frankenland:

@i-want-my-iwtv About the tattoo ask, I asked this question a while ago and this was Anne’s answer.

Oooh, thanks @frankenland!

Much appreciated. @wavesofwood, check this out. If we accept the author’s words as canon, we can say definitively:

1) Tattoos that the vampire tries to get AFTER they have been turned: Will vanish in 24 hrs.

2)

Tattoos that the vampire has BEFORE they have been turned: Will fade/lighten/change (see comment from @monstersinthecosmos on my post about this,

below)

@monstersinthecosmos adds:

i remember Anne said on FB once that someone’s tattoos would probably go really light and lacey/elegant looking after they’re turned, but remain in a way that looks ~ethereal~ lolol

^I’d have to find the post but I would imagine that AR means that the tattoo will “go really light and lacey/elegant looking” over time, not at the moment of turning, but it could be interpreted either way.

It would have been nice if she had answered your whole question and included whether any of them DO have tattoos, and maybe

accepted your compliment graciously, but OH WELL.

Ok but tattoos and vampires?? If you were to have a tattoo and get turned into a vampire, do u think it would fade since the vampiric blood supposedly erases all the “imperfections” or not?

Hello! This question, actually, is much deeper than it appears.

I’ve addressed it physiologically before, and originally, I was going to link you to that privately, but then I remembered a tattoo from years back (under the cut bc it was under a cut on the person’s blog), and it inspired me to make further considerations, more in the context of the purpose of a tattoo. In that secondary but equally meaningful aspect, I haven’t addressed what the tattoos represent to the ones who wear them, and why the erasing of a tattoo could be devastating to a fledgling vampire. (As always, this response is only about Ricean vampires.)

I’m answering this with good intentions, just the exploration of this deeper question and context. I’m not trained in the issues that I will touch on, but these are just my thoughts on the topic at hand, and not meant to be authoritative in any way, shape, or form. I invite anyone who has gotten tattoos or is thinking about getting them to share your thoughts on this, to get some more perspective.

[^X is @page537‘s VC quote tattoo!]

PART I: The physical aspect:
I don’t remember any tattooed Ricean vampires in canon, so I can’t say definitively whether the tattoo ink would remain or not :- This may be a question for the author. For our purposes:

On the one hand, as @thebibliosphere added to one of my posts: “I treat vampires as just very long living humans, which means even tattoos fade over time as the skin cells regenerate.” [X] I’m inclined to agree. I also think a tattoo could be removed from vampire flesh “by scraping/cutting/etc. off the tattooed skin and letting it regenerate to its natural state).” as @skeletalroses put it [X].

HOWEVER! On the other hand, the ink could be flushed out along with anything else on the body that is incompatible* to the vampiric parasite at the time that the vampire is turned (*“incompatible” meaning “unnecessary,” like the bodily organs for solid food breakdown or whatever else that are flushed out). Is a tattoo, or the ink thereof, an “imperfection” also an “incompatible” thing? I don’t know. So would the vampiric blood erase a tattoo? It’s possible!

– PART II –

People get tattoos for a wide variety of reasons, here’s just a few (and the first three I’m asterisking & bolding bc I feel like those are the reasons that I didn’t address properly before, and I want to try do so, albeit in a limited way, further down).

  • *To change something about themselves bc they are unable to change a larger aspect of their lives, possibly they want to transition from one gender to another, and are not financially able to do so,
  • *They are in the process of changing

a larger aspect of their lives, maybe they are gathering more information about the processes in order to make informed decisions about transitioning, or are taking HRT and gradually seeing the changes, or they have a specific quote/motto that is helping them through the change,

  • *To show that they have MADE a change about themselves and want to commemorate/celebrate that change, maybe they transitioned genders, or accomplished a life-long goal,
  • For protection/good fortune/etc., – my cousin has a viking rune of protection

on his sternum, Angelina Jolie has a number of tattoos for blessings and other reasons,

  • To be part of a group – symbols that indicate allegiance to a group or religion,
  • To advertise one’s interests – like getting a Superman logo might draw other fans of the character to you and strike up a friendship or more,
  • (Some ppl do get tatts purely bc they’re aesthetically pleasing)
  •  Etc….

Those first three are my focus right now, and I have not undergone a life change of that magnitude so I do not wish to offend anyone by presenting any misinformation.

But I can speculate that it is a deeply meaningful body modification. In some cases, it’s the only body modification that can be made and it has tremendous value to the person who chooses to have it. On a related note, when ppl ask about vampires and hair dye, I think this may be a similar kind of body modification, something that one can do if they are unable to do the larger desired change.

>>So a mortal gets a tattoo, or several, that help them feel like they’ve made at least that change to their bodies, and it helps them, whether it’s for a change desired, a change accomplished, or a change-in-progress.

