Thank you for the very well thought out answer. I really enjoyed it. I did have another question (if I may), in general, how do we as a base know what is unreliable information or not when it comes to our narrators because from what I’ve always gathered, they have the earnest desire to convey the truth as they can see it. Armand sure, cannon liar, but Louis in IWTV had nothing but genuine intention and no reason to lie. Thank you for your time, you’re awesome ^^

You’re so welcome, glad you enjoyed it! Answering asks is so much fun for me, it makes me consider my own current and previous thoughts, sometimes I even ask around privately for more ideas… and try to write it out as best I can, it gives me an excuse to make fresh gifs/memes, sometimes it inspires others to make fanworks… and I always like to hear back from the original asker that the effort was appreciated *u* ((No, you only get one question per quarter. Pffft. Of course you can ask more!))

“in general, how do we as a base know what is unreliable information or not when it comes to our narrators because from what I’ve always gathered, they have the earnest desire to convey the truth as they can see it.”

You would think that, but just like in real life, people can narrate a story for their own motivations.

image

TL;DR:

The characters telling their stories don’t always have the earnest desire to convey the truth, so it’s not always clear what the reliable information is! When we have accounts of the same event where the details align, that seems to be the best way to confirm it’s canon, bc even Anne Rice can’t always answer fan’s questions about canon stuff to everyone’s satisfaction.

When there’s conflicting details, we have to rely on headcanons, which ppl can choose to agree on or not, hence the fandom phrase, #Your Headcanon May Vary.

For example of facts aligning: I think we can all agree that Armand was the unspoken leader at the Theatre des Vampires bc Lestat left him there in a position of authority in TVL, which is where Louis found him some 80 years later in IWTV, confirming that that was Armand’s role there.

In the scene above,

IDK at that point in canon whether Lestat believes in a God, but if not, he’s deliberately lying to Claudia, bc she’s never going to see her mother again. Even if he does believe in God, he still doesn’t know where his dead go! He’s trying to answer her in a way that will keep her calm and complacent. He knows Claudia’s mother is dead, he saw the corpse in the movie. But she is still a child and he doesn’t want to scare her or depress her, or make her feel guilty about killing, which she just did!

I also think he’s a little taken aback bc she’s asking him for the whereabouts of her biological mother just minutes after he turned her into a vampire, a process that’s been compared to birth. It’s the most intimate act a vampire can experience. His smile falls right after she asks bc in a way it seems like he’s a deflated that she wants her biological mother, it’s like she’s already saying, “You’re not my REAL dad!” It might also remind him of his own mother who abandoned him ;A;

Re: Lestat P.1: In TVL, Lestat tells Armand:

“I never lie,” I said offhand. “At least not to those I don’t love.”

I’m still not 100% clear on this, bc of the double negatives. Can we translate it to “I’m honest with those I don’t love.” –>  “I lie to those I love.” ? He spent some 65 years lying by omission to Louis and Claudia about the other vampires, and all the secrets he knew. So who’s to say he doesn’t also lie to his readers, “those I don’t love” ? How much does he really love his readers?

Re: Louis: I’ve always felt, and there are others who share this opinion, who gave me this opinion, that IWTV was dictated to Daniel from Louis with the intention of pissing Lestat off enough that he would rise from wherever he was hiding and find Louis. While I don’t think Louis intentionally LIED, I do think he might have embellished some things, exaggerated here and there, left out certain things, in order to achieve his goal. And it WORKED because…

Re: Lestat P.2: The Vampire Lestat was Lestat’s rebuttal to IWTV, containing all the secrets he couldn’t tell Louis during their time together, so I’m inclined to believe that Lestat earnestly wanted to correct the record and win Louis back, since he still loved Louis.

Re: Armand: TBH, I don’t know Armand’s story well enough, what I believe and what I don’t, in all of canon, to say that he’s a liar. I think, like Louis and Lestat, he embellishes, he lies by omission, and he tells people things when he wants a certain reaction out of them. He lied to his coven when he was a leader all those years since he never really believed in serving Satan. Or did he? It seems like he didn’t.

