Previously appearing OCs are pleased to witness Lestat amusing himself – and everyone else. Also, Lestat is quite proficient in all uses of modern technology, thank you very much.

THIS. WAS. SO. YUMMY.

The Sexting Caper – Gairid – Vampire Chronicles

merciful-death:

ooc; An update on the state of things from Anne’s Facebook. I’m excited to hear that Universal seems to actually be moving forward.

oh yeah? A script for the first movie is being wrITTEN NOW? WELL I WILL BELIEVES IT WHEN I SEES THE FRICKIN’ IRIDESCENT BLUE-GRAY-VIOLET EYES STARING OUT AT ME FROM THE TRAILER OF THIS ALLEGED FILM.

Which of the major VC character would you say are the most intelligent? I mean, for all the love I have for him, I’d place Lestat on the smart side of average at best. What do you think? What of the others? Your opinion is of paramount importance to me lol

Well my opinion should be of paramount importance to you bc I am in fact highly intelligent. Like off-the-scale. SO SMART.

image

There are different kinds of intelligence, tho. I couldn’t assign IQ numbers, bc those might fluctuate over time, and are not the only/best way to define the nebulous concept that is “intelligence.” So I can’t say which are the most intelligent, but I can describe their types of intelligence. I’ll do my faves first and the rest under a cut like noone is gonna read all this ffs!

Lestat- His experience as a hunter in life and as a vampire made him flexible, resourceful, and inventive/impulsive. His theatre experience gave him improvisational skills, which are useful in negotiation, courtship, and life-of-the-partyness. So I don’t think I can agree with you that that places him “on the smart side of average,” since I’m not considering his intelligence as a notch on a numerical scale. But I’m glad you still love him, even if you rate his intelligence that way! That’s totes fine.

Louis- His love of books is a love of learning and storytelling, a seeking of deeper meanings, an enjoyment of the imagination, so I would say his intelligence lies in his introspective nature. This helps with diplomacy, trying to talk sense into Lestat and others. He’s empathetic, can read people’s poker faces, and hence is an excellent risk-taker in gambling.

Claudia- A planner, she is the best at the old “Revenge is a dish best served cold.” She can plan moves ahead of time, even better than Louis can. She is emotionally manipulative, able to instigate fights between her parents with very little effort on her part.

Hit the jump for more.

David- As the Head of the Talamasca (I forget his exact title okay this is good enough), he must have risen through the ranks for a reason. His unflappability under pressure, his own Mind Gifts even before his turning, and the wisdom and sense of peace that life experience brings, these are all good reasons. He’s one of the only creatures Lestat really listens to, one of the only ones Lestat actually will modify his behavior around, with just a subtle directive. David has brought many talented people into the Order, and trained them for fieldwork. He’s generous to a fault.

Armand- Part of why he disliked Claudia could be subconscious, in that he might have seen some of himself in her (and therefore found another reason for competition with her). He has all her skills and more, with his powerful Mind Gift, he can weave fantastic illusions in the minds of others. But it takes alot of energy to do so. He devours knowledge, seeking the keys to satisfaction, chasing a state of peace that he can never seem to maintain for very long by himself.

Daniel- Like Louis, he is a lover of the written word, making him empathetic to others. As an interviewer, he knew how to “ask the right questions” to get his subjects to open up and reveal more than they might have intended. He also has a great level of patience, which is an enormous virtue in arguments; he can generally keep his cool much longer than his opponent, able to focus on the debate and not resort to cheap personal attacks.

Marius- Obviously a skilled artist, and appreciator of art in humankind and in nature, it has led him to attain a state of peace for the most part. Art as a form of self-expression, he can relieve stress and anxiety by painting another mural or perusing a gallery. This peacefulness makes him a trustworthy mentor to many. In later canon this has faltered somewhat, we can see that he’s shaken by things, he is vulnerable, but like a cat, seems to always land on his feet!

Jesse- A lover of studying and a bold explorer, she had long ago cast aside societal ideals of settling down and making babies. She had a thirst for knowledge and adventure and she pursued both. She had balls in a time when women were congratulated for having them ;]

Gabrielle- Also a bold adventurer, someone with a strong sense of ethics, and decisive, able to hear an argument and cut through all the bullshit right to the heart of the matter.

Nicolas- Mad? Maybe. But also fiercely devoted to the violin. Having that much commitment to the study of an instrument demonstrates a passionate soul. The fact that he was actually talented at it and could “bring the house down” meant that the tireless practicing paid off. He had found the thing that made him happy (as happy as he was capable of being) and found the person he was most happy with (Lestat) and that’s an enormous accomplishment, both are things that some people never achieve in life.

Akasha- Mad? YES. And yet, one could also say she was a hardcore SJW feminist, blind to anything other than the information that would support her own ideas and agenda. At least she did her homework.

Maharet and Mekare- Were the most powerful witches of their time; they had to memorize spells, incantations, they had to learn diplomacy with spirits. Think of the volumes of material they must have had to keep in mind! After turning, Maharet kept records of their family tree, an enormous task, but it was well worth it in the interest of feeling like she still belonged to something larger than herself, which brought her peace. She helped her family when possible, financially or otherwise. Great empathy there.

