witchyrem-ains requested this, since the original source was garama‘s deviantart page, which is all emptied out. Nice comparison here between the rough and the cleaned up-version.
(I hope it’s okay to repost, garama! You know you’re one of my fave fanartists, but it cannot be said enough <3)
I didn’t buy it bc I don’t have a Bluray player; and I would have bought said Bluray player JUST to watch the new bonus features in a 20th Anniversary edition of IWTV if it had any, which it sadly does not (or so I’ve been told) ;A;
BUT I do know that the picture quality is in fact better in the Bluray. Let me show you! omg ppl want to know about the extras not the picture quality idec i do what i want
At first glance, on a laptop or smaller device screen (and at this teensy size like ugh) these two shots of Louis look identical (it’s not exactly the same frame but it’s as close as I could get w/o going crazay):
But when you see it on a bigger screen, there’s more resolution on the Bluray version, it’s a sharper image:
As far as the extra features, which is what u really wanted to know about before I took a detour…
As mentioned above, I don’t think there are any on the 20th anniversary edition :[ BUT THERE SHOULD BE… and I know specifically that Neil Jordan has been informed within the last year that WE WANT EXTRAS AND CUT SCENES AND SUCH like how did he not know that??! Just bc it’s 20yrs old doesn’t mean it’s been forgotten.
Is it worth buying it for just a better picture? I would, if I had a Bluray player. Maybe I’ll finally do that since you reminded me…
Anyone have the IWTV Bluray who can tell us if there’s anything new/special on it that I am unaware of?
Thank u! Wow, they changed the title of TVL to “Chosen by Darkness”. Wonder why? Obviously Lestat was Chosen by Darkness, claimed by it, not having the choice himself.
Google translate tells me your fave quote is:
I saw the universe , the sun , the planets and the stars , and the dark night that lasts forever . I started laughing . < You know it ! We will never know why the hell has happened , even when it will end ! > “ .
Which is different than the English version:
I saw the universe, a vision of the sun, the planets, the stars, black night going on forever. And I began to laugh. "Do you realize that! We’ll never know why the hell any of it happened, not even when it’s over!”
A big thing I remember being shocked and impressed with when I first read the VC at 11 yrs old was that Anne Rice was getting away with several cardinal sins in writing:
starting a sentence with “And”
starting a sentence with “But”
Adding Capital Letters Wherever it looks like it might Add Impact (we refer to these as Rice Caps)
So many more…
It looks like in the Italian translation, at least in that one quote you shared, has corrected the starting a sentence with “And” sin!
That, and the other changes, may be error(s) in Google translate. It’s still interesting to compare.
//My dear anon, I have not forgotten thee. This will take a little longer for I have found quite much Armand and cats have in common. I’ll upload the whole comic strip as soon as I get to finish and color it.
“Canon” refers to what is explicitly stated in the books.
Such as: the fact that Lestat killed 8 wolves (”And the pack was eight wolves, not five as the villagers had told me.” (TVL)) on that fateful day, earning the “Wolfkiller” nickname.
“Headcanon” is what books/information you personally believe in, that in your mind have occurred in the series. For more on that, hit the jump.
This is partly bc some people most of us think that the VC went off the rails at a certain point, and they didn’t read, or they read and disagreed with, the events that occurred in some of the later books.
So, for example, someone who stops at Memnoch the Devil (#5) will not accept certain events or ships that occur after that book in the series.
This is where we employ #Your headcanon may vary, and #Ship and let ship.
If person A accepts all of the books in the series as their “headcanon,” that means that they believe in all of the events and ships that have been written.
If person B only believes in books 1-4 as their “headcanon,” that means that they believe in only the events and ships that occur up until that point. (People can skip around, they might accept books 1-3, 5, 6, and 8. Or maybe just 1-4. It all depends on your own imagination!)
If A and B want to RP as the same canon character X, that character will be different based on what X has experienced in canon. Person A’s portrayal may include information and characterization that Person B’s will not, and vice-versa.
That’s partly why people ask about your “headcanon,” to find out whether your muse would be compatible with theirs. After all, if they are RPing as character Y, who first appears in a book you do not accept as canon, then you might have to agree to compromise with them, and find a way to make it work, or you might not be able to RP your muses at all.
We also have a situation here where there are discrepancies between books, we have unreliable narrators who can’t be 100% trusted… such as the scene near the end of IWTV when Louis follows a young vampire to Lestat’s run-down house in NOLA, in which Lestat is crying like a little old lady:
“I could see the tears welling in his eyes; and only when his mouth was stretched in a strange smile of desperate happiness that was near to pain did I see the faint traces of the old scars. How baffling and awful it was, this smoothfaced, shimmering immortal man bent and rattled and whining like a crone.” – Louis,IWTV
Lestat calls bullshit on that moment:
“ ‘Ah, that makes you out to be a perfect liar,’ I said furiously. ‘You described my weeping in your miserable memoir in a scene which we both know did not take place!’ “ – Lestat, TOBT.
I actually don’t know! Purposely. Ignorance is bliss. I’m just grateful we haven’t suffered a crossover of BV/VC.
I’m gonna redirect you to hyperbeeb, who is taking one for the team and reading the first one in the- has read the first one and is now reading the whole series?! Her tag for this journey into madness is #Mary reads the blood vivicanti
The blood Vivicanti is the name given to the vampires that aren’t vampires in the series. The blood Vivicanti are humans who have been infused with the blood of an alien. They possess superhuman senses and speed. A secondary good source for them is human blood which they consume via a proboscis protruding from their tongue which has a stinger at the end. The sting creates an orgasmic effect in its victims. For the blood Vivicanti, drinking of the blood allows them access to the memories and skills of their victims but only for a limited time (except of course in the case of our special snowflake protagonist whose photographic memory lets her retain skills forever).
The word Vivicanti itself was carefully chosen and created by Anne rice. It is a combination of two Latin words to make a new word. From my best guess, it’s a mixture of the word vivi, meaning living or alive and canti which means a song so the literal translation of Vivicanti is living song. So the blood living song. God, it’s blood canticle all over again.
OMG yes! I had a few 1700′s style (or 70′s 1700′s revival…) shirts as a teen, and the tugging motion of pulling those laces from the jacket sleeves is very familiar! Though I didn’t wear leather, I had a ugly burgundy velvet jacket. And I drove a bicycle, not a sports car. (This was mainly David Bowie’s fault, I didn’t read VC until I was 18…) That motion/gif reminds me of listening to glam rock from my walkman and feeling like the most bad ass under-appreciated 14 year old hot mess in town.
Ugly burgundy velvet jacket is also VC. There’s definitely some David Bowie in Lestat (fashion, looks, attitude, musical prowess, etc!). Especially Jareth!Bowie.
Goblin King vs. Brat Prince? I always thought these two moments were worth comparing and now you’ve given me an adequate excuse to do it! They’re both pining for the affections of a brunette… they both use a kid to try to hold onto their brunette… So many comparisons…
Lestat (and Jareth!) is kinda the most bad ass under-appreciated 1421200+ year old hot mess in town.
