Here is a list of found footage tapes (from movies or posted on youtube) and creepy videos. Not all of these are real, of course.
- In the Woods: Last footage of a guy walking in the woods. He begins to hear growling sounds. These sounds seem like they are from a human-animal hybrid in pain. At the end something pops out of the bushes, and he runs away.
- No Thorough Road: Video of a group of boys driving around, when odd things begin to occur. Horrifying things that they first treat as a joke but then begin to get genuinely scared about.
- Indonesian Ghost Tuyul: Footage of a ghost that can only be seen by one person at a time. Two dudes are playing the guitar when and do not sense the tuyul lurking around them.
- Paris Catacombs: Found footage of a guy who was lost in the never ending halls of the Paris catacombs. Some suspect that something else was down there with him.
- Ghost of Henry VII: Found on a security tape is the ghost of Henry VII in Hampton Court. You can make out his apparition floating through the doors.
- V.H.S: A horror film in a found footage style video. They are terrifying and is something I recommend to watch in the dark at 12 a.m
- Slenderman: An enormous stick like figure found climbing the buildings in Russia. Many link it to the urban legend of slender man.
- Imaginary Friends: A father decides to play hide and seek with his daughter, but it seems like there’s a third identified player involved.
- The Rake: Some humanoid creature is found climbing around the roof of a man. Needless to say he is extremely creeped out.
- Japanese Haunted Hospital: Part of a Japanese t.v show, in a “found footage” style of the spirits that lurk around a long dead abandoned hospital
The horror doesn’t stop here. Check out this masterpost of more creepy lists and short films.
horror films for people who don’t like horror films
i’ve been asked this a lot: what horror movies would you recommend to people who try to stay away from the genre in general, for whatever reason? some people don’t enjoy being scared, some people find horror too unrealistic and outlandish, and some people don’t enjoy the repetitive tropes that are admittedly often present in horror films.
that being said, when i do give people recommendations for horror movies to dip their toe into, they’re often the same ones, or very similar ones. so i’ve gathered them here today, in case my horror loving followers have any friends who ask them the same questions, but aren’t sure of how to answer.
Q: Why don’t you like horror?
A: “I don’t like jumpscares.”

Gothic romance?
Well, let’s see. I guess it all depends on what you mean by Gothic Romance. A long time ago the term Romance was used to mean anything emotional, dramatic, or exaggerated. And most Gothic fiction fits under this category but I’ll answer under the assumption that you mean the modern definition, as in Gothic love stories.
Here we go…
Edward Scissorhands. Probably the saddest but most obvious one to list with beautiful and haunting music by Danny Elfman.
Crimson Peak. This one is practically a love letter to Gothic
literature of the late nineteenth century and practically personifies
Gothic.Faust. The silent version by F. W. Murnau. This version beautifully follows Goethe’s Faust Parts 1 and 2 and ends with the bitter-sweet ascension of Faust and Gretchen to Heaven, Faust’s love saving him from damnation.
Tim Burton’s The Corpse Bride. Animated with beautiful music by Danny Elfman this film is today strangely under-rated whereas when it first came out people seemed to think it would be the next Nightmare before Christmas.
The Company of Wolves . This one is an odd film. Using werewolves as a metaphor for sex, sexuality, and even puberty the film tells several classic werewolf legends all within the mind of a sleeping pubescent girl (having her first period). In the dream Granny (Angela Lansbury) tells terrible werewolf stories to Rosaleen (Little Red Riding Hood) to warn of the dangers of men but in the end Rosaleen shows sympathy to a werewolf huntsman and it’s implied she becomes one as well. This is from director Neil Jordan (Interview with the vampire) and can work on it’s own (without understanding of the metaphors) as a good, yet trippy early 1980s werewolf movie.
The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. Nineteen forties novel, movie, and 1960s TV series. This is a sweet story of a self-sufficient young widow (in the Victorian era) who ends up in a very peculiar and loving relationship with the ghost of a cantankerous old sea captain. It’s more empowering than anything you’ll ever find in Twilight.
