So, I’ve been prepping to read iwtv again. As [I] expected, I keep getting side tracked by reading passages I’ve completely forgotten and coming across random sentences that I never noticed before and I realized how much I loved the character of Lestat. Even under Louis’ narrative. I loved him and I miss him so much. šŸ˜¢

*nods* I know that feel. When writing fic, sometimes it’s easier to write Lestat from the outside, let other characters describe things about him that even he himself is unaware of. Someone telling a story about you, describing you, they’re painting a portrait like an artist would, and it’s often much more accurate than a photograph ā¤

At the booksigning 11/30/16, AR told us this comment a friend made to her re: Lestat’s portrayal in IWTV

(bc even AR was surprised that Lestat was the one she wanted to explore more!):

ā€œYou drew Louis in black ink… and then painted Lestat in flaming colors!ā€

image

Flaming colors is right.

Please check Anne Rice’s facebook page, she’s talking about a television series!! She said she has the theatrical rights for Vampire Chronicles once again!! A TELEVISION SERIES OMG

YES. WOW. A TV series could cover a lot more ground than one movie or a trilogy/series of movies, and lock in a cast for a long period of time, lots of benefits to that medium! The way TV series seem to invite fan engagement lately is also a factor, whether it’s a negative or a positive is up to how the showrunners handle that… fanservice can be good or bad.

(I got a ton of messages like this in the past few days, catching up on them is like trying to drink from a fire hydrant and I love it, the booksigning last night actually really helped settle my thoughts on it all.)

image

^I feel like I’m Lestat asking ppl to scooch over to I can rejoin you all in this madness *u*

So this is relatively old news even though it was only 5 days ago that the bomb dropped on us, we’re all reacting in our own way, I’ve seen some of the posts and will be sharing/reblogging them, from what I can tell so far there’s a lot of anticipation, anxiety, support, and also disappointment and what the heck happened w/ Josh Boone?!,Ā the main questions seem to be:Ā

Who is going to join the team now?! and,

Will this adaptation be faithful to the books?!

In answer to these, at the booksigning last night (11/30/16), AR had this to tell us about the new TV series:

  • It’s been 8 yrs that the adaptation has been in the works in Hollywood, but she didn’t elaborate on what kept it from progressing (AR and CR must know, they’ve probably learned a thing or two about what obstacles lie in their path on this, I feel like they can navigate these things better now than ever before).
  • Their official VC FB has gotten 2.8 million hits and thousands of shares so far!
  • AR and CR are writing the pilot episode and a treatment for the first 2 seasons.Ā And it seems like they want to perfect their vision before inviting others onto the team.
  • Their agents are deluged w/ phone calls from producers and studios who want to talk with AR and CR whenever they’re ready šŸ˜€
  • AR thinks it’s gonna work out this time. She and Christopher recognize that TV and film are collaborative art forms, and there will be compromise, but they will be polite and firm that it’s not gonna happen if it’s not the way they want it to be. <– Appears to be their commitment to be faithful to canon.
  • This whole book tour is celebratory of them getting the rights back ā¤

Stay tuned to #VC News…

What if Claudia wasn’t killed by the Parisian coven. Would Louis leave her for Armand anyways? Would she and Madeleine be happy together? Bc I feel like her searching for answers was her equivalent of teenage years, she was angry with the world. But towards the end she has accepted that not all her questions have answers and she seems less frustrated with her condition, for me this is when she reaches adulthood. My poor baby didn’t have the oportunity to leave her own life and be genuinely happy

-My poor baby didn’t have the oportunity to leave her own life and be genuinely happy-Ā

image

Actually, in the first version of IWTV, Claudia wasn’t killed off by the Parisian coven (from the Vampire Companion):

ā€œIn the first version of [IWTV], Claudia eventually goes off with three vampire brothers whom she meets in Paris. She does not die. As such, it was as if Rice had attempted to give her daughter a form of immortality. Rice, however, experienced psychological problems that cleared up only after she had rewritten the ending – by killing off Claudia and taking Louis through an experience of intense grieving. This version was much more cathartic for Rice.ā€

One could say that killing her off for the sake of Louis’ development was harsh, and it is known as theĀ Stuffed into the Fridge trope. Just bc it’s a trope doesn’t make it any less effective, tho!Ā

ā€œA character is killed off in a particularly gruesome manner and left to be found just to offend or insult someone, or to cause someone serious anguish. The usual victims are those who matter to the hero, specifically best buddies, love interests, and sidekicks.ā€