  1. If that mark is erased when they become a vampire, what does that mean about the change that the tattoo was about?
  2. Is it erasing the change

    desired/accomplished/-in-progress?

  3. If that mark is erased, is being a vampire a sufficient replacement?
  4. What are the consequences of erasing that mark as it pertains to the change desired/accomplished/-in-progress?
  5. What emotional impact would it have on the vampire that that mark was erased?

So when this question is asked, it’s also about the fact that when someone chooses to get a tattoo for the sake of representing CHANGE, will that representation of change last into eternity? Would the mortal WANT it to? Would they be devastated that it was gone? These are all considerations and I don’t have the answers.

On the other hand, and on a lighter note,

  1. Does this mortal really want that conversation-starter of a Superman logo on their thigh for ETERNITY?
  2. How frustrating would that be to be stuck with something they’ve decided they DON’T like and/or support anymore, and keep getting asked about it repeatedly??
  3. It could make for some intriguing vampire emotional exploration. #NO REGERTS indeed.

Again, a tattoo that I remembered from years back, which inspired me to make these considerations, is under the cut bc it was under a cut on the person’s blog originally.

Let’s talk about vampires and bubble gum. Can they have it? Do you think they like it? I bet Lestat discovers it and starts trying like EVERY flavor (though he has certain favorites).

I think vampires would be curious about it, even if it existed during their lifetime (definitely for Daniel), there are new flavors, shapes and sizes of gum these days!

image

[^Quote from @goddessofidiocy]

As far as actually enjoying gum, idk, I’m of two minds with that. On the one hand, I like the idea of Lestat doing it just to irritate ppl, blowing big bubbles, and popping them while someone is trying to talk *cough* Armand *cough* I’m sure he would find all the packaging/tins and

gumball machines graphically appealing.

On the other hand, I had an ask about whether they’d wear chapstick and I wrote:

The flavored makeup would probably not taste good to them like it does for us since those flavors are meant to simulate actual food; cherry chapstick – which I personally love bc it gives you tint and a pleasant smell/taste – would probably taste like a smear of motor oil to a Ricean vampire.

Soooo… I feel like gum, also meant to taste like food to mortals, could taste inedible to them. Altho even if it tasted bad, I think Lestat would still chew it just to be annoying #Actual 7 yr old.

I’m going to be roleplaying with someone and they want to do a mother/son relationship, like not in the usual way. Like, what is the ACTUAL relationship between Gabrielle and Lestat? What is it really? I want to do a thread, but I don’t want to trigger anyone or make it look all grim and incestuous. And I sincerely apologize if I’ve offended you by asking the question. I just dunno.

[By the way, I usually answer things with a relevant fanart/image/gif, but in this case, I think it’s too serious a topic for that.]

  • “And I sincerely apologize if I’ve offended you by asking the question.”

No offense taken, it’s a fair question!

I am a little wary that this is a bait set out by those who see things in RP/fiction as “promoting” something in real life. A bait set to invite the kind of anti-shippers who are looking for a way to tear me down regardless of how I respond, when all I ever want to promote is:

The 3 Laws of Fandom.

(And I’ll quote a relevant piece of it from @ozhawkauthor, but please read the whole post):

“Much (though not all) fandom is about shipping. There are as many possible ships as there are fans, maybe more. You may have an OTP (One True Pairing), you may have a NOTP, that pairing that makes you want to barf at the very thought of its existence.

It’s not up to you to police ships or to determine what other people are allowed to ship. Just because you find that one particular ship problematic or disgusting, does not mean that other people are not allowed to explore its possibilities in their fanworks.

You are free to create contrarian content, to write meta about why a particular ship is repulsive, to discuss it endlessly on your private blog with like-minded persons.

It is not appropriate to harass creators about their ships, it is not appropriate to demand they do not create any more fanworks about those ships, or that they create fanwork only in a manner that you deem appropriate.

These three laws add up to the following:

You are not paying for fanworks content, and you have no rights to it other than to choose to consume it, or not consume it. If you do choose to consume it, do not then attack the creator if it wasn’t to your taste. That’s the height of bad manners.

Be courteous in fandom. It makes the whole experience better for all of us.”

I want to make it very clear that I’m answering this as someone who supports exploring dark themes and taboo topics in fiction/RP. As long as you are not violating real living person’s rights, or invading any real living person’s space*, then you are doing nothing wrong.

I’ve been blocked. I try to tag for things that can be triggering/upsetting to others, but I will not self-censor to appease everyone, so I absolutely support ppl unfollowing/blocking me if what I post makes them uncomfortable.

