lestat is a delightful and infuriating protagonist. the part in TVL where he loses his shit when marius shows him the king and queen is so very endearing (well it’s endearing if you’re not armand i guess)
Totally endearing! Armand is kinda charmed too but he would never admit such bc he jelly that Marius told/showed ‘Stat stuff Armand didn’t seeee
I could write a thesis on this. DON’T WORRY I WON’T DO THAT.
(BTW, if you’re just looking for music reccs, I have a VC fanmix, fanmix, and music tag for that)
First of all, you have to consider when are they listening to music? It can be solitary or social…
Armand ~
♫
Enjoys gathering a small audience and hiring live musicians to play complicated classical pieces. Or asking that vampires who can play things come and entertain them. He still loves Sybelle at the piano, even better that her repertoire has expanded beyond the Appassionata. Antoine has played lively duets with her.
Otherwise, Armand throws on huge wireless headsets while perusing art galleries. He’ll listen to anything others recommend to him, he shares a Spotify account so that anyone can try out his playlist, which has a broad spectrum of musical styles.
Armand is drawn to works that are used in ice skating competitions, oddly. It is a recent obsession.
David ~
♫
Musicals, anything upbeat. Has a love for Spanish culture, Flamenco, like the Gypsy Kings. Without much urging, Lestat will put on makeup and dress up in a Flamenco gown and dance with David in public!
David’s rainy-day guilty pleasure are artists like Michael Bolton, for when he’s home alone, feeling left out of the coven activities.
He also loves Sting; the song that hooked him was Desert Rose, which Marius sent him on a mix-CD because of the Arabic singer, Cheb Mami.
Louis ~
♫
It takes a long time for Louis to warm up to new bands, and he likes a few pieces by Hozier which Lestat added to Louis’ outdated iPod. It’s an older gen model but it still works fine, so Louis doesn’t see a need to replace it.
He prefers pieces without lyrics, ambient works that he can melt into while reading.
The Blade Runner movie that Armand got him to watch the first time made Louis a Vangelis fan and a fan of film soundtracks. He often plays the Gone Girl soundtrack.
Marius ~
♫
Daniel and Lestat have introduced him to alot of modern music. Marius will listen while he paints. Marius is the biggest Hozier fan of the four discussed.
Mortal again? I can barely fathom what such an experience might be like. The answer does come easily enough to me despite that.
First, I would go to Rome and mingle with other mortals that gather around the Colosseum. How enjoyable it would be to join one of the guided tours, listening to a charming guide talk so animatedly about the history of the structure. And I would thrill to stand within it, feeling the sunshine upon me from all sides – Prometheus’ blessing for just one more day! I might get my photograph taken with the men that dress up as Roman gladiators and soldiers. Wouldn’t that be funny? To be standing there in the shadow of Vespasian’s vision with men of this age, the Roman and the would-be Romans?
After that I would find a rooftop upon which a hastened studio might be put together. Then I’d paint and paint and paint by the light of the sun, in such a fervor, until the setting sun stole too much illumination for me to continue. I fear such an event might leave me obsessed for such a chance. Why, I might very well rest my body there upon the ground near those canvases until the sun had risen again, if just to take full advantage. I don’t think it’s avoidable. To see those colors by the light of day again, to memorize them anew rather than trust to distant memory, I couldn’t help myself.
I’d probably act as a glutton too. Feasting upon the treats of chocolate, coffee, the Italian foods that are as much as a visual feast as they are a physical one. And wine. Plenty of wine. Or perhaps I ought to avoid it. I suspect if I got my hands upon wine I’d get too intoxicated in the morning to get anything done and the opportunity would be wasted by a drunken Marius.
The other interesting wrinkle is that in her book, Pandora describes him as returning to Rome from his wanderings with long hair, which was very much not done, it being a barbarian look. I like think that he let his hair grow so he could mingle better and get them to talk to him (in much the same way that people will – often unconsciously – alter their speech patterns to fit in) to get material for whatever he was writing at the time.
Of course, as you say, the situation with the druids was a whole other thing, but the fact he’d kept his hair long against social custom in the past explains why he doesn’t always rush to cut it in later times – apparently in Europe in the 15th century men could get away with whatever length they wanted, though I’m trying to narrow it down to 15th century Italy, or even Venice, because jesus christ I require all the Marius knowledge apparently…
I will defend Antonio 5ever, so I respect you (and others) for defending actors in roles that others disagree with.
You have a valid point, and I actually rather like this production still is he wearing red velvet?? (I think it’s velour but it counts!)
…and yet, we also have Lee Pace…
I liked the idea of the druids not letting him cut his hair. Something about that felt like another means of trying to break him, by taking away his ability to even choose his own grooming, they were trying to chip away at his sense of self, the better to give himself over to what they wanted him to be for them.
Maybe part of why Marius was drawn to rescue Armand from the brothel is that he could relate to the frustration of imprisonment, though his own abuse was very different from Armand’s.
