Can we talk about… how Louis repeatedly has visual/auditory/tactile hallucinations, episodes of dissociation and depersonalization, and panic and anxiety attacks all throughout IWTV but these things are never really touched upon again in the series… like these are all possible symptoms of very severe depression, which I guess Rice alludes to Louis having throughout the series, but like honestly Louis was barely functional in IWTV and that’s never really been demonstrated again… in the later books Louis is always described as being calm, quiet, morally exceptional, conveniently kind, and romantically “sad.” I’ve always felt like the others’ perception of Louis was completely different from Louis’s perception of himself in his own account, and I wonder what ever happened to that intensity in his character in IWTV. I think if it’s touched upon later at all, it’s in Merrick? A little? Still though, it feels like Louis was conveniently stabilized and made static in the narrative in order to make him an easier character to sideline lmao

Very much so…..

//Frankly, this is an astute observation. And I think a lot of the changes in Louis’ character came, frankly, from his author no longer wishing to associate with him. Anne made it quite clear that she hated Louis’ voice and never wished to write in it again–and it took her almost forty years (39, to be exact) for her to be able to write in it again (I’m referring to the Epilogue in Prince Lestat).

ooc; I agree with @devilsfool re: Anne.  I believe she was actually quoted at one point after writing Merrick saying that she didn’t want to ever write in Louis’ voice again???  Or something like that.  She definitely expressed not caring all that much for his character.

But I can agree with what you’re saying too, because ultimately, IwtV was the only first-person narrative from Louis until the last chapter of PL.  I’ve always felt Louis to be this intense perfectionist that can’t tolerate his own downfalls, and I definitely agree that he shows numerous symptoms of depression.  He’s his biggest critic, and I think that shows a lot in IwtV.

I feel like IwtV would have seemed a lot different if told from Lestat’s perspective?  Because while Lestat may get really, really angry with Louis sometimes, his descriptions of Louis are the most glorified in the books.  He’ll talk about Louis moping around, but he paints a general picture of Louis being a very strong person that is dedicated to his convictions.  Louis is literally his emotional rock, and really, I don’t believe Lestat would actually ever openly write of any breakdowns Louis may or may not have had.  And I feel like if Louis was to have a bad bout of depression, Lestat would be the one to know, above anyone else.

Then you have Khayman’s description of Louis, where he flat out says that Louis can’t exist without Lestat.  And Armand’s bit about Louis in TVA paint him as very melancholy, imo.

I also look at where Louis was when he gave the interview.  He’s a very careful, private person, and he had his reasons for giving the interview in the first place (which can be debated in itself; I’ve always thought it was a cry out for Lestat and/or suicidal recklessness).  He’d been alone for years and felt he’d nothing left.  He was infuriated that Daniel didn’t see his story as despairingly as he himself viewed it to be.  Louis felt down on everything at that point, and I don’t know that he’d really be that open with his experiences and feelings on any other night?

Idk, I’ve always felt that for as emotional as Louis seems to be, he still sucks majorly at actually dealing with his own emotions.  Which is how I reason his major breakdown(s) in Merrick.

/writing this at 1am and hopes it makes sense lol

#YES #THIS #this post cannot be improved upon

Gonna add 2 things anyway.

1 – AR wrote IWTV after the loss of her daughter. Louis was pretty much AR herself, dealing with that grief, questioning a God as to why he had to punish her so much. What did Louis do to deserve a life-in-death living hell? What did Claudia do to deserve eternal imprisonment in that little body? What did AR’s daughter do to deserve dying so painfully at such an early age?

In the end, Louis (and the readers) draws his own answers and has to come to some kind of peace in order to move on. Lestat has his Savage Garden, in which peace lies in the fact that there is no explanation, bad things just happen to good people. The most we can do is try to do Good and help eachother survive the slings and arrows, try not to be the slinger of arrows, and if we are, to do it for the sake of Good. We’re all imperfect.

2 – Louis’ voice is pretty damn hard to write, when done well. My guess is that AR didn’t see a need to revisit his POV, especially with the intensity of focus it required. @annabellioncourt had some excellent points on this awhile back:

“Louis is more along the lines of the Oscar Wilde’s era of the very late 19th century, which is what most people think of today when they think “Victorian writing.” Similar in voice (though not subject) would also be Matthew Arnold (read some of his essays, and tell me that’s not how Louis talks), Wilkie Collins, and Henry James.

”…Louis is not so much involved in human goings on, he’s aware of events and films, but still speaks in the language of the century where he spent the most time communicating with others–also he would not have lost his speech patterns over those decades with Armand because Armand was mostly isolated in his language circles. So we can look at all of that as to why Louis talks the way he does.“

“Louis does show a HEAVY influence from the French symbolist poets (the school that Charles Baudelaire was from).”

And of course Louis would express himself in the language of the writers he enjoyed. OF COURSE HE WOULD. We all know he’s basically a big ol’ bookworm w/ fangs.

