Hello! I’m hoping you are well. I just want to say I love your blunt/possitive posts about fiction not being reality, personal responsibility, authors’ responsibility if it even applies…just all of it. Really, major kudos to you for being so blunt!

Aw thank you! Yes, I am doing well. Hope you’re doing well, too. I took a decent break from tumblr, and now I’m getting back into the swing of things, there are fanworks to reblog here ❤ and I have my own fic ideas percolating.

(I’m sorry that this response got kind of long, there are things in here I’ve expressed before, and some I may not have, or haven’t mentioned in awhile, and I kind of want to have these things out there for ppl to see where I’m coming from.)

Your message really means a lot, bc I feel like, if I have any responsibility to the fandom as a somewhat popular blog, that I have to stand up for shippers and creators of fanworks. Fanworks are the lifeblood of the fandom, both for the creators and the consumers. Fanworks are made for free (or on commission) by smaller creators who need the encouragement more. Being smaller and more accessible, they’re also easy & more responsive targets for harassment than the published creators 😛

And so when you see it from that perspective, you can understand that when I reblog those fiction =/= reality, pro-shipping, and anti anti posts, it’s coming from a place of good intention. I identify with those easy targets who are criticized for their creation/consumption of published works and fanworks. I was bullied for pretty superficial reasons in my formative years, not an unusual amount/degree of bullying, but it hurt. “Oh, but words can’t hurt you!” <– this is pretty insensitive, and I shouldn’t have to convince anyone that bullying is painful, but there are those who would compare injuries and say that being bullied was less suffering compared to other things (like abuse, PTSD, mental illness, etc.), and therefore invalid. Should we be comparing injuries to validate ownership to fiction? I don’t know, but the bullying was real to me and it hurt.

And this part of the story is my own attachment to canon (and, later, fandom), before I was even aware of others. Do we sever our attachment to something bc smne else says that their connection to it is more valid? I feel like fandom is limitless, it’s big enough for all of us.

Media/Fiction was an escape from reality for me. It was a place I could find inspiration, could see characters beaten down (by antagonists and/or their own faults) and rise up again and again, in so many variations! Even the same plot points can yield different emotions when told in different ways, and/or involving different characters. Characters refusing to lay down and submit to their obstacles/antagonists was inspiring and helped me rebuild the self-confidence the bullies had crushed.

So that was my story, as valid as any. I love stories of how ppl got into VC (or any fandoms/media really!), and there are so many. I don’t think that any reason is more valid than any other.

  • There are those who saw themselves reflected in the fact that there are queer/LGBT+ characters, that they existed and had depth and could love and be loved in return.
  • Someone told me that they shared a love of history with their father, especially of Rome. The father passed away when the person was young, and so they loved the historical explorations in canon, it seemed to bring them closer to that lost parent. In fact, the act of pointing out historical inaccuracies in canon was enjoyable to this person.
  • There are those who passionately adore Armand, for all his beauty, strength, and sass, the fact that he is a survivor of so much tragedy. “We must be beautiful, powerful, and without regret.”
  • There are those who love the quiet and dignified manner of Louis and how he burns everything down handles situations.
  • There are those who live for the ~purple prose~ and ~wealth porn~, in the loving descriptions of luxury, the declarations of love and 3 pages of describing how pretty a character is.
  • … etc. etc.

^And fanworks based on the media consumed may relate to the fans’ reasons for getting into that fandom in the first place. I like to think my memes and fanfic show the same refusal to quit that I valued so much in the characters when I read canon. I would think that other writers/artists/etc. would say smtg similar, that their fanworks are their way of engaging with canon, whether it’s to have more of what they enjoy about it, fix and/or explore a character/ship/situation, or take the characters into different situations (like AU) and see how they might fare within changed parameters. Ppl analyze canon and critique it, comparing it to other fiction/non-fiction to lay out their ideas. Ppl might want to dress like the characters and act like them in cosplay! So many ways to engage with canon. And then you have comments on works and works inspired by fanworks and that’s p. much the definition of fandom, to my mind.

