Can I just add: the way Lestat tilts his head in that second gif, #he’s so curious, #catlike, #absorbing the whole experience, #being in a moving car, #delicious pulse of a fresh victim burning in his hand, #all served up and waiting, #like Holy Communion, #Daniel might be one of Lestat’s first human kills since reviving himself, #all those years spent healing mind and body reading comic books, #living vicariously through Sam Spade, #eating rats and alley cats in a filthy hovel, #which is normally repulsive to him on so many levels, #wearing an old moldy blanket, #rejected by Louis, #utterly alone, #hiding from all the evolving world and scary new technology #and now he’s IN IT, #he heard Louis’ voice from the street and followed, #lurked anxiously outside, #bc even in San Francisco a wraith like him could arouse suspicion, #picked the license plate number out of Daniel’s mind, #got into the backseat and waited in his car, #waited in the dark as Daniel tossed his leather jacket on him, #waited hungrily, #lips too dry to even close properly, #and now he’s ready to leap into the next big adventure, #… #just needs a good meal first.

///Just out of curiosity: Who would you see playing Nicolette in an AU? I see Angie doing the thing
I think u got it right with Kristen Stewart, tbh! if she’d be willing to play a vampire of real substance of course

[X]
Angelina is more than welcome to join the party tho, maybe as femme!Santino? “Santina”? Or the old queen, Allesandra?
@raydramon hasn’t seen IWTV yet….This is going to be an experience *evil smile*
@i-want-my-iwtv do you have any entering remarks for someone who hasn’t seen it yet?
The story/movie is not for everyone, but hell, just have an open mind and let the gorgeous cinematography, fashion, music, angst, fluff, romance, violence, and fire have your undivided attention put away ur phone and ur interwebs!, let it all sweep you away from reality for 2 hours.

Did anybody like Anne Rice or the director of IWTV have anything to say with the way Armand was portrait in the movie. Did they say why movie Armand didn’t have red short hair and wasn’t 17?
Well, I have never come across an interview with AR or director Neil Jordan about why Antonio was cast for Armand. I should have an FAQ and when I do, this will be right up at the top of that list!
I should probably watch IWTV with the director commentary again; he might have mentioned smtg about it and I’ve just forgotten, so I will do that.
ANYWAY, there are a bunch of theories as to why Armand is portrayed the way he is in the movie and my fave explanation, currently, is that movie!Armand is actually a blend of Armand and Santino.

Why do that?:
- If they had cast a cherubic teenage redhead (or older creepy cherub dude trying to look 17 *cough cough* movie!QotD *cough*) it might have made Louis look like a pedophile, dumping his 11 yr old “beloved” (as he calls her) for someone only 6 yrs older (in appearance, anyway).
- For people who hadn’t read the book, someone cuter than Louis might have taken the sympathy away from him (who was supposed to remain the focus, it’s HIS story, after all). That would have been compromised by omg cute little redhead bby we want to snuggles you!
- Armand was supposed to replace Lestat in the sense of being a better mentor/teacher/father figure to Louis, and so that someone had to be more paternal-looking. Someone who would look older.
- The actor had to be a bigger star than Brad Pitt (or at least older than BP)
- And he had to have some European or other ethnicity, because these Parisian vampires were supposed to be darker, scarier, more like Real Vampires of the Old Ways than the softer Americanized Vampires. Their vampire makeup (aside from their TdV costuming) shows them to almost be a different, more vicious species from Louis (who has to still maintain his “most human”-looking vampire status).
In all this, Santino really fits the bill better, and my guess is that AR suggested it, she was the screenwriter, after all.

Do you have any fanfiction recommendations? Personal favorites?
Fanfic?? there’s no such thing as VC fanfic… pfffft. What are you crazy honestly??!