There is a particular scene that Armand describes in TVA that is questionable, as to whether it happened.

How he tried to “help” Claudia the night she died (fanart by @sheepskeleton here, if you dare, it’s gorey). Personally, I sometimes believe it’s the truth bc Armand does like… experiments! But then I also remember how David was flirting excessively with Armand in that book, and so it’s possible that “this story was just something that Armand made up; somehow trying to intimidate the others, displaying the cruelty he could be capable of.” (quote from @annabellioncourt)

Lestat is a Capricorn but there’s no information on Louis’ birthday. I always think that he’s a Cancer or Pisces. What do you think? lol

What you’re asking is not written explicitly in canon, iirc, but fandom has generally accepted the following info, maybe bc AR told us over the years? I don’t remember when we were told…

image
  • Lestat’s birthday is November 7, the birthday of Anne Rice’s late husband Stan (whom she partially modeled Lestat after).
  • Louis’ birthday is October 4, which is Anne’s birthday.
  • Claudia mentions her birthday in her diary (in QOTD) as being September 21, but she’s not sure if that’s really her birthday and her dads won’t explain it further

(it’s probably the day she was turned, given the context of the diary entry). That’s Michele Rice’s birthday, Anne’s late daughter.

So Lestat is a Scorpio and Louis is a Libra. I don’t know much about astrology, you’ll have to take it from there, anon!

how do u make all your gifs and things???

Um I’m a little insane…

image

Obsession fuels it, I can usually remember the scene I want when I have a good joke or text post to go with it. Then it’s a matter of slapping the images and text together.

I have *~a particular skill set~* w/ enough photo and video editing training that I can pull frames from my DVD copy of IWTV but it’s gotten a lot easier over time for just about anyone with even the most basic knowledge of apps to do some of what I can do here and sometimes I have to resort to more basic programs when I don’t have access to my higher-powered stuff at home.

There are tutorials on Youtube for grabbing images and making gifs in various ways. That’s how I learned to make gifs. I would include links here but there are too many to choose from! And it depends on what software you have and how much photo and video editing you already know.

I use Adobe Premiere to capture frames, and Photoshop to manipulate them and add text. I pay for both legally. I recommend that so that you can have a clear conscience and also you can call Adobe for support!

You can also do it with MSWord, MSPaint, and there is free screencap software out there (I think the Snipping Tool is already installed and free w/ the Windows operating system), just get a copy of the movie so you can pause it and pull your screencaps!

^Yes I spend my free time and design skills making graphics re: a movie (that was made 20+ years ago) for a series started 40+ years ago I HAVE NO SHAME AND NO REGERTS ;u;

Lestat, care to give us 5 fun facts about you?

♛You want fun facts? Fun facts… mon dieu, what haven’t I told you about myself in all these books? Minutiae I suppose. Or what I consider to be so.

image

1. I have a coffee-colored birthmark on my lower abs, on the left, near my Adonis muscle, which can be seen just above the waistline of low-rise jeans. My mother has an identical mark on the opposite side, a mirror reflection of mine. It was something she and I had some kind of inside joke about when I was a small child, but I can’t for the life of me remember the punchline. It would send us both into the kind of laughter that makes your face hurt.

2. Oh! This is worth telling: I discovered sometime in the 90’s that we can be tattooed, but that the tattoo will fade away entirely during the Deathsleep. Daniel may have been involved. Of course we decided that I absolutely had to get a large tattoo across my chest that read, “Property of Louis” in huge black calligraphic lettering, just to see Louis’ reaction. When I spread open my shirt to reveal the work of art, every drop of blood drained from his face!

He was frozen in that special moment before the judgment begins. It was a sight to behold. Instead of lay in with the judgment as usual, he actually shifted into damage control, terrified it would last forever, and immediately started looking into laser-removal treatments! He fell asleep at the computer that morning and had to be carried safely to bed.

