asavagegardenindeed#ayyy i did this and the anger and fury that we see when he yells why should I know these things sends my heart shattering into a million little pieces

DITTO to both *cries a river*

TC read TVL in preparation for IWTV, BP didn’t, so TC actually KNEW STUFF LOUIS DIDN’T KNOW, AND KNEW WHAT HE WAS DOING THROUGHOUT THAT MOVIE and probably especially in this scene. #PROFESSIONAL ACTING

RDJ was AR’s pick for Lestat in 2010. Article here.

Knowing what I know now, I can totally see where she was going with that. Wrong for the part, yet also weirdly right…

Wow, is that ever the flip side of me celebrating that Cruise did _not_ get to play Tony Stark. Sheeeeez.

I… had never thought of it that way.

I didn’t know Cruise was even considered for Tony Stark! Apparently, yes. Dunno how reputable this source is, but PolicyMic offers an amusing reason why RDJ won out over TC (beware, triggering of TC fandom, tho!):

“…Tom Cruise was once slated to play Tony Stark in Iron Man… he demanded his face be entirely visible at all times, so the Iron Man armor would need a transparent visor. That was a little too much Diva-ness for the producers, so he got dumped. Instead, they went with this not-as-well-known actor called Robert Downey Jr. who wasn’t a sure bet because he was known to enjoy a little crack every now and then, but who nonetheless could act circles – and squares, triangles, and rhombuses – around Tom Cruise. Fortunately, that worked well for everyone, and now we have a Tony Stark for the ages, and Tom Cruise can live in a cave for all I care.

Mon dieu.

Cruise was ideal for Lestat. Ideal. Creating the impression that a terrifying well of real madness lurks just underneath the surface is where Cruise does his best work. He’s great in Magnolia. I love him in Top Gun. He would have made a good Bateman. And possibly a good Nolan-Batman as well (oxymoron though that phrase may be). And he made a stunning Lestat, even if he was about ten years too old.

He would have been terrible as Tony because Tony is a cocky, rich asshole (whose trajectory is towards learning to not be an asshole quite as much, I guess), and not a cocky, rich actual sociopath.

I will take this moment to tell everyone that my friends and I have actually speculated about what it would be like if Tony and Lestat hung out, and the answer is “terrible”. Despite the fact that they both love capitalism and cheesy metal, Lestat’s perma-21 European foppishness would drive Tony crazy, and Lestat would get intellectually insecure and have a Rice Out about it. The evening ends in either a) full-scale combat or b) each of them retiring to their respective lairs for extended snarking. Am taking bets.

United by a love of capitalism and cheesy metal! That’s AWESOME.

I had not heard that story about Cruise diva-ing himself out of playing Tony Stark. I _had_ heard that at some point Favreau was hearing from the studio “We want Tom Cruise, and under NO circumstances will you cast RDJ,” because at that point RDJ was only barely starting to be considered trustworthy to hire, again. (He went through a few years where productions couldn’t get insurance if they hired him.)

I now see how Cruise was perfect for Lestat, because I know more about his eccentricities now than I did when I was a high schooler. *sigh*

Truth: Did you like the Tom Cruise version of Lestat?

merciful-death:

TRUTH SERUM – My muse has to answer any and all questions regardless of what it is.

He captured Lestat’s exuberance well, although I hardly consider myself fully knowledgeable on the film. I have only watched it all the way through once, and that was when it was released in theatres twenty years ago.  I would not have viewed it at all if not for Lestat’s insistence on seeing the “greatest comedy of the year.”

I must admit, it was amusing that Lestat’s actor was shorter than the one who portrayed me.

Interview w/ the Vampire according to Lestat: GREATEST COMEDY OF THE YEAR

80s-90s-love:

Interview with the vampire, 1994, Christian Slater & Tom Cruise & Antonio Banderas & Brad Pitt & Kirsten Dunst

Kirsten’s not the only one that’s young and adorable. Is Tom wearing a matching midnight blue blazer and pants suit in velvet/velour?! What a diva, still in character.

Antonio is also in a some kind of luxe velvet/velour… Kirsten, too.. maybe they were told to aim for being in character, and Brad’s like, No Fuck that LEATHER AND KHAKIS IS TEH SEXAY. Plus he ran out and bleached his hair and laid out in the sun for like a month to make up for lost time.

Christian’s like I AM STILL A PROFESSIONAL JOURNALIST CHARACTER, DE RIGEUER IN ALL BLACK.

So I took your advice, and i’ve started on TVC in order. I’ve finished IWTV (I feel soo sad for Madeline, more then anyone) and am about to start TVL, but it’ll be slow going as I am starting classes. Should I see IWTV the movie now? (never seen it, i’m allergic to Tom Cruise) or should I wait til I’m thru QotD?

Yayyy! So happy to find out I’m (hopefully) infecting someone with this addiction.

Watch IWTV now, before reading TVL. Let Lestat just be the antagonist that Louis portrays him as, for now.

For more of my ramblings, click click:

Madeleine: It’s a strange feeling to be sad for Madeleine, and I am too, bc Louis feels almost nothing for her, even after sharing such an intimate experience with her :,( She has so little time. She probably wouldn’t have survived very long tho, she was mad. She started out a bit mad, and I blame Louis for making her poorly… he’d only seen this done twice, and didn’t take notes, lol… and he was reluctant to do it, didn’t seem to get any pleasure out of it, and that’s supposed to be one of the most exciting/pleasurable acts a vampire can do.

My own theory, formed in part from ideas from cloudsinvenice, is that Claudia tried to make Madeleine into a vampire on her own, numerous times, and that these blood exchanges might have driven Madeleine mad physically and psychologically. Only after suffering from enough of these repeated failures did Claudia have to lower herself by asking/begging Louis to do it.

You’ll see Lestat differently after reading TVL, he’ll be more layered, and then you can watch IWTV again, and notice subtle things Cruise does to call up TVL. After all, Cruise had read IWTV and TVL to prepare for the role. He must have read all the way through ToBT eventually, too, because there was a time when he was connected with the film rights to that book, and was considering reprising the role for it.

Now I’m rambling but whatever…

Allergic to Tom Cruise, hmmm… Well I’m not a Cruiser (hardcore Tom Cruise fans sometimes refer to themselves this way), but there’s always a place in my heart for him purely attached to his performance as Lestat, so that might help get you through your allergic reaction as well. His characters usually have an element of obnoxious good humor about them, at least in the 80’s and 90’s he was particularly excellent at the Asshole-who-learns-how-to-be-a-Decent-Human-Being-and-we-all-Love-Him-At-The-End-Because-Of-This-Transformation. One might think this is who he must be in Real Life since he chooses such similar roles. We don’t know.

If you’re allergic to him bc of who he is a human being, and I know he’s had alot of bad press, had alot of issues with his religious beliefs, and personal life… I think it’s unfair to judge him on those things. He’s a successful actor, obviously, his face alone still sells movie tickets and DVDs, and he’s a professional, often doing most of his own stunts.

I hadn’t cared for Tom Cruise (or Brad Pitt, either) before IWTV, I don’t think I even knew who they were. I liked Jim Carrey, Harrison Ford and David Dochovny at that time… I was pretty out of the loop on celebrity crushes, I think I was 12 when I saw IWTV (on VHS! omg), and I loved both TC and BP in it… It’s become nostalgic for me.

When I see their respective movies now, I still try to watch for little Lestat-esque moments in whatever TC is playing, little Louis-esque moments in BP 🙂 I’m not the only one who grafted some rockstar Lestat onto TC’s Stacee Jaxx from Rock of Ages, since Lestat does become a rockstar in Queen of the Damned.
