Ok I need to ask what is probably the stupidest question ever and I’m sorry, I’m new (I’m talking 50 pages into the first book new)! So, in IWTV Louis lost Paul. But in the film he lost his wife. To my knowledge, Anne Rice wrote the script for the film so what I wanted to know is if that means any small details that weren’t included in the book, such as this one, are considered canon for both book and movie!verse? That Louis was actually married at one point all?

Wow, I have so many thoughts on this. There are spoilers there, but you might be interested in my post about Louis’s rings, and in the jewelry tag.

Not a stupid question. The short answer is No, the VC fandom is all pretty much in agreement that Louis was never married. Or that he had much of a romantic attachment to any woman in IWTV aside from Claudia and a certain sister of the owner of a neighboring plantation.

In terms of whether any other big or small discrepancies between the movie!IWTV and book!IWTV are considered canon? Ummm… I don’t know. That would be up to each person’s own headcanon, which I describe below.

I think alot of the film’s dialogue has been added to our collective canon, since, as you correctly put it, AR did write it! But I can’t think of any specific examples… most of that was revised dialogue from the book and we all tend to remember the movie quote over the book quote. It would be a huge project to try to pick them all out.

—> Now, we all have what we call “headcanons“ and that means, whatever you believe to be canon based on:

  • your own reading of the books and watching the movie(s)
  • reading fanfic on AO3 (or elsewhere)
  • reading RPs here
  • meta posts like this one
  • Whatever you want!

It’s just that you might not find anyone to agree with your headcanon that Claudia and Louis have been hiding out in Amsterdam knitting blankets with Eric, or whatever ;]

In the movie version of IWTV, they (Anne Rice and Neil Jordan worked together) changed a few things from the book, maybe partly to keep it to a 2 hour runtime (I think it was uncommon to have movies over 2 hours in the early ’90s) and partly to open up the story to a wider audience. That’s my explanation for the casting of Antonio Banderas as Armand in my Defending Antonio tag. It’s more upsetting to more people for Louis to have lost a wife in childbirth than a religious zealot of a brother who wanted him to sell the plantation and donate all the money to the church!

PLUS: It actually makes Louis’ transformation into a vampire that much more jarring for his character; he’s married (presumably by the church), had created a new life (the baby), and lost those both at once. That would be devastating to anyone. He immediately turns to drinking and prostitutes, very against the church’s idea of appropriate Good Person behavior. But all that is within the context of being STRAIGHT.

Becoming a vampire not only meant Louis would have to break a big commandment regularly (that pesky Not Killing people one), but it also put him in a confusing relationship with Lestat, a dude, very against the Bible’s idea of appropriateness.

One of Neil Jordan’s previous films dealt with sexuality vs. religion (The Crying Game), so I’m sure he was keenly aware of and even enhanced this crisis of character that Louis would have to undergo, to accept himself as being at least bisexual. That, plus the need to kill people, would mean letting go of those religious principles and societal propriety, because he had to accept that he was no longer human and no longer capable of achieving Goodness. That he had lost his chance for Heaven if it exists.

Of course Lestat told him, “no creature under God are as we are, none so like him as ourselves.” meaning that the religious rules do not apply to vampires.

What are some of your favorite Lestat facts and head canons? (Book and IWTV movie versions)

Are you the same Anon who asked me this a month ago? Why ask me when there are perfectly wonderful Lestat RPers who have full writeups about him, as well? I’ve listed them again at the end of this post.

I have alot of headcanons, and really, these are the seeds for fic/RPs. Headcanons come from canon, author interviews, and fanfic/RP. When they come from fanfic/RP, it’s ideas that fans have developed to answer the gaps left in canon, so they’re kind of preciously guarded until they are written into fic and released that way.

Go to my headcanon accepted tag for headcanons of others that I’ve agreed with ;] but gdi you twisted my arm, so here’s a little peek into my own headcanons… in general strokes. I wouldn’t say favorites. Just ideas that are floating around, begging to be written as fic. They apply to book!Lestat more than movie!Lestat, I guess.