HOWEVER.

In my zeal for reblogging posts (and writing my own) about defending shippers and creators/consumers of published media and fanworks, I can be too blunt, and unintentionally injure others. I trust ppl to inform me privately if a post goes over the line in that regard, and I have responded by editing/deleting posts. This blog isn’t sacred, editing/deleting a post is not a sign of weakness, but of curating it to better serve my needs and those who come to it for whatever reason.

Bc my blog really is at its core about entertainment and encouragement/sharing of fanworks.

It’s hard for me to sit in silence about attacks on shippers and creators/consumers of published media and fanworks

when I feel like if I don’t speak up, silence is tacit agreement when ppl state, “Don’t draw/write/talk about X bc it is harmful to Y” I understand that some ppl do have real triggers and some fictional characters/ships are painful to them, but on the other hand, is it fair to restrict everyone else who wants to explore those characters/ships?

We have to find ways to coexist, and that may mean everyone taking on some responsibility for their fandom experience and extending respect towards others. Someone asked me to tag a certain ship, and now I do, so that they can block it. I can’t tag every possible thing, but within reason, I will add tags on request.

I don’t believe in censorship when it comes to fiction, for many reasons, there are blogs out there who are much more eloquent than I am in their defense of it. I don’t have their rhetoric. But I feel like I need to defend those who are easy targets for bullying (as I had been).

^^^With all that said, I think it would be best for me to refrain from too much of this type of posting so as not to trample others. Instead, I want to focus on encouraging fanworks, reblogging posts about writing/art and advice about that.

(If you are looking for more blogs that defend fanfiction, I can recommend more to you privately, or in a separate post.)

I’m sorry but it’s really annoying to see this keep happening on my dash. For those who don’t know,Pixiv is considering shutting down access to western users.

Why?

Because of edits and reposts onto social media sights, such as Tumblr, Facebook, even Twitter. The problem has been here for the past months and I really just get sad seeing everyone reblog edits and reposts of art that’sUNSOURCED.

I’m sorry if I seem bitchy, but this is a critical issue, because not only would this cut off fandom posters, it cuts off any person in the US from accessing Pixiv.

Pixiv artists are already deleting their works and accounts, more and more artists are deleting everything because of this. I have alreadymade a post about this on my main,  and so havetwo ofmy friends. You may say we’re throwing a big deal about this, but the thing is- we’re just trying to make sure that us fans and future fans have the art resources.

Things to know:

Oh, and biggest thing for the Vocaloid fandom mainly, along with other fandoms:

this is a list of pixiv artists who do not want their art reposted or edited at all.

If you ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO REPOST THEIR WORK, ASK THEM FIRST! It won’t hurt you to be polite, and even if they don’t understand english they probably will understand what you’re saying.

I find this very relevant to this blog so I hope you’ll allow me to give another PSA.

(Thank you endless-chocolate for sending me this link)

I see this happen on my dash sometimes and I’m not gonna lie, I did consider unfollowing the people that reblog unsourced fanarts. Especially more so on those so-called one piece confessions/dirty op confessions whatever. It’s getting ridiculous.

However, it’s my belief that every one of you are wonderful people who respects others, especially those who have worked hard in drawing and writing all the wonderful doujins and fanarts. So I hope I can raise some more awareness to this.

As usual I’m going to illustrate it in an easy way. (read right to left)

What you’re making the artist do:

image

Every artist grow by displaying their work and getting critique. But when their work is spread around without any credit to the artist, AND EVEN MAKES THE OWN ARTIST DELETE IT FROM HIS/HER SITE it lost the purpose and meaning.

What you should do from now on (if you haven’t been doing so):

Here’s a guide on how to use saucenao. If it’s from pixiv, saucenao will most likely find it. If it doesn’t, use google image search.

If an artist spend their time to draw that fanart, I think we can spend a bit of time finding out the proper source/credit.

This has been another PSA from Dark Honey.

cant stress enough about this topic, please source everyone

I am proud to be raising awareness of this serious issue!

Please spread this around so less and less of a problem will continue!

u ever think?? About??????

anything??? just once??

[X @dopeybeauty]

I’ve been thinking about this a lot but i would LOVE Lestat as Hedwig (from Hedwig and the Angry Inch)?? Maybe as some kind off broadway production or even just conceptually. Theres a lot of parallels that can be drawn between the two and i just think itd be a perfect fit for him. If you’re familar with Hedwig I’d love to hear any thoughts you (or anyone) have on this!

You know, the first thing that comes to mind is that I would think that the Lestat musical could have been (and maybe the producers originally wanted it to be) as glamorous, heartbreaking, dramatic, and beautiful as the Hedwig stage production! But for many reasons, it wasn’t :-

I’ve seen the Hedwig movie several times and I love it, I also saw the stage production when the original Hedwig actor, John Cameron Mitchell, came back to do it again (2015, I think?). It was updated with more current references (Grindr or Tinder were mentioned), it was hilarious and angsty and Lestat would have loved to see it, if not be in it! ;D

But I also feel that there are many sensitive topics here. A major one being the gender issues, a very big element in Hedwig, and as I am not well-informed on the subject, I don’t feel that it’s appropriate for me to address it too much, but I’ll open this to anyone in the comments/reblogs on that.

As characters, yes, a lot of parallels can be drawn between Hedwig and Lestat, an essay could be written about that, I’ll open this to anyone in the comments/reblogs on that, too.

TL;DR: As this is a fandom blog for entertainment I’ll just say that Lestat’s an actor at heart and I think the role of Hedwig would be a challenge he’d love to tackle, for all the sensitive topics and for how much he would

probably relate to Hedwig’s story.

Sooo many good quotes that I think Lestat would find relatable:

  • Love the front of me, honey! – bc it’s Hedwig’s damage in the front. Lestat would be talking about his own damage (in the varying ways it manifests depending on your headcanon).
  • Eve just wanted to know shit.
  • The road is my home, and my home, the road. And when I think of all the people I have come upon in my travels, I cannot help but think of the people who have come upon me. Tommy, can you hear me? From this milkless tit you have sucked the very business we call show!
  • I have been having the most wonderful time with – do you remember that 45-year-old divorcee with the hair and the mean look? She came up to me after the show and I thought, “This lady wants a piece of me.” So I didn’t know what to do. I was alone, I had nothing in my hand, I was going to go for the eyes. She came at me from both sides, somehow, and she just gave me a fucking hug. She gave me a fucking hug. Can you figure? Can you fucking beat that? She gave me – also got a few drinks from it, as well.

I think the Origin of Love song works for both of them, too…

HEY KIDS let’s talk about metal okay.

Anyway so I shout into the void about metal sometimes, even though I fully realize I’m like the lone fandom metalhead LOL. I mean @finnishdoomster is around too LOL there’s a couple of us but it’s mostly pretty lonely.

but like fuckit I do what I want TODAY I’M GONNA TALK ABOUT:

BLACK METAL SONGS THAT REMIND ME OF MARIUS DE ROMANUS.

The thing about Marius + metal whenever I think about it is that I’m always thinking about how butthurt he was that Botticelli went dark, how disappointed he was. I’m of the opinion that Marius white-knuckles his way through immortality; that he represses his own anger until it reaches boiling points and he does stupid shit, and I think part of it was his refusal to admit to his own flaws, his own loneliness, his own desperation.

So like, on one hand I think he would see the subculture and find the metalheads adorable, like cute little humans acting all tough and scary. but I think he’d also appreciate that metal subculture is built around the idea of feeling alienated, being different, and embracing all the things that make us weird because we aren’t buying into all the bullshit that’s fed to us. Metalheads are philosophers and outsiders and are, by nature, creative people. They think differently and don’t try to deny it. And you don’t become a metalhead without being passionate, without caring about metal, because all the good metal is hiding from you and it’s a process to find it.

On the other hand I imagine that this music might be too much, too raw, too painful to listen to, just too fucking real. I can’t imagine him or any other ancient hearing some of these albums and not being totally traumatized.

I think black metal is an acquired taste for some—not everyone is gonna get it right away—but the thing about it is that it’s so cerebral to listen to, it’s such an experience, and when you click with it you just connect on such a deep level, and it just shreds you.

I listen to a lot of fucking music, okay? And I just. I don’t think anything really captures the darkness the way black metal does. Especially the more melodic black metal, especially when it gets a little epic, maybe has some orchestral parts. It’s such an incredible blend of being worldly and majestic with the emptiness and the desperation. There’s really nothing like it.

And I tend to feel, out of all the metal vocal styles, that the signature black metal vocal style sounds so much more like genuine pain than any other subgenre. Like death metal styles sound so much more aggressive and black metal just always strikes me as really meaning it.

And it specifically reminds me of Marius more than anyone else. It’s partly because I’m a fangirl (oops) but also just the very nature of his life, and I find B&G so haunting. He’s the only ancient we’ve really gotten to spend so much time with and it’s so chilling to hear him really own his age, discuss how much he’s seen, the eras he’s lived through. And his book is characterized by loss, time and time again, of people in his life, cities he’s loved, his sense of belonging anywhere. I just feel it heavily and poignantly in a lot of this music.

It’s not just the loss and pain, though, but in black metal that you can hear the abject evil and idk about you guys but it’s something that just inflames everything in me that is capable of feeling passion. It’s so incredibly dark and terrifying and seductive to me and if that doesn’t click into place with how I feel about these goddamn vampires, idk what.

There’s also the trend in black metal, especially blackened folk metal and melodic black metal, for the bands to incorporate traditional instruments from their heritage. It’s such an interesting blend of sounds but also, in this instance!, adds sort of a historical texture to the music in a lot of ways, which makes it an easy motif for me to hang onto.

And I can’t speak for the authenticity of the use of any of these instruments but again I find myself thinking: If Marius heard this, would he be totally shook? Imagine this brutally raw, pained music brought to life with an instrument he hasn’t heard in hundreds of years.

What was the music like at the grove?

(BONUS SONG:  Krigsgaldr by Heilung! I will concede that Heilung isn’t metal but black metal fans jizz their pants over this shit and like he’s got that scratchy black metal thing going on and this is just too good not to include cause it fits right in. FUN FACT, since I already talk about Wardruna + VC too much I’ll just casually remind you that Wardruna is black metal dudes. But check out HEILUNG also cause this is like all the spooky folk sounds without the obvious metal. METALHEADS LOVE THIS LOL.)

One of my favorite lines in the entire series is when Marius refers to “the cold and fatal domain” of his soul. Just. Fuck dude.

IS THERE ANYTHING MORE COLD AND FATAL THAN FUCKIN BLACK METAL???? Like “Cold and Fatal Domain” legit sounds like it should be the name of someone’s album.

LIKE, DID U KNO? One of the popular lyrical themes in black metal is the chaos of nature? SORTA LIKE THE SAVAGE GARDEN? Immortal, for example? Half their fuckin songs are just about snowy dark icy mountains and how cold it is in Norway. They have a song called Grim & Frostbitten Kingdoms! Sounds like some Cold & Fatal Domains! (Also LMAO they’re called Immortal. Appropriate.)

(AT THIS POINT I TRIED TO EMBED ANTARCTICA BY IMMORTAL BUT TUMBLR TOLD ME I WAS GETTING TOO WILD.)

I don’t really know where I’m going with any of this and I don’t have a graceful way to exit but. I just wanted to share that with you. If you’re feeling adventurous and want to give a new genre a try, do it. 😀 I didn’t pick any SUPER intense songs, these are good beginner songs, so if you want some icy dark vampire pain knock yaself out.

Sigh, I’m so weepy now LMAO.

Super hyped about New Book News™ :D Weirdly enough, the English amazon has a very different summary – something about an attack on the court and Lestat having to hunt down the vamps who did it; sounds like they’re being led by Rhosh

(sorry for the delay in reply!)

I’m the way I always was about every new VC book: cautiously optimistic, there may be some great stuff in it, if not, it’s still going to be a Wild Ride as per usual!

Yes, you’re right, the descriptions are a little different, and idk who has control over that. I’m guessing it’s not the author *shrugs*

The U.S. description was more about Lestat still wrangling all the vampires into some kind of monarchy/democracy government and then:

… against his will, he must battle the menacing, seemingly unstoppable force determined to thwart his vision and destroy the entire vampire netherworld.

What now with this ‘unstoppable force’? I thought we already extracted Amel, he was specifically the ‘force’ pestering everybody and tryna start shit!

…and tells the riveting story of the formation of the Blood Communion and how he became Prince of the vampire world, the true ruler of this vast force,

What is ‘the Blood Communion’ is this going to be a blood orgy oh gawds… are all the vampires a ‘vast force’ now, or is he getting YET ANOTHER super power? Weather control and/or lightning, like Thor now?? *ragged sigh*

…and then of his fierce battle of wits and words with the mysterious Rhoshamandes…

Rhoshamandes, a force who refuses to live in harmony at the Court of Prince Lestat and threatens all that Lestat has dreamt of.

Ok, yes, a vampire civil war good BRING IT ON. Hopefully he gets some allies to even it up and make it a fair fight.

….As the tale unfolds, Lestat takes us from blah blah blah France to

blah blah blah

Louisiana

blah blah blah; from

blah blah

the Pacific’s untouched islands to the 18th-century city of St. Petersburg and the court of the Empress Catherine …”

^I’m guessing this last bit re: Empress Catherine will be us sitting down to hear more of Rhoshamandes’ story, we’ll see.

Amazon U.K.’s description we get a little more specific:

From blah blah blah France, Prince Lestat is grappling to instil a new ideology of peace and harmony among the blood-drinking community.

So no blood orgy mentioned ok, but…

Accustomed to welcoming all of the Undead – from far and wide – into his court, one night he awakes to news of a ruthless attack by a group of maverick blood-drinkers.

^THERE’S A GROUP OF THEM who attack. What would it take to attack a compound designed by vampires to be the safest place for them and teeming with vampires capable of telepathic gifts, a species that is always out for its own protection?

After fleeing to investigate the terror, Lestat learns of several new enemies who despise his rule over the blood-drinking realm, and who are intent on disrupting the harmony he tries so hard to maintain.

GOOD I’m glad the attackers have a group, it’s not just Everybody-Hates-Rhoshamandes on his own, that’d be kind of unfair.

One enemy in particular, the infamous Rhoshamandes, is notoriously powerful. But is Lestat strong enough to take on such evil alone or will sacrifices have to be made?

^SACRIFICES – makes me think a few of the old crew have been taken prisoner or have switched sides? IDK.

Then again, I do think there are enough new characters added in PL/ROA to be used specifically as canon fodder.

Will his cry for peace be heard in a world riddled with violence?

No. Honestly this is a pile of serial killers, murder is what they DO. And then, some ppl just want to watch the world burn, even if peace is offered and on the table.

An enthralling, sweeping adventure, full of drama and suspense, Blood Communion will have readers gripped to the very end. It is not just a compelling tale of a troubled leader, but a novel about the power of ambition, as well as a timely reflection on the struggle of individuals to find and defend their place in the world.

I think it is definitely timely, he is a troubled leader, and I think it’s got the potential to be very good the way Queen of the Damned was good.
