//ooc; I’m going to have to stop this right here bc Lestat doesn’t want to address it all. You’re picking on him for gently picking on you for signing off w/ one initial bc that would have been Louis’ indicator that Lestat wasn’t sending himself anons bc Lestat comes up w/ these ridiculous aliases in canon, so we both just… cannot continue. There’s other Lestats to RP more realistically with 😛
(Also, I haven’t read that book, and I don’t know much about it, so my Lestat is sort of lost on that, too, when canon Lestat probably at least has thoughts on it.)
No, I’m not planning on going anywhere without a big flowery announcement, trust me! I’ve been in this fandom for 20+ years and on tumblr since July 2013, I’m stuck here for the long haul, it seems.
(If I ever mysteriously disappear, I’ll give my online whereabouts to @annabellioncourt and @merciful-death to share with you all.)
Oh my gosh, well… I waited 6 hours, but there was no further message, so I’m just going to answer now.
“I don’t know how to feel about Anne…”
Respectfully, I’m not going to tell you how to feel about Anne Rice. I must regretfully decline.
I know how I feel about her: that she has given us a wonderful gift and that she has committed no actual crime for which she would deserve to be boycotted. We can poke fun at her, at her books, we can critique them, bc she has set herself and her works for public review. We can feel distrustful for her past behavior towards the fandom and distrustful of her handling of her own characters. Those are all within our rights as a critical public.
I always recommend that people read the books and draw their own conclusions about them on their own merits. It’s part of what makes fandom great, that we can agree on some things, disagree on others, and have lively discussions about it all.
What I will tell you is that you don’t have to like Anne Rice to read her stories. To my knowledge, she has not committed ANYREAL LIFE ACTUAL CRIMES. People boycott actual criminals bc we do not want to financially or morally support them. IMO, Anne Rice should NOT be lumped in with REAL LIFE ACTUAL CRIMINALS.
It is not a crime that she waged war on fanfic. It was incredibly painful and it shattered the fandom, and drove us all underground for years ;A; But she was within her legal rights. Keep in mind that fandom was not really socially acceptable or understood like it is today, authors understand now that fanworks are types of fan engagement with canon and each other. She seems to understand that now, or if not, she at least ignores fanfic.
It is not a crime that she waged war on reviewers. Also painful and oppressive at the time, AR used to be very offended by critical or negative reviews of her books, and would sic her People of the Page on reviewers. Again, she now seems to understand that people are within their rights to critique her work and she can ignore them.
What she writes is not an actual crime. She has problematic elements and explores taboo subjects in her writing, refuses any editor’s advice, refuses anyone’s idea of what she should write. That’s her prerogative as a ‘music maker,’ as a ‘dreamer of dreams’ (<– like Willy Wonka!). To argue that any of her writing is a crime is, to me, a form of censorship, and I do not believe in censorship of fiction.
^^^^None of these are Real Life actual crimes. Personally, I may not accept all of her writing as canon, and I may poke fun at it, too, that’s my prerogative as a reader.
The idea that all art should be entirely unproblematic all the time…kills art. Like, I really don’t think we as readers have some all-solemn duty to constantly make sure we’re only having the ~right~ kind of fun.
But that’s just my opinion. You’ll have to draw your own conclusions and decide whether you want to financially/morally support Anne Rice by buying/reading her books, or not.
It isn’t a reference to that, just a coincidence! It’s the caution tape at a construction site. I hope it’s ok that I accidentally made that reference, tho… I don’t remember that site, tho the author names are familiar.
^I was thinking of keeping the cat somewhere in the new layout and changing the hat for different holidays tho! ❤
Maybe I should go back to the old header so it’s not so glaring. Part of the reason it’s been like that for SO VERY LONG is that a new layout is under construction on a secret side-blog, and I’m not using that code until I’m happy with it. The overall color scheme & aesthetic is also very different than the current aesthetic and I’m not sure I’m ready to move into the new look :-
Also my webmistress insists on the tags being on the bottom center of posts and I vehemently disagree!! That’s not how I use my tags, I sometimes have a whole extra dialogue in the tags… *Grrrr*…
Those things in the new book: Atlantis, aliens, our vampires, etc. are intriguing separately. There’s no doubt about that.
When I was 11 years old, I loved choc. syrup and baloney sandwiches, and let me tell you… choc. syrup ON a baloney sandwich? My brother and tried it and…../no/. We didn’t like it, but I am sure that there’s someone out there who probably LOVES choc. syrup on baloney sandwiches! I hope they use potato bread, at least, it’s cake-ier than white bread.
I always advise people to read the books before they judge them, but as I pointed out in that post w/ Michael Gavin’s review, some people do judge before they read. Gavin read it, and that was his opinion. I shared that link and excerpt bc a friend had shared it w/ me, and also, many of the other reviews I’ve seen so far are recaps which may contain spoilers.
BTW, I’ll be making a masterpost of PLROA recaps, please send me an ask/message me if you did/are doing recaps!
[X Louis has an easy checklist for a good evening.]
This is just a fandom blog, and yes, I do share criticism of the books on here. Criticism =/= censorship. I’m sorry that one bad review could prevent you from reading a book. There are other VC blogs (#VC fandom hunters) that you can reach out to, maybe they’ll respond differently.
The thing is, yes, you actually might hate it! BUT, there may be one line in it that you love, and that will have made the book worth reading.
It’s just a book though. It’s not the end of the world.
Yes indeedy there will be a legit post! Altho I have been feeding u little bits from it already 😉 For now have this:
^Can u guess which one is me? I AM IN THE RED VELVET SHE DID NOT EVEN COMMENT and also the lighting on her is better than on me but whatever whatever it’s all fine.
AR has the rights back to the VC to make adaptations, the new book is crackier more imaginative!! than we ever could have imagined, there’s an official VC FB asking for casting suggestions and some have been… also imaginative (did I hear Orlando Bloom suggested for Armand? And Sebastian Stan for Louis?)…
I love that we’re all excited and horrified and stimulated by all this! IDK KNOW WHAT TO TELL U OR ADVISE YOU I CANNOT EVEN I DON’T KNOW MY OWN HEART ON THIS IT’S SO FRUSTRATE it’s a good frustrate tho. Like trying not to scratch a mosquito bite but if feels so good to do it but you know you’re making things worse, even when it starts to bleed it feels good!! that’s sort of how I feel.
^yah so I don’t have access to any photoshoppin’ tools rn but whatever… that is yours truly and @roselioncourt.
So LOTS of things happening and tbh I’m a little overwhelmed by all the info we’ve gotten in the last week, and the posts in response, some of which I’ve seen… and I was trying to keep up w/ it all on my phone the whole frickin’ time it was happening (I have 100+ tabs open *laughcries* and the phone is not a happy camper)… it’s a little overwhelming.
As Ron Swanson famously said: “Never half-ass two things. Whole-ass one thing.” I’m gonna whole-ass all the things when I have the time this weekend, I got all your messages and plan to do massive replies. Also need to make a post about the PLROA booksigning, I took notes (altho there is a video of it on the official VC FB).
… I also have to read the new book (!!!)… I asked for spoilers and you should know that I *facepalmed* or “Oh, Anne”’d at almost every new piece of canon information.
