Hi! Love your blog! I’m doing Vampire Fiction studies in college and we have to choose a scene or a character from a piece of vampire fiction, book or movie, that represents how that fiction portraits male and/or female characteristics. I’ve chosen IWTV. Any suggestions on which scene or character I should pick? Preferably from the movie, because that would be easier and faster to find than if I had to flip through the whole book to find the right scene.

Thanks for the compliment on my blergh! ^_______^

This is a tough question for many reasons. It’s hard to know what speaks to you about Vampire Fiction, it may be something different than what speaks to me. I think you should watch the movie again and choose a scene that you love!

As far as the “how that fiction portraits male and/or female characteristics,” I’m not sure what your professor is specifically looking for in that regard. Many of the VC vampires do not necessarily conform to gender stereotypes in the way that they act or present themselves. In the real world, gender presentation can vary widely historically and geographically.*

One example that comes to mind, for me, is Lestat’s turning of Claudia.

image

[X]

Lestat says in the book: “I am like a mother… I want a child!” Are men not equally capable of having that desire? Is it a female characteristic specifically? I don’t know the answer. But this is an example of a scene in which using the book would be better than the movie, because this line was not in the movie.

BTW, this line comes at the end of the often-quoted “Evil is a point of view” monologue, where Lestat talks about the vampires being like God. God creates life, and Lestat wants to do so, too. Is God necessarily female in this regard? I don’t know that either.

In the movie, Louis only tries to stop Lestat in one small, feeble attempt, by catching his hand before it starts, and Lestat places some of the blame on Louis by asking him, “Do you want her to die, then?” Movie!Louis seems to accept some of the blame by allowing Lestat to proceed in ‘giving Claudia another life,’ and we see Louis watch like a nervous father might watch his wife giving birth, with equal parts wonder and horror at the obvious pain involved.

In the movie, his wife had died in childbirth, was he present for that?

Does that then give Louis the male characteristics? This scene happened in a slightly different (but significantly so) way in the book, which I’m not going into since this is already a longish post.

Another example is when Louis carries Yvette out of the plantation house.

image
image

^In this scene, it’s evocative of the traditional image of a man carrying his wife across the threshold, away from her friends and/or family, into the home they will share together. Louis is doing it in reverse. He’s carrying her out of the house, bc he has killed her, and is now returning her to her friends and/or family. Later in the movie, Santiago tries to convince a mortal woman to become Death’s Bride. Yvette was one, for sure.

So I would say that Louis has the traditionally male characteristics here.

There is so much more to both of these scenes, in my opinion, but I think I’ll stop here bc I don’t know if you are also supposed to do analysis and I wouldn’t want to do your analysis for you! I hope that’s okay with you, and I hope this answer helped inspire you to choose a scene that speaks to you.

*Even in the 2nd book in VC, when Gabrielle (a female character) chooses to cut her hair short and wear men’s clothing, it is unclear whether she (A) wants to be male, (B) does not want to be perceived as female, © simply would prefer the more practical freedom of movement in men’s clothing at that time, or (D) some other reason(s). She asks Lestat to call her by her name instead of “Mother,” which gives little further clarification to her preference for taking on a more male appearance. Today, women wear pants and other clothing that used to be considered male-specific, but these women do not necessarily identify as male.

So I normally don’t play the casting game, but I just watched the first two episodes of Will on TNT — a glam/punk telling of Shakespeare’s early career — and Christopher Marlow is so VERY Lestat to me. I don’t know if you’ve seen it, and maybe it’s just me, but wow. The actor is Jamie Campbell Bower. I’d send you a link but it won’t let me.

FIRST and foremost, one of the Lestat RPers who still uses JCB as a face claim, @cdf-archive (now known as @couer-de-feu, tumblr isn’t hyperlinking it OH WELL) wrote up a gr9 post about JCB as Lestat [X], excerpt under the cut.

I feel ya, I find that playing the casting game is hard bc ppl can be really dismissive of actors, pointing out what they think are physical limitations of the actors, or whatever, it’s easy to nitpick based on our own ideals of beauty.

