Hello, I need the VC fandoms help remembering something. In the IWTV movie, there are the scenes where claudia has dolls and rejects them, and where she cuts her hair and learns it does not grow back. Question: where were these in the books?(1 of 2)

(2 of 2) I remember these scenes somewhere in the books pretty vividly, but I just reread IWTV over again and couldnt find them. Did i dream them being in the books after years of watching the movie?

So actually, I couldn’t remember either, so I just skimmed IWTV, and neither actually happened quite that way in that book. But it’s still sort of canon bc Anne Rice wrote the script, and she was trying to incorporate later canon stuff where she could.

In QOTD, Claudia mentions it in her diary: “Of course, he gave me a doll as usual, the replica of me, which as always wears a duplicate of my newest
dress. To France he sends for these dolls, he wants me to know. And what should I do with it? Play with it
as if I were really a child?…

He has given me thirty such dolls over the years if recollection serves me…

They would crowd me out of my bedroom if I
kept them. But I do not keep them. I burn them, sooner or later. I smash their china faces with the poker. I
watch the fire eat their hair.”

[X] In IWTV, Claudia crushes a doll in front of Louis and she talks about being disappointed in baby dolls… she was pretty spoiled by her dads, so I would bet she got them at other times than just her “birthday,” too! Maybe the fanciest ones were received annually.

^The haircut thing is actually something Gabrielle experienced in TVL. She had cut it and the next night it had grown back to its full length it had been when she died:

Her long heavy hair had slipped over
her shoulders again, and exasperated, she took hold of it in both
hands. Then suddenly she made a low hissing sound, and her body
went rigid. She was holding her long tresses and staring at them.

“My God, ” she whispered. And then in a spasm, she let go of her
hair and screamed.

The sound paralyzed me. It sent a flash of white
pain through my head. I had never heard her scream. And she
screamed again as if she were on fire.

can we add a ‘gabrielle de lincourt’s A+ parenting’ tag into this fandom?? because i saw the ‘howard stark’s A+ parenting’ in aou & i think gabs deserves one too

Lol I know right? I do have Lestat’s A+ Parenting…

But Gabrielle does come to the rescue when she’s needed!

[Indiana Gabrielle by @miyucchichan]

“I imagine in this moment Louis thinking “It’s not how I imagined to met my mother in law” xDD “

Some things Lestat learned from Gabrielle were good, tho, like giving really thoughtful gifts at the right time. Actually he gives gifts far more often and extravagantly than she ever could bc he became richer than she had been and also he came to associate materialism w/ ownership and love, and that giving someone things could possibly *~buy their affection~*. 60% of the time, it works all the time 😉

Gabrielle was not the worst parent. She was possibly a very introverted person further pushed into herself bc she was focused on surviving the situation she was put in. Locked in a loveless marriage in a freezing castle in the middle of nowhere. She’d lost 5 of her children, and by the time Lestat came around, I’m not surprised she didn’t give him much affection; she probably couldn’t bring herself to invest in him emotionally when the odds were so high that he would never live to adulthood ;A;

HOWEVER, on the good parenting side:

  • she defended him against his father and brothers,
  • she supported him going to school at the nearby monastery to get literate and have a better environment “with people who
believed I could be good if I wanted to be.”
    ;A;
  • she gave over her precious family heirlooms to buy him the dogs, mare, and gun that would take his hunting skillz to the next level,
  • which led to his ultimate triumph over the wolves…
  • she encouraged him to run away to Paris,
  • and then stayed with him for a good decade exploring the world, before she finally went off on her own.

Idk if I agree that she treated him SO badly, though she could have shown kid!Lestat a little more affection, he was starved for it. I think she did the best she could given her own personality and their environment.

thevampireforthesetimes:

Wait, I fixed it.

^ I did this last night but now that I know it’s @i-want-my-iwtv ‘s birthday I dedicate this trash musing to you, you wonderful person. ❤ Enjoy and incestuous vampire birthday laugh.

