My ask is in two parts. And maybe a little hard. Louis says this in IWTV when they leave for Paris. But what does it mean? “The great adventure of our lives. What does it mean to die when you can live until the end of the world? And what is `the end of the world’ except a phrase, because who knows even what is the world itself? I had now lived in two centuries, seen the illusions of one utterly shattered by the other, been eternally young and eternally ancient, possessing no illusions, living

(2/2) moment to moment in a way that made me picture a silver clock ticking in a void: the painted face, the delicately carved hands looked upon by no one, looking out at no one, illuminated by a light which was not a light, like the light by which God made the world before He had made light. Ticking, ticking, ticking, the precision of the clock, in a room as vast as the universe.”

Are you homework anon? I got this ask right around the same time as the homework ask…  part of your assignment (if you are homework anon!) is probably to practice critical thinking on your own and figure out what you think this passage means.

It doesn’t have to mean the same exact thing to everyone, and that’s what makes discussion about canon interesting, all our varied opinions. It’s great when we agree, but we don’t always on all topics 😉

But of course I wrote out a long answer despite the fact that I didn’t want to! Oh well.

“The great adventure of our lives.”

I’d suggest that the opening line is the topic sentence on which he’s going to build support or undermine the statement, or both. Louis has already had a number of great adventures (or so it appears to the reader!), so what makes him call THIS one the great adventure? Only now, embarking on the great Looking for Other Vampires: European Tour w/ Claudia, does he feel the freedom Lestat wanted him to feel when he was first turned. Louis didn’t embrace his vampire nature then, he fought it, he fought Lestat, he was not having a good time at all, and although he did reluctantly admit to enjoying some of the aspects of vampiring, he was holding back. Claudia shows up and Louis has a new purpose, he loves her, and she helps to inspire in him a hunger to be alive. ❤

“What does it mean to die when you can live until the end of the world?” – He’s not saying that he can’t still die, bc he’s seen a vampire be killed (at least, he thinks so). But now he’s really considering immortality as a possibility, maybe he wants to be with Claudia forever!

“And what is `the end of the world’ except a phrase, because who knows even what is the world itself?” – Now he’s asking questions of his topic sentence, he’s unsure of the excitement he feels about this new chapter in his life. Is it legit? Can he actually give himself over to enjoying it and being excited about it? Keep in mind that he’s never mentioned traveling before (except for the fact that he came to America from France), he’s lived an isolated life in NOLA and probably expected to die there. He might really have mixed anxiety and excitement about everything and everywhere outside of NOLA.

“I had now lived in two centuries,” – it’s around 1860 when he leaves NOLA with Claudia, he was alive at the end of the 18th century, and experienced half of the 19th century. Obviously a lot of things changed, as he says he’s “seen the illusions of one utterly shattered by the other,”

Then he goes on to talk about himself, and how he’s had internal changes of his own, probably re: embracing his nature, finding a will to live, and I don’t want to translate each piece for you bc it seems fairly self-explanatory: “been eternally young and eternally ancient, possessing no illusions,”

This is Louis being poetic:

“living moment to moment in a way that made me picture a silver clock ticking in a void: the painted face, the delicately carved hands looked upon by no one, looking out at no one, illuminated by a light which was not a light, like the light by which God made the world before He had made light. Ticking, ticking, ticking, the precision of the clock, in a room as vast as the universe.”

^but it seems to relate to him feeling outside of nature, outside of religion, and yet still touched by God’s light, being a vampire, like something that can’t affect anything but can watch and take notice of all the things evolving around it. Something Marius later calls a continuous awareness:

“And for no apparent reason, I was possessed of a strange idea about life, a strange concern that amounted almost to a pleasant obsession… That it came to me in these last free hours as a Roman citizen was no more than coincidence.

The idea was simply that there was somebody who knew everything, somebody who had seen everything. I did not mean by this that a Supreme Being existed, but rather that there was on earth a continual intelligence, a continual awareness.

…My idea of who or what it was, was vague. But I was comforted by the notion that nothing spiritual – and knowing was spiritual – was lost to us. That there was this continuous knowing…” (TVL)

^It seems like something Anne Rice has always been passionate about, how the vampires exist in this world, and how they are dependent upon it, fascinated by it, and yet kept apart from it, how they absorb and contain all this historical knowledge of this world that they’re obsessed with by their very nature… and she has carried through to some extent in even the most recent VC.

If you had to choose: armand x daniel or armand x marius, and why?

Omg I’m not touching this debate, with all the Armand/Daniel and Armand/Marius shippers out there ready to fight me one way or the other, and the fact that Marius is very problematic. Not taking a side on this one.

[^Armand by @garama]

I’ve never been wildly passionate about any of the three of those characters, personally, so you might ask RPers for those characters what they might say. Might be some active Armands on this post.

I can understand both ships, and I can appreciate variations of them in canon and fanworks. Best for me to leave it at that.

comixqueen:

I’ve been reading Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles lately, and I had to draw this one out.

Storyception! Being told a story of that one time Lestat was told a story by Marius of that one time Marius was told a story by that crispy elder guy about Queen Akasha.

Do you think Marius was jelous when Armand was hooking up with that english lord? Because I think he was, which is curious because he didn’t have a problem with him fooling around with the half of Venice

Marius is one of our more Problematic™

characters in canon, so take every discussion about him and his treatment of Armand/Amadeo with a huge truckload of salt and patience, bc there are some strong opinions out there.

Marius knew about Armand (known then as “Amadeo”) and Lord Harlech. He might have been jealous, but didn’t say so in TVA, only that he was worried for Amadeo’s safety:

“He has quite the reputation, your English lord, slamming down his knife on the board in any tavern he chooses. Do you have to consort with common murderers? You have a nonpareil here when it comes to those who take life.”

@auburnandamberangel, @sheepskeleton@amadeo-child-of-the-renaissance@faceofabotticelliangel, @annabellioncourt@vraik, and @anton-mordrid would all probably have better answers for this… anyone is invited to reblog/comment and add their thoughts.

The main difference I see is that Marius gave Amadeo the autonomy and independence to make his own choices in this regard, and Amadeo was more rebelling against Marius in his fling w/ Lord Harlech than furthering his sexcapades education. It turned out that LH was bonkers, got all weird and overly possessive and wanted to kidnap Amadeo… it was a bad breakup.

[X, @cloudsinvenice said: I’m thinking Armand when he fights Lord Harlech, personally.]

There’s some debate about why Marius sent Amadeo around for all those sexual escapades and I always read it as part of Marius’ full-rounded education deal that he wanted Amadeo to have; to have experienced all the good things in life that can be humanly experienced, and to show him that physical intimacy doesn’t have to be the horrible experience it was when Amadeo was kept in the brothels. Not necessarily the best cure for a sexually abused child/teenager but Marius was probably thinking of it as exposure therapy:

Exposure therapy is a technique in behavior therapy used to treat anxiety disorders. It involves the exposure of the patient to the feared object or context without any danger, in order to overcome their anxiety and/or distress. Procedurally it is similar to the fear extinction paradigm in rodent work.

But for my younger sibling’s birthday I made @louis-the-beautiful-one some coloring pages featuring their favorites from the Vampire Chronicles series!

We’ve got Louis, Claudia, and Lestat in a family portrait, Armand standing about with the curtains of his stage, and Marius looking so miffed at his quill.

I’d really like to do a couple more, and maybe I will with some of my favorites (NICKI… DAVID… GABRIELLE) but that’s for a later time. I love being the older sibling without a $$$ job so I’m always drawing things. HAHA

Please download and color them for yourself!! Hell, if you want a custom one, hit me up~

//I just want you to know that I absolutely love your humor in your answers to anon asks! The only problem is that I need forewarning since I like this computer and it’s not exactly accustomed to having drinks spit at it.

Awww! You’ve made my day. As for your poor drink-spattered computer… I’ll message you privately (”INCOMING” could be the code word?) before I post responses from now on, lol.

Ok, time to open your mind. I have this ideal vision of Alexander Skarsgard as Marius. I have almost no existing visuals (Tarzan pics are a bit too showy and muscly!) to support this, but I can still imagine it very clearly. I can see him with the long white-blonde hair. I can see drapes of red velvet coming from his shoulders. Alas, I know he’s already played a vampire, but Eric Northman from True Blood couldn’t be much more different to Marius. I hope I’m not alone in being able to see this!

Time to open my mind? It doesn’t need to open too far, he was already a vampire! Idk if he’d be willing to play another vampire when he was one for so long, but Marius is pretty different from what I know of AS’s TB character, maybe he’d do it 😉 Showy and muscly? Marius might have to show some skin sometimes… wouldn’t be terrible if he looked good in his birthday suit ❤

Oh look, a wild Marius and Bianca appear! Messy eaters.

I’ve seen and heard the name “Marius” pronounced different ways. Is it “Mare-us” or “Mary-us”? If it is “Mary-us” the answer is hell yeah Ill marry you boo❤️

Lestat: Marius, look at this.

Marius: “Mah-rius.”

Lestat: What?

Marius: My name– it is pronounced “Mah-rius.” You called me ‘Marry-iss.”

Lestat: What’s the difference?

Marius: One is my name; the other is not.

Lestat: *grumbles* Oh shut up old man.

[^Lee Pace as Thranduil, has a Marius vibe here, at least physically]

I’m not even going there re: you wanting to MARRY him bc he is one of our more insidiously Problematic characters. @anton-mordrid had a good write-up about him here

The pronunciation of his name is up for some debate; it isn’t explicitly defined in canon. Les Mis fandom ppl – who also have a Marius in their canon – tend to pronounce it “MAHR-eeus” with more emphasis on the first syllable.

I’m not a scholar on Roman history, either, so someone who is can chime in on this, bc it would probably be that way. I’ve always pronounced his name “Marry-iss” which I’m sure is totally wrong, but sounds right to me 😛
