New book! I still need to read Prince Lestat too…. oh well. Now that I have a job I can buy them, lol. I also wanted to tell you I made my cousin watch IWTV for the first time last night! Lestat was her fave but she felt sad for Claudia and Louis too.

Take your time, there’s no rush. Books are patient creatures.

Bringing your cousin into this: yesssss, fresh blood for the fandom ^______^

It’s endlessly amusing to me that Lestat is the real winner in that movie, bc Tom made him so lovable despite the cruelty he inflicts on everyone around him, and Brad solidified many ppl’s impression of Louis as a sad-sack and Kirsten made Claudia well… someone who deserved all the sympathy.

Hello~! I’ve been reading The Vampire Chronicles slowly but surely and sort of lurking in the wonderful fandom all the while. I’m currently reading Queen of the Damned and finding it very hard to get through. Do you think I’m alone in that? I love the characters but my goodness lestat is given power after power and Maharet drones on and on for goodness knows how many pages, I want to get through it because I love the series! But do you think I’m alone in finding QOTD hard to finish?

Hello! Welcome to our little corner of tumblrland…

I’ve been holding this message for awhile bc there are parts I don’t like that much either. There are parts that are boring, problematic, or other reasons not to like it.

Some ppl in the fandom actually HATE Lestat w/ a burning passion. They read the series for their love of other characters. There are ppl who adore Armand and pretty much just focus on his book and read the other books for snippets about him, which is totally fine!

Any story/movie/music/etc. (including VC) is like a bruised banana. Can you eat around the parts you don’t like and still enjoy the banana? I can. No one is forcing you to eat the whole thing. Skip the parts you really don’t like. You can always go back and read them another time.

What do you love about the series? Just stick with that!

Spoilerishness under the cut.

I’d say that skipping means you might miss out on something, tho.

Maharet’s information is good because it offers insight as to why Akasha is the way she is, and why she treats ppl the way she does. It’s good bc it sheds more light on the vampire origin story that will be developed much later in Prince Lestat. It’s good bc Maharet is one of the matriarchs of the species and she is a well-written female character in a series dominated by men.

Lestat’s getting new powers but each upgrade pulls him further away from the humanity he so desperately wants back, so the trade off, and how he deals with that later, is all good stuff. He’s uncomfortable exercising his new abilities. These upgrades also make him incompatible for Louis, who doesn’t want the powers or enhanced durability, so from QOTD onwards (until a later book in the series), Louis won’t drink Lestat’s blood. This makes bloodsharing (which is the Ricean form of intimacy) for them completely one-sided; Lestat can take blood from Louis but not give it back ;A;

This isn’t so much of a question as it is a compliment. Thank you for being so sweet and accepting, and hilariously Lestat-like with others questions! I have been a fan of the books for so many years but was always so intimidated by its fan base, enjoying from the shadows, as it were. I hope I do not erroneously think it safe to come out of my hiding place (sort of…) with this comment!

Omg what a thing to say to me thank u so much! *flails* YOU ARE SO WELCOME AS ALWAYS. You’re still on anon, so you’re not risking anything, but feel free to step into the light. What have you got to lose?

[X digging up an oldie from the archive, mon dieu using Impact was still in fashion! But the sentiment is still true.

It’s especially flattering that you say I answer things in a hilariously Lestat-like way bc his positive attributes were an inspiration to me when, as a small fanged little trash kitten, I needed that so much. I feel more like myself when I’m interacting w/ ppl with some of his brand of optimism and charisma, which was not so much that I absorbed his, it was more that I recognized it was always there inside me, latent and sleeping, and needed to be reignited ;D

Plus, we all had to hide our love for this fandom in the dark ages before the internet really brought us together, and then some of us also suffered the war on fanfic. Unlike many other current fandoms, ours was crushed and couldn’t blossom until more recent years. I’m so grateful that we have these spaces now and that fandom is recognized as a more legitimate thing these days, we have more than shadowed spaces now! It’s very Lestat in TVL, drawing the Children of Darkness out into the modern world to enjoy the things that are out here to be enjoyed.

“Just remember: life – without me- would be even more unbearablewill always be one of my fave quotes bc there were times when it was very true, and currently, VC is still a positive presence for me, and it’s heartwarming to know it’s that way for others, like you, too! *hugs*

That is what I want as my legacy, just remember that I was crazy and I made you happy, and/or inspired you in at least some small way, bc that’s what VC has done for me.

