To clarify, bc I just posted about it, to my knowledge, there are 2 separate December VC fanworks things happening:

These are separate calls for fanworks, the @vcsecretgifts exchange is not anon, and runs for the holidays only; I hope that the vampire chronicles anon fanworks meme will continue on beyond December. We needs a consistent one! It can be anon or not. More info on it as it becomes more developed.

just-another-vcblog:

Alright, I am writing this all out again because I thought I answered it last night but tumblr decided to send it to the void instead of to my blog.

@wicked-felina ask and I shall deliver. If I talked about all my faves I would be writing about over 100 songs, so I’m just going to write about a few that I have specific characters or circumstances in mind.

(I Don’t Know Why) But I Do – I imagine a dimly lit yet cozy room in New York in the earlier 1960’s. Louis and Armand are slowly dancing to the radio, holding each other in their arms. This song comes on, neither admitting to the other just how much it encapsulates their feelings, but they look into each other’s eyes and they know.

When We Were Gods – Since the first time I heard this song I have gotten Lestat/Akasha vibes. While it’s not something I ship, I do find their relationship fascinating. They both display an almost naive infatuation with the other, causing them to love and excuse the very behaviours they condemn and slaughter others for. And the regret and the horror, as well as the remaining love which Lestat ponders at the beginning of TotBT is heartbreaking.

Rainbow in the Dark – This one is actually a bit of an in-joke for myself. Have you ever been to one of those shows where they adapt an existing work but add in hits from the ‘70’s or ‘80’s? The actors are all over dramatic and the songs only vaguely relate to the subject matter, but the audience as well as the actors are all having an absolutely wonderful time. That is my ideal adaptation of TVL. I feel as though it would really capture the spirit of the young Lestat. This song would be sung by Armand when he explains their ways to Lestat. “You’ve been left on your own, like a rainbow in the dark!”

Moving In Stereo – This is the perfect hunting song, particularly for Louis. Slow, methodic, yet almost mindlessly driven, creating a trance like state, the beat like the ebb and flow of the tide or the beating of a heart.

Korobushka – This is one of my all time favourite songs. A slow beginning gives rise to a feverish melody of strings. If you consider Prince Lestat canon imagine a ballroom full of vampires all dancing in perfect sync, twisting and twirling to the precisely organized chaos.

That’s all I’ll write about for now at least, since (like the playlist) this became far longer than I intended.

JUST BECAUSE I WANT EVERYONE TO ENJOY THIS FULLY –  I’m linking the playlist again to save confusion. =D  HERE!

Rainbow in the Dark is such an excellent VC vibe gotdamn haha. =D

Hey! :) Are you going to continue the last drop or is it finished?

♥u♥ You’re so sweet to ask! @wicked-felina (aka Rebness) look look they want more!

(You’re the same person or another a second lovely reader, bc I saw that we recently got a comment on it over on AO3 asking for moooore, and I haven’t had a chance to log in over there and r e s p o n d like a Proper Ficwriter ought to… and I am very touched that anyone wants more…)

SO! The Last Drop is technically a few scenes that didn’t fit into the main story which was Signature Blend, so if you haven’t read that, it’s the same AU ‘verse. We have ideas for a few more chapters for the Last Drop, so if I ever break through my writer’s block *cries*, you’ll have those and more ideas that are in the works with my awesome collaborator <333

I kick my muse into gear bc the @vcsecretgifts exchange WILL BE HAPPENING and I’ll be participating!

Nicolas de Lenfent and Louis de Pointe du Lac.

Turns out they don’t look alike at all, who’d’ve thunk?

Look at @hedonistbyheart‘s tags LOL  #in other words plz don’t cast the same damn guy  #also 99% of fandom louis looks like nicki guys plz i suffer

THIS. And please guys please just read the descriptions of Louis properly in the books. HE DOES NOT HAVE LONG HAIR. His hair is relatively short, and wavy. Pleeeeease can we have more canon Louis and less Pitt!Louis and his bizarre hair.

I am 100% supportive of #in other words plz don’t cast the same damn guy. That “twin” comment from TVL was more about their personalities than physical resemblance:

I fell fatally in love with Louis, a young dark-haired bourgeois planter, graceful of speech and fastidious of manner, who seemed in his cynicism and self destructiveness the very twin of Nicolas.

