1. Headcanon is like an opinion is like an arse, everyone’s got their own.
2. Headcanon is in fact an interpretation, nothing more nothing less.
3. Don’t preach your headcanon as some universal truth.
4. All the three above apply to readers as well, not only rpers, of course.
Please don’t get upset if/when someone disagrees w/ your interpretation, just remember it’s about fictional characters, and not a personal attack. Even if the facts are from canon itself, some ppl may choose not to recognize some canon facts.
My fascination, my love for this character is against logic and basic survival instinct. It’s like this urge to pet a tiger because it’s such a beautiful animal. I mean, you know it will rip you into pieces and probably feast on your heart and meat, but you’re doing it anyway… you’re reaching your hand to touch this magnificent being, even if’s the last thing you’re about to do.
Curious why she wants to know. I mean, I can guess why…but hmm really?
Interesting; I actually have mixed feelings about her asking and about how far she should…
^Interesting little thread re: what People of the Page have responded to AR’s question.
IDK what I would want. Fanworks kinda satisfy me in ways canon hasn’t, especially in getting more of characters I wanted to hear about and exploring existing canon ships. I take every new VC book as AU fanfic and can pick and choose things from it to assimilate into my headcanon.
Today Facebook played “I know what you did last spring summer” and reminded me what I did on May 29th but 4 years ago. I am so grateful…
Ok and this is what I did. Honestly, I completely forgot about it. And yes, nothing has changed in this department…
BUT let’s make something clear…Tom Cruise was brilliant as Lestat. 😉
I reposted this status on my wall, because of course I got nostalgic and I am lestatized heavily. We had a lovely conversation with friends there.
It PAINS me that Rutger Hauer didn’t play Lestat back then. Just look at him, god damn. *thousand-yard stare*
^Agreed. VERY PAIN. Forever mourn that Rutger Hauer was too old when they were finally ready to make IWTV. The book came out in ‘76, and the movie languished in production hell until it finally started filming in ’93-’94 and like afg;huljl;!?kflifiimsfifghtl! *strangled anguish noises*
Travis Fimmel also has a lot of Lestatuesque potential in him… Even Stuart Townsend did the best he could with the trainwreck he was given (who do I blame his accent on? Probably the director). At least Townsend had the right build, I’ll give him that. It’s another tough thing to achieve; Lestat would have been athletically muscular from all the running and hunting in the Auvergne, and then the acrobatics in Paris. Not a bodybuilder level of muscular. Plus he was like 21, remember.
BUT! YES! let’s make something clear…Tom Cruise was brilliant as Lestat. 😉
“In the period of which we speak, there reigned in the cities a stench barely conceivable to us modern men and women. The streets stank of manure, the courtyards of urine, the stairwells stank of mouldering wood and rat droppings, the kitchens of spoiled cabbage and mutton fat; the unaired parlours stank of stale dust, the bedrooms of greasy sheets, damp featherbeds, and the pungently sweet aroma of chamber pots. The stench of sulphur rose from the chimneys, the stench of caustic lyes from the tanneries, and from the slaughterhouses came the stench of congealed blood. People stank of sweat and unwashed clothes; from their mouths came the stench of rotting teeth, from their bellies that of onions, and from their bodies, if they were no longer very young, came the stench of rancid cheese and sour milk and tumorous disease. The rivers stank, the marketplaces stank, the churches stank, it stank beneath the bridges and in the palaces. The peasant stank as did the priest, the apprentice as did his master’s wife, the whole of the aristocracy stank, even the king himself stank, stank like a rank lion, and the queen like an old goat, summer and winter. For in the eighteenth century there was nothing to hinder bacteria busy at decomposition, and so there was no human activity, either constructive or destructive, no manifestation of germinating or decaying life that was not accompanied by stench.
And of course the stench was foulest in Paris, for Paris was the largest city of France. And in turn there was a spot in Paris under the sway of a particularly fiendish stench: between the rue aux Fers and the rue de la Ferronnerie, the Cimetiere des Innocents to be exact. For eight hundred years the dead had been brought here from the Hotel–Dieu and from the surrounding parish churches, for eight hundred years, day in, day out, corpses by the dozens had been carted here and tossed into long ditches, stacked bone upon bone for eight hundred years in the tombs and charnel houses. Only later–on the eve of the Revolution, after several of the grave pits had caved in and the stench had driven the swollen graveyard’s neighbours to more than mere protest and to actual insurrection–was it finally closed and abandoned. Millions of bones and skulls were shovelled into the catacombs of Montmartre and in its place a food market was erected.”
