If you become a vampire do you automatically become a very sharp dresser or is that a skill that you develop over time. are there novice vampires meandering around in aeropostale shirts and khaki pants
If Daniel’s clothing in Prince Lestat is anything to go by, then yes…

ooc; Ehhh, she just felt very out of place, we got literally no explanation as to of who she was and why Lestat was there (which I guess we might get that in Blood Paradise), and her story read very much like Mary Sue fanfiction I would have read when I was twelve years old on fanfiction.net. But, of course, as I’ve stated before, Lestat himself is a Mary Sue, so I guess I can’t put a whole lot of judgement there.
I think my issue with Rose is just that I don’t see what she actually gave to the story. She seemingly had a major part, yet I feel like if she was subtracted from it all, the story would remain the same. Anne’s guilty of doing this thing where she introduces a bunch of new characters, yet never actually fleshes out any of her previous characters. We got all of this stuff about Rose, and yet we had chapters where Armand, Bianca, and Daniel were all within the same house and didn’t even acknowledge each other’s existence. Hell, Armand was practically not there throughout most of the book. And I would have honestly taken chapters of Bianca explaining what she’s been up to over Rose’s seemingly random story.
But that’s also just my opinion.
Same. I have a problem with throwing in a pointless female character just to have more ladies. Especially when you’re literally adding 6 or 7 people to the cast (or bringing them back from the dead). A lot of the stories were redundant or totally pointless (Killer… Cyril?) but Rose not only felt exactly like a low-rent Mona or weird new Jesse, she never serves any purpose or does anything interesting (this is also true of several of the men, especially Killer.. why Killer? We don’t care. We liked Baby Jenks, not this dick.) We’re supposed to care about her because we’re told Lestat and Louis do, but that’s it. It’s just not enough. If I were her editor, I’d have begged her to cut the Rose stuff for the sake of pacing. There’s no immediate need to pair Vikki up with anyone.
And yes, if she wanted to add more ladies, Gabrielle was a bad ass – give her a chapter. Lestat is her son. We would care way more about her. Or Bianca! She’s seeing Armand for the first time in forever, seeing his fledgling for the first time, etc. etc. So many better options with established characters we already care about.
That said, I get why people might like Rose. If she was a side-story, if she were part of a different book, she has some potential. Like Jesse, a girl raised unknowningly by vampires in some fashion is a cool concept. I just feel like it didn’t fit at all in this book. It needed more explanation and characterization than it got.
I agree with you. Looking back, I liked Rose/her story well enough (though I felt she had too little personality) until she was treated as being irreparably!broken! by the knowledge of vampires – I’m sorry, she lived through all that horrible abuse at the school, but semi-sleeping through Lestat cutting off Rhosh’s hand and arm is the thing that breaks her? As someone once said, puh-leeze, babycakes!
Also, Lestat of all people ought to know after what happened to Nicki that turning someone who’s having a mental breakdown involving vampires is not an automatic solution!
^PREACH
Well, I can not answer questions in the book about Anne Rice’s vampires, as that is copyrighted stuff right there, but you are more than welcome to ask me anything you want. Though I am not an expert in Anne Rice’s vampires. If you want to talk to an expert, I would turn you towards i-want-my-iwtv.
And as for the science behind burning in the sun, well, the first vampire to actually be effected by the sunlight to the point of death was Count Orlok in Nosferatu. The reason he disappears in the sun was to avoid copyright infringement on the ending of Dracula. So historically speaking, there is no lore to suggest that vampires would actually burn in the sun. In Dracula his powers were weakened but he did not burn. I think the main idea that vampires hunted at night is because humans slept at night, which left hours of mystery around what happened in the dark. If someone died in the night, or got sick in the night, they had no clue what caused it. It was much easier to think a creature from beyond the grave did it because the darkness is scary and science was lacking.
But if we want to say sure, vampires burn in the sun, we have to think “why?” The first reason might be the same reason I burn in the sun. They are pale. Pale people burn in the sun. Another reason could be because they are damned, and as such are not allowed to live in the illumination of God. God created light, after all. And if you think about it, Lucifer is known as the Morning Star, so it makes sense that vampires would have to live under the light of the stars.