The fact that this book exists at all is too funny, but the VC version of it is… just… besides, Gabrielle “Ew Don’t Call Me ‘Mother’” de Lioncourt is partially at fault here okay???! And Lestat, your Oedipus is showing…

btw that’s Armand in the doorway… the real reason Lestat wouldn’t let him join them…

I just saw your post/meme thing that reminded me that Lestat is half Italian! He enjoys being so French! So why do you think he embraces more of his French heritage, his father’s lineage? I understand he grew up in France and was raised essentially French, but I would think that with his resentment towards his male family members he’d be much more incline to learn about his mother’s heritage.

Yes, he is! I would bet that he currently loves to learn about Italian culture, interior decorating, and he definitely loves the fashion. I imagine he’d have several wardrobe changes during his wedding, but this suit would definitely be in the rotation LOOK IT EVEN COMES W/ A TOP HAT AND CANE:

[X ONGala: Italian Baroque Wedding Suit]

Lestat’s resentment doesn’t necessarily last forever. He talks about sending gifts and money to his family, and he even has a dream about turning all of them into vampires whether this is really more of a nightmare is left up to our interpretation 😛

It’s strange, while it’s true that he resents his male family members, he had a kind of resentment towards his mother, too (TVL):

I wanted to
tell her a lot of things, how much I loved her particularly. But I was
cautious. She had a way of cutting me off when I spoke to her, and
mingled with my love was a powerful resentment of her. All my life I’d
watched her read her Italian books and scribble letters to people in
Naples, where she had grown up, yet she had no patience even to teach
me or my brothers the alphabet.
And nothing had changed after I
came back from the monastery. I was twenty and I couldn’t read or
write more than a few prayers and my name. I hated the sight of her
books; I hated her absorption in them.

It appears that he would have loved to learn about her side of the family during his childhood, but for her own reasons, she chose to withhold that information ;A;

Do you think these bitches are like, punctual? Sure, they don’t have the bussiest agendas, but when they do have commitments or something, do they get there on time? Can you like, make a list? Most to least punctual? Weird question, but I’m curious.

I agree, weird question, but honey, ucametotherightplace ^________^

Vampiring can be very busy! All the entertainment (concerts, galleries, fashion shows), the charity balls, the netflix & chills, and they still have to wedge murder in, too.

[@vampchronfic helped out on this answer! Much appreciated *u*]

Jesse and Pandora arrive early and always ask the host(ess) if they need any help setting anything up.

David and Marius are always on time. Perfectly.

Louis is on time when he is not being dragged into lateness by Lestat.

Armand is variable; sometimes on time, sometimes fashionably late, but he always leaves first. His reasons are never questioned.

Daniel is on time when he goes with Marius or Armand, but on his own, always late (still consistently arrives before Lestat).

Lestat is always late bc he takes forever to dress up and dress Louis up and is easily distracted. It’s gotten to the point where Brian* has to lie that an event is an hour earlier than it really is just to get Lestat there /close/ to the starting time.

David chastises Lestat every time, Lestat laughs and laughs. David sends Lestat fancy watches with alarms set, accompanied by notes like, “So you’ll know the time. At ANY altitude.”

(*Brian Callahan is one of @vampchronfic‘s OC’s that I have come to aggressively accept into my headcanon.)

Gabrielle is never expected to go to anything (she moves around too much to be sent an invite and pays no attention anyway) unless she is in the presence of someone who got an invitation. She has little tolerance for mingling, but she does like David. They swap travel stories and he can usually impress her with his depth of knowledge of ancient ruins and natural wonders.

Who would you cast in a gender bent version of the chronicles? Eva Green is my top nomination

Eva Green for which character? I confess I haven’t done a whole lot of consideration for this bc genderswapping is very hard if you’re doing it for serious, but I threw some together for fun *u*

image

^Louise de Pointe du Lac maybe? She has death-glares down to a science, she has the right kind of delicate but strong features, and a lot of dignity about her.

image

^Taylor Swift for Lestelle de Lioncourt [bc of this post right here] – I’m sorry @queenofthesavagegarden, Margot Robbie is beautiful and a great second option, but for me, Taylor is also a singer and that’s a big part of the requirement for me! ;A;

image

^Kristen Stewart as Nicola de Lenfent if she would be willing to play another vampire! A sassy one, this time. In a lesbian ship.