~Patrick Süskind “The Perfume. The Story of a Murderer”
even the king himself stank, stank like a rank lion
Am I the only one who saw Lestat, Louis, and Claudia in that “One Unfulfilled Idea of Family” in Hannibal, Will, and Abigail? Or am I just one of those helpless cases of VCians who can easily find reference to VC just anywhere and everywhere? 0_o
It’s definitely not just you. I know I’ve talked to adirotynd and wicked-felina about this very phenomenon. There’s a hell of a lot of common ground between the VC and Hannibal: perverse yet more-intense-than-anything-ever intimacy based on mutual experience of (committing) violence; heightened sensuality; a fine line between black comedy and high-flown philosophy… and then of course Hannibal is in itself a fanfic-like remix of the Thomas Harris canon, which is interesting to look at, considering the fanon that has grown up around the VC over the years.
I was surprised-yet-not-surprised when I found out that Bryan Fuller was a huge IWTV fan growing up – there’s a Nerdist podcast in which he describes how, at the age of 13, he phoned Anne Rice because he wanted to work on the IWTV screenplay. The story is a gem and starts about 32 minutes in, but the whole thing is really great:
Edit: basically what I’m saying is, if you’re a VC fan who can handle looking at gore, there is a very good chance that Hannibal will be right up your street. Meanwhile, if you are a Hannibal fan who enjoys historical settings and can cope with a canon that gets increasingly bizarre as the series progresses, you might find a happy home in VC fandom. Hey, I like to matchmake.
Now I just had this thought. Or a vision without revelation as the line goes… Wait, not a thought, a familiar character. It was Lestat from Interview with the Vampire. He was mean as fuck and cruel even more. I saw him feeding on one of these “lovelies” who justified and absolved him of all his monstrosity because such big and forgiving is the love of a fan, who sees him and understands him… And in this weird vision he was not like James Bond of all vampires, no. He was no Prince either. He was Hannibal Lecter of all vampires….
And I liked that….
And the thing is, it’s as likely as anything else. In QotD Lestat tells us his fantasy of visiting that fan, but the fact he stops before the end allows him to seduce the reader without having to complicate the story with a disturbing ending. In TVL and TTotBT, though, we see him feed on innocence and love it. I think you hit on a very important truth in this idea that Lestat could just as easily bury himself in a fan’s forgiving love – after all, when he does terrible things, he’s counting on the forgiveness and forbearance of those around him (and sometimes, like when he burns Louis’s shack and Marius is Not Amused, it goes very wrong)…
Mmm, yes. One more thing I’d like to add. Let’s forget for a moment it’s a piece of fiction, and so is vampire. Fans tend to forgive Lestat almost everything because he’s Lestat. No? Even the fact he’s a vampire is viewed as his asset and certainly adds much to the general appeal of this character. From the literary point of view, because it’s vampire/horror (supposedly) genre too, it’s understandable. And the irony is we should stand wary, skeptical, and cautious when faced with the creature that, yes, it feels, thinks, sings and dances too, and used to be human even, but the bottom line is… the creature eats us, it’s a serial killer. I find it fascinating. Interestingly enough, Lestat himself in TOTBT warns us not to trust him, not to fall for the image he created himself of himself in his books. He is a killer. His words are smooth, but he’s a killer… I’ve never forgotten that. It’s a subtle yet most powerful warning ever, yet it seems a reader can’t refuse the general romanticism of the books and characters, and of the way the vampires philosophize about the world and humanity, so – one by one – readers are seduced, sometimes against the human basic survival instinct. And yes, it’s fiction, it’s a seduction readers can allow themselves. Yet, there’s a deeper thing to consider and it’s this general notion or belief that someone who speaks so beautifully and feels so much can’t do me harm, right? *winks*
So, yes, thank you, Lestat, for teaching me one of the most important lessons in and about life…
“And the irony is we should stand wary, skeptical, and cautious when faced with the creature that, yes, it feels, thinks, sings and dances too, and used to be human even, but the bottom line is… the creature eats us, it’s a serial killer.”
I haven’t seen any fanfic that includes the events from PL or acknowledges the events from the book, but go check out nodominion (Rose RPer), and antoineandthepiano (Antoine RPer), they both consider PL to be canon (they may have seen the fic u seek, too) 😉
Has anyone else seen fanfic that fits what duendology‘s lookin’ for? Please share w/ the whole class ^______^
I don’t know where these people live. I live in Poland too and it is no more homophobic place than any other country. Like seriously…
idk, clearly someone ordered it to be edited… Maybe there was less acceptance at the time of translation? I don’t think the translator would have taken it upon themself to make creative cuts like that 😛
In my suburb of Philly here in the US, a friend came out to me, privately, at 15 yrs old, as a lesbian. She told me she was telling me first, before telling other people at school, bc I might have to choose between remaining friends with her or being friends with all the people who were likely to reject her. I stuck with her. Some people did drop her as a friend because of it… this was the mid-90s. People acclimated to the idea and a year or two later, she was more or less accepted again by our formerly ex-friends.
But that is good to hear about current Poland! Equality for all.