A great performance is more than just the actor’s looks, it’s the harmony of every film crew member’s job done well, from the grips, to the sound ppl, to the costume ppl, to the director, and so on, not just the actors. But talking VC casting can be fun to see which of our choices are shared by others ❤

So YEAH, JCB was a somewhat popular FC for Lestat RPers at one time, so your opinion is/was shared by others! I’m gonna reblog a few pieces of fanart after I post this that are basically JCB as Lestat, so stay tuned 😉 EDIT: I have fanart of Paul Boche as Lestat, not JCB! I’ll reblog those. But can someone send me some Lestat fanart based on JCB? I feel like I’ve seen it but can’t remember where…

image

^I don’t have a joke to go with this, I’d made it

aaaages ago

for @coeur-de-feu. Maybe it’s Lestat reacting to coming home to a Louis dressed only in a sheer green scarf, surrounded by piles of red roses, for Lestat’s birthday or smtg, lol.

I haven’t seen Will yet but it looks like an intriguing and snazzy take on Shakespeare! Admittedly, I have not been a huge fan of Jamie Campbell Bower, bc I haven’t seen the stuff he’s been in, I’m not a YA fan… from the pics I’ve seen of JCB he has seemed too skinny/bony for my own headcanon of Lestat (and I admit that’s based on my own ideals of beauty)-

BUT BUT BUT, these pics of him from Will are looking, actually, very #Lestatuesque to me!

image

^Like, maybe it’s the hair*, the lighting, the expression, etc., (a combination probably) idk what it is, but his face seems less HELLO CHEEKBONE now for some reason? He’s very Lestat here, to me. Like he’s in thrall, listening to Nicki playing violin music.

*The hair would need SOME more styling and highlights but JCB being a natural blond (I think?) should make it easier to brighten his hair up than it was for Tom, who has never been able to pull off a really bright blond in any movie I can remember (even the silver looked kinda strange in Collateral but I digress…)

image

[^X from @foreverjamiecampbellbower] ^Even here, yes, JCB has cheekbones you could slice your hand open on, but maybe the stubble is also just, giving that jawline and generous mouth the attention they deserve? IDK it’s working for me!

I think JCB has enough of the physical part nailed down that the rest can be built on his performance. Tom had limitations appearance-wise, too, but the acting won ppl over who don’t even like him in any other roles.

This is already a long-ish post so for more of my thoughts on him, hit up my #jamie campbell bower tag.

Also, hit the jump for a quote from @cdf-archive/@coeur-de-feu that I think is relevant here.

The fact is, we all have our own ideals of beauty and our own headcanon of these characters. It’s highly unlikely that one actor will satisfy all of our expectations, and @cdf-archive wrote up a great post about JCB as Lestat [X], excerpt below:

“There will always be inconsistencies, everywhere you look. But it’s not really even whether or not I find him perfect. It’s his imperfections that make him perfect, to me. And perhaps that’s what Magnus found in Lestat – his imperfections gave him an indescribable yet authentic beauty and Magnus wanted to immortalize those features by turning Lestat into a vampire, even though Lestat did not want it. It was okay with Magnus that Lestat had a few things here and there that weren’t completely perfect; he found him extraordinarily beautiful, regardless.”

#Eloquent eloquence

(btw you can send links like this: www(.)website(.)com/www[.]website[.]com, any variation that hides the “.”, while it won’t come through as a /clickable/ link, it’s still a link for reference)

A young Robert Plant IS Lestat.

Oh definitely, he is alot of ppl’s headcanon for Lestat ❤ here is a teeeensy collection of him being Lestatuesque… if u wanna reblog these, reblog from their links instead of this post, or from both 😉

Do you have any favourite or well written vc fics? I keep only finding younger audience’s writing or things that aren’t to my taste

Hm, I mean, I don’t want to rain on anyone’s parade, I can see where you’re coming from… sometimes I’ll start reading a fic from a new writer and feel like they might not have read very much canon, or they’ve only seen the movie(s), so they don’t really have a take on the characters that meshes well enough with mine, so it makes it a little hard for me to suspend disbelief, but other times, I’m really impressed with their ideas! It’s pretty subjective but I like to be surprised *u*

image

^Kitty by @berrym [X

For specifics, it depends what you’re looking for, which characters, pairings, time period, longfic/one-shots/drabbles, angst, fluff. So many!