Guys, I really miss Gabrielle’s voice, but I feel like there isn’t much happening in the RP world, and all my dashes are so dead that getting anyone besides Lestat to talk is a freaking pain.

Anyone want to plot? Ideas? Just want to annoy Gabrielle? Please go for it.

oh my god what the heck is happening someone fanmailed me saying that im violating anne rice’s copyright what the heck what what oh my god im deleting this blog bye

//Okay, babies, first of all:

We are all violating Mater’s copyright by having RP blogs. That is true. But unless you receive a C&D from Mater herself, you aren’t in any trouble.

i-want-my-iwtv can probably clear this up a bit more, as they have more knowledge of this.

But, as a fan who went through the entire “Oh God the fandom is gone because our writer is Some Crazy Bitch Who Sues Her Fans” thing, I’m pretty sure that a random person sending you fan mail doesn’t mean you are going to jail. Tumblr will delete your blog before that happens.

Anyone want to correct me on this?

People Off the Page:

I’m looking into this. I have no idea if it’s legit or not, whether that was a real Cease & Desist message Lestatdelight received. I’m researching it.

Fairly certain that everything devilsfool wrote above is correct. Tumblr can pull your blog at the request of the copyright holder. You’re not going to jail. If it’s a legit C&D, all they want is the material removed. Little do they realize that it’s been reblogged all over the damn place and downloaded, and copied and pasted into documents offline, there IS NO COMPLETE REMOVAL of a blog’s output!

I happen to care immensely about the issues of copyright, fair use, intellectual property, etc. and also about the rights of fanartists to make fanworks. Because I adore fanworks. Because I adore the fandom who creates and enjoys fanworks.

And because I make fanworks, too. If this is legit I’m actually surprised they didn’t go after me first, this blog is far more offensive than lestatdelight’s. Anyone who knows this person, please help me get in touch with them so I can get more info about the whole situation from them. If anyone receives messages like that one, requesting you take down your blog, let me know because:

We need to know if this is going to spread to all the VC RPs and fandom blogs.

Save things that you want to save. My blog is not immune. Download whatever you want, I may not be able to give warning before it’s taken down.

In the event that my blog is ever taken down, look for the tag #iwantmyiwtvRIP *cries*

What kind of poetry do the VC vampires like? Vampires like Lestat, Armand, Louis, and Marius. Or any other vampires you want to add. Which poet are they fans of?

image

[text from here] [devilsfool helped me w/ this answer]

I am actually a terrible resource for this question bc I… *gasp* do not really ‘get’ a lot of poetry! I only really like a few poets… like Shel Silverstein (he can be very adult and subversive, btw), Dr. Seuss (who tucked the richness of political/other messages into his works), and other “children’s” authors

yes don’t even think of mocking me on that ok i like what i like, and tbh I headcanon that Lestat has a passion for these, too, since he never got bedtime stories with illustrations as a child (and it’s why he read bedtime stories/poetry to Claudia well beyond the time when she could read to herself bc he loved impressing her with acting out the voices).

  • HOWEVER. I do love me some Shakespeare, and I think that counts as poetry, and Lestat loves him some Shakespeare, too. That’s canon. He mentions Keats in TOBT as he’s refurbishing the Rue Royale “Ah, wasn’t  it the ode by Keats which had inspired that long-ago purchase? Where  had the urn gone?” He also mentions Milton in that book. IDK if he read them but he came into possession of a collection of poetry by Wynken de Wilde in MtD.
  • Book-IWTV!Lestat is not wild about books of poetry, ditching Louis one night with a cruel little snap: “Read your damn poems, then! Rot!”
  • Lestat also considers music lyrics to “count” as poetry and might get all excited about a new track by Kanye WestEminem or Macklemore. I think he’d be especially drawn to freestyle rap battles.
  • Louis quotes from Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, so I would assume he liked (at least at that time) that kind of story/poetry: macabre, dealing with religion v. nature undertones
  • I see Marius as liking the quirky poetry in the New Yorker, and Stan Rice’s free-form style, as he likes to study emerging trends in thoughts.
  • David Talbot likes Blake, the Tyger features in his… trajectory, shall we say.

…The rest I leave up to annabellioncourt,

devilsfool, fyeahgothicromance, gothiccharmschool, and duendology, who are probably better resources on this topic. Oh, and of course, anyone else who sees this and has an opinion please feel free to reblog/comment ;D

Sorry if this is too personal, but i’m very curious… did Louis always like giving/receiving oral sex, or was it something you gradually introduced into the mix? I’m asking bc my SO is very similar to Louis and not very experienced with it, but wants to try, so I need advice on how to make that happen without being too pushy.

devilsfool:

First of all, let it be known loud and clear that I am not willing to speak openly about my sex life with Louis, if only for fear of it coming to a screeching halt for my lack of respect to his privacy. So I’m not going to talk about Louis and what predilections he may or may not have towards oral sex.

That being said, you should know that any reticence towards oral sex in our relationship has never come from Louis, but from me.

