Not supposed to be on here, are you under 13? I have to admit I was 11 when I started reading VC, so I don’t judge ppl for being that young. I even wrote my first fanfics then.
@mntyaggrssn said they have the same name on AO3, if you can make an AO3 account and reach out to them. Or reach out to them on anon and give them your wattpad name.
Why are children under the age of 13 not permitted to have an account or upload Content? In the U.S., the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act governs the collection of personal information (which can include things like usernames) from children under 13. Requiring users to be over 13 is the easiest way for us to comply with this law.
ANYWAY, no pressure, Anon. You come to us when and if you’re able/ready ^______^
Buying a book is not about obtaining a possession, but about securing a portal.
Sorry for my absence, everyone :- I had visitors over this past wknd and I was p. much offline for the entire time, I only sneaked on my dash a teensy bit.
#INKTOBERVC rebagelling will resume, you’ll have an avalanche of it, but I’ll try to stagger it somewhat…
no promises. Unfollow me if you don’t want it.
BTW I have a twitter but I’m not really using it too much, if you want to interact with me out there it’s the same as here, @i-want-my-iwtv. I also have @iwantmyiwtv, that’s me, too. Not really sure what to do with the twitter presence altho there are some lovely Russian fans interacting with me so far!
We read in bed because reading is halfway between life and dreaming, our own consciousness in someone else’s mind.
Anna Quindlen, How Reading Changed My Life (via books-n-quotes)
TL:DR; Anon says don’t skip it, you should read it.
I’m of the mindset that there’s something good in all the VC books even if you don’t accept them all as canon, there’s always something worth dragging out into the light and enjoying for what it is as a standalone piece, be it a quote, or good dialogue banter, or whatever floats your boat, and you may miss it if you skip over a whole section… Even if the characters aren’t our faves, there may be something in there that’s worth salvaging. @sanguinivora gave me a new diving suit for this purpose, lol.
ANYWAY so Anon wrote in 4 messages:
1) To your PLROA question: It’s true, in a way 95% of KT could be skipped. Anne Rice told it so boringly, mentioning every detail (every time they ate and what they ate) it did not even have a chance to be interesting as a story (for me it was though also too absurd).
Good to know. I mean, the vampires can’t eat food, maybe this was an attempt to make the replimoids more likeable? That they’re all impressed with the earhtly food and stuff? So her tale was interesting and absurd tho, that’s the impression I’m getting.
2) But still I don’t think that the end of the book will make actually sense if one knows not the facts one hears in KT. You know the outcome, yes, but probably not really why or how it came to be. So my advice is to read that part simply incredible fast, not trying to imagine every single detail.
Sounds like good advice. I’ll be interested to see what info does apply.
3) Otherwise I find it in a way sad that AR steals every secret. In IWTV we know NOTHING of vampires – which makes that book so strong. Then in TVL we hear the tale of the parents, which gave me chills still. But this book goes for me too far.
If I understand you right, you liked that we didn’t know the vampire origins in IWTV, and then in TVL those origins are discussed and you did enjoy that. I agree, it seems like most VC fandom ppl I’ve talked with love VC partly for its take on the vampire origin myth. I BOUGHT IT THEN AND I BUY IT NOW. And AR even leaves the possibility that there are other vampire-like beings that have a different origin story, like the mindless Eurovamps Louis and Claudia find. They doubt that those vampires were created the way they were, but it’s left unexplained.
But this book goes for me too far.
That seems to be shared by other fans, too, that she undermines the facts set up in earlier books, rather than adding to them in a richer way :-
4th message from anon has kind of a big spoiler, so it is under the cut.
4) That all the vampires are separated in the end, takes a LOT of the vampire “magic” and makes so much of the old novels in a way undone. I would never read it a second time and I will also not regard it actually as VC truth.
Yeah I agree with you, one of the things I really loved about the vampire physiology of Ricean vampires was the fact that they were all connected, and to have that severed, it just felt like a huge loss of the vampire “magic” as you put it. Amel could travel around on it and visit other vampires! It was like they really were all one creature in a way.
I would reread PLROA more for those domestic and angsty moments we get of the vampire court, Lestat squabbling with Amel in his head, the L/L fluff, of course. But for the ALIEMS? No thank you, I really hope she moves on to literally anything else… I would even accept a wurwulf/VC crossover at this point, as it would be more grounded in the universe she had previously built.
Hm, I mean, I don’t want to rain on anyone’s parade, I can see where you’re coming from… sometimes I’ll start reading a fic from a new writer and feel like they might not have read very much canon, or they’ve only seen the movie(s), so they don’t really have a take on the characters that meshes well enough with mine, so it makes it a little hard for me to suspend disbelief, but other times, I’m really impressed with their ideas! It’s pretty subjective but I like to be surprised *u*
For specifics, it depends what you’re looking for, which characters, pairings, time period, longfic/one-shots/drabbles, angst, fluff. So many!
I have a huge list of faves. HUGE. But the thing about VC fanfic is that we still have to be sort of careful about sharing it bc of reasons (under the cut).
