ahhahh I nearly died watching the iwtv bts video. That was pure gold omg. Tom cruise upset that brad pitt is taller than him and wanting risers. Brad pitt just leaning there like “where did I go wrong” and anne’s cringey 90’s look all made me laugh so hard.

That BTS video is a new fandom treasure and like, back in the 90′s, Tom’s publicist Pat Kingsley would have tracked the source down and made them delete it. ;A; * I love that we’re getting stuff out of private collections now!

^I think this is one of my fave shots of Brad “where did I go wrong” Pitt from that movie… which is why it was so great to see him go from that to this BAMF later in the movie:

^YISSSS PLZ

^Height issues aside (and yeah I’m sure that was an issue!), here’s my take Tom Cruise’s eyebrow concerns. The lighting is different but you can still tell the difference in his makeup/hair. On the left is a still from an earlier scene that was shot and probably had to be discarded bc the blond was too bright, orangey, weirdly smooth (I think they were going for “pampered” and “golden”). Looks like they changed it to highlights and lowlights of blond and a mussier texture to mesh better with Tom’s own coloring. So he had good reason to be concerned about his eyebrows, he probably didn’t want more footage to be wasted.

^anne’s cringey 90’s look: Hey that was in style then bc BELIEVE ME I LIVED IT! But yeah she looks a lot better these days, current 90′s-inspired looks are very different from some of the actual 90′s looks.

*Even though it wasn’t an interview specifically, it was unauthorized bts footage.

Amy Nicholson, How YouTube and the Internet Killed Tom Cruise, America’s Last Movie Star.

“Kingsley was adamant about keeping Cruise out of the tabloids. At press junkets, she demanded that journalists sign contracts swearing not to sell their quotes to the supermarket rags. Then Kingsley expanded her reach and insisted that all TV interviewers destroy their tapes after his segment had aired.”

Anne Rice Reflects on Her New LESTAT Novel and the VAMPIRE CHRONICLES TV Series (Exclusive) | Nerdist

A movie reboot of The Vampire Chronicles very nearly happened, but the studio never fully committed to the project. “Universal and Imagine had the Vampire Chronicles in development for 18 months. But this did not work out, and Universal did not renew the option,” admitted Rice. “When the rights reverted to me, I realized, more than ever, that television was where the series belonged.

…“Times have certainly changed since Warner Brothers made a movie version of Queen of the Damned in 2002, one that bore little resemblance to the novel. [Anne says:] “Hollywood in the last ten years has come to recognize the importance of the fans; it has come to see we are living in the age of the nerd, the geek, the fanboy or fangirl, the avid devoted reader. Hollywood has stopped dismissing and condescending to this audience and has started to respect it, only perhaps because Hollywood has no real choice. The immense success of Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and Game of Thrones has made it clear: fidelity to the books is where success lies.”

She continued, “This is a wonderful time to be making a TV series of The Vampire Chronicles.  I get brilliant suggestions and ideas every day from the readers who post on our Vampire Chronicles series page. They have introduced me to musical composers, actors and actresses I hadn’t seen before, and they have generously talked about the situations and scenes they value in my books and want to see on the screen. I love all this. I don’t want to let them down. I won’t let them down.”

^Clearly AR wants to be faithful to her fans and the books in the new adaptation(s) 😀 (Hopefully that includes not retro-fitting the later books backwards into canon)

[^scan from a 90′s magazine by @thesaramonster]

Tom has said that he didn’t change the script for IWTV. Whether you believe him or not is up to you, but considering what did make it into the finished film (and reliable sources I have spoken to directly), I’d say he was willing to do pretty much everything they asked for.

And keep in mind that that movie really did push the envelope for its time. There are things in it that are still very difficult to film even now.

Why Straight Rural Men Have Gay ‘Bud-Sex’ With Each Other

impostoradult:

yaymacbeth:

yayfeminism:

Interesting article on straight rural men who have sex with other men. Some of these men don’t think of their behavior as ‘gay’ because they’re ‘manly men’ who just have oral sex with other ‘manly men’ once in a while.

“As Cain [one of the interview subjects] said, “I’m really not drawn to what I would consider really effeminate faggot type[s],” but he does “like the masculine looking guy who maybe is more bi.” Similarly, Matt (60) explained, “If they’re too flamboyant they just turn me off,” and Jack noted, “Femininity in a man is a turn off.” Ryan (60) explained, “I’m not comfortable around femme” and “masculinity is what attracts me,” while David shared that “Femme guys don’t do anything for me at all, in fact actually I don’t care for ’em.” Jon shared, “I don’t really like flamin’ queers.”

“I go on road trips, drink beer, go down to the city [to] look at chicks, go out and eat, shoot pool, I got one friend I hike with. It normally leads to sex, but we go out and do activities other than we meet and suck.”