How relieved was he when my branding had disappeared by the following night? After some heavy physical punishment to my person, he treated me very well for the entire night. How so? Read between the lines, mes petits.

3. I do have taste preferences with blood. For the appetizer, as you know, I like it young and fresh, and I like to get the victim fairly emotionally stimulated because it adds spice. Women especially, for the more delicate package, too, and all the softness. For the main course, older is better, and angry, preferably. A touch of fear is good. Adrenaline makes older blood that much richer. Men, usually, the struggling muscles feels so very soothing.

4. When I’m not devising a scheme to drive him crazy, I leave Louis post-it love notes hidden in various places where he’s sure to find them. Yes, I do that! I am sickeningly romantic. Tactically romantic; those notes tend to plead my case better than I can when we’re deeply embroiled in a fight.

5. I may have ordered custom-made fangs for a special precious friend of mine, molded off of my own. And I might tell you more about that another time… if you beg properly.

Do you have a tag for VC facts?

Yes and No!

image

Lemme just explain a thing real quick tho first, there are differnt types of VC “facts,” and you might find something of what you’re looking for here anyway:

  • Canon facts – facts explicitly stated in canon, like that Daniel’s eyes are violet, or Claudia’s birthday is September 29.
  • Authorial facts – facts not explicitly stated in canon but AR gave us, like that Louis’ birthday is October 9 and Lestat’s birthday is November 7. Some fandom ppl accept these into their own headcanon and some ppl do not.
  • Fanon “facts” – “facts,” or rather, info and stories that some fandom ppl have accepted into their headcanon that was generated in fanfic or fanworks, or wherever, like the fact that the eighth de Lioncourt was a girl.
  • headcanon – what individual fans believe as true facts, which might be an original idea or from one of the above categories.

^SO WITH ALL THAT IN MIND, here are some tags* where you might find any combination of those things:

*and unfortunately (or really, fortunately, in my opinion), some other fandoms are mixed into my tags because as pure as I try to keep this, other media/ideas/fandoms/etc. have found their way onto this blog bc of reasons. Good reasons.

“#stealing this for my fandom” don’t you think that’s kinda rude when it literally has zero to do with the fandom?

[This Anon is referring to this recent reblogged post]

Valid question! No, I don’t see it as being rude to show appreciation to fanart by reblogging it and tagging it w/ Tumblrand Hyperbole™

as follows:

“#stealing this for my fandom”

That was the tag I came up with when I first started wanting to reblog fanart from other fandoms (or original characters) that could also pass for fanart in our fandom, so that I could keep it separated from the “#fanart” tag I try to keep purely VC. I don’t think I even use it that often.

It’s Tumblrand Hyperbole™ for me to say I’m “stealing” it. I’m not literally stealing anything; when I reblog things like that, I don’t even add visible comments like, “OMG THIS LOOKS LIKE ARMAND” or anything like that, which could be considered kinda rude. When people then reblog it from me, they can add comments and/or tag it however they want (in fact, there are people who do reblog these kinds of posts and original posts from me and add visible comments like, “THIS IS SO [X CHARACTER IN OTHER FANDOM]”) and I don’t mind at all, bc this is a social media platform and people like to add comments to engage w/ others here.

Whatever my tags or reasons for reblogging something, it’s still true that Reblogging gets that fanart more attention than a Like. I’m still promoting that fanartist. Especially when I’m NOT adding any visible commentary that would detract from their artwork.

Side note: I have never received a message from any active fanartist asking me why I tagged one of their works "#stealing this for my fandom,“ and I would happily remove the tag upon request.

What if someone sees the fanart bc I reblogged it and decides to follow that fanartist? The fanartist gains a new follower! Yay! What if that fanartist also offers commissions? I’m advertising their work! And maybe they’ll be willing to draw fanart for our fandom, since the character we would want might be similar to something they’ve already drawn.