^Lestat is laughing bc he knows I is sarcastic.
I have a huge list of faves. HUGE. But the thing about VC fanfic is that we still have to be sort of careful about sharing it bc of reasons (under the cut if you wanna know why).
MY faves may not be what you’re looking for as I tend to skew L/L, since they are the OTP I am hopelessly afflicted with, but I have some drabbles and links to fic saved with other characters in my #fanfic, and #damn you and your perfect headcanon perfection tags here. There’s also some fine stuff in the @vcsecretgifts archive.
Archive of Our Own (aka AO3)
has a mission statement about protecting fanworks from copyright infringement arguments, so I feel pretty safe recc’ing stuff that’s on there:
-
Gulfport: A British Petroleum Fanfic (Part One) by hw_campbell_jnr – There are 2 parts and it’s incomplete but this is devastatingly beautiful long!fic. Hipster modern Lestat and Louis, Lestat going by a pseudonym, politics woven in, it’s just too good. It annoys me how good it is. I am annoyed. I would be less annoyed if it were COMPLETED.
-
First Light by Rebness – Such feels, Claudia’s POV on her final night ;A;
-
The Grim Brothers by Rebness – incomplete but it’s a fun little werewolf AU! I hope the author picks it up again someday.
-
The Sexting Caper by Gairid – because sexting!
-
The Haunting by Gairid – A haunted object.
- Gairid also has some excellent long!fics and collaborations with Leshan that are worth checking out, too many to list here.
- My stuff… see Burnadette_dpdL. De Motu Cordis is not my fave but has one of the highest hit counts. L/L lovey fluff *blushes*
-
One Night in New Orleans by iskra667 – L/L dubcon angst, fluff, I just really enjoy it.
- Childhood memory – a harsh lesson is learned (not the official title) @devilsfool – a response to an Ask, a first kiss, child!Lestat.
- Lestat’s actual birthday (not the official title) by @viaticumforthemarquise – Gabrielle’s POV on the day Lestat is born oh gawds! Baby!Lestat
Hit the jump for a teensy fanfic history lesson.
In short, Anne Rice had waged war on VC fanfic in the mid-90s, sic’ing her lawyers on many fanfic writers, eventually breaking apart fanfic sites (“speculative fiction” or “spec” archives/communities) and driving many of these writers to stop writing altogether or do so in a more underground way.
Currently, she’s had conflicting stances on fanfic, but hasn’t made outright war at nearly that level. We try not to tag her in discussions of it, basically, we don’t try to provoke her by making our caches of VC fanfic known. Especially on Facebook, where she’s very active and might see it. She posted this on her FB in 2014 (I think):

Nah you’re not slim or pretty enough to be a vampire
ok but like are you trying to tell me that there has never been a fat vampire? a fat person has never been bitten nor has a vampire ever drank enough blood to put on some weight? really?
First of all why would you say that to a stranger on the internet? I feel sorry for Anon, that they felt the need to put someone down this heartlessly. What a gross oversimplification.
How dare you tell someone they’re not pretty or slim enough for anything. Who made you the Decider of Prettiness and Slimness? I didn’t vote for you.

While it’s true that fandoms/media tend not to glamorize fat and/or ugly fictional vampires, they do exist.
@askavampirologist might have more to say on this, but here’s a whole pile of fat and/or ugly vampires some of which I found on a QUICK SEARCH OF TEH GOOGLE which Anon could also have done but was apparently too lazy or cynical to bother with doing.
1. Magnus, Lestat’s maker, is described as being ugly. He’s missing all his teeth except for his fangs. Were they lost/removed before he became a vampire or after? We don’t know. Usually, having all one’s teeth is a necessary element in being considered “attractive,” among other things. [Fanart by J. Oliver, Magnus on the right]

2. Meet Pearl from Blade, a FAT AND UGLY VAMPIRE. Someone made him (I don’t remember if Pearl was m/f) a vampire, was it before he was obese or after? Was it before he got ugly or after? Someone had a reason to do it and it might not have been based on beauty or slimness AT ALL.

3. Here’s Deacon from What We Do in the Shadows, and while I wouldn’t call him FAT, I wouldn’t call him SLIM either. Nor is he attractive to everyone even tho he thinks he is.