Although, I’d say canon Nicki has dark and curly hair… the first time Lestat describes Nicki in TVL:

Only his hair was what it used to be, dark and very curly, and boyish looking for some reason though it was tied back with a fine bit of silk ribbon.

Re: Louis: I gotta say, I do love me some closer-to-canon depictions of Louis! All fanart of Louis is good, but yes, @wicked-felina and I have discussed this privately for longer than I’d want to admit and I am convinced that Louis has short, wavy/curly hair as shown above.

Brad’s Louis will always have a place in my heart, long and Barbie-like, almost chestnut color (I think Brad himself called it “Lion King” hair”)! I don’t remember if Louis actually has long enough hair in canon to tie back in a ribbon, and if he doesn’t, then really, shorter like this fanart here, is more canon-compliant, at least in my reading of canon.

BUT ANYWAY I wouldn’t trample on anyone’s depictions of Louis, #Your Headcanon May Vary, and all that, but it is true that we have more of Brad!Louis than not, so I encourage everyone to try their hand at a Louis with shorter hair (it will also serve the dual purpose of pissing off Lestat, so, y’know, there’s that).

Its Hour Come Round

Fresh fanfic! By yours truly and @wicked-felina.

Summary: Lestat makes a surprise visit to Trinity Gate in NYC, tries his best to convince Louis to come home with him. Takes place right near the beginning of Prince Lestat.

Characters: Lestat, Louis, Armand (very short appearance)

Words: 2930

Warnings: No warnings apply

No major spoilers but it takes place at the beginning of PL.

Lestat listened to the sound of footfall outside the bedroom. A very light step, like that of a cat – Armand, he reasoned, followed by the deliberate, steady pace of a vampire who let his weight sink into the stylish carpet as if he had the right to pretend to be human.

He glanced towards the French doors of Louis’s bedroom, checking that he had shut them behind him when he had made his usual grand entrance through them, and gave a satisfied nod before his lip curled in disgust at the requisite mess surrounding the bed (“It’s called a ‘ floordrobe’,” Benji had told him). His own clothes were neatly folded on the chaise near the window, but he had decided – in a burst of generosity – that he would toss them to one side should Louis wish to take their entertainment to the chaise. It reminded him of a strikingly similar one they’d had in the Rue Royale, a sturdy chaise that had survived many amorous encounters between them. A shock of lust crashed through him; what a generous maker he was, giving Louis a nice nostalgic visit.

Louis’s footsteps drew nearer to the door; Lestat heard him mutter something to Armand, and then the slow turn of the knob. He stretched out his tawny body, rearranged some of the rose petals to discreetly cover his treasure (better to delay Louis meeting his old friend to build the need and lust between them), ensured the silk throw was nestled over one hip invitingly, and rested his head on one hand.

Its Hour Come Round

So I know that Louis doesn’t really like being objectified and doesn’t like being called beautiful and sexy and all but how would he react if he was called ugly?

image

I discussed this w/ @wicked-felina who says:

Hmm. Louis would probably believe criticism of his looks (I like the headcanon of various people, including @gairid) that he felt different and weird because of his androgynous beauty as a mortal. But he would protest that he doesn’t care about his looks

There was also a headcanon (@gairid‘s?) that his mother found his eye color strange and ruthlessly criticized him over that and other things about his appearance. Maybe that’s why Louis retreated into art and fiction for his aesthetic tastes, that the ideal of beauty captured by artists and writers was superior to what reality could offer, including his own appearance. The fact that he ran the family business and provided for his mother despite her attitude towards him taught him that actions, things you can change, have more weight than something you’re born with and cannot change, like your eye color.

I headcanon that Claudia playfully called him ugly on more than one occasion, and called him ugly on some not-so-playful occasions later on, too. Only someone he loved that much could wound him like she did about that subject.

Louis probably still has a lingering feeling from his mortal days about his looks, but if confronted about it, would probably roll his eyes and change the subject.

Have you read any good Louis/ Lestat fics that you would recommend?

Fanfic?? there’s no such thing as VC fanfic… pfffft. What are you crazy honestly??! J/k it’s out there. *blows kisses at AO3*

Recommendations…

image

Thanks for asking! I haven’t had a fanfic rec request in awhile.

However, as far as “good L/L fics,” that is wholly and wildly subjective. The danger of recommending any fic runs the same risk of doing those Follow Forever posts, which I don’t do, because I’ve seen ppl who were left out feel hurt and excluded.