Hope that answers your question for now! I will go into further detail in the book.
My idea was the vampires in AR’s books.
They say (or seriously imply) that vampire blood is flammable. Also in one of the books the vampires can absorb blood through the skin if they really really need it. That made me question the permeability of their skin—our skin is selectively permeable. Our body can more or less decide what to let in and out. What if their skin was less selective? Still hard to the touch of course but more open to diffusion by osmosis?
What if it had a susceptibility to certain radiation from the sun, which when it went through their skin, ignited their very-flammable blood?
This radiation can be IR, visible, or UV in nature, I haven’t been able to decide yet. UV light vibrates at the highest frequency of the three so it /seems/ more conducive but then UV light is blocked by glass and they could not be burned through a window. IR radiation is felt by humans as heat so that’s another likely candidate.
As you can tell, I like to steer away from religious reasoning. The science behind vampires and other creatures is my favorite thing. 🙂
Thanks though!
^This explanation is interesting.
- Re: Ricean vampire skin being more/less permeable than ours, well, it is described as having a different texture and sheen so that would make sense.
- Skin being permeable to absorb blood: blood is absorbed through the skin in movie!IWTV, during Louis’ transformation, and blood is absorbed through the skin in Merrick, during Louis’ other transformation (I think there was a line of dialogue, smtg like, “his whole body is drinking it!”)
- BUT vampire skin is not permeable to dirt, they’re often described as not able to get all that dirty? Like the filth doesn’t really cling to them. The hardness probably contributes to that.
- I don’t think window glass would be sufficient to block the destruction of sunlight on vampire flesh; Ricean vampires are always going on about the heavy curtains they use on the windows. It’s a combination of the UV rays and something else in sunlight that’s dangerous to them. Obviously they can be in a lighted room or stage just fine, so it’s not the visible light. Something else in the sunlight acts as a catalyst to burn the flammable flesh and blood.
- The susceptibility to the radiation from the sun seems lessened by the strength/age of the vampire, Lestat has his little tanning sessions where he can handle a level of burn that others just can’t.
It seems, since Louis is described as tan in Prince Lestat, that Louis has been coerced into joining Lestat on these tanning excursions. So OOC.
I don’t know – maybe his darkened skin is a still-remaining sign of the burning he went through in Merrick? Considering that he was charred to a crisp in that book (he seemed as nearly dead as a vampire can be without actually being dead, and Lestat had to save him by pouring blood into the coffin with him in the first instance, then feeding him), it seems possible that even after being brought back to health and strength by Lestat’s strong blood, he would still show some effects. After Marius was burnt in 1499, his skin was still tanned when Pandora met him in Dresden in the 1600s.
I love the theory of their skin being selectively permeable; it explains a lot in the books…
ooc; See, and I’m inclined to believe shroudsinvenice in regards to Louis. The only issue is, when Lestat revived him with his blood, David described Louis as having super pale skin (which made zero sense).
Yeah, it seems like we have a conflict between two rules of vampirism:
1. When they get strong blood it powers them up, which makes them go paler.
2. The tan from being burnt takes aaaaages to die away even for old/strong ones.
And I think Anne Rice probably never sat down and established a chart of effects that shows what trumps what. Which is understandable in a way – it’s not D&D with point values and stuff. But it does sometimes leave us with these weird inconsistencies…
merciful-death, that was what I remembered, too! Without checking the book bc really, canon is not always canon anyway.
shroudsinvenice: a chart or some consistency with your points would have been favorable. In the absence of such… we can either ignore that Louis was incorrectly described as pale in Merrick (which is just fine by me!), or we can go with your theory that Louis was still dark from burning.
I prefer your explanation to mine, with Louis happily going arm-in-arm with Lestat to the desert for such superficial reasons!
No matter how much you hate Prince Lestat I think we all gotta agree on how fab and under-appreciated Bianca is.
^^ Look at this perfect post of Bianca Solderini appreciation, guys. Just look at it.
Yes yes. Bun always has great Binky posts!
Prince Lestat – personal opinion
Response:
I have finally finished Prince Lestat, after the whole week of struggling to stay focused. And I need to share some of my thoughts.