She Creature (2001 film. Not to be confused with the 1950s film of the same name. It has a very different plot. Also sometimes titled She-Creature: Mermaid Tales). This film deals with some carnival people trying to take a captured mermaid back to America with them but the mermaid is more of a predator than they realize and she starts to kill off the men who hold her prisoner, only showing sympathy to the one female on board, whom she seems to have developed feelings toward.
Dracula (1979 film). I like this one because the Mina character (called Lucy in the film) is actually a very strong and aggressive character. You can even argue that she is the one who seduces Dracula first. She also speaks her mind when she disagrees with his actions. And it intrigues and delights him.
Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The love story might be purely created for the film but I still like it. Even if they did take some odd liberties about how Dracula became a vampire.
Dark Prince: The True Story of Dracula. Surprisingly respectful to history while still implying Dracula becomes the vampire, the dynamic between Vlad and Lydia is sweet.
Love at First Bite. This one is a romantic comedy but I have a soft spot for it. It even gives Dracula a happy ending.
The Vampire lovers. If you want a little bit of Lesbian romance than The vampire lovers might be for you, it’s an adaptation of Carmilla with one of the main character’s names changed but other than that it follows the novel better than some other adaptions and has a great ambiance and atmosphere.
Interview with the vampire. If you can’t tell that Lestat is in love with Louis than you have no eye for subtlety. Not strictly a romance but you can tell there is love between the main characters.
The Bride. Not to be confused with The Bride of Frankenstein this movie is from 1985 and is a very modern (though set in the past) exploration on the Bride of Frankenstein idea. It also gives The Creature a happy ending and I’m kind of a sucker for hopeful outcomes.
Beauty and the Beast. Nearly all versions of Beauty and the Beast (when done well) are Gothic romances. Though if you want something a little darker than Disney than I would suggest the 1940s version or the surreal 2014 French version (now available on DVD in the US.) The 2014 French version has beautiful visuals but the chemistry between the leads is a little weak. It also gives a very intriguing new backstory for The Beast.
Sleepy Hollow. The romance between Ichabod and Katrina is simple yet beautiful. (1999 movie. Not the TV series.)
Warm Bodies. May people call this the zombie equivalent to Twilight but R has a lot more character depth and development than Edward ever had. Also it’s the only Zombie apocalypse movie to have a happy ending. And though the metaphors are a bit ham handed I think it’s sweet. Love and feeling is what makes you alive.
Let the Right One In. Though the relationship is platonic the protagonist’s bond is deep and sweet. And if you want a little violence in your romantic movie night wait until you get to the “bullies at the pool” scene. You’ll get something delightfully terrible.
Phantom of the Opera (2004 musical / opera version)
Disney’s Hunchback of Notredame. I say the Disney version because the romantic aspect of the original is purely in the emotional nature of the story. Any “Love story” aspect was purely one sided but in the Disney version you get to see reciprocated and unappreciated love. Also, who doesn’t love “Hell Fire”?
Dorian Gray (2009 version). Though this film deviates from it’s source
material it does capture the heart and feel of the original story and
also features a sort of quasi-redmption near the end, out of love. The Canterville Ghost (1996). The love story in this is a bit thin but it is there between Virginia and the young lord next door.
Gothic only in it’s atmosphere, nearly any version of Les Miserables.
There are a lot more but that’s what I thought of off the top of my head.
Bonus Fantasy suggestions: Maleficent (though it’s more of a maternal love), Splash, and Date with a Angel.
For Gothic Romance TV shows: She-Wolf of London, Dark Shadows (original and 1990s version), and Forever Knight, and Lucifer.
For Gothic Romance novels try Carmilla, The Dracula Tape (retelling of Dracula by Dracula, himself) by Fred Saberhagen, Goethe’s Faust parts 1 and 2 (Closet Drama), Warm Bodies, Les Miserables by Victor Hugo, Beauty and The Beast (original French novel, not the fairy tale version), and The Ghost and Mrs. Muir by R. A. Dick (Pen name of Josephine Lesley).
TV mini-series: Jekyll. A direct sequel to the original story by Steven Moffat and it shows just what happens when Hyde develops feelings toward his alterego’s family.
And the 2004 Hallmark mini-series of Frankenstein starring Luke Goss as The Creature. It’s very faithful the novel and has good chemistry between Viktor and Elizabeth.