  • Lestat’s birthday is November 7. This is undisputed. He always acts like he couldn’t care less, but if nothing happens that night, he’s wildly offended and can sulk for weeks or more afterwards. So Louis has calendar reminders far in advance so he can arrange an appropriately decadent outing/event/gift of some kind.
  • What do you get the man who has everything and can do anything? Experiences. Everyone in Lestat’s inner circle try to set aside the norm in order to try to give him a unique thrill for his birthday. More often than not they just decide to give him what he wants in the bedroom 😉
  • Lestat knows the date that he was turned and does not celebrate it, but spends it in service to others somehow; being kept busy for that entire night is especially important. He does not like to be in France on that night.
  • Lestat will lapse into paralysis when overcome with emotion, and Louis is the best at drawing him back out of it, with gentle touches and soothing words, or a little blood-dipped kiss, but even he usually just has to wait until Lestat resurfaces on his own. Sometimes Lestat is not himself if he’s “woken up” from it and it’s jarring to watch.
  • Lestat is a believer in Retail Therapy and has bought things immediately after or during an argument (even something as simple as a pair of shades at a gas station) in order to regain control of his emotions. It’s partly because he enjoys the whole exchange he has with the retail person.
  • Lestat had time to know his little sister, and mourned her loss, but didn’t write about it, ever, because it was too painful. She died young, she didn’t have enough hand-eye coordination developed yet to learn to hunt with him, but he wanted that for her so badly, and Gabrielle would have allowed it.
  • Lestat has a recent foot fetish. About his own feet. He can spend hours in a CVS picking out nail colors and he paints his toenails himself. He has 3 shoeboxes full of colors and glitters. Louis dislikes the smell, so Lestat will do it in the courtyard and wait until dry before showing off his artwork.
  • Lestat used to paint Claudia’s little fingernails. He did all sorts of girly activities with her, since it was difficult to find any children her age to befriend her.

Lestat RPers I’ve seen and enjoy watching (in no special order): askthebratprinceeternallyfabulousbratlestatmonsieur-le-rockstarmaestrolestatgorgeous-fiendprincelestatprimusduxasavagegardenindeedlestattheonetruepope, mortcharmant

I’m also tagging viaticumforthemarquise, who, as his mother, has her own headcanons about her son.

And merciful-death, who, as his #1 bitch, has his own headcanons about his maker.

Advice for VC fandom newbies?

advice? ADVICE? Um, wowww… so I usually have strong opinions on ALOT of things, especially VC-related, but this sort of knocked me speechless. For about a minute. Then I wanted to write a thesis on the subject but managed to keep it to this much.

I would suggest that:

  • If you want to RP as one of the characters, or an OC, you really have to read at least the first 3 books. And lots of fanfiction 😉
  • We have awesome fanfiction and AO3 aims to protect it.
  • Did I mention the fanfiction? It fills in the gaps that canon leaves. And it’s also just delishus.
  • The RPers on here are SO fun to follow. Try finding some in the vcdirectory
  • With the canon: you should have an open mind to Crazy Shit Happening

image

  • DUE to the Crazy Shit that Happens later in the series, you are not required to consider it all canon 😉 Alot of people don’t consider books 5-10 to be canon. Or 4-10. Or wherever they want to draw the line. That is FINE.
  • Brace yourself, because Prince Lestat is coming. No, not like that, you filthy thing! ARRIVING. 10/28/14. And, depending on its crackiness, there is going to be a divide between people who consider it to be canon and people who do not, and that is FINE.
  • There’s a divide between People of the Page and People Off the Page, described here.
  • In general the People Off the Page are a low-drama fandom, but we do have our spats, even the illustrious human behind i-want-my-iwtv has experienced a few direct situations, and that’s just life, bc people are people, after all. I’ve accepted my share of the fault in these situations and learned from the experiences. I’m not perfect, nobody is :-

The bottom line is that it’s a fandom that only in the past year or so has really come back to life, we were in hiding bc Anne Rice disapproved of fanfic and waged war on us in the 90’s for it. Now that she seems to have lowered her weapons about that, and even praised some VC fanart – permanentglitter for example! – and with the announcement in March of the new book, well, we’re all coming out into the light and making friends and it’s been wonderful!

I hope you see this, Anon, because we all know there’s a human behind that gray face, too, and I want to personally welcome you and anyone who’s just joining us now… we are a different kind of vampire fandom, that’s for sure.

I just finished Blackwood Farm for the first time. I did not expect to like it as much as I did. However, I can’t say I understand the purpose of Quinn fucking the people he fucked (Mona possibly, but a ghost???) Very blunt here. Apologies.

BF has its moments, for sure!

Re: the ghost sex… um, well… AR certainly attempts to give us freshly Creative Spooky Sexytimes!

tbh I don’t remember that book very well, but I think there was an element of that ghost getting sensual pleasure through Quinn’s sensual pleasure… I don’t want to spoil it for anyone but it is worth a skim at the very least.

What are some of your Vampire Lestat head canons?

I’ve been thinking about this… Can you be more specific? Do you mean from the book TVL, or the character in general? I’ll try to share something at some point, I’ll tag it as iwantmyiwtvheadcanon, so you can search that tag later.

This kinda sums it up, bc in this memeything he’s got all the glamour going on (perfect hair, tough-guy leather (is that Daniel’s jacket??), excessive sparkles, and a dash of profanity), and yet his expression is a little afraid, because he IS vulnerable, he does get hurt. Often. This is the scene where he’s just clawing his way back into the world.