Hit the jump for moar.

image

^Gillian Anderson as the cruel bully Marquise Valerie de Lioncourt.

image

^David Bowie as Gabriel de Lioncourt (hey you didn’t say they had to be available ;A;) CAN U IMAGINE if Taylor!Lestat got to turn her dad, Bowie!Gabrielle?? How magical??!

image

^Sendhil Ramamurthy as Akashad, King of the Damned.

image

^We have fanart of Mariella de Romanus and Andrea? Hmmm? [Source unknown]

image

^Angelina Jolie as Maelia? Hmm? Druid priestess?

^My dream choice for genderswapped Maharet & Mekare. Stefano Masciolini. [X]

He could play both H’Maret & Kemare. Those sound like more masculine names.

Can vampires in the VC series be awake/get up during the day? I was watching IWTV and there’s the scene where Claudia gets up (in the day) to get into Louis’s coffin. I can’t remember anything about it being mentioned in the books (other than some ancients) but I know that in fanfiction, once dawn comes they pretty much are compelled to go to sleep.

Ricean vampires, unfortunately, are condemned to enjoy the Deathsleep which renders them unconscious for the daylight hours. The plus side being: no snoring can wake them! Not that they can snore, since they don’t breathe. But still.

image

Louis, IWTV: “Numbness came over my limbs, and then the paralysis of oblivion.“

Louis, IWTV: “You see, I wasn’t sure then why I awoke each evening when I did, whether it was automatic when the deathlike sleep left me, and why it happened sometimes earlier than at other times.”

In movie!IWTV, yes, Claudia is awake right at dawn and seems fully conscious, as she tiptoes carefully around the sunlight.

image

^It was too perfect a moment not to include in a movie about lonely ppl, that singular act of a daughter climbing into bed w/ her mommy!Louis (bc we all know he’s the mom) rather than sleep alone! ❤ And purely platonic at that point in the movie.

There is a fic out there that suggests that Ricean vampires do awaken during the day when they are under extreme emotional duress, and it’s a very disorienting state to be in, they can’t function very rationally, as nocturnal animals also act erratically in daylight.

Hit the jump for a bit moar, and spoilers.

(Similarly, Louis seems to be painfully awake as Claudia and Madeleine burn in the sunlight ;A;)

When movie!Louis takes revenge on the Theatre des Vampires, it’s right before dawn, and he is perfectly able to function right up until he leaves the safety of the theatre, and it’s the sunlight more than the fact that it’s daytime that saps him of any functionality. But that was part of the plan, revenge, then suicide.

image

Ricean vampires can, however, fight in that unconscious state: Lestat says Gabrielle defended herself in her sleep: “And those mortals who did find us during the daylight hours, unless they exposed us to the sun at once, were doomed. For example, outside Palermo she had slept in a cellar far below an abandoned house, and when she had awakened, her eyes and face were burning as if they had been scalded, and she had in her right hand a mortal, quite dead, who had apparently attempted to disturb her rest.”

Amount of sleep needed seems to be related to the age and/or power of the vampire, and Louis, being weaker, needs more beauty sleep than the older and stronger ones.

Even in a place like Alaska in which nighttime extends during the winter months, Ricean vampires are still susceptible and want to fall into a reasonable Deathsleep rhythm.

In QOTD, Akasha purposely chases the night around the world, preventing Lestat from falling into the Deathsleep. Whether it was bc she had too much to do in too little time, or she was purposely using sleep deprivation as another means of controlling him (or both), we don’t know, but Lestat reflects on it:

“We’d been following the night around the world, perhaps, or rather moving at random in it, as Akasha maybe didn’t need at all to sleep.

I needed it, that was obvious. But I was too curious not to want to be awake. And frankly too miserable.”

Akasha tells him, a little bit later, that he requires sleep for his upgrades: “But you must sleep now. You are young still and fragile. My blood’s working on you, changing you, perfecting you.”

Vampires in other media, like Only Lovers Left Alive for example, CAN stay awake during the daylight hours if they feel like it, and they do sleep in beds. Are they trying to imitate mortals? Maybe!