Plays: Frank Wildhorn’s Dracula The musical. Particularly the German production. Dracula das Musical and the Japanese version where Wao Yoka plays the best Dracula ever done by a woman you are likely to come across.
The up coming movie The Shape of Water looks very good too.
Have you seen Castlevania on netflix? If not, 10/10 would recommend ♡♡♡
I have not, but some of the fanart (here’s one) looks very VC to me! It’s on netflix?? High rating, I’ll give it a try! I like this style alot.

I still want a VC videogame and/or animated series/feature film… btw…fyi…

[^X by on Gachiko @gatch_new on twitter, I think]
^The pixellation here makes this look like a video game. Could u imagine a VC videogame??! I’m visualizing a scenario like Super Smash Bros. w/ Lestat vs. Armand… or Louis & Claudia playing on a team vs.Vagabond European Vampire No. 73….
Also, lots of creative murders like the Fire Gift and the Explodey-Heart-Gift on mortals.

I absolutely love your blog! I’ve gone through all the VC cannon and so many of the wonderful fanworks, but now I’m having withdrawals! Is it strange that my solution is to watch Rise of the Guardians? I mean, Jack Frost IS a cheeky undead optimist who’s trying to find his purpose in the world :P My real question is, are there any Lestatesque/VC-esque books or movies you’d recommend? I agree that OLLA and What We Do in the Shadows are fantastic >:D
Merci beaucoup, glad you like this thing! You want more?

You do, I see >:}
I’d agree w/ you about Jack Frost, he’s forced into his immortal status by accident, too, and he’s orphaned and has to figure out what to do w/ himself, too. Jack and Lestat are definitely both
cheeky undead optimists! And yes, OLLA and What We Do in the Shadows are fantastic, that’s for sure! Those movies were very much the VC movie we had been waiting for, with different facets of VC-adjacentness. OLLA more for the aesthetic and WWDITS more for the comedy.
I don’t think that any ONE movie or book (or book series) has all the ingredients that make up that unique VC flavor but there are many that are adjacent. I knew this was going to end up being a masterpost, that’s why it took so long. Also I restrained myself from any Tom Cruise movies. He should have his own masterpost ;D
*cracks knuckles* Okayyy… SO,
VC-Adjacent is more doable than Lestatuesque, bc everyone’s headcanon of Lestat varies and we all know how attached I am to Tom Cruise So I’ll give you one Lestatuesque rec and the rest are VC-Adjacent.
Lestatuesque:
Blade Runner (1982) – this movie is mentioned in canon (QOTD). AR had wanted to cast Rutger Hauer as Lestat. But he was too old when they finally got IWTV into production D: so watch this and see her vision for Lestat.
Over and over [Armand] watched Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, fascinated by Rutger Hauer, the powerfully built actor who, as the leader of the rebel androids, confronts his human maker, kisses him, and then crushes his skull. It would bring a slow and almost impish laugh from Armand, the bones cracking, the look in Hauer’s ice-cold blue eye.
“That’s your friend, Lestat, there,” Armand whispered once to Daniel. “Lestat would have the… how do you say?… guts?… to do that!”
In no particular order*
(and @annabellioncourt helped me out here, so wherever there’s an *, those are her recs that I agreed with)(and there are other movies I love obviously, but I tried to limit this list to VC-Adjacent only; and I couldn’t think of any of my fave books that come close enough to fit in here).
Vampire movies:
- *Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992) – Well this goes w/o saying, and it also shared movie!IWTV’s Michele Burke as head of the makeup dept ;D
- The Lost Boys (1987) – @skeletalroses is kind of my authority on this one, and >>>this movie is cited as a major inspiration for WWDITS.<<<
- What We Do in the Shadows (2014)- Including it on here bc of reasons, this is a very classy documentary of several vampires flatting together in New Zealand as a big coven ball approaches.
- Only Lovers Left Alive (2013) – Including it on here bc of reasons, this is a very classy film of several vampires visiting together in Detroit, Michigan, and Tangiers, Morocco, as the world is slowly taken over by the “zombies” (not actual ones, metaphoric ones). And there are alot of parallels between the married couple and
ClaudiaAva, who is thirsty all the time and above the law bc of course she is. - Shadow of the Vampire (2000) – It’s a behind-the-scenes fanfic of the filming of the legendary Nosferatu! Mostly horror w/ a dash of comedy. Bonus: Eddie Izzard.
