I needed a sufficiently intimidating audience to practice my conference speech about ancient art. I decided that an immortal Roman qualifies for the job š
While Iām flattered to be called the VC authority on Tumblr, Iāll accept it in just a tongue-in-cheeky way, bc if that were true, such a title would probably require real āadministrative duties,ā and other responsibilities that an Authority on smtg would have to perform.
My fave VC book is probably TVL, but I wouldnāt be here if not for IWTV, so they sort of go hand-in-hand for me. I hesitate to choose one over the other. IWTV had the elegant language, the dark ambiance, the existential angst that had a big impact on my own spirituality, and it had the beginnings of the Louis/Lestat chemistry.
But TVL edges forward bc it had the origin of their species story (a whole new take on vampire mythology!), it had more acts of love, more comedy and more charm and I fell for Lestat like falling down a flight of stairs ;D Not bc heās so damn pretty. For his refusal to quit, for how badly he fracks up but feels terrible for, and then keeps trying; for his insistence that there is so much thatās worth living for, that fascination can save him in the face of the meaningless emptiness out there.
-which ones do you think are necessary to read-
(I get this question in different variations every so often, itās under my #Order of Operations for VC tag, if you want more thoughts on that.)
I really think IWTV, TVL, and QOTD are necessary. Those books contain the core main characters and take the time to establish those characters. Later books will revisit some of the scenes from those books from different characterās POVs.
Some ppl write off TOBT as being too wacky and MtD as being too religious, TVA as being too Armand⦠and then the rest rapidly fall off the edge of what ppl consider canon at all because they introduce a bunch of new characters and storylines that the fandom has yet to fully embrace as canon (including the books AR herself does not currently accept as canon, the hybrid Mayfair/VC books).
Hit the jump for more, cut for length.
-and which ones would you say are the worst?-
Thatās up for debate and Iām sure for every book I mention I didnāt really like that much, thereās going to be a pile of ppl who loved it, as happens with the ones I liked and thereās a pile of ppl who donāt!
Under the cut are VC that I donāt feel added that much to the series other than being somewhat interesting diversions, and you can give them a chance and see what you think!
Vittorio – This is technically not a VC book, and he has a different origin story and is not part of the VC vampire group.
Blackwood Farm – This is mostly a story told to Lestat and heās not very invested in it, I donāt think many (any?) of the new characters introduced in this book make any more than a mention or brief appearance later on. It is also fairly cracky.
Blood Canticle – The last of the hybrid VC/Mayfair Witches novels, very cracky, AR has said herself that these hybrid novels did notĀ āwear wellā over time, and has stated that they are not part of the canon she continued with in PL and beyond.
Iāve been incredibly nostalgically feeling Vampire Chronicles lately since Iām reading Prince Lestat (which Iām actually enjoying & havenāt finished yet) and where there is VC feelings, there is feelings for Armand, the love of my life.
Itās nice to be able to draw him close to how I see him in my head. I didnāt have the tools to do that at 13.
this is a not a redo (since I still like the picture) but a tribute to the first Armand picture I ever posted here. that was a few days shy of two years ago, so hereās ya boy Armand ⦠your angle or yuor devilā¦..
I wouldnāt rate it good/bad/whatever, bc playlists and fanfic is subjective, you might not like what I like so hereās just SOME STUFF⦠Anyone is welcome to add/comment to this ā¤
*a writer I have the works of (about 30 total) and have permission to upload all of them but the pieces have to be in a specific order as they kind of relate to each other, and Iāve been unproductive in uploading the whole ouevre š but itās gonna happen bc one of their pieces is so great; it explores the night of Claudiaās 1st assassination attempt on Lestat from his POV and itās HEARTWRENCHING. So if those already posted get more interest/hits I will probably be more motivated to post the rest!
ooc; So, I finally pre-ordered PL & The Realms of Atlantis, and I just noticed the description on Barnes & Nobleās website.
āWhen any of the 12,000-year-old self-cloning aliens called Replimoids take center stage, there are interesting sparks. They soon fade, though, as Lestat and his confidants (and the reader) wait for anything to happen. But when Kapetria, who speaks for the Replimoids, begins to give real information to Lestat and members of his court about Amel and the Replimoidsā origins, the book finally catches fire. Initially, the concept of adding aliens to vampires, spirits, and witches is an eye roller, but Rice exhibits tremendous skill in making the impossible seem not only possible but logical.ā
I have literally been joking for two years that the next book would involve aliens vs. Lestat, because it feels like shitās gotten that insane
our first VC fanart on the net on early 2000s, so⦠well itās great to be still here and to keep finding people who loved our work. š Thank you!Ā
Dany&Dany are a fandom treasure ⤠So great to see them here on tumblr sharing their art, old and new *u*
