Those sound like a lot of really positive changes. I can start sending you questions when I think of them–my main topic of contemplation is what would be the science behind burning in the sun? Prince Lestat missed a huge opportunity to answer a lot of questions and if you want me to, I can send you all of my questions regarding Anne Rice’s vampires and the traits of vampires in general. Sorry for not being more active!

askavampirologist-blog:

Well, I can not answer questions in the book about Anne Rice’s vampires, as that is copyrighted stuff right there, but you are more than welcome to ask me anything you want. Though I am not an expert in Anne Rice’s vampires. If you want to talk to an expert, I would turn you towards i-want-my-iwtv

And as for the science behind burning in the sun, well, the first vampire to actually be effected by the sunlight to the point of death was Count Orlok in Nosferatu. The reason he disappears in the sun was to avoid copyright infringement on the ending of Dracula. So historically speaking, there is no lore to suggest that vampires would actually burn in the sun. In Dracula his powers were weakened but he did not burn. I think the main idea that vampires hunted at night is because humans slept at night, which left hours of mystery around what happened in the dark. If someone died in the night, or got sick in the night, they had no clue what caused it. It was much easier to think a creature from beyond the grave did it because the darkness is scary and science was lacking.

But if we want to say sure, vampires burn in the sun, we have to think “why?” The first reason might be the same reason I burn in the sun. They are pale. Pale people burn in the sun. Another reason could be because they are damned, and as such are not allowed to live in the illumination of God. God created light, after all. And if you think about it, Lucifer is known as the Morning Star, so it makes sense that vampires would have to live under the light of the stars.

Hope that answers your question for now! I will go into further detail in the book.

I have a tag for that (#vampire physiology), which includes Ricean and non-Ricean vampire phys. discussion bc it intrigues me, too! Always feel free to send me these questions 😀

I think that above explanation works for the Ricean vampires. Something to do with the amount of melatonin in the skin that protects humans (well even pale humans prefer to wear sunscreen!) that is lacking in even dark-skinned vampires. Plus:

  • Vampire blood is also more flammable than human blood… when they describe drinking it, it has a notably different (fiery?) taste/texture “Like light itself,” I think is how Lestat described it.
  • Their bodies are described as physically less heavy than human bodies, and that could be because 75% of the human body is made up of water. Vampires do not need water (outside of its use in blood transport, I guess?) so I’m thinking they lost much of the water-weight when they were turned, and are now relatively dry creatures. Making for excellent firewood!

The religious aspect works, too, in that they should not be allowed to enjoy the sunlit world anymore, but not all Ricean vampires believe in the same god or even in any god at all.

[I know you’re busy as hell right now with real life stuff so I just want to send you some virtual hugs and thank you for making all of the hilarious memes and graphics. They make me laugh so hard. <3]

omg thank u! Much appreciated. Notes like these give me such joy.

If you are interested in where I’ve been, hit the jump…

I started a new job 2 weeks ago… the lead up to it was a month of difficulty, because I had to complete the interview process for the new place (3 interviews!), train my replacement, and tie up loose ends at my old job. Needless to say there were alot of unpaid late nights and I was too exhausted to do much fandom.
And then, of course, Prince Lestat dropped. So I’ve been trying to read that slowly and painfully, to comb out little gems. There are bits and lines here and there that are actually good. I’ll be pulling them and sharing them at some point. If you guys think that entire book is a trainwreck, you’re not wrong, but I play the Devil’s Advocate about EVERYTHING, so this is included. I do see little glimmers of the Lestat we know and love in there… I’ll be sharing those bits when I can do so.
Along those lines, I’m thinking of starting a new Dreamwidth account purely for my thoughts on PL and any other new books in the series… and I’ll link to new posts there. I owe you guys recaps of my PL read.
Ya, so that’s my story! Thought you might want to know what happened to me. I still need to figure out a balance between fandom and RL. It’ll happen.

The night was rolling to an end. The paparazzi had retreated to their coffins and lairs. I told David he could keep my suite at the hotel as long as he liked, and I had to head home soon.

But not quite yet. We’d been walking in the Grand Couvert of the Tuileries—in tree-shrouded darkness. “I’m thirsting,” I said aloud. At once he suggested where we might hunt.

“No, for your blood,” I said, pushing him backwards against the slender but firm trunk of a tree.

“You damnable brat,” he seethed.

“Oh, yes, despise me, please,” I said as I closed in. I pushed his face to one side, kissing his throat first, and then sinking my fangs very slowly, my tongue ready for those first radiant drops. I think I heard him say the single word, “Caution,” but once the blood struck the roof of my mouth, I wasn’t hearing clearly or seeing clearly and didn’t care.

I had to force myself to pull back. I held a mouthful of blood as long as I could until it seemed to be absorbed without my swallowing, and I let those last ripples of warmth pass through my fingers and toes.

“And you?” I asked. He was slumped there against the tree, obviously dizzy. I went to take him in my arms.

“Get away from me,” he growled. And started off walking, fast away from me. “Stick your filthy droit du seigneur right through your greedy heart.”

But I caught up with him and he didn’t resist when I put my arm around him and we walked on together like that.

“Now, that’s an idea,” I said, kissing him quickly though he stared forward and continued to ignore me. “If I was ‘King of the Vampires,’ I’d make it the right of every maker to drink from his fledgling anytime he chose. Maybe it would be good to be king. Didn’t Mel Brooks say, ‘It’s good to be the king’?”

And then in his droll cultured British voice he said with uncharacteristic brashness, “Kindly shut up.”

[—-]

I had turned to leave him when he took hold of me. His teeth went into the artery before I could think what was happening, and his arms went tight around my chest.

His pull was so strong that I swooned. Seems I turned and put my arms around him, catching his head in my left hand, and struggled with him, but the visions had opened up, and I didn’t know one realm from the other for a moment, and the manicured paths and trees of the Tuileries had become the Savage Garden of all the world. I’d fallen into a divine surrender, with his heart pounding against my heart. There was no restraint in him, no caution such as I’d shown in feeding on him.

I came to myself on the ground, my back to the trunk of a young chestnut tree, and he was gone. And the mild balmy night had turned to a gray winter dawn.

Home I went—to my “undisclosed location,” only minutes away on the currents of the wind, to ponder what I’d learned from my friends because I couldn’t do anything else.

The next night on rising, I caught the scent of David on my jacket, even on my hands.

In b4 someone writes tentacle porn

but what about iPhone?!

iPhone appears 22 times. Which is a lot considering no one knows how to use one.