Cut for sappiness…

^AU where I am Mrs. Lincoln and the rest of the fandom here is Mr. Lincoln ❤ bc that is what I want as my legacy, just remember that I was crazy and I made you happy.

I feel kind of married to this fandom and I treat it that way, like a significant other. We’re our own individual ppl but I like to think we compliment eachother; we all have our own talents to contribute, even if being an audience member for the fanworks is all some of us do.

Sometimes we fight, and there are times we disagree with canon, but we get through things regardless bc there’s a shared loyalty there and that’s a beautiful and precious thing. It’s fragile, too, and needs our commitment to survive.

I may feel bad for saying this, but I really, kind of don’t want there to be more movies. I know TVC is underappreciated but I really like that it’s a book fandom, book only (apart from 2 movies but w/e) and I just don’t want movies to cheapen it or represent the books in a bad light or for it to get overly popular- or the worst scenario- for it to be associated with the vampires of today *shivers*

I know what you mean, Louis would probably agree w/ you for similar (or the same!) reasons why he wants Lestat to stop writing any more books or authorizing his ghostwriter to do so.

[I just don’t want movies to cheapen it or represent the books in a bad light…]

^So I think Josh Boone is going to handle the material very respectfully, looking at the way he tagged up the Stand for that adaptation, he clearly is treating that book like it’s the Bible for that project *u* We’ll see how the Stand fandom (what do they call themselves? now I’m curious) reacts when that adaptation comes out, as my Dad says, “The proof is in the pudding.”

Hit the jump for more response, cut for length.

[…or for it to get overly popular-]

^It might get overly popular! We might have overly fanatic fans! But we can handle that, we already deal with having the Facebook factions of the VC fandom, some of which are pretty zealous in their loyalty to AR, and from what they ask her (like ”Is Lestat really bisexual/gay???”) I wonder how they read the same books as we did. Just bc there’s more interest in it doesn’t mean you have to participate w/ the influx.

We also had an influx when Prince Lestat came out, and they seem to be absorbing into our ranks alright.

[…or the worst scenario- for it to be associated with the vampires of today *shivers*]

^Comparisons will be made to other vampire media, reviewers will review, haters gonna hate. You can tune all that out. Boone knows it will be held to the standard of movie!IWTV, and the standard of all his fave vampire media, so I’m sure he won’t invest the time and effort into smtg he knows can’t handle that level of scrutiny.

In general, I think @phoenifia/@firelight-fading put it really well in their post here, which I will quote some lines from, (I bolded a few things for emphasis):

I think everyone needs to keep in mind that everyone doesn’t share a collective mind- everyone read these books individually so everyone is going to have a different opinion on how certain plot events happened and how certain characters look. Boone is one of those people and he’s the one in control of how this film will look and develop…

#Your headcanon may vary 😉

On that note, just because a new film is coming out doesn’t mean that the values of past productions, like the IWTV movie with Tom Cruise, decrease. You can still enjoy it. You can still view Tom Cruise as the “perfect” Lestat. You can still choose to ignore the new film. What the new film does mean for the fandom is possible growth. Old loves for the books series will be rekindled and people will hopefully return. New fans will emerge who enjoy the film or are curious about the books. Considering Rice has lessened her hold on fanfiction restriction, that means more fanworks will possibly be generated. Lots of good things on the way even if the film is a flop.

So all in all, stay positive, go see the film to support Rice and the series if anything and if you don’t like it then it’s a done deal and you can fall back on other VC-related works. We’ll get through this irregardless.

^We’ll get through this irregardless *hugs*

Hey Lestat, just curious… the song Sahara, by Nightwish. Any chance it’s actually one of yours? Because I stg it sounds so much like it’s about Marius and Akasha that it gives me chills, and I can’t help but laugh at the thought that maybe you let Nightwish record it so that you could sneak one more song past the rest of the coven. ;P

♛It is a good song and good ear, anonymous person! I won’t confirm or deny *smiles* That’s one of my little secrets… I do collaborate with musicians, but under pseudonyms. If they knew they were working with the famous Rock Superstar Vampire Lestat, they might hold back creatively, or get all overly obsequious, or both, and I wouldn’t want that. So stifling.

The coven does not, generally, support my original musical compositions, probably because they are envious of my incredible talent with it. Especially with lyrics.

image

That’s their loss. I don’t bring them along to the recording studio anymore.

I mean sure, they’ll ask me to play Chopin or Haydn or whatever at gatherings, they know I can’t refuse. So I’ll throw in some improvisation until they catch on and beg me to go back to the music as written.