Pat described a typical meetup with his regular: “We talk for an hour or so, over coffee … then we’ll go get a blowjob and then, part our ways.” Similarly, Richard noted, “Sex is a very small part of our relationship. It’s more friends, we discuss politics … all sorts of shit.”

“The participants reinforced their straightness through unconventional interpretations of same-sex sex: as “helpin’ a buddy out,” relieving “urges,” acting on sexual desires for men without sexual attractions to them.”

helpin’ a buddy out

I always have such conflicted reactions to things like this. Because on one level, it has an element of genuine tragic-ness to it, that these men clearly feel same-sex attraction, but CANNOT admit that fact to themselves, even in the midst of admitting that they sleep with other men.

But on the other hand, the mental gymnastics that they employ and the convoluted ways they try to endlessly reframe it as being still Hetero™ somehow do have an air of comedy to them, at times. (I mean “bud-sex” REALLY?)

Why Straight Rural Men Have Gay ‘Bud-Sex’ With Each Other

I really think people should give PLATROA a try before judging it. I have seen so much negativity towards it. It’s sad :( specially because Anne is so excited about it.

That’s a valid opinion. But I don’t like the word “should” when it deals with fandom, even about negativity. The resistance to this book is completely understandable.

image

[^Louis read PLROA and this was his response to Lestat]

People judge things before they read them, people judge other people before they meet them, people judge anything that can be judged w/o experiencing them. So much judgment out there. I’m certainly not going to demand fair treatment for a book.

Just bc an author is excited about their work does not mean we can’t still judge it on its merits as a novel, and we all have our own ideas about what makes a great novel/story. Dr. Frankenstein was very excited about his creation, other people decided it was a monster.

People’s resistance to this book, specifically, is not coming out of nowhere. Those of us who have read the prior books, or have the slightest knowledge of the characters and stories, and every fan in between, there was something that drew us into VC, and from what I’m seeing, it’s nearly impossible to believe that this book is remotely part of what preceded it unless you had only read PL and/or seen movie!QOTD, in which case, I guess it must be all smooth sailing for ya.

I haven’t had a chance to read it yet, but other people ARE reading PLROA and judging it for what it actually is. Michael Gavin wrote this about it, w/ my emphasis added (”Sink your fangs into news from the world of Anne Rice and the Vampire Chronicles”):

“…The latest of the series, a follow up to 2014’s Prince Lestat, is making waves (pun intended) over the Atlantis story element (and all that goes along with that). Tying the story to characters in her third book, Queen of the Damned, Rice completely upends the myths and lore woven into the Chronicles (almost to the point of jumping the shark IMHO). The characters we love, like Lestat, Louis, Armand and others are still who they are, yet the surprises tucked into Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis feel like they cheapen the fabric of the series’ mythos.”

Upending the canon myths and lore, jumping the shark, cheapening the fabric of the series’ mythos? That all sounds like something that fans would put up some resistance about. Can you blame them if they feel betrayed? If they feel like their beloved characters have been thrown into a blender w/ aliens and the lost city of Atlantis? I can’t blame them.

I don’t blame them for reacting w/ the exaggerated Tumblrand Hyperbole™ either, bc some of that is probably real emotion. Some of it is for effect, the exaggeration tends to get more notes than rational analysis. But I think it’s both.

I can empathize with the negativity. I wish I could blindly support AR in every choice she makes, but I can’t do that, either. I try not to criticize her myself bc she has given us an incredible gift already in the earlier books. I hope we can trust her to faithfully adapt them to TV/film as how they were originally written, and not try to wedge in this more recent provocative material.

Confession: When I first saw and later read IWTV, I didn’t think that Lestat and Louis were a couple. I understood they had a relationship that was complicated and deep on many levels, but I thought it was because of the whole turning into vampire and living together for many years thing, not romantical or sexual.

Well… your message sat in my inbox for 5 days bc this is a question every reader has to answer for themselves. It partly depends on how much canon you’ve read.

image

[^X “I love him in ways that I can’t explain to other people. They don’t understand… it’s not their fault.” is that not canon?!]

IWTV is Louis’ account of their time in that era, and as @vraik astutely pointed out, Louis admits that he’s holding back information when he says “If I held something too close for you to ask about it, I would not bring it up in the first place.” Lestat says as much near the end of TVL, that Louis left many things out. *~Unreliable narrators!~*

And movie!IWTV had even less of what Louis says in the book, because it had to be edited for the sake of time… many scenes in the book were not in the movie. Also, it was made in the early 90′s, keep in mind that it pushed the envelope for its time re: showing any homosexuality.

tl;dr: I ship Louis/Lestat, I don’t need to define my ship as romantic, sexual, or platonic, etc. I just hardcore ship them TOGETHER.

Hit the jump for more, cut for length.

While they don’t “date” in canon, Louis talks about Lestat in IWTV with a lot of fascination, and later, Lestat writes about Louis with a lot of fascination, too (more, really!)… and they don’t actually kiss in canon until the 3rd book, right before Lestat’s big concert, and then they’re separated again soon after. It’s a ship that takes alot of Read Between the Lines.

