Did you get my coven ask? Just wondering and a little worried since I have had a terrible streak of tumblr eating them or them not going thru. Thank you!

Yes, I did get your ask, but I have decided not to answer it. I still haven’t finished PLROA bc of reasons, but bc I still don’t entirely accept PL as canon, I will just post to the fandom to answer, momentarily.

Re: Whether our gang of vampires are a formal coven, and what that means, and how welcoming they are of eachother and how welcoming they are towards the as-yet unknown vampires? There is alot of welcoming in PL and PLROA towards new and unknown vampires. They all seem to want to be together. What do we really know of the covens of old? The Children of Darkness were a coven, with branches in different locations, that all served (probably) a Dark Pope of some kind. Or maybe it was a democracy? We don’t really know. We know that they had laws, rites, and a sense of purpose. They had common goals.

What is a coven?: With people, there is wide variation in what constitutes the structure of witch covens. Vampires are not people. I don’t know that I would call the Children of Darkness a “cult” even, I feel like it was more like the wolf packs that occur in the wild. More organized because the vampires had communication, written texts, and more goals than simply survival, but I would think there would have to be a major amount of inhuman element(s) to it all.

Just discussing the dividing up of vampires into covens is a delicate issue bc it deals with the exclusivity of vampires being already set apart from society as a whole, and then this whole push in the recent books to gather them up into a *~Tribe~* so that they no longer have to be wandering lost souls and/or forming their own small covens. It’s 2017, and according to canon, they’ve gathered, they’ve chosen a LEADER. They have the beginnings of a community to share their knowledge/gifts/news, they have the beginnings of a justice system, for the airing of grievances. They have court performances for entertainment! It feels like we have the United Vampires of the World ™ or something.

[^This gif is from the ‘91 movie ‘Hook’** in which we have a tribe of Lost Boys (it’s no mere coincidence that there’s also a vampire movie called ‘the Lost Boys,’) with a leader they elect, who reluctantly takes on that role. It’s kinda like Lestat accepting leadership of the vampires of the world even though, yes, the power and camaraderie is nice, does he really want to sacrifice so much of his own nightly freedom for it? ‘Hook’’s Peter Pan doesn’t want to stay in Neverland despite all the benefits, so he delegates leadership before he goes back to Real Life.]

So, the Tribe concept, well, it’s clear to me that it’s something many fans really enjoy, and I enjoy it as AU fanfic. Even if noone else enjoyed it but AR herself, it falls under #Live and Let Live ^______^ IDK what the breakdown is within the Tribe itself, but from my reading, it feels nebulous and amorphous, most of the vampires (those in good standing in the Tribe) are basically invited to come and go as they please from one coven house to another all over the world.

TL;DR: So many VC relationships, both platonic and romantic, are up to the individual reader’s interpretation, and how much the individual reader projects their own imagination onto it, that’s where groupings of any kind are formed.

**More comparisons between VC and Peter Pan could be made, especially w/ this adaptation, but that’s for another blogger and/or another time.

re: vc casting. What about Samuel Larsen as Louis?

Maybe! I haven’t seen him in anything, so I don’t know acting-wise, but physically I think it could work.

^He has that good narrow-ness of face that I headcanon for Louis… or Nicolas. He has these nice slightly feathered eyebrows, light eyes that will work with green contacts…a nice set of full lips.

TBH from these gifs, there’s a sass and a mischief that just feels more Nicki to me!

Also, I’m gonna reblog a fanart of him that I think has a Nicki-esqueness to it, watch for it 😉

Why did Louis have a wife in the movie, instead of a brother?

I don’t know the real reason, I don’t know anyone who does. I don’t know if it was Anne Rice’s choice, or Neil Jordan’s.

I think there were a lot of factors that went into that decision, and it stirs up alot of issues and questions, alot has been written about it and alot more can be written about it!

image

TL;DR: 1) I think it was done to cut time, Louis being distraught about losing a wife and child is immediately understandable to anyone who hasn’t read the books. It starts off the film with Louis questioning the reasons of a God that could punish him for seemingly no reason at all.*

2) The other main issue is whether Louis is/was straight or if he actually was bisexual/homosexual/etc. as a mortal and Lestat entering the picture and pulling Louis into vampiring made it possible for Louis to let go of his preconceived ideas and social/religious/etc. repression and accept himself for what he really was. Neil Jordan probably wanted that left open-ended and unanswered.

(*It could have set up the whole Louis-frustrated-about-how-religion-plays-into-vampiring, but that was cut from the film, too.)

1) One of the audiobook recordings for IWTV has a runtime of 14 hours and 28 minutes [X] and that’s ALOT OF STORY to condense down into a movie that can’t be that long. Scenes have to be cut.

  • The movie we got is 2 hours long, and in 1994, I seem to remember movies being more in the 1.5 hour range. Titanic, clocking in at a little over 3 hours long, was kind of ridiculed by the critics for that lengthy runtime. These days, a 2-3 hour movie is not really as big a deal.
  • Building in the right amount of time/scenes to show the circumstances of Paul’s death and why Louis felt so responsible for it, that would have increased the runtime and delayed the amount of time we get to the actual vampiring. I can’t check the film right now but I think Lestat appears within the first 15 minutes of the movie, for good reason. To get the vampiring STARTED.

2)

In 1994, same-sex marriage was legal in zero states. Now it is the law of the land. Movie!IWTV was already pushing the envelope to suggest that Louis/Lestat were in a romantic relationship together. So, if Louis starts his story as having been married to a woman, it would appear that he’s established as being straight. On the surface.

  • HOWEVER! this is a Neil Jordan movie, and one of his previous movies, the Crying Game, Jordan had gender issues and sexual orientations as main concerns, so perhaps starting Louis off as SEEMING TO BE STRAIGHT and then having Lestat swoop in and now Louis is “with” Lestat somehow, experiences that moment of intense intimacy when he is given the Dark Gift… so Jordan seems to be asking the audience if Louis was actually bisexual or homosexual as a mortal and suppressed it? Since we never see Louis and Lestat actually make love on screen (aside from the Dark Gift happening), does it still count as a homosexual relationship?
  • ^I think Neil Jordan wanted these questions left open-ended, and for that to be part of the exquisite torture that is the Louis/Lestat ship. Is it platonic or romantic? Jordan isn’t telling, and neither is Louis.

There is, as I said, a lot more to it than that, but these are the main issues that come to mind for me, and I’m also trying to be concise. Anyone can reblog/comment with more ideas.

Just found out from my mom that my childhood hairdresser used to cosplay as Lestat and Louis with his boyfriend… If only I could meet them now cx

Aww, yeah I’d love to see some cosplay pics from decades ago… And I feel like a hairdresser could actually do really well w/ their hair. Hair styling is an art form!

Interviews & Rec (11/?)

OMG I’M SO GLAD YOU CAME BACK WITH YOUR YOUTUBE VIDEOS THEY ARE SO GREAT I SERIOUSLY CAN’T <333333

REALLY? omg this makes my heart happy. JUST THIS ONE REACTION made the vid worth doing… *hugs Anon*

I have other ideas in the pipeline JUST YOU WAIT at least one of them, just talking about the CONCEPT makes me laugh so I know it’s worth the effort.

Greetings Your Highness, I wonder if Armand has NOT cheated u in Theatre du Vampire(I don’t know if I misspell it) and has helped u get Louis back to New Orleans with releasing Claudia and Madeline, what would u do after home with Louis?

(//ooc: I doubt that that could have happened, but I’m going to indulge anon bc I know who they are and I know their intentions are good, they just want a little fluff so here it is 😉 )

♛In a perfect world, ma petite, Louis would have returned to New Orleans with me, and I would have opened all the floodgates, given him everything, I would have told him everything he ever wanted to know. I know now that he was strong enough for it then. I was also in terrible physical and emotional shape at the time, and knowing him the way I do now, I know he would have helped me to heal in every way he could. This kind of open communication and support would have brought us closer together at a time when we were both wounded and needed it so badly.

And then of course I would have done my best to romance him from the beginning, better than I’d done before.

I’m just here to tell you that you could have killed me, because I’ve found your youtube channel and while watching your videos I laughed so hard I almost choked. The “Mostly Straight” one… ohmygawd

Thanks! That’s the kind of reaction I aim for! ❤ (Here’s the vid anon refers to, and here’s my YT channel.)

[X for the tumblr post for this one, more of my vids on tumblr are mixed into the #parody tag]

You know, I’ve been thinking about this lately. Since Antonio Banderas played Armand in the IVTV movie and he didn’t looked like the character in the books, a lot of people were disheartened about it, but actually, i think it was divine. Yes, Banderas didn’t look like Armand and there’s a lot of theories on why they choose him, but his performance was so great. It was like a “Dracula version” of Armand, so fancy, so dark, so dramatic, so… charming. I thought it was great. What do you think?

Well you probably know you’re preaching to the choir on that one 😉

Most of my thoughts on Antonio!Armand are in #Defending Antonio, so you can check that out.

However, I totally understand that other people were disheartened about it, and I’m not looking to argue with anyone, just saying that I was able to enjoy Antonio!Armand, and I’m glad other people were able to enjoy him, as well ❤
