Good afternoon! ^__^ Which are the Goth-Rock songs you could always dance to? If I got it right, Bela Lugosi’s Dead is part of the list, right? :$

gothiccharmschool:

You are correct! Bela Lugosi’s Dead will always summon me to the dance floor!

A small selection of other songs that will lure me out:

  • This is Heresy – Christian Death
  • Lullaby / Just Like Heaven / Fascination Street – The Cure
  • Bloodletting – Concrete Blonde
  • Red Light / Peek-a-Boo / Kiss Them For Me / Face to Face – Siouxsie and the Banshees

The Vampire Chronicles Characters: Lestat de Lioncourt

I was the vampire Lestat again. I was back in action. New Orleans was once again my hunting ground. And I was asking myself, Lestat, what do you want to do now? Old rules didn’t matter to me now. I wanted to break every one of them.

In a perfect world, the casting of Lestat for the new movie is someone THIS decorative, but with the acting skills to ensure Lestat is more than a one-note spoiled brat. (Because while he’s the Brat Prince, the stupid egotistical rock star vampire has layers.)

(I’ve mentioned that Lestat is one of my favorites, right? Well I’m mentioning it again.)

please help me! I want to dye clothes black, not just retouching old black clothes ( I saw this lovely green dress online and green is not really my thing). Is this possible? Because all the dye i see in shops are for retouching

gothiccharmschool:

It depends on how light the green is, and what the fiber content of the fabric is.

Helpful links!

Hi, I’m asking you because I don’t know where else to turn (pun intended). I’ve been a fan of Rice’ books, and vampires in general, since my early teens (so around 15 years or so) and I have recently started to regain my interest. However I find myself in the same pickle I was in when I was a teen: There is no complete register over all the different kinds of vampire lore from all the different works of fiction, or at least I can’t seem to find one. Do you know if one exists? And if so, where?

Hello! Ah yes, a very good question.

I’m not surprised that you’ve been into vampires in general for 15 yrs. Vampires are such good stuff and can be written/depicted/analyzed in so many different forms and variations. Limitless possibilities really, bc creative ppl can choose to stick to the more classic rules about them, and others throw them away, or explain work-arounds… limitless possibilities! JUST LOOK AT THESE SPECIMENS:

image

Lestat is THE ONE THAT DIDN’T GET INTERVIEWED but let’s all acknowledge that IWTV was at least 65% about him… also bonus points to THE HALF-BREED ASSASSIN w/ a sword out, inching up on THE SPARKLY ONE…

[^tumblr source, artist unknown, tell me if you know who it is, I did a reverse image search and had no luck]

image

[^tumblr source, vampire lineup by Jeff Victor, who clearly skipped IWTV. OH WELL HIS LOSS SO I ADDED A LESTAT CARICATURE BELOW, tumblr source, artist unknown]

As for a complete register over all the different kinds of vampire lore from all the different works of fiction, I think that would be fairly difficult, unless it was online and consistently researched and updated by more than one mere mortal.

These lovely ppl are being tagged bc they may know of such a register: @askavampirologist, @gothiccharmschool, @annabellioncourt, @forthegothicheroine, @fyeahgothicromance, @vampiressuck24. Anyone else who might help out on this is cordially invited to answer, too!

Every vampire compilation I’ve ever seen in a library or bookstore has been a curated collection only showing specific examples of different vampires, presumably so that the author could move onto other books/projects!

My own blog is a curated collection. While I feature other vampires in my #vampire tag (from the Lost Boys, Only Lovers Left Alive, What We Do in the Shadows, etc.), I actually don’t love all vampires in fiction (*cough* Twilight *cough*) enough to make this blog the register that you’re looking for 😛

Hope that helps!

book-a-day-2016:

I have been aware of the delightful @gothiccharmschool for quite some time now, largely through her interactions with folk I follow here on tumblr.

What I did not know until a couple of weeks ago was that she wrote an etiquette book

I discovered the existence of this darling and informative book at work, when I suddenly found myself holding a signed first edition paperback with her name on the cover. To say I was excited would be an understatement. (I squealed and flapped and found every coworker in the room to show the book to, then promptly borrowed it to read.)

Having now read the entirety of Gothic Charm School, I definitely recommend it to everyone.

Why? Let’s make a list.

1. It’s an actual etiquette book about Goth culture for both Goths and those who are not Goth but know or encounter Goths.

2. The writing style is both easy to read and positively charming

3. Actual practical advice for social situations that can be applied well outside interactions with Goths. (As an autistic person who doesn’t try to hide my neurodivergence behind a neurotypical act all the time, I really like much of the advice in here. Please follow it. You’ll make me happy.)

4. Actual practical advice for everything from clothing alterations to getting candle wax out of shag carpets. Life skills, people! Everyone should know these things–one day you could be someone’s hero.

5. Learning manners is important.

6. Learning about subcultures you don’t understand is important.

7. The fantastic illustrations by the talented Pete Venters.

8. The wit and humor in this book is spot on and made me laugh aloud several times and smile a lot. On public transit. So there.

Seriously, if you’ve never thought to pick up an etiquette book, do yourself a favor and pick up this etiquette book. You won’t regret it.

Find a copy here! Or, if you’re in Portland, Oregon, get yourself downtown to Powell’s–the copy I have is going back on the shelf tomorrow, awaiting someone to come and take it home for keeps.

I am being totally vain and self-promoting, because this review of my book made me smile. Thank you, @book-a-day-2016!

(Also, thank you for calling out that the copy you read was a first edition! That’s right, folks, Gothic Charm School: an Essential Guide for Goths and Those Who Love Them is officially in it’s 2nd printing! I’m still flabbergasted by that. ::grin:: )

Gothic Novels of the Twentieth Century, by Elsa J. Radcliffe. I don’t remember how I ran across a mention of this book on Google, but once I did, I was entranced and had to own it. Yes, it’s a list of gothic novels, by author, up to about 1978, with occasional snarky commentary.

What Ms. Radcliffe had to say about Interview with the Vampire:

Seems indicative of this generation when psycho-socio-philosophy creep even into the literature of horror-Gothic. The absurd lengths to which introspection may go are at last met in this study into the inner life of a vampire. Some of the details of vampire life elaborated upon I found repulsive and without redeeming social value. The whole thing just doesn’t come off, in my view – as seems to be true, now that I think of it, with most vampire stories.

I am going to find this book vastly amusing.

Be kind to yourself in the year ahead.

Remember to forgive yourself, and to forgive others. It’s too easy to be outraged these days, so much harder to change things, to reach out, to understand.

Try to make your time matter: minutes and hours and days and weeks can blow away like dead leaves, with nothing to show but time you spent not quite ever doing things, or time you spent waiting to begin.

Meet new people and talk to them. Make new things and show them to people who might enjoy them.

Hug too much. Smile too much. And, when you can, love.

This is from Last Year. It’s the one that doesn’t get passed around as much.

If I unfollow you, it’s one of three reasons:

  • My dash has gotten to unwieldy/overwhelming. DO NOT TAKE IT PERSONALLY.
  • Untagged NSFW posts. Yes, I occasionally browse Tumblr on the work computer. POST WHAT YOU WANT ON YOUR TUMBLR. I just need to make sure IT doesn’t raise their eyebrows at me.
  • Tumblr itself being weird and unfollowing you without me noticing.

Again, take NONE of these reasons personally. And if you decide you want to unfollow me, that’s fine! Make Tumblr the space you need it to be.

Hi Auntie Jilli! I’m a TA for a Vampire Literature class at my college, and since finals are almost here, I wanted to make the kids a playlist of music about vampires to listen to while writing their papers. I’ve wracked my brain and only been able to come up with a scant few, though–do you have any recommendations? Things that your average grown-up-2007-emo-scene-queen might not know?

annabellioncourt:
