quick thought before bed but when it comes to wank in a book fandom of all places maybe yall can be a little gentler on people who aren’t native english speakers? i guess if your whole role in a fandom is to be a jerkoff to everyone maybe you don’t take the time to get to know everybody and maybe it doesn’t occur to you that between the language barrier or whatever whacky translation they’re reading maybe they perceived the text differently????? we don’t all have the same access or experiences.
just an idea.
be fucking nice!
What happened to “treat others as you would be treated”? Oh, when you can trample someone else for thought crimes, including holding a different interpretation than yours. Right.
It usually has a lot to do with liking the characters and thinking that despite anything or everything they would be good together. Sometimes it could be because of character design and aesthetic for ships like Jelsa.
They don’t exist in the same universe but there is something appealing about these two meeting and making a connection based on their individual personalities and their experiences.
Then there are ships where people literally just want the characters to fuck or use them for a kink. When I think about a ship that seems to be mostly about kink then I usually think about a ship like Kylux for example.
It’s a lot of hate fucking from what I’ve seen which is fine, Do you and yes I could be misinterpreting why people ship this but based on the art it feels very smut fueled. Kink ships are fine because it’s a safe exploration of your sexuality without involving yourself or any real people. It’s honestly the safest place in the world because you can always walk away.
Then some ships are about the relationship they could have or already have. Think something some established in canon and just taking it to a more romantic angle. Think the really good friends trope that evolves into something more. Think characters that would take very little to picture them dating.
Usually I think a series like Free! Because these two just have such a good relationship it doesn’t take any stretch of the imagination to picture them dating. Hell even Sheith fits this trope because they do have an amazing relationship and it really wouldn’t be difficult to imagine. Honestly I doubt Sheith shippers even considered the age gap until antis brought it up. I always thought Shiro looked 21 and Keith looks 18/19 and honestly because it’s fiction it doesn’t matter what the writers say. You can make them mer people and take them out of space because fiction has no limits.
Shipping is and always has been about the possibility of what the relationship could be like. For example Reylo is a ship about the possibility, How would Rey and Kylo look if he had switched sides and joined the resistance? What would have changed had Rey become the Dark Queen. Could these broken characters heal each other? Reylo has posed questions since it’s inception in Force Awakens.
Reylo shippers seem to enjoy a bit of drama and they like those what ifs. Some people just like to imagine every possibility for characters that are so opposite and yet so similar. The enemies to lovers ship is popular because it’s interesting as hell and again fiction is the safest place to explore that.
Then you have shippers who ship because they like a sweet love story. Team Fluff if you will and they sometimes chill with the friendship shippers. These characters care about each other in canon and they would without a doubt have a good relationship that maybe people should want for themselves. I’d say FinnRey fits that boat perfectly because they would without a doubt have a good relationship.
There could be some drama and comedy but it’s fairly straight forward. Some people even like these ships for the self insert aspect of it. Rey for as much as I love her tends to become a voice box for the fans at times and honestly she was written as a Star Wars fan so it makes sense that it’s easy to project yourself into a character already kinda like yourself.
Shipping honestly is supposed to be fun. A lot of people multi ship and for each ship they have it usually just comes down to them liking the characters. Very few people go looking for age gaps or any of that “problematic” shit antis are screaming about. They mostly just ship because they like the characters. Usually the age and even the canon relationship is incidental. That’s why we have fanfiction. Say those characters are related but what if they weren’t? What if Finn stayed a stormtrooper and met Rey in the interrogation room? What if they were dating? What would that look like?
The idea of policing probably the most harmless thing online is strange to me. Why would anyone care if that person likes these characters together? A lot of the time it’s really not that deep. The 20 year olds on this site still shipping teenagers don’t have any insidious desire to fuck teens. They probably have been shipping since they were teens and happen to like the characters.
Any way this was my long ass post on why I think people ship. Feel free to add to it and say why you ship.
I Do Not Trust Anyone Who Says ‘Let People Ship What They Want’ I Simply Do Not Trust Them And With Good Reason
What it should mean: “weird” but otherwise decent
What everyone usually means: pedophillia/incest/abuse/etc
No. It means Ship What You Want Because We’re Supposed To Be Adults Here With Free Will and Freedom of Thought and Speech Able of Critical Thinking, and If You’re Not Able to Comprehend That Maybe You Shouldn’t Be Here In The First Place. Ask Some Adult To Monitor Your Use of the Internet I Think You Should Not Be Here On Your Own.
Shipping Harms Absolutely No-One and You Should Mind Your Own Puritanical Narrow-Minded WitchHunting Business. You Don’t Get To Dictate What Other People Do In Their Spare Time, Not To Mention You Are Helping No-One and You’re Actually Diluting The Real Meaning of The Words Paedophilia, Incest, and Abuse, While Making This Place Unwelcoming and Unhealthy and Hostile To People Who Want to Explore Their Sexuality and Their Identity and Maybe Their Trauma in a Safe Way.
I Do Not Like People Who Think They Get To Police Other People’s Hobbies and Passions With Damn Good Reason. They Harm Real People and They Are A Blight To Fandom. They Prey on the Weakest and Most Vulnerable In the Small Corner We Have Managed To Make for Ourselves. They Are Bullies.
I Ship What I Fucking Want, and I do not owe anyone explanations or justification.
The Addams family was, in fact, both magical and supernatural for its depiction of a healthy, loving, supportive, and fun married m/f couple.
This is now officially an Addams family appreciation post
In order to depict such purity and love in a m/f relationship, one must first set the foundation that these people are odd and not the norm. (per media standards)
They cared about their children, their children’s interests, and wanted the kids to always be true to themselves. How peculiar!
Gomez and Morticia never showed negative jealousy towards each other’s past love interests. Even going to far as complimenting them for being special to their true love. How bizarre!
They could forgive almost any character flaw in a friend or relative. The only thing that could not be forgiven was betrayals and pastels. Weird amirite?
Morticia is a woman’s woman. She allies herself with other women instead of competing with them. She even seeks to understand women different from herself and her beliefs. Strange.
Gomez wants Morticia to have whatever Morticia wants. He doesn’t give her permission, he actively supports her and motivates her. Fa-reaky.
Do you think this show was social commentary, stating that what we believe a normal life is is unattainable so long as we continue living life the way society expects, and when we live life the way we need to is when we live authentically despite what makes us different
Don’t hate-read. You know what I’m talking about. Are there blogs or people who automatically make you clench your jaw and roll your eyes? Or always trigger a reaction of “Oh dear angels and spirits, not them/this AGAIN?” Stop reading their stuff. Don’t seek it out, no matter how much ranty entertainment you feel it may be.
Hate-reading is a drain of your time and energy.
(Note: I am posting this as a REMINDER TO MYSELF, because I fall into that trap, too.)
past me: canon is sacred I must carefully fact-check everything to make sure it is canon-compliant
present me: canon is a box of scraps in a cave I’m gonna tear that shit apart throw away 90% of it and out of the good bits build something absolutely beautiful and amazing