- Dracula: Dead and Loving It (1995) – Yeah I love Leslie Nielsen, fight me. It’s a Dracula parody. This will never not be funny.
- Jennifer’s Body (2009) – well she’s not really a vampire but she eats ppl, so close enough. I love the dynamic between Jennifer and her best friend, how you’re not sure whether Jennifer wants to bring her into this, or just terrify her, but there is something kind of Akasha-esque about this creature.
- Let the Right One In (2008) – the original is better than the US remake (Let Me In, 2010) but they’re both worth watching. Child vampire! Choosing a new BFF! She has to respect the Being Invited In Rule, tho.
- The Little Vampire (2000) – a cuter child vampire, w/o much of the angst of being a child vampire, overall super cute and I had to include this bc of Jack Frost.
Other Horror movies/shows:
- *Crimson Peak (2015) – @annabellioncourt says: “would be a fair addition because of the atmosphere of it as well as its campy factor”
- Hannibal (2013-2015) – the TV series bc #murder husbands, like c’mon. One pushing the other into being more murdery and the other resisting it. @cloudsinvenice informed us that “Bryan Fuller was a huge IWTV fan growing up – there’s a Nerdist podcast in which he describes how, at the age of 13, he phoned Anne Rice because he wanted to work on the IWTV screenplay. The story is a gem and starts about 32 minutes in, but the whole thing is really great.”
- The Walking Dead (2010-current) – my new drug, group dynamics, fighting for supremacy, survival, romance, killing!
- Sweeney Todd (2007) – It’s pretty goth, it has some comedy, it has murder, it has ppl pining for each other. Also, a musical. My fave is the whole By the Sea song sequence bc Helena is trying so hard!
- The Witches of Eastwick (1987) – Jack Nicholson is the devil and wants to make his own harem of 3 powerful witches what could possibly go wrong? There is a hilariously awful scene in a church. Jack approaches Lestatuesque levels of charm as he courts these women, and then there’s supernatural stuff going on.
- The Addams Family (1991) – Gomez and Morticia have the kind of ship Lestat would kill for. He would probably dig their aesthetic to some extent, too. Also murderous kids, who are encouraged to be murderous. ONE HAPPY FAMILY.
- Black Swan (2010) – something about this, maybe the aesthetic, feels very Theatre Des Vampires.
- Beetlejuice (1988) – Alec Baldwin! Looked like this once upon a time! But mostly, ppl dealing with being dead and not having a very helpful ghost w/ the most trying to help them. When it works for him.
- Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) – campy, musical, murdery, I still don’t really know what it all really means but it’s fun. Dr. F can be compared to Lestat, in that he’s lusty, charming, glamorous, materialistic, bossy as hell, has a real mean streak, tries to make the perfect lover for himself and fails at it over and over… an essay could be written comparing them. @laurasking is my authority on RHPS.
Other movies/shows:
- Phenomenon (1996) – Telekinesis and someone dealing w/ acquiring it, and how his community treats him bc of it. THIS IS CUTE so like, yeah, much further away, I almost didn’t include it. Gonna lose my reputation over this rec OH WELL it’s your fault, Anon, bc Jack Frost.
Anime – recc’d by my best friend:
- Vampire Princess Miyu – “similar atmosphere"
- Witch Hunter Robin – “quite gothic”
- Otogizoushi – “very atmospheric"
Annbellioncourt’s Recs bc she is classier than me:
- Byzantium (2012) – Neil Jordan’s first vampire movie since IWTV
- Wolfman (2010) – “its cheesey, but its atmospheric, spooky, and bloody”
- The Hunger (1983) – “is one I always suggest to people wanting more”
- The Bloody Chamber And Other Stories – Angela Carter
- Carmilla – Bunch of adaptations of this.
- A Taste of Blood Wine –
Freda Warrinton
- Blood Opera Sequence –
Tanith Lee
-
Historian – Elizabeth Kostova
- Fevre Dream (yes its spelled fevre) by George R. R. Martin (yes, its THAT Martin, and his take on vampires is Very Good.)
