So I’ve been in the fandom for about…2 weeks. In the middle of the 4th book right now. I’ve heard that the books get worse and stuff and I wonder if I should read all of them or skip some or…?

This is really hard to answer, and I nearly answered it privately, bc I don’t want to sow dissension in the fandom, it’s something ppl love to scream into the void about. But I see you’ve already started drawing some fanart for the fandom, so I want to encourage you to stay with us!

Some fans would tell you that #4 onwards in canon have certain characters being forgotten or mistreated by the author. I would say that there are storylines that are dark to the point that, even with my very high threshold for Crazy Shit, even I’ve had to close whatever one of these later books and just say, “omgz Aaaaaanne, whyyyy… We didn’t want this, nobody wanted this…”

If you’ve come looking for perfect cinnamon rolls, we only have one, Mojo, and he’s a dog 😉

So this depends on your definition of “worse.” They are a pile of dysfunctional hipster trash vampires, and several characters, but specifically the main character in the books, do some exceedingly problematic stuff, and, arguably, he is not condemned by the author in the text. There are fans who choose to disregard all the books from #4 onwards bc of that, and that’s totally fine.

Your headcanon is your own, and you do NOT have to accept all of canon, and you do NOT have to interpret canon the way any other fan interprets it. Don’t let another fan bully you into thinking their interpretation is the Only one.

PERSONALLY, and I know I’m not the only one who feels this way: back in the old days we called the later books #the Vampire Crackicles (spoilers in that tag) and enjoyed them for the silliness, bc there is plenty of humor still in the darkfic. And there are those, like me, who want to read darkfic, too. We want to go there in fiction, and explore what the consequences of even the most atrocious actions are. Can a character who’s committed X crime ever be redeemed? Redemption might not even be about forgiveness from the victim, but the effort of that character to strive to improve. That can be so cathartic for the reader, whether the character achieves it or not, the inspiration can come from the fact that they TRY and FAIL! repeatedly.

I always recommend that ppl give each of the books a chance, even the most cracky have some good stuff in them.

For the most part I think we’re a kinder fandom than others, since we suffered through our own fandom creator waging war on our fanfic and driving us underground for years.

And the fandom is pretty welcoming, but I’ve found it’s better if you know what happens in canon, and can talk about it with other fans, make fanworks about it, or whatev. Even to criticize.

Like any social media, though, your fandom experience is what you make of it, follow the #vampire chronicles tag, find some bloggers you like, and reach out!

Hey bud! I’m working on a Lestat cosplay rn, could you help me with ref pics? I especially need pics of his different shoes/boots and pants 💙

Bonjour~ You came to the right place…

image

…but there aren’t many shots of his shoes or boots, really 😛 Not just to conceal the added heel height! There’s just more action going on in the face area ;]

Here’s a pic of one whole costume, w/ I think, the shoes that went w/ it (thumbnail below, check out the link for larger image).

He wears a bunch of outfits so I’m not sure which one you’re aiming for, but here’s a good post with several of them.

image

^Blurry combo gif is blurry but you can see his pants are generally just dark blue or black, to let the top half of his outfit be big and flashy. Tight pants would probably be best. Middle gif shows tight velvet leggings and knee high boots w/ what looks like a 2 inch heel:

Similar boots below, but they have a cuff, and different pants, these have button detailing (not sure how high those buttons go):

…what is up with that ask dude… teen boppers? WTF?

*~Trolls~* Gotta love ‘em!

In my younger days, it was spelled "teeny boppers" and referred more to “a young teenager, especially a girl, who keenly follows the latest fashions in clothes and pop music,” especially boy bands. So… maybe the definition has changed since then? But it still comes across as strange w/ an unnecesary negative connotation the way the Anon used it.

To suggest that “going through X phase” leads to serious mental health problems is wrong on so many levels, totally separate from the fact that I am not “going through a vampire phase,” I just have a blog that is largely focused on a subject and a specific media interpretation of it, but that’s fandom. It’s not “going through a phase.” Just sharing appreciation for something using social media.

And then: “all my friends went through that phase and one has serious mental problems now.” If we take this as fact and not trolling (which it IS)(not that I want to engage in a real discussion over this):

  • So, that’s 1 out of how many? 2? 10? 1,000?
  • “serious mental problems?” What is their definition of “serious mental problems”?
  • Are those "serious mental problems" so awful as to be ALL considered “unsafe”?
  • How does Anon know the “serious mental problems” weren’t brought on by, say, genetics, a difficult family life, an aggressive duck situation, a unicycle accident, the stress brought on by the pressure of wanting to measure up to societal ideals, or, like, VIRTUALLY ANY NUMBER OF THOSE OR OTHER THINGS INDIVIDUALLY or compounded together?

It’s most likely a troll, who has become active in the last month or so, and asked me other things trying to get some kind of reaction like a little kid prodding an adult for attention.

Reminder to that Anon: I’m not required to answer anything.

Nah you’re not slim or pretty enough to be a vampire

floozys-deactivated20180908:

ok but like are you trying to tell me that there has never been a fat vampire? a fat person has never been bitten nor has a vampire ever drank enough blood to put on some weight? really?

First of all why would you say that to a stranger on the internet? I feel sorry for Anon, that they felt the need to put someone down this heartlessly. What a gross oversimplification.

How dare you tell someone they’re not pretty or slim enough for anything. Who made you the Decider of Prettiness and Slimness? I didn’t vote for you.

While it’s true that fandoms/media tend not to glamorize fat and/or ugly fictional vampires, they do exist.

@askavampirologist might have more to say on this, but here’s a whole pile of fat and/or ugly vampires some of which I found on a QUICK SEARCH OF TEH GOOGLE which Anon could also have done but was apparently too lazy or cynical to bother with doing.

1. Magnus, Lestat’s maker, is described as being ugly. He’s missing all his teeth except for his fangs. Were they lost/removed before he became a vampire or after? We don’t know. Usually, having all one’s teeth is a necessary element in being considered “attractive,” among other things. [Fanart by J. Oliver, Magnus on the right]

image

2. Meet Pearl from Blade, a FAT AND UGLY VAMPIRE. Someone made him (I don’t remember if Pearl was m/f) a vampire, was it before he was obese or after? Was it before he got ugly or after? Someone had a reason to do it and it might not have been based on beauty or slimness AT ALL.

image

3. Here’s Deacon from What We Do in the Shadows, and while I wouldn’t call him FAT, I wouldn’t call him SLIM either. Nor is he attractive to everyone even tho he thinks he is.

image

4. Here’s a Cassandra Clare quote on the subject: “Maybe they didn’t make vampires out of ugly people. Or maybe ugly people just didn’t want to live forever.”

^While I don’t necessarily agree with her, there could be some truth in that. Not everyone would want to have to kill to live forever, maybe it so happens that “fat” and/or “ugly” people are more compassionate in that regard and wouldn’t be able to do it. Or there have been

“fat” and/or “ugly” vampires who have chosen to die rather than continue vampiring for whatever reasons.

You want some more? Hit the jump.

5. Alan Moore made a “morbidly obese vampire bride” … “a fat monster that spends her day wallowing in the filth of an abandoned movie theater.“  It was part of a Swamp Thing series, I think. [full page here]

image

6. Lady Luljetta “is a female vampire who resides in the country of Lelitania, where is originally from no one really knows.” [X] There seems to be fanart of her out there! [fanart by @fatline, who will draw any and all fat related draw requests]

7. This is a very real book, I haven’t read it but apparently it’s part of a FAT WHITE VAMPIRE series!

8. Here’s another fat vampire series:

9. Here’s a coupla fat vampires in a cartoon:
