Thanks for the compliments! Glad you like my blog š
(I get this question in different variations every so often, itās under my #Order of Operations for VC tag, if you want more thoughts on that.)
I always suggest reading all the books, but not everyone can or wants to do that. Those first 3 books tend to be considered as the best of the VC by the fandom in general, but individuals have different opinions.
Iād suggest you go on to book 4, Tale of the Body Thief, and read them in order, bc thatās the order in which AR explored her stories. I donāt know what aspect of VC you fell in love with before, so if you could tell me about that and/or your fave character(s), whether you have an issue with problematic things bc some VC books are more problematic than others⦠I could tell you whether you might want to skip Tale of the Body Thief, for example š
(Itās this line, right?)Ā āRise, Armand, we must leave here. They have come!ā
[^I donāt have a pic of Armand from the scene you mentioned, so have Claudia in a library w/ a bunch of studious older dudes who are probably concerned about what an 11 yo is studying for all these hours so late at night]
Armandās Venice flashback was in Mind-Gift-Vision⢠(or whatever you want to call it!), blasting out of Armand at Lestat and Gabrielle like water from a fire hydrant, and Lestat later transcribed it all for us about 200 yrs later. The Mind Gift is not exactly like reading a book; it seems to be more about sharing images, snippets of sound and feeling. Why did Lestat use Armandās name in that quote and not āAmadeoā? Some ideas:
Lestat wrote it 200 years after experiencing it, and yes, vampiric memory is supposed to be perfect, but he also went through a few assassination attempts, so itās possible that a few brain cells were lost along the way.
If Lestat āheardā anĀ āAmadeo,ā in the vision, maybe he thought he must have misheard bc he knew Armand as āArmand,ā and transcribed the name he knew.Ā
Maybe Armand concealed the name Marius gave him, maybe it was too painful for him to share that information with someone who had just wrecking ballād his coven like Miley Cyrus in a red velvet tank top & undies.
Maybe Armand had been successfully brainwashed to the point of sealing off that name off from his memory after all those years with the Children of Darkness, to remember it after Lestat left Paris at that time.
Or it was our usual *~unreliable narrator~* situation, assign the blame to Armand or Lestat š
⦠Or, LASTLY, and most likely, it was AR who hadnāt come up with the āAmadeoā part yet. *sighs*
I can understand why discrepancies and discontinuities can be jarring, and people do bash the authors of novels for delivering what the readers see as some kind of inferior product :-Ā
IMO, I donāt think an author, artist, or musician is obligated to serve to you a complete and perfect story/picture/song, w/ complete and perfect facts. AR has never said that was her intention. Even the Bible has discrepancies.Ā
Instead of being jarred out of the story, why not make our own headcanons? You can call them āexcusesā if you want š Like I just did above. Itās reasonable to assume Armand didnāt want to share that name. Itās reasonable to assume Armand didnāt remember it in that moment, or that Lestat failed to catch that detail, or thought it was incorrect.
Fanworks can criticize but they can also repair whatās confusing, can fill in the interstices of canon (check out this types of fanfic diagram!). You can engage with the material to criticize it, or you can engage with it to repair it, so many ways to engage with canon and, specifically, its discrepancies.
People doing this with fanfic, fanart, and meta-analysis have made the VC so rich!Ā Shared ideas have cured many things that were jarring for me. The missing musician vampire bothered me for so many years, and then, before PL was even a twinkle in ARās eye, I had at least one strong answer for his disappearance and it gave me a new appreciation for him, for Lestat, for his part in the fabric of the story.Ā
Your headcanon is up to you. You can enhance canon with it. You have that power. Ask other people for their ideas, they can help, too.Ā
Now Iām not saying every discrepancy can be explained, but it is somewhat more manageable in the earlier books. I would love to see people do it with the later books! With the larger things⦠that are harder to explain.Ā

Some of my favorite art misleads or leaves things out. Hereās, basically, fanart ofĀ Jackie O by Al Hirschfeld:
^She has the slightly cartoonish distortion all around, there are strong gesture lines, there are detailed areas (the necklace, the hair, etc.), thereās her face w/
distorted features, and then there are missing lines. The back of her left arm, most of her right arm, but you as the viewer can fill those in yourself. Theyāre not drawn but theyāre there.Ā
Itās not a photograph, itās an artistās interpretation of his subject, how she occupies space, maybe how she moves through it, her inner spirit.
Idk, not everyone likes Hirschfeld. Iām sure some people do not consider it to be Art. We all have our own experiences and our own ideas of what Art and Beauty and Good Writing are. Fanworks are a form of engagement with Art.Ā
This is a study in the power of the gaze. Who is really observing whom? Is it creepy Santa spying on a little girl? Is it the girl with her materialistic lust in her eyes? Or is the doll the true observer, shaming the others by her awareness that they can each only find fulfillment in the control and possession of othersā emotions?
Yes, I obvs enjoy our faction of the VC fandom here too! Weāre all excited/ nervous/other⦠some ppl have nopeād out entirely, itās a big mix *hugs*
Casting Claudia will probably not be an issue if they start with TVL, bc Claudiaās only in IWTV, and just mentioned in later books. It seems like AR really loves movie!IWTV, so I doubt she would redo that book.
But⦠letās cast an actress as Lestatās little sister for TVL, the 8th de Lioncourt child, and then have her play Claudia, too! The resemblance would be so heartbreaking! ;A;
For funsies tho, I must inform you⦠awhile back,Ā @hyperbeeb suggestedĀ Mia TalericoĀ [X], who just turned 9 on 9/17, and I have to agree!Ā
[^Sheās the kid from the āconfused babyā meme!]
Miaās had a long career already (IMDB says she was eleven months old when she started filming Good Luck Charlie, so thatās 7 yrs of acting, being directed, being comfortable in front of the cameras, etc.). I Perusing through gifs of her (thank u @child-actor-gifsā!), I think sheās got what it takes. Physically, who can deny that sheās super cute, w/ doll-like features as described in the books, fiercely intelligent, adorable smile, and naturally blonde already (so we can save a few $$ on hair dye!).
^Here she is a little older. She almost looks like she plotting here⦠Look what sheās doing with her hands, conscious acting choice? I think so. Imagine sheās crushing a (breakable prop) porcelain dollās face into shards instead! Yissssā¦
^Perfect disingenuous apology, very Claudia.
^āI want moreā¦ā hugs? Sure you do.
^So yeah letās hurl her at AR!Ā

I think we could also find a great child actress on Insta or YT, some fresh kid whose experience comes from making short vids under adult supervision so they are already accustomed to taking some direction bc kids are notoriously difficult to direct.Ā I love Katie Ryan on Insta (@katieryan430) ⦠Itās frickinā BATS.Ā
IIRC, there was alot of difficulty finding a 5 yo talented enough to play Claudia in movie!IWTV. Kirsten Dunst was the first they auditioned of one hundred actresses, varying in amount of experience, from around ages 5-12. The 5 yr olds struggled with the intensity that the part required⦠so I wouldnāt mind if they aged her up to 10 or 11. If they cast a 5 yo who looks perfect but canāt act like the frustrated adult inside, it wonāt really work.
If Claudiaās in the new adaptations at all, I think it will be as a ghost (in later books, she sort of haunts the Rue Royale, Louis, and Lestat), which could also be animated and voice acted by an adult.
While Iām flattered to be called the VC authority on Tumblr, Iāll accept it in just a tongue-in-cheeky way, bc if that were true, such a title would probably require real āadministrative duties,ā and other responsibilities that an Authority on smtg would have to perform.
My fave VC book is probably TVL, but I wouldnāt be here if not for IWTV, so they sort of go hand-in-hand for me. I hesitate to choose one over the other. IWTV had the elegant language, the dark ambiance, the existential angst that had a big impact on my own spirituality, and it had the beginnings of the Louis/Lestat chemistry.
But TVL edges forward bc it had the origin of their species story (a whole new take on vampire mythology!), it had more acts of love, more comedy and more charm and I fell for Lestat like falling down a flight of stairs ;D Not bc heās so damn pretty. For his refusal to quit, for how badly he fracks up but feels terrible for, and then keeps trying; for his insistence that there is so much thatās worth living for, that fascination can save him in the face of the meaningless emptiness out there.
-which ones do you think are necessary to read-
(I get this question in different variations every so often, itās under my #Order of Operations for VC tag, if you want more thoughts on that.)
I really think IWTV, TVL, and QOTD are necessary. Those books contain the core main characters and take the time to establish those characters. Later books will revisit some of the scenes from those books from different characterās POVs.
Some ppl write off TOBT as being too wacky and MtD as being too religious, TVA as being too Armand⦠and then the rest rapidly fall off the edge of what ppl consider canon at all because they introduce a bunch of new characters and storylines that the fandom has yet to fully embrace as canon (including the books AR herself does not currently accept as canon, the hybrid Mayfair/VC books).
Hit the jump for more, cut for length.
-and which ones would you say are the worst?-
Thatās up for debate and Iām sure for every book I mention I didnāt really like that much, thereās going to be a pile of ppl who loved it, as happens with the ones I liked and thereās a pile of ppl who donāt!
Under the cut are VC that I donāt feel added that much to the series other than being somewhat interesting diversions, and you can give them a chance and see what you think!
Vittorio – This is technically not a VC book, and he has a different origin story and is not part of the VC vampire group.
Blackwood Farm – This is mostly a story told to Lestat and heās not very invested in it, I donāt think many (any?) of the new characters introduced in this book make any more than a mention or brief appearance later on. It is also fairly cracky.
Blood Canticle – The last of the hybrid VC/Mayfair Witches novels, very cracky, AR has said herself that these hybrid novels did notĀ āwear wellā over time, and has stated that they are not part of the canon she continued with in PL and beyond.