Disclaimer: I’m an eternal optimist and I always, ALWAYS focus on the good parts, no matter how disappointing…
thanks for sharing your thoughts! ❤ I needed someone to be happy about some things with me ^.^
And you pointed out some more nice things that I forgot to mention. Femslash Coven for example xD We have some many gays over here, that seeing those magnificent ladies toghether was refreshing 😉
I approve of the existence of vampire scientists as well, it’s about time for them to appear. And yes, yes, and more yes for explaining mysteries. Talamasca, ghosts and Antoine were such a nice surprises! ❤
And it’s good to know that it’s not only me who actually thinks that Lestat stayed in character pretty well. He is as bold, ruthless, romantic and egocentric as always. I LOVED that scene with walking on top of a table with an axe, laughing. So awesome! And really, I’m not surprised that Amel ended up inside of him. Lestat tends to love every-fucking-body, of course he fell in love with that psychotic cloud of blood xD
Louis chapter ❤ ❤ I can’t get over it
And more vampire dancing, please. Marius dancing waltz was soooooo perfect. ❤ I hope we will see more of them having fun together, I don’t even care about the plot anymore 😉
Prince Lestat – personal opinion
I have finally finished Prince Lestat, after the whole week of struggling to stay focused. And I need to share some of my thoughts.
Disclaimer: I’m an eternal optimist and I always, ALWAYS focus on the good parts, no matter how disappointing and ridiculous the thing is. Which is exactly what Prince Lestat is, but I had fun anyway. And because the major part of the fandom seem to be focused on the annoying parts I will list my own TOP 10 of the sheer absurd, and once I’m done with complaining I’ll spread some rainbows over here.
Things about which I was groaning and moaning and things at which I actually facepalmed. Hard. With both hands.
- Viktor. His whole existence. His completely pointless existence and his lack of any personality.
- Rose. See above.
- The empty shell of Daniel. He used to have some personality, I liked him, where did it go? And I hate his clothes. What the actual fuck. And that stranger who looks like Armand. Who is he? Where is Armand? Hanging out with the real Daniel on some private tropical island?
- Being forced to see Benji and Sybelle. Especially Benji in fedora, playing adult and broadcasting some shit about vampires being a tribe. And then becoming a Minister of Communications. Sure. *groans*
- Magnus getting hot. Oh come on. The ONLY ugly person in the entire series and he couldn’t stay ugly? I get the fact that he was able to play The Sims 4 on himself so he did, but really, do we need everyone to be physically attractive?
- Nicolas not being a ghost. But I hope she keeps that for the next book.
- Not getting Marius/Bianca reunion. Or even a line of dialogue. Not getting ANY reunion nor actual conversation between vampires I hoped to see talking with each other. Why do I always have to imagine things between the lines? I’m lazy, I want to read them. In the canon.
- Awful and unnecessary death of Maharet and Khayman. Period.
- Anne praising her own books as deep and wise. *facepalm*
- Lestat forgetting how to use technology. But mind you, just the iPhones and laptops and e-mails. But learning how to drive a car, using phone, and electric lights, and showers. And trains, planes, credit cards, etc etc. Seems legit.
I’m done. That’s it. 1 and 2 are things I can hopefully ignore and pretend they don’t exist. I hope they will go on a honeymoon on Bahamas and stay there for the next 50 years. And that Sybelle and Antoine will stay where they are. In the background, playing the soundtrack (tho, I have nothing against Antoine actually).
Now, the happy list of things that made me squeal, laugh in joy, clap my hands, that made me delighted and tear up. And yes, I swear there are things in that book I honestly enjoyed.
- Marius. I was jumping a little bit every time that I saw his name printed on the page. He is obviously my favorite character in the series and I’m biased. But I think he survived the plague of OOC pretty well. I was trembling with fear that he will do or say something that I would refuse to accept but he didn’t so I’m glad. I like that he lives in Rio, has a view on the seashore, that he paints on the walls as he always did (lol, the police telling him to stop! xD) and that he destroys his brushes the way I do all the time. Those little things give me life. I’m not sure if I like the fact that he is with Daniel, but I don’t mind it either. And I’m so in love with the chapter 13 that I can’t get over it still. His reunion with Teshkamen and those words his maker told him, oh shit, I was shaking with excitement. I think I will write a separate post about it. Or draw a fanart. And I really like the way he is interacting with everybody in the Trinity Gate. And that he is writing the laws. I mean, if somebody has to, he is perfect for the job. Consul Marius and his codex. (it cracks me up, but I like it) Someone should carve it on a marble wall in a nice roman font. Just sayin.
- Teshkamen and Talamaska. I love Talamaska, I’ve always loved the idea of it and I’ve always suspected that there is some ancient vampire behind it. And I love the fact that this vampire happens to be Marius’ maker. I told you, I’m biased. I want to know more about Teshkamen. I genuinely like him.
- Lestat and David drinking from each other. Holy shit! That was hot. More of that please.
- Speaking of more… I really like Rosh and Benedict. And they had an actual bedroom scene! Hot as fuck again. I’m not sure why I like them, but the Minoan vampire and medieval monk being a cute couple seems to be an amusing idea and I like it. I don’t like the way Rosh was treated by Anne later on, but this is the happy list now.
- And I like Gregory/Nebaum. And Gremt. And Everard. I like almost all those new characters that everybody seem to be complaining about. Sure, I see your point, there should be more about characters we know and love, but I enjoyed meeting new ones. They fit into the story and I’m interested in them. Yes, I would prefer more about Marius, Armand and Louis. Yes. But I like those new guys.
- I like the new leg for Flavius. And new eyes for Maharet and Thorn’s eyes being restored to him. It made me happy.
- I like Flavius, Avicus, Zenobia and Bianca having their lives. Being alive and more or less happy.
- I love Gabrielle. Every word she speaks and every gesture she makes I want to slowly clap my hands in approval. And I clapped more enthusiastically when she slapped Lestat. Someone should have done that earlier.
- Louis’ epilogue. My sweet baby. Being finally at peace with the world and with himself. Let me love you, my dear.
- The descriptions. Good as always, tbh. The places were magnificent. Sevraine’s place in Cappadocia was wonderful. And I would gladly move in to Trinity Gate. And I like the idea of Lestat restoring his Chateau.
- And finally, I actually like Amel. The idea of him waking up in the silence of Mekare’s brain is cool. The way in which that idea was executed is another thing, but the idea itself is a good one. I like the thought of him being imprisoned in the empty shell of damaged witch he once loved and desperately seeking a way out. I like the thought of his loneliness and the longing to feel and understand. The plot was shitty but I like Amel as a conscious being.
All in all, I enjoyed the experience of reading a new installment of Vampire Chronicles after 10 years. It was like meeting my old friends after many, many years of missing them and wondering about their lives. Some of them I couldn’t recognize, but it was nice to see them anyway. And it’s nice to see the fandom being awake again!
I invite anyone who wish to discuss this book to comment the post or reblog or write me a message, I really want to talk about it!
I also tend to be optimistic, or at least, I can roll with a lot of imperfections in this fandom’s canon for some reason. I enjoyed the book. I thought there was a lot wrong with it, but here’s the stuff I liked:
1. Like you said: Marius. He’s my favourite too, and I was on tenterhooks about him the whole time. His comments on modern science side (I think we can substitute “Anne Rice didn’t want to work the science out THAT fully”), he’s in-character, thank god. I always assumed he’d stopped painting after Akasha, but I like the idea of him having picked it up again (and was very tickled by the idea of the police having repeatedly moved him on – “It’s okay, it’s just the weirdo with the paints again!”) I like that he found more vampires his own age to play with/apparently share wardrobes with. I like his and Daniel’s apparently relaxed relationship. And I liked the thing with Tekshamen and the fact that it changed Marius: it should. He’s been miserable for decades; he needed the hope of knowing that sometimes something completely unaccountable happens.
2. Jesse telling her story. It all played out very believably (including the assessment that Maharet had been so defined by her quest for Mekare that it damaged her to get her heart’s desire, and then find it impossible to connect fully), and the whole Jesse/David/Lestat interaction is very nice. I like David’s exasperation with Lestat, and also David lunging at Lestat and draining the hell out of him. That whole section is basically great.