There are many similar-looking characters out there, just as there are many similar-looking people out there. Francoise Brunelle did a series of strangers who look like twins. Here’s one example (which I picked bc they’re cute, but there are more identical pairs to choose from) [X]:

image

There are also websites like https://twinstrangers.net/, and http://www.ilooklikeyou.com/. I’m sure there are more.

TL;DR: What I’m doing when I’m ”#stealing this for my fandom" is actually remarking on the uncanny resemblance that character(s) has to ours. There are plenty of auburn-haired teens in all kinds of media. If I choose to reblog fanart of one of them, it’s out of appreciation and I’m still promoting that fanart.

do you have any thoughts on how the vamps change overtime, character wise? For example, say Lestat in TVL vs Lestat in body thief? Or even Armand in IWTV vs Armand in the later books. I haven’t read PL, and as much as I love these vamps I feel like gradual character development isn’t really present, it seems to come suddenly and all at once instead. (Sorry if this doesn’t make sense, I have trouble wording things sometimes)

This is a gr9 question! NOT an easy answer. And I think you got your question across just fine 😉

image

AR deserves more credit* than you might think, for the way she jumps around through the series, shedding light on the previously established timeline via different POVs, or just having a character revisit the same scene. Sometimes she also does “Retroactive continuity,” or “retcon” for short: “the alteration of previously established facts in the continuity of a fictional work.”

*Actually, some might argue that when she does this it offers frustratingly conflicting views on previous events, hence, the Unreliable Narrator issues we have throughout the VC.

Anon: “…as much as I love these vamps I feel like

gradual character development isn’t really present, it seems to come suddenly and all at once instead.”

So here’s the thing, in the VC, the publication dates of the books ARE NOT NECESSARILY aligned with the chronological timeline of the set of stories described in the books. (This Timeline I found seems pretty accurate.)

  1. IWTV (published 1976) lays out Louis’ story (between approx. 1791 – 1975).
  2. TVL (published 1985) is Lestat’s story (between

    approx.

1766 – 1985) plus the origin story of the vampires (Ancient Egyptian times,

    approx.

    4000 BC).

  3. QOTD (published 1998) is Lestat’s story in 1985, it was a whirlwind Bad Romance.
  4. TOBT

(published 1992) is Lestat’s Body Dysmorphic Disorder episode, takes place in 1991.

  • And so on…

TL;DR, I see clear character development when I take in the larger view of all the stories. Some of the later canon books I might have preferred not to have happened, but OH WELL.

But character development in fictional characters (as with actual real people) =/= a clean line of improvement or deterioration. Lestat and Armand have both improved over time in many ways, but they’ve also lost good qualities. Lestat’s definitely lost a few marbles along the way.

Hit the jump for a little more, & spoilers.

For brevity, just gonna answer your question re:
“how the vamps change overtime, character wise? For example, say Lestat in TVL vs Lestat in body thief? Or even Armand in IWTV vs Armand in the later books.”

Lestat:

TVL!Lestat is feisty, freshly resurrected, appetite for destruction, wants to “correct the record” of IWTV by sharing the secrets that he couldn’t in IWTV, and establish himself as the actual protagonist of the series.

Approx. 10 years later in the timeline of the books, TOBT!Lestat is suffering emotionally from the blowback of what happened after sharing that information and trying to be a big shot, and he’s got ghost!Claudia on his back prodding him to consider whether he even deserves to continue vampiring ;A; when he’s so weak against his own impulses. He tries to suicide, and when that doesn’t work, has a renewed sense of belonging in the world. Then in TOBT, he fucks up pretty royally, relies on one best friend to help him get things back to normal, and then almost destroys that friendship by selfishly Forced-Dark-Gift-paying-it-forward. So I’d say that’s a lot of character development.