Interview with the Vampire + The Onion headlines

Seeing maledictum10’s submit made me feel old… so old.

fairytalesgoneawry submitted:

So…. in 1996 I was in middle school and had a friend over and my dad “caught” us watching IWTV in my room – of course it was the version that was (heavily) edited for TV but that didn’t occur to him so he actually took the TV out of my room so that we couldn’t watch anything else. Well I wanted to know how the damn movie ended so I convinced my mother to let me rent (on VHS, btw) the original movie (which was way more graphic than the version we had been watching).

Then, at the middle school I was attended, they let you read any book you wanted for the reading requirement as long as you read a certain number of pages per day. So I’m in the library that was attached to the school and – whoa – IWTV! So I picked that book to read for my middle school reading requirement. And when I  was done with that I asked my mom to buy for me TVL… My mom was *thrilled* because I had been homeschooled for a few years and even though I whizzed through math text books, I *hated* reading and always did the bare minimum. My father was less thrilled and threw my copy of TVL in the trash several times.

So, my mother, bless her heart, calls up a local book store and asks them to put one of every Anne Rice book on hold for her – because she thinks Anne Rice ONLY wrote The Vampire Chronicles. Apparently without really looking at what she was buying, she has the book store put all the books on hold into a bag and ring them up….. and THAT is how my mother accidentally bought me smut when I was in middle school.

I’d finished all the vampire chronicles that were out in time for TVA which came out one week before my 14th birthday in 1998 (I was gifted three copies – I probably should have thought to ask for more than just that book…).

Seeing phrases like “I was sucked into the VC obsession hellhole when I was 14” and “Once I finished TotBT on January 22, 2012” in the same sentence make me feel positively ancient! Buuuut I couldn’t be happier, of course, that there are so many new and young fans. We can always use the fresh blood.  😉

^Yeah, it makes me feel a bit old, too, similarly, I’d read #1-4 by 1994. #5 (Memnoch the Devil) was my first fresh one. But hey, I’ve aged like a fine wine!

^LOUIS OMG RUDE I know it gets cold so quickly but show a little respect!

Well, as you know #I love these kind of stories. We may be old, but I think we got to experience the VC in a unique way. Like you, I was at the age when I could yearn for a new VC book and then get excited asking for it as a birthday present or going to the bookstore to pick it up. I didn’t like the feel of new hardcovers, though. Preferred the paperbacks, as they had a more friendly handfeel and pleasant scent.

I hate to be “that” person, but how do you pronounce: Amadeo, Khayman, Makare, Maharet, and Enkil?

i-want-my-iwtv:

No, that’s not being “that” person at all! What IS being “that” person is being all overly offended at someone else’s pronunciation, so before I answer I’ll just remind y’all that these are fictional characters, there’s no right way to pronounce them, I don’t care if you have a master’s degree in Etymology and/or Linguistics, named your pet/child after them, have a friend with the same name, even if you are the creator of the series, anyone is free to pronounce these names however they want.

Amadeo- “ah-mah-DAY-oh” or “ah-MAD-eeyo,” I sorta use both.

Khayman- “Kay-men”

Mekare- “mee-CARE” or “mek-ARRAY,” personally, I prefer the first option.

Maharet-  “maha-RET” (emphasis on the last syllable like “Margaret”), or “MAH-harret” (emphasis on the first syllable), or “muh-HAH-ret” (emphasis on the second syllable). Personally, I prefer the last option.

(redhairedtwin may disagree with me on the twins, she can add her two cents if she wants to do so.)

BONUS… hit the jump.

Ah! godsize reminded me that I forgot Enkil! So sorries!

Enkil- “en-KILL” or “ON-keel”

Marius- “MAH-reeyus” or “MARE-eeyus,” I tend to prefer the second option.

Lestat- Despite AR’s explicit instructions that it be pronounced “Less-DOT” with emphasis on the second syllable, I can’t do that, it sounds too clunky for me. I think it’s more like “Less-TAT,” second syllable like “cat,” or “Less-STAH,” as in “star” without the “r.“ I prefer the “cat” version. More discussion on his name here.

Louis- “Loo-WEE.” takemetocoffin-or-losemeforever helpfully recorded the pronunciation of his name in full.

@pour-some-aspartame-on-me submitted:

I was sucked into the VC obsession hellhole when I was 14. I had read Dracula and proclaimed it as one of my favourite books before I had even finished it. When I told my dad this, he recommended the strange and mystical books I had seen my parents reading as I grew up, “The Vampire Chronicles.” I could barely put IWTV down once I started it. I finished it in a week, which was the fastest I had ever read a book of that size before. My parents had the first four books as a boxset, and I thought those were the only ones in the series. Once I finished TotBT on January 22, 2012, I was really sad, and on the 24 I heard of TVA. I quickly found out there were actually 10 books. I’m still a little mad that my parents neglected to tell me because they knew there were more than four books, and didn’t tell me.

Also, I adore your blog! <3 It was what finally pushed me to stop staring at the VC books on my shelf and actually pick them up and order some more. So thank you and stay awesome! :)

Aw thank u so much! ♥u♥

Please keep us posted on your thoughts as u progress, altho we all love these stories, we can never quite recapture the thoughts and feels we had when we first read them. And I’m telling you, you will probably enjoy my crazy more when you know the series better.

Note also: I’m tagging this #Free VC Advertising, which is my new tag for posts in which ppl tell me they’re reading/buying the VC bc they were inspired to do so by my blog. This will help protect the blog in the event that *someone* wants to take it down (on the grounds that it’s detrimental to the sales of the VC).

If people are inspired by this blog enough to read/buy the books, well, then I’d say it’s doing the exact opposite, it’s PROMOTING the series!