4. Here’s a Cassandra Clare quote on the subject: “Maybe they didn’t make vampires out of ugly people. Or maybe ugly people just didn’t want to live forever.”
^While I don’t necessarily agree with her, there could be some truth in that. Not everyone would want to have to kill to live forever, maybe it so happens that “fat” and/or “ugly” people are more compassionate in that regard and wouldn’t be able to do it. Or there have been
“fat” and/or “ugly” vampires who have chosen to die rather than continue vampiring for whatever reasons.
You want some more? Hit the jump.
5. Alan Moore made a “morbidly obese vampire bride” … “a fat monster that spends her day wallowing in the filth of an abandoned movie theater.“ It was part of a Swamp Thing series, I think. [full page here]

6. Lady Luljetta “is a female vampire who resides in the country of Lelitania, where is originally from no one really knows.” [X] There seems to be fanart of her out there! [fanart by @fatline, who will draw any and all fat related draw requests]

7. This is a very real book, I haven’t read it but apparently it’s part of a FAT WHITE VAMPIRE series!

8. Here’s another fat vampire series:

9. Here’s a coupla fat vampires in a cartoon:

10. Here’s a fat vampire kitty from schadenfreudepony:

What do you think of the choice of Tom Cruise as Lestat? When the movie came out I read A.R. wasn’t happy and I was surprised, but then I read the books and I agreed with her. I love the movie and he acted very well, but I can’t see him fit as Lestat.
You come into mY HOUSE-!
*siiiigh* Are we still talking about Tom Cruise’s casting? I recognize that I’ve been in this fandom since before the movie came out (so it’s been officially 21 years of hearing this question), and that there are new ppl to fandom every year with their own headcanon of the character.
When anyone comes across AR’s very strong initial negative opinion of Mr. Cruise they may even agree with her at first. However! She published another opinion after seeing his performance (in the test reel even, thanx @annabellioncourt!) in which she praises him to high heaven even more strenuously! She still occasionally mentions him on her FB with affection, even now.

So as I said. AR changed her opinion:
“ON TOM CRUISE: From the moment he appeared Tom was Lestat for me. He has the immense physical and moral presence; he was defiant and yet never without conscience; he was beautiful beyond description yet compelled to do cruel things. The sheer beauty of Tom was dazzling, but the polish of his acting, his flawless plunge into the Lestat persona, his ability to speak rather boldly poetic lines, and speak them with seeming ease and conviction were exhilarating and uplifting. The guy is great.“
And I agree with her 110% *u*
You can find some other options for casting Lestat in my #VC casting tag, but what I think it all boils down to is that an actor’s job is to ACT. Since a fictional character exists in our imagination, there is no perfect physical casting for him EVER. Not even illustrated in graphic novels or animation. We can all agree that there are certain physical characteristics he should have, like having blond hair, but there are so many shades of blond. Even then, that one thing we can all agree is necessary for Lestat was TOTALLY DISCARDED in the Queen of the Damned movie sooo… *shrugs*
It’s up to the director to choose who they want to act out the story they want to tell.
Bonus: Neil Jordan, #certified vampire therapist

I have another suggestion for a possible VC casting, which would be Rami Malek as Enkil. I think he has the right face for it, and he already played the role of an Egyptian ruler in Night At The Museum. (And he was a vampire in the movie Breaking Dawn, but let’s forget those catastrophic Twilight movies.)
One of my fave topics is VC casting 😀 and Enkil doesn’t get enough love. So naturally I wrote an unnecessarily long-ass answer.