3. GABRIELLE. EVERYTHING WITH GABRIELLE IS PERFECTION.
4. BIANCA. Bianca calling out Marius (and Armand, but especially Marius).
5. What laviniaspeaks called, I think, “Sevraine and the Femslash Coven For Science”. And Sevraine’s house. Such taste, very shiny, wow. Now she needs to be actually fleshed out, but I am very down with the whole concept of Sevraine existing so far.
6. WE GOT ELENI BACK. And hell, even Eugenie!
7. As upsetting as the deaths were, they did work, and that’s important. Hell, I was even upset about fucking Eric.
8. Vampire scientists; fucking finally.
9. Various mysteries and unfleshed-out things being picked up on: the origins of the Talamasca, the ghosts (I don’t know about you, but I for one am taking those as the explanation for those ‘bloodless’ immortals Marius recalled having been so alarmed by, in TVL), how Magnus stole blood and from whom, the musician vampire from IWTV.
10. The vampires no longer being so hung up on being damned. There’s only so long you can go in that particular circle.
11. Lestat calling what happened with Nicki in Paris his “greatest failure”. Nice to have that acknowledged.
12. Lots of Lestat stuff, actually: his whole lone-wolf thing reads very well to me as a portrayal of depression, especially when he finally does go to Jesse and David and is simultaneously joyous and convinced it’s been a terrible mistake to go near them. I find that truthful about the difficulty of connecting with people. And as concerned (we need a better word for this) as I am about wtf happens next, I do find it in character that he would do what he did at the end, re: Amel – it’s the contrarian in him, but also the pragmatist. Who the fuck else was going to do it? Nobody else so far had volunteered or suggested a remotely ethical alternative.
13. FLAVIUS IS BACK! I was slightly bothered by the fact we lost our one disabled vampire, but on the other hand, hell, I have missing innards I’d happily regrow, so I can’t begrudge him that leg. I also liked that conversation overheard between him and Pandora, and assume it has to do with how everything got fucked up in Antioch. This needs to be addressed in the next one.
14. Arjun being brought back and actually being a whole person and not just a faintly racist stereotype.
15. That Louis chapter. Holy shit, she nailed it.
16. Very, very much to my own surprise: I did not hate Sybelle and Benji in this. I actually thought Benji was interesting, and I like that he’s reached the I Hate You Vampire Dad stage of his existence. Because seriously, he has a fucking point. Also, Sybelle being no longer a damaged kook who can only play the fucking Appassionata over and over.
17. Vampire dance party.
Seventeen is probably a good place to stop.

but what about iPhone?!
iPhone appears 22 times. Which is a lot considering no one knows how to use one.

I was tagged by the lovely deadlyfixations (optional: add reasons!)
- American Horror Story – I am only getting into this show this season and am intrigued.
- The Walking Dead – Bc I love angst. And women samurai.
- X-Files – this was one of the first shows I watched religiously, and if there is an episode on, I have a compulsion to watch it nostalgically, also, Fox Mulder = adorable in appearance AND character. HE WANTED TO BELIEVE. SO MUCH.
- South Park – the earlier seasons were funnier but I still watch for the occasional gem. I do love Cartman. Egotistical bastards do something for me, y’know? Hmmmm….
- Robot Chicken – Are the voices funnier or the animation? CANNOT CHOOSE.
- Squidbillies – Such a cool style for the character designs and world-building, great voice acting, essentially a show about nothing, but something always seems to happen.
- Metalocalypse – because it reminds me of general hardcore industrial goth metal and lampoons the celebrities/rockstars behind the machine.
- Teen Titans – this is a guilty pleasure and I am ashamed that I like it.
- Pawn Stars – because I like to learn about old stuff. Also I like Chum Lee.
- Ren & Stimpy – this was way ahead of its time and I still can’t believe it was allowed on Nickelodeon bc it was GROSS. And AMAZING. Pushed such boundaries of artistic tastefulness.
- Bonus: Pop-Up Video – I loved this, this was where I got all my trivia about bands and music back in the day.
…. hmmmm… Look at all that animation I am a classy adult.

So, SO well done though. 😀
YES initially I had that thought, too. THERE SHOULD BE ANIMATION GDI THERE CERTAINLY SHOULD. OR AT LEAST A FULL GRAPHIC NOVEL FFS.