Recommending fic feels slightly different to me bc it’s up to every reader whether they like something or not, and I don’t read every fic with that pairing. My closer VC friends and I happen to agree on many favorite fics and that’s been wonderful, but please ask other ppl for recommendations, too. Anyone is welcome to reblog/comment with recs!

My tags:

Archive of Our Own (aka AO3) has a mission statement about protecting fanworks from copyright infringement arguments, so I feel pretty safe recc’ing stuff that’s on there:

  • Gulfport: A British Petroleum Fanfic (Part One) by hw_campbell_jnr – There are 2 parts and it’s incomplete but this is devastatingly beautiful long!fic. Hipster modern Lestat and Louis, Lestat going by a pseudonym, politics woven in, it’s just too good. It annoys me how good it is. I am annoyed. I would be less annoyed if it were COMPLETED.

Anyone is welcome to reblog/comment with recs.

Why did Louis have a wife in the movie, instead of a brother?

wicked-felina:

i-want-my-iwtv:

I don’t know the real reason, I don’t know anyone who does. I don’t know if it was Anne Rice’s choice, or Neil Jordan’s.

I think there were a lot of factors that went into that decision, and it stirs up alot of issues and questions, alot has been written about it and alot more can be written about it!

image

TL;DR: 1) I think it was done to cut time, Louis being distraught about losing a wife and child is immediately understandable to anyone who hasn’t read the books. It starts off the film with Louis questioning the reasons of a God that could punish him for seemingly no reason at all.*

2) The other main issue is whether Louis is/was straight or if he actually was bisexual/homosexual/etc. as a mortal and Lestat entering the picture and pulling Louis into vampiring made it possible for Louis to let go of his preconceived ideas and social/religious/etc. repression and accept himself for what he really was. Neil Jordan probably wanted that left open-ended and unanswered.

(*It could have set up the whole Louis-frustrated-about-how-religion-plays-into-vampiring, but that was cut from the film, too.)

1) One of the audiobook recordings for IWTV has a runtime of 14 hours and 28 minutes [X] and that’s ALOT OF STORY to condense down into a movie that can’t be that long. Scenes have to be cut.

  • The movie we got is 2 hours long, and in 1994, I seem to remember movies being more in the 1.5 hour range. Titanic, clocking in at a little over 3 hours long, was kind of ridiculed by the critics for that lengthy runtime. These days, a 2-3 hour movie is not really as big a deal.
  • Building in the right amount of time/scenes to show the circumstances of Paul’s death and why Louis felt so responsible for it, that would have increased the runtime and delayed the amount of time we get to the actual vampiring. I can’t check the film right now but I think Lestat appears within the first 15 minutes of the movie, for good reason. To get the vampiring STARTED.

2)

In 1994, same-sex marriage was legal in zero states. Now it is the law of the land. Movie!IWTV was already pushing the envelope to suggest that Louis/Lestat were in a romantic relationship together. So, if Louis starts his story as having been married to a woman, it would appear that he’s established as being straight. On the surface.

  • HOWEVER! this is a Neil Jordan movie, and one of his previous movies, the Crying Game, Jordan had gender issues and sexual orientations as main concerns, so perhaps starting Louis off as SEEMING TO BE STRAIGHT and then having Lestat swoop in and now Louis is “with” Lestat somehow, experiences that moment of intense intimacy when he is given the Dark Gift… so Jordan seems to be asking the audience if Louis was actually bisexual or homosexual as a mortal and suppressed it? Since we never see Louis and Lestat actually make love on screen (aside from the Dark Gift happening), does it still count as a homosexual relationship?
  • ^I think Neil Jordan wanted these questions left open-ended, and for that to be part of the exquisite torture that is the Louis/Lestat ship. Is it platonic or romantic? Jordan isn’t telling, and neither is Louis.

There is, as I said, a lot more to it than that, but these are the main issues that come to mind for me, and I’m also trying to be concise. Anyone can reblog/comment with more ideas.

Anne Rice herself changed it because she claims she wanted people to see Louis could be bisexual, but also because she doesn’t understand her own goddamn character and the importance of his motivation and what Paul’s faith and loss represented anymore.

She has expressed surprise before that people called it out and weren’t happy with it, which really says more about her and the lack of thought that went into this change than anything else.

Neil Jordan didn’t change it, and would have handled it well, I’m certain.

Oh Anne.