-What if Claudia wasn’t killed by the Parisian coven. Would Louis leave her for Armand anyways?-

That was his intention, that she was satisfied with her new companion and that he would still see them, still communicate with her. You don’t go through that kind of relationship (I think the wordĀ ā€œbelovedā€ in movie!IWTV was perfect, bc they’re closer to eachother than those in a brother-sister or father-daughter relationship).Ā

Louis always wanted to see Claudia happy and satisfied, and he beat himself up a lot for his failures in that. When it became clear that he was torn between her and Armand, it was Claudia who brought Madeleine into the picture and it was only after a lot of argument (and Armand’s influence, which Armand admitted to later) that Louis gave in to Claudia’s request to turn Madeleine for Claudia.

Louis and Claudia’s last real conversation in IWTV together was about this (under the cut, for length, abbreviated here), and you can see that they’re both not thrilled with the separation but that it has to happen.

Claudia: But do you
truly understand what you are choosing in Armand?

Louis: It’s meant to be. It’s almost
that sort of direction… He alone can give me the strength to be
what I am. I can’t continue to live divided and consumed with misery.
Either I go with him, or I die.Ā
And it’s something else, which is
irrational and unexplainable and which satisfies only me…

Claudia: Which is?

Louis: That I love him

Claudia: No doubt you do, but then, you could love even me.

Louis: Claudia, Claudia.

Claudia: I only hope that when you have need of me, you can find me… That I can get back to you… I’ve hurt you so often,
I’ve caused you so much pain.
ā€˜Ā

-Would she and Madeleine be happy together?-

image

[^XĀ from Claudia’s Story]

Possibly a very unpopular opinion but: I don’t think Madeleine and Claudia were sexual w/ each other in the mortal sense, but there was more to them than a mother-daughter relationship. So Yes, I think she and Madeleine could have been happy together in a way that was impossible for Claudia and Louis.

I don’t think Claudia’s pursuit of Madeleine was purely for a platonic mother-daughter relationship. That may have been part of it, and it was how she sold it to Louis because he couldn’t perceive Claudia as more than his daughter or as an adult trapped in a little body who would be capable of being involved in a romantic way with anyone, and she needed him to actually do the work for her since she was unable to perform the Dark Gift herself (and I do think she tried before asking him). Ā

While it may not have been a relationship in a more conventionally romantic sense (I don’t believe they had anything sexual, in the mortal sense, going on), I do think Claudia/Madeleine was a ship of sorts, more of an emotional relationship. Claudia was the one in control, she was comparatively older and stronger in personality.

Hit the jump, cut for length.

-Bc I feel like her searching for answers was her equivalent of teenage years, she was angry with the world.- Ā

She had every right to be angry! Not their intention, but her ā€œparentsā€ condemned her to an eternity of body dysmorphia and being perceived as smtg she was not, potentially worse than death. Similar things happen in real life, too, ppl are born with syndromes that cause them to appear ā€œdisfiguredā€ or ā€œunderdevelopedā€ to society at large, and they too, may be angry with the world or their own parents for that. Teenagers going through puberty AND adults long past that phase can have body horror and be frustrated that their external physical vessels do not match who they are inside. From what I understand of it, there are many forms of body dysphoria.

Even w/o the body issues, she still would have sought answers to the questions Louis had asked. He didn’t seem to have any body dysphoria but he had plenty of questions beyond any equivalent of a teenage phase. They were both extremely frustrated at the lack of answers.

-But towards the end she has accepted that not all her questions have answers and she seems less frustrated with her condition, for me this is when she reaches adulthood.-

That’s life! Not all of our questions will be answered, but she at least seemed to have achieved some inner peace with not having the answers.

She may have reached adulthood long before that, when she decided to assassinate Lestat for his treatment of her. She wanted revenge on the world, so she took it out on the one who seemed most responsible for her existence. That seems like an adult decision to me, to kill the person who gave you life. But then, she may not have been physiologically capable of ever ā€œreaching adulthoodā€ since the human brain doesn’t finish development until around 20-25 yrs old [X].