- Sunshine by Robin McKinley
- The Delicate Dependency by Michael Talbot
- The Hunger by Whitley Scriber
Voice of Louis – or, “I’ve had to listen to that, for centuries.”
@annabellioncourt had cited the following as similar to Louis’ voice in IWTV:
- “Oscar Wilde’s era of the very late 19th century, which is what most people think of today when they think “Victorian writing.”
“Similar in voice (though not subject) would also be:
- Matthew Arnold (read some of his essays, and tell me that’s not how Louis talks),
- Wilkie Collins
- Henry James

FebruaryMarch Film ReviewsDay 24: The Hunger
I’ve reviewed a lot of queer female vampire seduces innocent female mortal movies in this series. What makes The Hunger better than all the rest? David fucking Bowie.
If you only care about the queer lady aspects of these reviews, please skip this paragraph because I need to talk about the immortal space traveling lizard person that is David Bowie. David Bowie is great in this. He plays Catherine Deneuve’s mortal lover who is kept young through her blood but his time runs out and he starts rapidly aging in the first act. I’m really impressed with his performance here. Bowie really made me feel this sort of panic of not only his sudden lack of desirability to the woman who he loves who also sustains him but increasingly his sense of impending doom. I give him major props because playing a man confronting aging is a reach for David Bowie who doesn’t age as us mere mortal earthlings do. Bowie gave a really affecting, chilling and emotional performance that’s the best I’ve seen from him. I’m also impressed how he managed to tone down his whole Bowie-ness and not steal the show from Deneuve too much or clash with the tone of the movie.
So after Bowie starts to age, he visits Dr. Susan Sarandon who’s a dermatologist who he hopes can help him. She cannot and Bowie eventually ages so much that he becomes little more than a skeleton though still conscious. One of the creepiest scenes in the movie comes when Catherine Deneuve places him in a coffin in a room full of all her other lovers who have had the same fate. That’s a great addition to the vampire myth and really scary. The idea of being conscious but unable to move or speak is terrifying and it’s made worse by the fact that you’re also stuck in a coffin. For the lovers of Catherine Deneuve’s character Miriam, the last memory they have of her is betrayal.
Once David Bowie’s become not a valid prospect, Miriam sets her sights on Susan Sarandon and uses her vampire seduction powers to enthral her. This plot line is pretty similar to every other queer vampire movie I’ve reviewed. The difference is the ending. Unless most of the innocent mortals, Susan Sarandon does not turn to the dark side of immortality, blood drinking and scissoring but instead fights back against Miriam and what she represents. Ultimately though, the victory belongs to David Bowie skeleton who leads Miriam’s other past lovers in a skele-uprising and ultimately kills Miriam.
This movie is fucking great. It’s got vampires, lesbians and David Bowie. It’s atmospheric and creepy and overall fucking brilliant. The last scene is a bit disappointing because there’s a lame bit of sequel bait but I can live with that because the film overall is so damn quality. Go watch it.
One of my favorite vampires. I’m not joking.
(The movie is SO GOOD as long as you ignore the last 15-20 minutes.)
Hmm, well I’ve just watched Only Lovers Left Alive for the 63247689th time, so anything with vampires/supernatural themes would be nice. I’m also kind of into foreign films at the moment. Any ideas?
Oooh! Well let’s see..
What We Do In The Shadows = Great Film, it’s a mockumentary film on Vampires, simply lovely and very good yes.
Bram Stokers Dracula ‘Francis Coppola’s’ = Simply one of the best, a classic.
The Taking Of Deborah Logan = It’s a very good supernatural/horror film, very simple and I quite enjoyed it actually.
Dumplings = VERY good foreign horror film, one of my grandest favorites.
Sick Nurses = Another very very good foreign horror film, another fave.
I Saw The Devil = It’s a lovely foreign horror film as well, right up my alley.
The Hunt = Another good foreign.
American Horror Story = I quite enjoy it..but Coven wasn’t so good.
Twin Peaks = Old, but another classic.
The X Files = Classic, totally.
I do hope I helped a bit dear, these are just some amongst a lot that’s out there but these are some of my most well liked.