I have a complicated relationship with oral sex, for reasons I won’t go into. But what you should know in regards to your Significant Other is this:

Do they want to do it? If so, be patient. It will happen with time.

Do they love you? Then be patient. Be encouraging. Be kind.

Someone who is “shy” about giving/receiving oral sex has a reason, and that reason is probably psychological. While it isn’t necessarily your job to dig into those psychoses, it is your job as their lover and better half to know and understand what they may be, and to be with them as they traverse the complicated path of their past/fears/baggage.

Again, I say, be patient. Be their lover in every sense of the word.

The most patient man in the world held my hand in the rediscovery of the world of physical love, and I owe him far more than he will ever truly know.

And, not to brag, but his patience paid off. In spades.

Rumor: You have my red velvet cloak in one of your storage rooms.

Confirmed.  It’ll likely stay in storage too because none of us are flamboyant enough to pull off trying to wear it.

Who Wore It Best?  The Vampire Lestat or this Disturbing Lady Mannequin?

Poll Results:

The Vampire Lestat:   60%

Disturbing Lady Mannequin: 2%

“Why Are You Showing Me This Picture?”: 38%

You and I both are well aware that is not my cloak. No one dyed the wolf fur red. Don’t show me classics from Liberace’s closet (who, by the way–was he actually mortal and is he actually still alive?).

But I assume the statement is true. Has it dry-rotted by now, or has it been preserved?

Everything is preserved.  Our Archives are fitted similarly to many museums, with temperature controls and limited exposure to handling for items that time has rendered fragile.  Fabric is infamously weak to mishandling.  Your cloak, however, has managed to endure well within its containment.

With the advancement of technologies, we have updated our facilities to a superior level of Preservation Storage.  So your cloak might very well exist for another century or two.

☤ why would you even go to a hospital?? Also have u had blood from a blood bag and is it the same as fresh? Can u microwave it or does it get all yucky and congealey?

devilsfool:

☤:the last time my muse went to the hospital and why

First of all, I would never drink blood from a blood bag. It is not fresh. That, my friends, no matter how the hospitals may spin it for you mortals, is dead blood. And I’m not drinking dead blood. Not on your goddamn life. I’ve done it once or twice in my immortality–and that was one or two times far too many.

You need to understand that dead blood… It’s like if someone gave you rotten vegetables, I suppose, or meat that has almost turned. Sure, you can find a way to eat it, and sure, you probably won’t die–you may get a stomach ache, or feel nauseous–and sure, it will keep you alive. But it isn’t going to be a pleasant experience.

But the last time I was at the hospital?

Last Tuesday, actually. The young woman who lives down the block from us collapsed on her bike outside at approx. 3am–since we were sitting on the balcony, we heard and saw it happen. Taking her there myself was far faster than calling the paramedics, so that was what I did.

If you feel the urge to call me ‘hero,’ I won’t object.

-smile-

Hi there, what are 5 things you like most about Louis?

I’m limited to just 5 things? There are countless things I adore about Louis, not merely “like,” as especially overused as the word “like” is these days *grumbles*

1. His manner of speaking and word choice always… has a dignity to it. It’s something he’s always had, but I would think it’s reinforced by the kinds of books he’s absorbed over the years.

2. His hands, the long fingers, shapely nails, the sight of his hands on my body, the nails clawing at my skin, it’s tantalizing. During the time we lived together with Claudia, I would watch across the room, I yearned for those hands, helping her with shoe laces or gloves. His hands still have a forbidden-fruit aura.

3. He tastes like home. Is there another way to describe it? Skin, tears, blood, he is my favorite flavor *grins*

4. The picture we cut when I catch our reflection in glass. Whether he lets me dress him or not, with his arm hooked in mine, at a brisk pace, we compliment each other.

5. His capacity to love me not only despite my flaws, but his patience to help me overcome them, the care he took when I first awoke from a long and miserable nightmare of a coma, even when I was nothing near like myself except in appearance… although I insisted I was fine, he could always see the broken parts of me and sought to help me mend them.

Dieu but what would he say about me? I don’t deserve him, do I? *sighs*

(//BTW devilsfool answered these, too! I like their answers as well)

Free Pass: So. Was it really the blood of Christ, or were we both mad?

moral-cipher:

Oh Lestat.

I don’t know. I still think about it, perhaps more frequently than you imagine. The things I saw in the blood, the things I felt… the awe and the terror. At the time, I believed it may have been real. That having tried to enter the holy of holies and see for myself, I’d been found wanting, and cast aside.

Now… I’m not so sure. It seems hubristic, doesn’t it? To think that such powers would interfere with us? I think that whatever it was that could create such spectacles, could remove you entirely from our ability to sense your presence in the world, it had power, immense power. And perhaps, after all, the being that sought you out was the Devil – I mean to say perhaps it was the entity which through its dealings with man had inspired the idea of the Devil, thousands of years ago. But God? Heaven? Christ?

Call me the puritan fool if you will, but if such divinity exists, I distrust the idea that beings such as ourselves would merit its attention.