Louis and Claudia’s

last real conversation in IWTV together:

ā€œ`But do you truly understand what you are choosing in Armand?’ [Claudia said.] I turned away from her. There was something stubborn and mysterious in her dislike of [Armand], in her failure to understand him. She would say again that he wished her death, which I did not believe. She didn’t realize what I realized: he could not want her death, because I didn’t want it. But how could I explain this to her without sounding pompous and blind in my love of him. `It’s meant to be. It’s almost that sort of direction,’ I said, as if it were just coming clear to me under the pressure of her doubts. `He alone can give me the strength to be what I am. I can’t continue to live divided and consumed with misery. Either I go with him, or I die,’ I said. `And it’s something else, which is irrational and unexplainable and which satisfies only me… ā€˜ ā€œ

`Which is?’ she asked.

`That I love him,’ I said.

`No doubt you do,’ she mused. `But then, you could love even me.’ ā€

`Claudia, Claudia.’ I held her close to me, and felt her weight on my knee. She drew up close to my chest. ā€œ

`I only hope that when you have need of me, you can find me …’ she whispered. `That I can get back to you … I’ve hurt you so often, I’ve caused you so much pain.’ Her words trailed off. She was resting still against me. I felt her weight, thinking, In a little while, I won’t have her anymore. I want now simply to hold her. There has always been such pleasure in that simple thing. Her weight against me, this hand resting against my neck.

That’s not canon!/Is that canon?

We as a fandom are often asked which books are the most important in VC, which ones need to be read before the new one comes out, which books we consider to be canon…

image

Every reader has to decide that for themselves. It’s great when we can agree on things, but some things are left ambiguous, either by unreliable narrators, discrepancies in the information we’re given, or simply some variation of ā€œthese characters are #ooc to me and I REFUSE ALL OF IT >:[ ā€

“Reflecting on the total lack of consensus amongst my readers on which is my best book, or which is my worst, really, readers write fascinating and substantive responses to "Memnoch the Devil.” Others dismiss it as a total failure or where the whole series went wrong. Some claim the earlier Chronicles are the best; others praise the later books. A few claim my husband, Stan, was the real author. A great many readers embrace the entire series, with all its twists and turns.ā€Ā Anne Rice, 11/01/2016 [X]

(I didn’t know ppl claimed Stan had written the earlier books! He certainly might have had a big influence on them, at any rate) ^@claudias-ashes pointed this out to me, and I skimmed the responses, lots of praise in there for AR. It’s good to see her acknowledging that we do not all recognize all of the books as canon, and she seems fine with that, even offering advice to writers who may find themselves in a similar situation. It’s a good stance to have, she’s not forcing anyone to accept any or all of it, so when we have our fandom debates about things, keep in mind that AR’s opinion is probably, like mine, #your headcanon may vary.

The rest of her quote is under the cut (cut for length not spoilers), along with the info that:

  • Lestat is never gonna die!Ā well good bc he is the gotdamn Sacred Core now

  • She’s already all revved up to get started on the next VC!Ā for better or worse

Hit the jump…

ā€œ…When I ask, ā€œWhich is your favorite book?ā€ The responses are all over. Is this good or bad? Frankly, every author wants to be read, and for the readers to care. But why do I spark so much controversy? I’ve never fully understood. I’m passionate, the books are passionate, and I’m profoundly thankful to say the readers are passionate. But have writers ever had so much fresh and authentic feedback before? I don’t think so. You’ve got to keep your head, keep steering the boat, keep re-entering your world and finding your place there as you continue. I don’t want Lestat ever to die, not even when I die. Perish the thought. For me, he can’t die. He’s too irrepressibly alive, and I am too connected to him. I’ve tried to run away from him, but it has never really worked. Now, I don’t want to run away at all. I want to sail right into a third “Prince Lestat” book— right from “Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis,” and continue writing about Lestat as the monarch of a remarkable tribe. Vampire radio star, Benji Mahmoud with his broadcasts of news from the Vampire Court must be a metaphor for the author. What would it be like to slip into psychosis and wake up body and soul in Chateau de Lioncourt? Lovely. But the view from here is just fine.“

– Anne Rice

I saw that someone asked you about AR not mentioning Armand, and I hope that person isn’t too upset because Anne mentioned in a comment some weeks ago that Armand is definitely in the book (although he doesn’t play a major role) so that’s something! I completely understand, I can’t live without him either

Yep it was on FB.Ā @kittyslover (one of my ARFB Deputies!) sent me the link to AR’s post from 9/24/16 [X], here’s confirmation that Armand is there:

And bc of the lengths I go to for you ppl, I read all the relevant comments and screencapped these for you (I cropped out icons so the text could be a little larger).