I have a huge list of faves. HUGE. But the thing about VC fanfic is that we still have to be sort of careful about sharing it bc of reasons (under the cut).

Also, the danger of recommending any fic runs the same risk of doing those Follow Forever posts, which I don’t do, because I’ve seen ppl who were left out feel hurt and excluded. I like fluff and angst, and I ship L/L so most of my faves are L/L specific, and I also really love one-shots from the IWTV-era and TVL-era, and other “missing scenes” from canon books 3-5 and #current vampire happenings which could take place anywhere from 1986 to now. There are alot of good fics that don’t fall into those rubrics, which are very subjective, so ppl are free to reblog/comment with other stuff.

One of my most fave VC fanfics is an L/L-specific one, it’s incomplete but I recommend it whenever I have the opportunity: Gulfport: A British Petroleum Fanfic (Part One) by hw_campbell_jnr – There are 2 parts and, again, it’s incomplete, but this is devastatingly beautiful long!fic. Hipster modern Lestat and Louis, Lestat going by a pseudonym, politics woven in, it’s just too good. It annoys me how good it is. I am annoyed. I would be less annoyed if it were COMPLETED.

Since I’m on the GULFPORT (in caps bc I am just that passionate about it) subject I’ll elaborate a little. Not a lot happens plot-wise, but this is the kind of angst and fluff I really love. It offers an insight into their characters that hits me just right, I haven’t seen anything quite like it. It plays forwards and backwards in the established timeline, Lestat makes these strong statements and then immediately backtracks and scratches them out, harshly, it’s more of a train of thought sometimes than a narrative, it sprinkles in some headcanons, a peek into L/L email exchanges, and a little of Lestat’s recovery from his coma which just… really hurt my heart, in such a good way. It basically killed my muse for any creative fanworks for months after I first read it, bc I felt like, Why bother, if this exists? BC we always need more fanworks, we’re insatiable, fanworks are the lifeblood of a fandom, and even the person who wrote GULFPORT enjoys other’s fresh fanworks 😉

ANYWAY. We all know that there is fic in secret places and I don’t broadcast those places on my blog, in case certain ppl change their mind about their stance on it. However! Archive of Our Own (aka AO3) has a mission statement about protecting fanworks from copyright infringement arguments, so I feel pretty safe recc’ing stuff that’s on there (in no special order):

Anyone is welcome to reblog/comment with recs!

Hit the jump for a teensy fanfic history lesson.

In short, Anne Rice had waged war on VC fanfic in the mid-90s, sic’ing her lawyers on many fanfic writers, eventually breaking apart fanfic sites (“speculative fiction” or “spec” archives/communities) and driving many of these writers to stop writing altogether or do so in a more underground way ;A;

Currently, she’s had conflicting stances on fanfic, but hasn’t made outright war at nearly that level. I try not to tag her in discussions of it, basically, I don’t try to provoke her by making our caches of VC fanfic known. Especially on Facebook, where she’s very active and might see it. She posted this on her FB in 2014 (I think):

VC Pokemon Go headcanons

Here are some I received as per my request, added some pics and my comments in italics ;D

@riverofwhispers: Headcanon: Trinity Gate is a Gym location. And Benji currently has the highest ranking Pokemon and controls said Gym for Team Valor.

Awww! #headcanon accepted.

@we-called-it-our-conversation:

(1) Lestat has a Flareon [X] named Louis. He feeds it a lot of Pokémon candy and occasionally uses it to beat Armand’s gyms just so he can rub it in his face.

image

^You had to pick a fire type for Louis…  lookit this cutie!!! #headcanon accepted.