Armand:

IWTV!Armand was supposed to be intimidating and shrouded in mystery, the teacher/mentor for Louis that Lestat refused to be. Later, when we get Armand’s backstory in TVL, TVA, and B&G, we see his origins and how he got to be the manager of the Theatre Des Vampires, and however intimidating he might have been to Louis, that wasn’t remotely close to what he was like as the leader of the Children of Darkness, Parisian Chapter. So he’s had to adapt to alot of harsh situations, and find some sense of inner peace along the way.

Lestat and Armand are almost 2 sides of the same coin; Lestat was forced into the Dark Gift, Armand begged for it. Lestat had to learn how to vampire alone as an orphan, Armand had an overbearing teacher and was then kidnapped by a cult.

They’ve both had to deal with finding peace and a place for themselves in a world that doesn’t really need or want them, a struggle many of us readers can identify with as being part of our own character development over time.

this is ooc and i’m sorry but look. i feel like anne rice is totally dickish with her total ban on fanfiction/lack of interaction with fandom, etc, but 1. it’s her right to not want to participate in fandom and 2. she’s kind of right? at this point there are, off the top of my head, at least 2 hugely popular series right now that are complete rip-offs of other popular series (50 shades/twilight & mortal instruments/harry potter, both of which began as fanfics but are now almost —

[2nd ask sent] – almost entirely just a complete theft of the intellectual property that they started as fan-derivative works of. so i don’t know if half of what op claims is fair? because it’s true that anne rice chased away her online fandom with a broom, but it’s not totally baseless given the circumstances. she’s not just some crazy old lady imo. sorry again, i don’t want to start a fight but i don’t agree.

Okay, so this is a HUGE topic and I could write an essay and a half on all the issues raised, but it DOES sound like you’re trying to start a fight, partly bc you submitted this on Anon (and you started w/ “this is ooc” so it’s clear you’re an RPer, infringing on the VC copyright through RP, which is writing fanfic, for free!) and partly bc of your general tone, which in all fairness I could be misreading.

I’m not sure you totally understand AR’s War on Fanfic in the early-mid 90′s, or the actual points raised in the post you disagree with so strongly, so that’s why I’m taking the time to answer.

However, for everyone’s future reference: my policy has been to answer every Ask I get but that policy is changing NOW. If I get the feeling that a message is provocative in a negative way, I won’t answer it publicly. Privately, I might, if you come off Anon.

image

^Louis doesn’t really want to get involved in this discussion. It’s ok, just sit there and look pretty, hun, we’ll keep this brief.

For the record, there are 2 separate bloggers on the post you’re referring to

1) Original Poster

@loustat

asked a question, “Why is there so little Vampire Chronicles fan activity or content?” [X], and then;

2) @the-savage-nymph-art replied to that question [X]. Brilliantly and succinctly, I would add. They even provided one of the purposes of fanfic: to share headcanons. Whether in an AU, or PWP, etc., we’re exploring the characters through storytelling.

What @the-savage-nymph-art didn’t mention is that exploring canon through writing/sharing fanfic (both for-profit and not-for-profit, I assume) predates AR’s War on Fanfic. You can do your own research on that, but here’s a good article to start with, by Ewan Morrison.

And another great article by

Monika Bartyzel: talks about derivative works based on fanfic (it mentions 50 Shades & Twilight, too), but focusing on the Mortal Instruments. The thrust of the argument is that TMI was TOO derivative:

“…But until a story is willing to break through the boundaries of its inspiration and drop the mimicry in favor of its own voice, it will always be as derivative as its origins — no matter how many names you change.”

(^So there is a difference between fanfic that shares headcanons to explore, and fanfic that seems to merely mimic the canon it’s derived from.)

What @the-savage-nymph-art ALSO didn’t mention is that fanfic was shared for FREE when AR had her War on fanfic in the early-mid 90′s. This was to prevent the writing/sharing of fanfic that was not-for-profit. She was suing people because “It upsets me terribly to even think about fan fiction with my characters.” Not that she was concerned about the fanfic writers making money off their works, since they were being written/shared for FREE. Specs (short for “Speculative Fiction,” as they were called at that time) often had disclaimers at the top that the works were “written for love, not profit. Characters © Anne Rice” (and some fanfic authors continue to include these in various forms).

Anon, Anne Rice no longer has an issue with Fanfic. I don’t remember what year this was posted on FB but it was, and she hasn’t mentioned it since, that I’m aware of.

image

^So really, with that, the argument is kind of over.

But I am definitively saying, I run this blog as respectfully of Anne Rice as I can, w/ just a little light teasing bc we do that even to our own parents! she’s given us a great gift in the VC.

This blog is about positivity and inclusivity, and arguing over whether a derivative work is worthy of being considered worth standing alone as a separate work, that’s for the courts to decide on a case-by-case basis as we define what is a “derivative” work. There are some fanworks that I love so much that I WISH they were canon, that I WISH I could buy as a beautiful physical book to repay the creators for bringing me Such Feels!

Hit the jump for just a little more.

Anon’s argument has 2 points:

A) That fanfic written for fandom and then altered by changing the character names, etc. (aka ”filing the serial numbers off”, “Hermione” becomes “Eloise” or whatever) so that it can be sold for profit, is infringing on the copyright of the original creator. Anon mentions 2 examples that are making tons of money. I’ve heard of those series and the accusations of their beginnings as fanfic. I haven’t read them or followed the reviews about them though, so I can’t comment on whether or not they really are derivative works.

B) That Anne Rice is wrongfully accused of being “just some crazy old lady” in defense of the her VC copyright.

As per Anon’s point A), this is a nebulous thing, copyright law is still being worked out for it. It’s slowly developing on a case-by-case basis, and sometimes it’s settled out of court. Look at the Unofficial Harry Potter Encyclopedia case, for example. Not a fanfic, but still, a fanwork. The judge ruled that the

Unofficial Harry Potter Encyclopedia could be published for profit, in an abridged version of how it was originally intended to be, bc it served as a reference work, so it had value, but in its entirety it would have been

unfair competition w/ a similar work that J.K. Rowling intended to release (and she is still working on, years later).

As for your point B):

Nowhere in @the-savage-nymph-art‘s reply is Anne Rice referred to as “just some crazy old lady.” In fact, it was only you, Anon, who called her “dickish.”

Actually, there are several mocking references in @the-savage-nymph-art‘s commentary to those who write fanfic, in the usual Tumblrland Hyperbole™ kind of way, which is intended to grab your attention and add a little levity to a serious and saddening topic. Don’t you get the joke, Anon? Silliness! Or can you not take it as humorous when smne mentions “your gloriously blushing butt-cheeks” ?

I disagree with you, Anon. Anne Rice has given us an incredible gift. Yes, I have mentioned that she waged War on Fanfic. That’s a fact. It’s actual history.

Fanfic sold for money w/ the serial numbers filed off, (like 50 Shades does to Twilight and the Mortal Instruments *allegedly* does to Harry Potter) well, the creators of the original works have every right to pursue copyright protection! Have they, in these cases? Because the authors of 50 Shades and the Mortal Instruments seem to be doing fine, getting movie deals an all.

Maybe the authors of 50 Shades and the Mortal Instruments were sued and settled out of court.

But maybe, in these cases, the derivative work (as Anon calls them) was sufficiently AU of the fandoms they were adapted from to constitute enough originality to be considered works that stand on their own.

Let’s see what happens when someone writes fanfic w/ the serial numbers filed off based on 50 Shades and the Mortal Instruments!