She also had to describe vampire shipping again. *sigh* I JUST TALKED ABOUT THIS FFSĀ #your headcanon may vary.

Umm… so Anne Rice released a video (the day before her birthday) on her facebook that said she’s already working on a new Lestat book to follow Atlantis.Ā (T_T) Bless.

See Video Here

^I can’t embed the vid, so here’s a screencap, anyway I watched it and took notes so you don’t have to the LENGTHS I go to for you and here are my notes:

  • Many new characters in PLROA
  • Louis – not a major player but a very important player.
  • Marius – plays a significant role
  • Fareed – plays a significant role
  • Viktor – is there
  • Rose – is there
  • Has some thoughts on the changes in the writing industry
  • ā€œThe name of the game is to keep writing and keep dreaming…ā€
  • Probs not ever returning to Cry to Heaven, but she loved it, ā€œHow the wounded can fight, how we can redeem ourselves through art and sexuality.ā€
  • Into the next VC story EVEN MOAR DANGERS AND CHALLENGES that come out of the Atlantis story.
  • Mayfairs – not going back right now, but there’s active interest in Hollywood, for a quality TV series. Promising talks going on.
  • AR does alot of planning w/ her writing, but ā€œyou have to be willing to throw it all away in the process.ā€
  • She quotes Sandy Gustin: ā€œGod triumphs on the ruins of our plans. And I think novelists have to be ready to triumph on the ruins of their plans.ā€
  • She loves us all

sheepskeleton:

all I could think of when Anne posted it on fb

^This is Lestat reading smtg in an attempt to seduce Louis.Ā

Louis:Ā ā€œYour book is upside down.ā€

Lestat:Ā ā€œI was… considering the illustrations upside down… it’s an artistic technique to-ā€

Louis:Ā ā€œI’m sure that’s exactly what you were doing.ā€

What do you think Louis role will be in the next book? ( also, do you think Anne will be mentioning the crossovers this time? )

image

Louis will probably spend a lot of time fawning over Lestat, there will probably be a wedding and he’ll probably get another gawdy emerald ring to add to the pile of them. IDK but apparently he can fly now, so he’s using his vampiry gifts finally! Hopefully we’ll see some more of that.Ā

image

[^X] AR has said, at a booksigning I went to in Oct. 2014, that she didn’t think the Mayfair/VC crossover aged well over time. @daniel-james-molloy has a theory that we’ll see Taltos in PLROA. We’ll see!Ā

AR wrote on 10/20/14

[X]:

ā€œI’ve been asked often: will there be crossover books involving my vampires and my werewolves? Will we see more crossover books with the vampires and the Mayfair witches? — As I see things now, no, I will not be doing crossover books again that involve two different series.Ā The simple reason is: I’ve discovered from experience that each series has a certain texture, a certain ambience, a certain dominant set of aesthetic rules; and crossovers seldom do justice to the series involved in this regard. I’m proud of the hybrid vampire/Mayfair novels (Merrick, Blackwood Farm, and Blood Canticle and appreciate very much those readers who enjoyed them), but these books have not aged well in my mind and heart. I also think many readers were confused by them, especially Mayfair readers who did not especially care for the vampire books I wrote. But I would never say never to anything now. I love to experiment, break new ground, take twists and turns. Who knows? And I do appreciate the questions on this very much.ā€

@kittyslover informs us that:

A) Louis is gonna be in PLROA ā¤

B) MAGNUS is gonna be in PLROA ugh why anne why. Oh well at least he’ll just be in the background, as she’s said. And no Mayfair witches, probably, bc she didn’t even address that in her reply.

I was working on a novel called Born for Atlantis, and I just couldn’t get it to work. I thought, ā€œWhat if I could somehow combine this with Lestat and the vampires?ā€ And it was like, everything worked. Something happens to me when I write from Lestat’s point of view. There’s no question about it. By the time I was done, it felt inevitable, like it always had been…. It was a rare experience.

Anne Rice, Entertainment Weekly (August 5, 2016)

So, @roselioncourt brings this article to our attention, and I think the relevant quote is above, but there’s a little more about AR’s interest in Atlantis in there.

The relevance is that AR had been working on this Atlantis book and added VC into it later. We’ll see how well that works, but this is an answer to the question,Ā ā€œAtlantis… what?ā€
