The thing about this is that sculptures like these in art history were for the male gaze. Photoshop a phone to it and suddenly she’s seen as vain and conceited. That’s why I’m 100% for selfie culture because apparently men can gawk at women but when we realize how beautiful we are we’re suddenly full of ourselves…

It’s almost as if nobody wants to admit that they might not be prepared to do the work it takes to love somebody. And it can be laborious. To be intimate with someone who is flawed (which is the standard) requires us to expose our own flaws. We don’t talk about the heavy responsibility of that. We don’t talk about how we’re too lazy or too cowardly sometimes. We instead accuse love of being elusive. It isn’t. It is omnipresent. It asks us to be better people. And sometimes we flat out refuse.

I saw my life as if I stood apart from it, the vanity, the self-serving, the constant fleeing from one petty annoyance after another, the lip service to God and the Virgin and a host of aunts whose names filled my prayer books, none of whom made the slightest difference in a narrow, materialistic, and selfish existence. I saw my real gods…the gods of most men. Food, drink, and security in conformity. Cinders.

Since I’ve struck 310 followers, I’m gonna do a little art giveaway. If you want to participate, here’s what you need to do if you’re interested.

  • Like this post for one, and two, reblog it; there are no limits on reblogs.
  • I’ll select the winners and give you each one picture (HAND-DRAWN).
  • You may send in your requests here and I shall see what I can do.
  • Once I’ve selected the first, second and third place winners, I’ll notify you by either tagging or private message; please specify how you’d like to be contacted.
  • Note: I do these all by hand and with computer. It’ll take me a little bit of time, but I can assure you I won’t forget it. My hand is detailed and the artistic OCD-whore in me needs to finish it to be complete as it can be.