(^Rami Malek from NatM bc I couldn’t look at pics of him from Twilight, that vampire makeup was just too weird for me and that’s saying a lot bc I love the gross vampire makeup from 30 Days of Night.)
Rami is ethnically perfect and very cute and Enkil was supposedly pretty young when he started his rule:“But he was young and strong and determined to rule his land.” Maharet talking about Enkil, QOTD
And he looks like someone a giant bitch in a tiny package Strong Woman like Akasha could push around without much resistance. I vaguely remember liking Rami in NatM, all those characters were somewhat cartoonish and I always enjoy that. I’ve only seen bits of the Twilight movies but not enough to poison myself, and not enough to remember him from them 😛
But if you really want MY opinion, he’s not my first choice for Enkil.
We first really meet Enkil in TVL when Lestat meets him for a cordial discussion Enkil nearly crushes Lestat’s skull in defense of his Queenie. Even before that moment, Lestat is freaking the hell out over TWMBK. Not many characters are capable of scaring the (figurative) shit out of Lestat, and Enkil is one of them. So he needs to be able to look intimidating before he can speak or even move. Granted, some of Lestat’s flipping-out was more about the fact that they might be paralyzed inside their bodies (if you haven’t seen @remarried’s fanart of that moment you really must), but still. The near skull-crushing certainly gave him someone to be scared of in Enkil. Normally I defend all actor’s abilities over their physical characteristics, but in this case, he starts out as a statue, and needs to look intimidating without the help of fancy moves and lines.
So I imagine him looking more masculine, a hint of grimness (he orders some pretty cruel stuff if you remember!) and some mystery in his face, and I happened to see Ranveer Singh on my dash just today… and yes. Yes yes. Yisss.

Difficulty: Finding pics of Ranveer NOT smiling. I don’t know his acting, whether he does Serious at all, but physically, Ranveer matches my headcanon better than Rami. Rami might be a good Khayman, though.
I’m also not of the Social Justice Warrior contingency that demands ethnic conformance of the actor to the character. I am not politically correct *shrugs*
And Enkil does love Akasha, and I would want some snuggles like this:

Or you could try to play a role for someone, keep them on the surface as long as you can… they may leave ANYWAY bc you weren’t willing to open up.
Let’s throw away the idea of capturing someone like a fish on a line and trying to claim them, some kind of bizarre ownership situation. Share as much of yourself as you are able to, and if they leave because of what they learn, then you can enjoy the time you spent together and be free to find someone who is more compatible with you.
You may never find someone who is perfectly compatible with you. OTP’s are a great thing to fantasize about but not necessarily realistic.
Be happy on your journey through this life, take care of yourself, and if someone shares that journey with you (as a friend or as a significant other) for a period of time, great, if not, also great.
Throw away the idea that you need someone to complete you. You complete you.
It’s fine if you don’t like romantic and sexual relationships in fandoms but there’s no need to blast others for having them.
vagabonddaniel-recordedarchives:
ooc: But… But I do like romantic and sexual relationships in fandoms. I usually write Armand/Daniel as romantic and sexual. I have many other ships that I love reading or writing in romantic and sexual ways. I have nothing against them at all. I certainly didn’t “blast” anyone for having them or liking them. I merely suggested that people stop holding up romance/sexual encounters over everything else as if they are the only sorts of relationships or encounters that matter.
Romance is important. But not important to all people because some people are aromantic. Sexual relationships are important to a lot of people. But not to all people because some people are asexual and some fall somewhere on the gray-ace scale. (And that doesn’t mean an aromantic asexual can’t enjoy reading or writing those things, as well. Just that romance and sex aren’t a priority for everyone.)
Fandom tends to put romantic ships on pedestal above all others. Probably because fandom on tumblr especially is obsessed with Shipping. People Ship It and if you don’t Ship It, you’re a “hater.” But not everything has to be a romantic ship.
Fandom also tends to take non-romantic and non-sexual canon relationships and turn them into something romantic, and that’s awesome. Fandom is all about taking canon and exploring all of its possibilities. If people want to write Jace Wayland and Simon Lewis as romantic, well, show me the slash fic! I am there. But I don’t want people holding up Jace/Simon as though it’s better as a romantic ship than a bromance or friendship, because platonic friendships and familial relationships and non-romantic love are important, too. And while it’s fun to read and write smut and sexytimes and UST and all forms of sexual tension, it’s also fun to explore other aspects and dynamics and levels of love/friendship/frenemies beyond messing up the sheets.
That’s all I was saying.
^Beautifully answered.