Also, the danger of recommending any fic runs the same risk of doing those Follow Forever posts, which I don’t do, because I’ve seen ppl who were left out feel hurt and excluded. I like fluff and angst, and I ship L/L so most of my faves are L/L specific, and I also really love one-shots from the IWTV-era and TVL-era, and other “missing scenes” from canon books 3-5 and #current vampire happenings which could take place anywhere from 1986 to now. There are alot of good fics that don’t fall into those rubrics, which are very subjective, so ppl are free to reblog/comment with other stuff.
One of my most fave VC fanfics is an L/L-specific one, it’s incomplete but I recommend it whenever I have the opportunity: Gulfport: A British Petroleum Fanfic (Part One) by hw_campbell_jnr– There are 2 parts and, again, it’s incomplete, but this is devastatingly beautiful long!fic. Hipster modern Lestat and Louis, Lestat going by a pseudonym, politics woven in, it’s just too good. It annoys me how good it is. I am annoyed. I would be less annoyed if it were COMPLETED.
Since I’m on the GULFPORT (in caps bc I am just that passionate about it) subject I’ll elaborate a little. Not a lot happens plot-wise, but this is the kind of angst and fluff I really love. It offers an insight into their characters that hits me just right, I haven’t seen anything quite like it. It plays forwards and backwards in the established timeline, Lestat makes these strong statements and then immediately backtracks and scratches them out, harshly, it’s more of a train of thought sometimes than a narrative, it sprinkles in some headcanons, a peek into L/L email exchanges, and a little of Lestat’s recovery from his coma which just… really hurt my heart, in such a good way. It basically killed my muse for any creative fanworks for months after I first read it, bc I felt like, Why bother, if this exists? BC we always need more fanworks, we’re insatiable, fanworks are the lifeblood of a fandom, and even the person who wrote GULFPORT enjoys other’s fresh fanworks 😉
ANYWAY. We all know that there is fic in secret places and I don’t broadcast those places on my blog, in case certain ppl change their mind about their stance on it. However! Archive of Our Own (aka AO3) has a mission statement about protecting fanworks from copyright infringement arguments, so I feel pretty safe recc’ing stuff that’s on there (in no special order):
Retail Therapy by Rebness (@wicked-felina) – what I love about this, among other things, is that it really is retail therapy for Lestat without that needing to be explained, and has a sweet ending ❤
The Hostile Takeover by StellaMachiavelli (@stellamachiavelliici) – is a legendary fic. “Lestat de Lioncourt is a high-flying businessman out for revenge on ruthless boss Santino, with the help of his best friend David Talbot. There’s just one complication: on Santino’s side is Lestat’s ex, Louis de Pointe du Lac.”
Childhood memory– a harsh lesson is learned (not the official title) @devilsfool – not L/L but I always have to rec it, a response to an Ask, a first kiss, child!Lestat.
In short, Anne Rice had waged war on VC fanfic in the mid-90s, sic’ing her lawyers on many fanfic writers, eventually breaking apart fanfic sites (“speculative fiction” or “spec” archives/communities) and driving many of these writers to stop writing altogether or do so in a more underground way ;A;
Currently, she’s had conflicting stances on fanfic, but hasn’t made outright war at nearly that level. I try not to tag her in discussions of it, basically, I don’t try to provoke her by making our caches of VC fanfic known. Especially on Facebook, where she’s very active and might see it. She posted this on her FB in 2014 (I think):
Following through the comments on my post, there is the idea that “le Russe” is an epithet, that it’s not what Armand goes by, but something Rhoshamandes calls him. It’s only mentioned once in the book, IIRC, by Rhosh. I’d believe that.
Anne APPARENTLY made up “le Russe” in PL. Which I had totally forgotten until I was reminded a little while ago. As far as obviously made up surnames go it’s even worse than de Romanus lol. ETA: I need to do a closeread before I speak lol, it sounds like that’s an epithet rather than a name.
SO LIKE I MEAN, the only part (to my recollection? plz correct me???) where it mentions “Armand Le Russe” is in a Rhosh chapter and that guy is such a salty fuckin tool and I got the impression that he was calling Armand that to be petty and sarcastic? Cause then she started listing the vampires at the end of the books and she still just refers to him as “Armand” without a last name.
“Only the clever ones like Gregory Duff Collingsworth and Armand Le Russe–who could thrive right in the midst of mortals–were undisturbed by the shrinking of the planet.”
YEP that’s what @laurasking pointed out to me too. That’s totally plausible. Also since Rhosh’s experience with Armand relates to coven era BS in Paris (idk if I’m even remembering this correctly but isn’t he pissed that allessandra ++ were forced into the covens) it might possibly be a thing left over from that era as well??
laurasking said: Well, Rhoshamandes calls him that, but no one else.
moral-cipher said: Laurasking – ohhh i forgot that. So it’s probably an epithet, possibly left over from the Bad Old Days. That makes a lot more sense. Thanks!
laurasking said: I thought fanon was that he assumed de Romanus.
@i-want-my-iwtv: ^Re: de Romanus, I assumed that was the name Armand used when he was with Marius, but after he was taken by the Children of Darkness, they changed his first name and I would assume he never used “de Romanus” again, either ;A;
(Hey ppl, comment/reblog on your PLROA progress on this post so @angelicasylum doesn’t have to wait so long for meeee to have smne to talk about it with)