(2) Armand has a Pokémon named after Lestat; it’s a Magikarp [X].

image

^This offends Lestat. Lestat is offended. Armand explained it thusly: “Well it’s the only pokemon with a mouth as proportionately large to its body as yours is-”

image

[^X by @feltstickers]

(3) Louis prefers not getting involved in this game.

^If that’s so, he’ll still be happy to wander around town w/ Lestat for hours on his hunts for Pokemon.

@hyakuya-lestat:

(1) HC that Armand actually fell in love with his starter, but got frustrated with how low level it was. he went out to look for other of the pokemon, but ended up being to attached to the original that he spent an entire week focusing on just that pokemon in particular and now its super overpowered compared to everything else he has.

Awwww!

#headcanon accepted.

(2) Hc that Louis actually really likes caterpie but is embarrassed about it. He thinks they are the cutest thing ever, and they are the main reason he wont let Lestat look at his phone.

image

Yes definitely! Louis likes several grass and water types, and he loves collecting fanart of them. The whole coven would tease him if they knew about it bc he should only like FIRE types right???

#headcanon accepted.

[^couldn’t find that caterpie’s original source but I am 99% sure it’s by ItsBirdyArt]

(3) HC that Lestat has a pokemon named after all of his friends.

Yep! And sends them into battle based on current vampire happenings.

#headcanon accepted.

@annabellioncourt:

(1) I could see Armand getting OBSESSED with the game.

^Armand loves videogames, it’s practically canon.

(2) Louis Could Not Care Less; Marius gets annoyed by it,

^Marius is probably annoyed by it bc it creates a lot of stopping in public walkways, and occasionally Old-Man-Shouting-at-Cloud Marius a little bit agrees w/ the “It’s terrible, the kids these days staring at their cellphones!” argument. #headcanon accepted.

image

(3) Lestat takes ENDLESS selfies of himself with various Pokemon, and for the first month or two, cheats by using vampire abilities to run to all the pokestops and be master of multiple gyms.

^OH THAT SNEAKY BASTARD. But I think he’d let the younger kids beat him in battles, and act all dramatic about it. “How could you do this so easily?? I am crushed! I will cry myself to sleep tonight!”

(4) Daniel occasionally forgets how unhuman he looks and accidentally scares kids sometimes. And adults.

^Yes, especially with how still vampires can be, a kid has bumped into him once or twice, thinking he was a mannequin. #headcanon accepted.

Send more if you like!

Nah you’re not slim or pretty enough to be a vampire

floozys-deactivated20180908:

ok but like are you trying to tell me that there has never been a fat vampire? a fat person has never been bitten nor has a vampire ever drank enough blood to put on some weight? really?

First of all why would you say that to a stranger on the internet? I feel sorry for Anon, that they felt the need to put someone down this heartlessly. What a gross oversimplification.

How dare you tell someone they’re not pretty or slim enough for anything. Who made you the Decider of Prettiness and Slimness? I didn’t vote for you.

image

While it’s true that fandoms/media tend not to glamorize fat and/or ugly fictional vampires, they do exist.

@askavampirologist might have more to say on this, but here’s a whole pile of fat and/or ugly vampires some of which I found on a QUICK SEARCH OF TEH GOOGLE which Anon could also have done but was apparently too lazy or cynical to bother with doing.

1. Magnus, Lestat’s maker, is described as being ugly. He’s missing all his teeth except for his fangs. Were they lost/removed before he became a vampire or after? We don’t know. Usually, having all one’s teeth is a necessary element in being considered “attractive,” among other things. [Fanart by J. Oliver, Magnus on the right]

image

2. Meet Pearl from Blade, a FAT AND UGLY VAMPIRE. Someone made him (I don’t remember if Pearl was m/f) a vampire, was it before he was obese or after? Was it before he got ugly or after? Someone had a reason to do it and it might not have been based on beauty or slimness AT ALL.

image

3. Here’s Deacon from What We Do in the Shadows, and while I wouldn’t call him FAT, I wouldn’t call him SLIM either. Nor is he attractive to everyone even tho he thinks he is.

image

4. Here’s a Cassandra Clare quote on the subject: “Maybe they didn’t make vampires out of ugly people. Or maybe ugly people just didn’t want to live forever.”

