That’s a great quote, anon, and a very good question *u*
[^by @garama and the illustration is more appropriate than you think; they are probably slinging insults back and forth telepathically!]
This quote was actually Armand talking to Lestat about Gabrielle and Nicolas (Lestat had not even met Louis and Claudia yet), and how foolish it was for Lestat to expect either of them to actually want to stay with him. AS IF?! We as readers also add in the fact that it could apply to Louis and Claudia, since we already know that further down the line, yes, they will choose to leave their maker.
Armand’s point is that no matter carefully chosen, every fledgling will inevitably leave their maker. The quote actually begins with: “Each time the death and the awakening will ravage the mortal spirit,” and then he goes into more reasons why the fledglings and makers end up parting. Gabrielle left because she wanted something Lestat couldn’t give her. Nicolas left for a number of reasons, some variation of madness could be part of it. Armand speaks with the knowledge of seeing many fledglings made, and he might even feel like he would not have chosen to stay with his own maker forever, if he had had the choice.
When Armand says “And the veil will always come down between you,” that’s about the fact that the telepathic connection that can exist between vampires and mortals
(vampire!Lestat could communicate telepathically with mortal!Gabrielle before she was turned)
will be lost with the Dark Gift*
Armand had it with mortal!Daniel.
It’s a deeply intimate connection and many makers and fledglings mourn its loss.
Armand is basically saying that you can turn however many mortals into vampires you want, but due to the act of turning a new vampire, you can’t keep them as a companion. The best and most true companionship is in finding other vampires who were turned by others. There are many reasons for finding a prefabricated vampire to love, but a major one is that the telepathic connection with them will still be possible!
*At least one fic writer, @vampchronfic, has L/L finding ways to chip away and even dissolve this limitation, and it’s bound them closer together, unlike any other ship in VC.
Why is it that when couples make a new human life, it’s ‘beautiful’ and ‘miraculous,’ but when I make a new human life alone in my basement, it’s ‘a crime against nature’ and ‘morally abhorrent’?
That doesn’t mean the vampires hate New Mexico, lol, even tho I don’t remember it being mentioned anywhere else in canon other than QOTD, either.
The only reference I see of New Mexico in QOTD is a very passing mention by a mortal (a bad guy) who’s dying: “Paralyzed, couldn’t move, thinking he was a kid again on a farm or something in New Mexico. Just baby talk.”
That wasn’t unfavorable (being mentioned by a dying bad guy doesn’t mean all ppl who had a childhood there will turn out to be bad guys), and doesn’t represent that the vampires hate New Mexico.
^Here’s a gif of Claudia playing w/ her food bc it’s similar to the scene in QOTD, someone else is playing w/ their food a little.
Keep in mind that there’s a lot of canon that takes place in other places and time periods. New Mexico was admitted into the US in 1912 [so sayeth Wiki] idk if there were vampires there before or after that, but there may have been restrictions about crossing the border before 1912. Also, travel for leisure is a relatively modern thing. In fact, Louis doesn’t mention any travel for leisure during IWTV, the three of them just stayed in New Orleans for 65 years? It’s possible.
Well a real live event would be fantastic, personally, I’d love to rent a theatre and do a screening of IWTV w/ any of the original main cast there to provide commentary during the movie or a Q&A after and that will never happen *sobs*
As far as doing a gift exchange here in tumblrland, that’s been done before and is more doable! Ppl often really love giving and receiving gifts for it, it’s a great opportunity to spread some VC fandom love and positivity and really, who doesn’t like getting gifts?
I should bring back Santa Lestat in November… those asks were pretty fun.
Last holiday season I co-modded the @vcsecretgifts exchange. It takes a lot of effort, mostly in trying to drum up enough interest, and then policing ppl to submit their assigned gifts (a few never did theirs, and I volunteered to fill in for one of these and still haven’t found the right inspiration to WRITE IT YET *facepalm*) I’ll ask the founder of that blog if they have the time/desire to do it w/ me again.
Is this something ppl would like to participate in?
Lestat can be like a big dumb puppy sometimes, and he also has selective hearing loss. OF COURSE SHE WANTED ANOTHER DOLL like of course she did. Did he consult w/ Louis first? No. No, he did not.
^ I did this last night but now that I know it’s @i-want-my-iwtv ‘s birthday I dedicate this trash musing to you, you wonderful person. ❤ Enjoy and incestuous vampire birthday laugh.
The fact that this book exists at all is too funny, but the VC version of it is… just… besides, Gabrielle “Ew Don’t Call Me ‘Mother’” de Lioncourt is partially at fault here okay???! And Lestat, your Oedipus is showing…
btw that’s Armand in the doorway… the real reason Lestat wouldn’t let him join them…