Most of the vampires who are turned in canon are turned bc their makers love them so much that they can’t let their loved one be perishable any longer. Whatever Louis’ perception was of IWTV!Lestat, it seems clear to many of the fandom that Lestat chose Louis for more than his wealth and/or friendship, and that now, in later canon, the feelings between them are mutual.

AR answered this in 2014 when she was answering #Fan Questions for Lestat, in which she RP’d Lestat admitting that Louis would be his “Forever Companion.”

There was an article out in 2012 that had some varied comments worth reading about it: Anne Rice confirms that the vampires Louis and Lestat are a same-sex couple with a child

io9: There’s the concept of Louis and Lestat as Claudia’s “parents,” which we see in the novel, movie and now in the graphic novel. When you know the narrative, it’s not quite the modern statement it could appear to be visually, in the adaptation. Are you okay with that as an idea for the new century?

AR: Sure! [Laughs] Sure! I never thought of it, they were the first vampire same-sex parents.

io9: I had wondered if that had been a thought on your mind before.

AR: No.

io9: That’s the way that it seems to be shown, it’s very much “she’s our daughter now.” So I can say, they’re a same-sex couple with children?

AR: Absolutely! Claudia! She’s their daughter.

My additions to one of the comments is pretty funny and you should check it out bc hey, you’ve read this far so? KILL MORE TIME.

I was working on a novel called Born for Atlantis, and I just couldn’t get it to work. I thought, “What if I could somehow combine this with Lestat and the vampires?” And it was like, everything worked. Something happens to me when I write from Lestat’s point of view. There’s no question about it. By the time I was done, it felt inevitable, like it always had been…. It was a rare experience.

Anne Rice, Entertainment Weekly (August 5, 2016)

So, @roselioncourt brings this article to our attention, and I think the relevant quote is above, but there’s a little more about AR’s interest in Atlantis in there.

The relevance is that AR had been working on this Atlantis book and added VC into it later. We’ll see how well that works, but this is an answer to the question, “Atlantis… what?”

[X revised]

firelight-fading:

@i-want-my-iwtv Thought you and the rest of the fandom might want to see this, about 4/5 down from the new interview!
Director Josh Boone basically just confirmed himself (instead of the other source I had earlier) that the new film WILL be an adaption of The Vampire Lestat, but will have tiny bits of influence from other books (I’m assuming he means IWTV and QTD). He also said he’s aiming for a trilogy AND a spin-off tv series! Super exciting!

THANK U @firelight-fading A+ REPORTING!

Your synopsis was gr9, but I must have it from his own words (my highlights):

image

I trust this man. Why? It appear that he’s not rushing into it to make the $$$, he’s doing it bc he respects and has affection for the source material, dating back from his youth. “These were hugely inspiring books when I was young. They really helped shape me the same way [Stephen King]’s books did.”

He is totally in the VC fandom, an honorary member. He just may not know it yet ;]

LOOKIT THE WAY HE TAGGED UP THE STAND TO PREP IT FOR ADAPTATION THAT IS SOME SERIOUS FAN LOVIN’ [X]

image

^He’s gonna take care of us similarly ❤

Reasons (in no particular order) why I trust Josh Boone w/ this adaptation, from his IG account:

Hit the jump.

image

^Mentions the VC in his IG caption. It would appear that he’s honored to be part of it! Also he shares his icon pic w/ Stephen King, and really, Stephen King is also one of my faves for his amazing storytelling abilities, I mean, I just don’t even have words for what he does, but he seems to come from a similar place that AR did, they were both steeped in the horror media of their youth and he alchemizes through his own unique filter and GOLD COMES OUT. A different flavor of gold than AR’s, for sure, but they are comparable.

image

^He collects the old industry magazines, old publicity from the time period. He keeps himself updated on horror movie FX and topics so he’s not just gonna give us some shitty 90′s eye makeup, slap on a pair of fangs and a wierd accent and expect us to swoon. LIKE SOME MOVIES HAVE DONE.

image

image

image

^Like seriously he takes care of his books, and he has the nice hardcover editions.

image

Daddy/daughter sci fi movie night too cute. TOO CUTE. E.T. is worth 50+ viewings, absolutely.

Gonna restrain myself from suggesting he cast his adorable daughter as Claudia. But if he wanted to do it, I would certainly not stand in his way.

image

^Also I think that’s a

Jeffrey Alan Love illustration. Gruesome. I love it.

image

^BROKEBACK. HE IS NOT SCARED OF M/M. Give it to us, Mr. Boone. We can handle it. We’ve been writing fanfic of it for 30+ yrs.

image

^His list of fave movies includes alot of great ones. Also pleased w/ his director crushes.

Did you really make it through this whole post?? NICE.
