ a sword out, inching up on THE SPARKLY ONE…

[^tumblr source, artist unknown, tell me if you know who it is, I did a reverse image search and had no luck]

As for a complete register over all the different kinds of vampire lore from all the different works of fiction, I think that would be fairly difficult, unless it was online and consistently researched and updated by more than one mere mortal.

These lovely ppl are being tagged bc they may know of such a register: @askavampirologist, @gothiccharmschool, @annabellioncourt, @forthegothicheroine, @fyeahgothicromance, @vampiressuck24. Anyone else who might help out on this is cordially invited to answer, too!

Every vampire compilation I’ve ever seen in a library or bookstore has been a curated collection only showing specific examples of different vampires, presumably so that the author could move onto other books/projects!

My own blog is a curated collection. While I feature other vampires in my #vampire tag (from the Lost Boys, Only Lovers Left Alive, What We Do in the Shadows, etc.), I actually don’t love all vampires in fiction (*cough* Twilight *cough*) enough to make this blog the register that you’re looking for 😛

Hope that helps!

Nah you’re not slim or pretty enough to be a vampire

floozys-deactivated20180908:

ok but like are you trying to tell me that there has never been a fat vampire? a fat person has never been bitten nor has a vampire ever drank enough blood to put on some weight? really?

First of all why would you say that to a stranger on the internet? I feel sorry for Anon, that they felt the need to put someone down this heartlessly. What a gross oversimplification.

How dare you tell someone they’re not pretty or slim enough for anything. Who made you the Decider of Prettiness and Slimness? I didn’t vote for you.

While it’s true that fandoms/media tend not to glamorize fat and/or ugly fictional vampires, they do exist.

@askavampirologist might have more to say on this, but here’s a whole pile of fat and/or ugly vampires some of which I found on a QUICK SEARCH OF TEH GOOGLE which Anon could also have done but was apparently too lazy or cynical to bother with doing.

1. Magnus, Lestat’s maker, is described as being ugly. He’s missing all his teeth except for his fangs. Were they lost/removed before he became a vampire or after? We don’t know. Usually, having all one’s teeth is a necessary element in being considered “attractive,” among other things. [Fanart by J. Oliver, Magnus on the right]

2. Meet Pearl from Blade, a FAT AND UGLY VAMPIRE. Someone made him (I don’t remember if Pearl was m/f) a vampire, was it before he was obese or after? Was it before he got ugly or after? Someone had a reason to do it and it might not have been based on beauty or slimness AT ALL.

image

3. Here’s Deacon from What We Do in the Shadows, and while I wouldn’t call him FAT, I wouldn’t call him SLIM either. Nor is he attractive to everyone even tho he thinks he is.

4. Here’s a Cassandra Clare quote on the subject: “Maybe they didn’t make vampires out of ugly people. Or maybe ugly people just didn’t want to live forever.”

^While I don’t necessarily agree with her, there could be some truth in that. Not everyone would want to have to kill to live forever, maybe it so happens that “fat” and/or “ugly” people are more compassionate in that regard and wouldn’t be able to do it. Or there have been

“fat” and/or “ugly” vampires who have chosen to die rather than continue vampiring for whatever reasons.

You want some more? Hit the jump.

5. Alan Moore made a “morbidly obese vampire bride” … “a fat monster that spends her day wallowing in the filth of an abandoned movie theater.“  It was part of a Swamp Thing series, I think. [full page here]

6. Lady Luljetta “is a female vampire who resides in the country of Lelitania, where is originally from no one really knows.” [X] There seems to be fanart of her out there! [fanart by @fatline, who will draw any and all fat related draw requests]

7. This is a very real book, I haven’t read it but apparently it’s part of a FAT WHITE VAMPIRE series!

8. Here’s another fat vampire series:

9. Here’s a coupla fat vampires in a cartoon:

I’m sorry to bother you, but I’m honestly curious about your opinion: do you think sunblock would work for vampires? (Silly question, I know, but I love reading your responses on things like this. Also, sorry if you’ve already answered a question similar to this one. ^^”)

Not a bother at all I LOVE being asked things and I do make an effort to answer bc honestly who wants to read a boring “Yes” or “No” like, no that’s boring bye. And, no, I don’t think I’ve answered this before so here we go…

Some vampires probably could do it with just sunscreen. Part of the difference is whether they can even be conscious during daylight hours. Mostly it’s due to their unique physiology. I could write an essay on this so I’m gonna keep it to 4 vampire types.

1. Meet Joe Black Deacon Frost, vampire from Blade, slathered up in sunscreen:

Well, Blade calls it sunblock, but same thing. It’s working for Frost in this scene (and I think he’s put it in his hair to cover his scalp, too, hence the greasiness), but as he says to Blade, “It’s a start, right? The goal, of course, is to be like you. Daywalker.” (Blade himself is a hybrid vampire so he can go out in the sunlight.) The rest of Frost’s skin is covered up with clothing which may also be treated in some way to protect him but his eyes aren’t protected, they should be affected but maybe it’s only light-sensitivity of the skin in that type of vampire.

For more, hit the jump.

2. This is Adam from Only Lovers Left Alive, getting a burn from sunlight:

Adam and Deacon share the ability to be awake during daylight hours. So it’s possible that Adam could wear sunscreen for protection, but given such a harsh physical reaction to such a small amount of exposure, I wouldn’t think any strength or amount of sunscreen would be strong enough for him, even if he was able to cover every last bit of skin, which would be a real challenge.

3. Louis de Pointe du Lac from movie!IWTV can’t handle the sunlight, but he’s fully conscious, reaching up to try protect himself.

Sunscreen might work for movie!Louis, too, but he would have the same issue as Adam, could he cover enough skin to make it work? I doubt it.

4. Louis and Claudia from book!IWTV fall into the Death Sleep during the day. They cannot be conscious during daylight hours, their physiology prevents it. So sunscreen, or other protective gear, would not work for them.

[fanart by Mangademon333]

The Death Sleep is basically the unconscious state that the Ricean vampires succumb to when their bodies sense the sun rising, and they only break out of it when the sun sets again or they’re under attack. There’s also fanon that they can wake from the Death Sleep during the day when under extreme emotional distress. Even defending themselves in their sleep, they’re not really conscious and only realize what happened when they wake normally. Lestat says in TVL:

And those mortals who did find us during the daylight hours, unless they exposed us to the sun at once, were doomed. For example, outside Palermo [Gabrielle] had slept in a cellar far below an abandoned house, and when she had awakened, her eyes and face were burning as if they had been scalded, and she had in her right hand a mortal, quite dead, who had apparently attempted to disturb her rest.

“He was strangled,” she said, “and my hand was still locked on his throat. And my face had been burned by the little light that leaked down from the opened door.”