^While I don’t necessarily agree with her, there could be some truth in that. Not everyone would want to have to kill to live forever, maybe it so happens that “fat” and/or “ugly” people are more compassionate in that regard and wouldn’t be able to do it. Or there have been

“fat” and/or “ugly” vampires who have chosen to die rather than continue vampiring for whatever reasons.

You want some more? Hit the jump.

5. Alan Moore made a “morbidly obese vampire bride” … “a fat monster that spends her day wallowing in the filth of an abandoned movie theater.“  It was part of a Swamp Thing series, I think. [full page here]

image

6. Lady Luljetta “is a female vampire who resides in the country of Lelitania, where is originally from no one really knows.” [X] There seems to be fanart of her out there! [fanart by @fatline, who will draw any and all fat related draw requests]

image

7. This is a very real book, I haven’t read it but apparently it’s part of a FAT WHITE VAMPIRE series!

image

8. Here’s another fat vampire series:

9. Here’s a coupla fat vampires in a cartoon:

Don’t you think that the actor that played Lucius Malfoy in Harry Potter will fit Marius ??

That’s Jason Isaacs. Um, I looked at some HP screencaps and such and it’s hard to tell bc Lucius Malfoy’s default expression is very un-Marius to me :- There is more to Marius than flowing platinum hair, blue eyes, and a Roman face.

However, it could work, I did find some stellar fanart of him that seemed more Marius-ish:

I aggressively agree with Nicki Minaj as Akasha!

IN THIS OUTFIT PLZKTHANXBAI [fanart source]

She’s almost too likable?? Look at this Disney Princess Fabulous Queen [fanart source]:

But also this [fanart source]:

“Now, listen to me, beautiful one,” she said. “I love you. You’ve awakened me from my long sleep and to my great purpose; it gives me joy merely to look at you, to see the light in your blue  eyes, and to hear the sound of your voice. It would wound me beyond your understanding of pain to see you die. But as the stars are my witness, you will aid me in my mission. Or you will be no more than the instrument for the commencement, as Judas was to Christ. And I shall destroy you as Christ destroyed Judas once your usefulness is past.” – Akasha, Queen of the Damned.

sweet baby jesus is your username really an interview with the vampire/top gun crossover reference? because that may actually factually be the most magical thing i have ever encountered.

My dream came true ; I’ve been waiting for this ask for so long. My dear, thank you! Yes, I’m also a
huge fan – for many wrong reasons – of Top Gun, Maverick/Iceman is my fav
OTP ever (with Ethan Hunt/Will Brandt and Louis/Lestat ; yep I love to pair Tom
Cruise with guys, don’t judge me
). Seriously I had never seen so much tension between
two characters in a movie before, it’s kinda amazing. Anywayyy, I digress. I also
made some unsuccessful crossover edits of the two movies. I mean it’s such a weird, specific and personal crossover I didn’t even hope to get notes (big up to every person who liked or reblogged it btw!) but Top Gun is the reason why I felt in love
with IWTV then VC soooo… I regret nothing haha!

takemetocoffin-or-losemeforever

Let me hug you buddy! *so much happiness*

But really, when you think about it, there’s some similarities… For example, the plot. Let’s call our hero(es) “the brat” (suits both Lestat and Maverick, nope?)

– First, the brat spot a dude

– he “fools around” with the aforementioned dude

– and it ends up with an “ambiguous” relationship.

– Of course, the brat crashes (in the water) and burns

– so he’s all sad and shit

– but finally, he fucking rises like a phoeniiiiiiiiiix.

Both movies also involves:

– flying (with sexy dudes)

– “fooling around” (with other sexy dudes)

– a shit load of sexy dudes (doing sexy stuff)

– heterosexual backing

– a touching piano scene (to make you cry when the piano guy dies in the next scene)

– Tom Cruise riding stuff

– deep romance