Oh wait, 50 Shades already has a parody of it, 50 Shades of Black. Let’s get popcorn and see if a legal dispute fires up…

what they say: I’m fine
what they mean: Why is there so little Vampire Chronicles fan activity or content? Where is the fanbase? I understand that it’s older but the appeal is still massive. This is something that you can like for years and years and not get over. Why is it there aren’t hoards of new fans every year? What can you want more than beautiful bisexual vampires? I mean Anne Rice practically invented the modern vampire genre. There’s dozens of shows and book series that owe their creative careers to her. She is one of the bestselling writers of all time!!! The fact that there isn’t a bigger active fanbase especially since Prince Lestat’s release kind of blows my mind. I mean there was even a blockbuster motion picture with an allstar cast. How are there not more new young fans? How do we get more? Like I know so many people who have seen and enjoyed the movie but where is the huge cult following behind the film and the books?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

You Want to know why?
Because Anne Rice likes to sue your gloriously blushing butt-cheeks off if you DARE to produce fanfiction of her characters and works.
And most book based fandoms thrive from fanfiction, the telling of stories how it could be (or should be) or what might have happened IF ONLY…..
Then fanarts are created for said fanfictions and for the original books as well, if they have content that is worth ‘arting’ for. But Anne Rice isn’t loyal to her characters and one of the reasons she likes to sue fanfiction-writers is because they might have better ideas than she. Or the same and it might look like she was stealing that idea.

Then there is the fact that her books have lessened in quality with each new book. (An oppinion many of the fans I know share.)
From MY point of view… only two and a half books are even worth reading (out of thirteen)and one movie worth watching (“Interview with the Vampire”! I wouldn’t bother watching “Queen of the Damned”…), because she doesn’t care to check canon facts, names, dates and characters.
The only one she cannot possibly write OOC is Lestat, because he canonly is all over the place with his ego anyway.

This Fandom, for most parts, lives on Head-Canons. Like “Imagine Nicolas de Lenfent faked his death somehow” or “What if Akasha and Enkil had actually loved each other till the very end and they had a deal to come back together after her little interlude with Lestat and playing goddess”.
And how do you present your Head-Canons to the fanbase? Mostly through fanfiction. (Which you can get your pretty butt sued off for.)

Most activity in the VC-fandom is limited to roleplay and some fanart/cosplay. Because she hardly can sue that.
And that is why there is so little movement in the fandom. We enjoy what good she did (Creating the characters we love) in silence, keeping to ourself with few friends in many little covents, so to speak.

What’s the difference between Verses and AU’s?

This is a good question and it took me awhile to figure out the difference (and I might be wrong, so other ppl can reblog w/ their own explanation).

image

The confusion is bc “Verse” is an abbreviation for “universe,” and “AU” is an abbreviation for “Alternate Universe.” The difference is mainly in that the former is usually applied to RP and the latter is usually applied to fanfic and fanart, but both words can be used for both.

A “Verse” (lots of different words for this, different RPers make them up) is more for RPers, bc it’s a time period set in canon, or a non-canon time period chosen between the RPers who are roleplaying together.

– So you can have a Louis RPer and a Lestat RPer referring to “Verse:One Happy Family” (or whatever name they choose for it), which refers to the time period in canon in which those muses were living with Claudia and all three of them were happy, before Claudia started to actually grow up.

– Or, you can have a Verse that is NOT in canon, like “Verse:Italian Tales” (or whatever name they choose for it) in which a Gabrielle RPer and an OC RPer are roleplaying stories from Gabrielle’s childhood in Italy, which was not explicitly written about in canon.

An "Alternate Universe” is more typically used in fanfic or fanart in which the characters and canon have been rearranged somehow, like a female!Lestat, or the idea like: Enkil awoke in 1984 and he is mindlessly on the warpath, terrorizing the world, and Akasha is trying to enlist the other vampires to help stop him. My fave AUs are ones in which lots of canon, fanon, or headcanon is part of the story.

– There is an incomplete fanfic on AO3 called The Grim Brothers that basically casts the VC characters into a Grim’s fairy tale, and they are not vampires in it, but some things from canon are retained or reworked: Louis and David are stepbrothers, which is technically sort of true!
