Fun story time: you guys know how in TVA and B&G everyone freaked out about the speed with which Marius painted?
So, in this ‘Paint like Botticelli’ class I joined, I didn’t tell anyone about my experience, and especially not about Vincent, because I just want to go there to paint without facing any expectations. And most of the people there are amateurs, they hardly have any previous experience with oil paint.
So, I picked a spot in the corner and started to quietly paint my portrait.
Some 4 hours later a group of wide eyed people:
HOLY SHIT WHAT HOW??? YOU CAME HERE WHEN I DID, WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU PAINTED AN ENTIRE OIL PORTRAIT, WHAT IS THIS SORCERY?????!
I’m not saying I feel like Marius, but I totally do xD I have a secret superpower :3
I just wanted to pop in and remind all the fic writers & RP’ers out there that you don’t have to listen to the black & white thinkers trolling this website who want to shit on you every time you bring up something sympathetic about your character.
It’s okay for “bad” characters to have sympathetic traits. It would be boring as fuck if they didn’t. It’s unfortunate that so many people out there are too salty and dense to understand a complex character, but don’t let it get you down!
If you’re a good fic writer or RP’er it’s really important to take all facets of the character’s personality into consideration. You aren’t here to write a 2D ebul cartoon. You should be taking their motives into consideration. You should be figuring out their demeanor. If they are a charming sociopath, you shouldwrite them as being charming. That’s the whole fucking point!
Fic writers and RP’ers engage in fandom in a way that unwraps characters and tries to figure out what makes them tick. We want to figure out why they feel the way they feel, we want to figure out their temperament, we want to understand. It’s an exercise in creative empathy and there are a lot of people out there who just don’t have a creative bone in their body. They’re gonna try to shout you down for acknowledging that a character can have gray morality or be a dichotomy in some way and I hope it doesn’t discourage anyone.
So get outta my face with all this purity politics bullshit, plz & thank you. Acknowledging conflicting pieces of your character is a responsible and creatively intelligent thing to do, and people who don’t get that can eat a dick.
Hello and welcome to our gift exchange! Not a strange question at all, no need to apologise 😉 Don’t be nervous, it’s all for fun!
I totally get where you’re coming from tho, we are definitely experiencing a surge of talent in the fandom, and it’s been wonderful to see such great response to #InktoberVC!
(^Claudia would totes join if she could, but she wouldn’t draw anything for the Louis/Armand ship lol)
From what I’ve seen over the years, ppl participating in the @vcsecretgifts exchange are happy to get any gift at all that relates to their prompt 😀 Even the best fanartists and writers talk about needing improvement in their work, and they know that we all have to start somewhere ^______^
Personally, I feel like the concept of a fic can make it great even if the writing style needs improvement, and similarly, I feel like great dialogue in a fan comic can elevate a piece even if the drawing itself needs improvement. I actually prefer to buy commissioned fanart in black & white bc I don’t always feel like a more “finished” look with color is necessarily better. There are some beautiful WIPs that stand up without being “finished”!
It’s all subjective, too, what I think is a “good” drawing or fic and what someone else thinks is “good,” but I prefer to think of all of it as being different styles. Some ppl dislike Jackson Pollock bc they see his art as splatter paint only (and therefore, totally unskilled), some ppl dislike Photorealistic painting for being too much like a photograph, despite the fact that it takes an enormous amount of skill.
We have ppl who participate who are unable to write or draw, but they are music buffs and make excellent playlists of songs for the characters/ships, or there are fans who do aesthetic photo sets, etc. Everyone participating is doing it more for the fun of giving a gift and receiving one, rather than one-upmanship.
(While some gifts do get more notes/reblogs/comments than others, well, I feel like the only comments that really matter are from the specific recipient, so it’s very important to show gratitude for the gift you’re given no matter what it is! Bc smne made it for you!)
All the gifts on that blog are for all of us; it’s true for me that I’m more likely to actually MAKE a fanwork when there’s a deadline and someone(s) expecting it, so I think that’s what it’s more about ;D
Btw last chance to join! Sign ups close at 11:59 pm CST!
Paris Catacombs: Bones from the Madeleine Cemetery
The Madeleine Cemetery, which stood in the 8th Arrondissement in Paris, was one of four where victims of the guillotine were buried during the French Revolution. Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were buried there temporarily, but now they lie at the Basilica of St. Denis.
The cemetery was named for Mary Magdalene. It opened in 1720 and closed in 1794, purportedly because it was full. Among those buried there were 130 victims of a fireworks accident at the engagement of the dauphin to Marie Antoinette, the Swiss Guards who were killed at the Tuileries, Charlotte Corday, and Madame du Barry, among others. It’s hard to know for certain how many people were actually buried there.
The Paris Catacombs hold the remains of an estimated 6 million people.