*Posting your fic/RP with the appropriate warning tags is a form of respecting others’ space and rights. If they don’t like your writing, they can block you, too. Their dashboard is their responsibility.

  • “I want to do a thread, but I don’t want to trigger anyone or make it look all grim and incestuous.”

I think grim and incestuous could be very interesting to explore; not every fic/RP can be a fluffy Coffee Shop AU!

Re: Concern about triggering anyone, I’ll repeat myself, it is everyone’s responsibility to curate their own fandom experience and as long as you are tagging and putting content under cuts, it is their responsibility to protect themselves. If they are incapable of that, then they should ask a trusted person to monitor their internet use.

People are triggered by many things, not just taboo and darker themed writing. This person’s triggers are Jello, Popsicles, Soup Broth, please read it! And to quote from that post, “a lot of ‘activists’ on tumblr aren’t looking to actually help anyone or make anything better: they’re sadists cruising for new victims.”

TL; DR: Anon, do what you and your partner are comfortable doing.** If RPing it as a ship squicks you both out, don’t do it. If Rping it as a ship is exciting to you both and you want to explore that taboo, go for it! Just be sure to tag it with the right warnings, and add cuts so that ppl will be protected from content they may not want to see. You can also RP privately however you like, there is no rule that says RP must be done publicly.

**If your RP partner is pressuring you to RP something you are uncomfortable with, then I would suggest not RPing that with them, and similarly, if you are pressuring your RP partner to RP something they are uncomfortable with, I would suggest not pressuring them into it.

Hit the jump for my response, cut for length, and discussion about possible incest between fictional characters.

  • “I’m going to be roleplaying with someone and they want to do a mother/son relationship, like not in the usual way.”

Is there a “usual way” to RP? If you’re suggesting in the ship way, it is something I’m sure exists.

Ppl RP with canon in mind, or without it.

  • “Like, what is the ACTUAL relationship between Gabrielle and Lestat? What is it really?”

That is a question with a ton of landmines, so I’m not going to say that they are definitely a ship or definitely not, it’s up to the individual reader/RPer to decide based on their reading of canon, or diverge from canon and write the characters however they see fit. This kind of exploration is one of many ways to engage with the characters and I see nothing wrong with canon-compliant or not canon-compliant writing, either way.

Personally, I can see both sides of the argument.

>>Not as a ship: There are some who see them purely as a mother and a son, and DEFINITELY nothing more. She does come to his rescue at the rock concert (how did she know to go to him? She has telepathy, but being his fledgling, she cannot read Lestat’s mind; she could have picked up the warnings from other vampires, or Louis might have contacted her), there are several times in canon when she asserts herself in an authoritative manner. She’s protective of him when he’s in a coma, and she slaps some sense into him when necessary. All these things can be filed under “motherly.”

It’s easy to not ship them, so I don’t really need to provide further canon evidence, they are, biologically, mother and son! There’s nothing more to add to that.

>>As a ship, Unpopular Opinion: one could argue that they can be shipped, because:

A) He becomes her maker, which changes their relationship to him being more of the “parent.”

– During the initial phase of Lestat turning Gabrielle in TVL, as he’s taking her life, he says she’s no longer his mother (to be fair, this is the kind of intimacy a vampire feels when feeding on anyone, but still, worth mentioning):

My
knowledge dimmed and flickered and there was no mother anymore,
no petty need and petty terror; she was simply who she was. She was
Gabrielle.

– Then, once she’s turned, she insists on being called by her name instead of “Mother,” so some take that as proof that she doesn’t see herself as being his mother anymore, in the mortal sense of the word.

B) The act of making a vampire is extremely intimate, it has been compared to childbirth. It’s the most intimate act a vampire can share with anyone. I believe in fanon that it creates a physiological bond between maker and fledgling, so one could extrapolate to say that the act itself could create a ship.

Note: In most maker/fledgling relationships, there is some assumption that turning the fledgling is done to bind maker and fledgling as a ship; essentially making the fledgling into a companion for the maker and the maker into a companion for the fledgling. In this case, Lestat turned Gabrielle in order to save her life, not knowing if he would even survive the act, so I don’t think this was a factor here, neither of them necessarily intending to be in a relationship together, but the physiological bond discussed above would still be a possibility.

Also worth mentioning is that he asks for her consent, as he had not been asked for consent himself, and the question is very clear:

No words again, just the silent thrust of it, and the question, more immense than could ever be put into words, Do you want to come with me now? DO YOU WANT TO COME WITH ME INTO THIS NOW? I hide nothing from you, not my ignorance, not my fear, not the simple terror that if I try I might fail. I do not even know if it is mine to give more than once, or what is the price of giving it, but I will risk this for you, and we will discover it together, whatever the mystery and the terror, just as I’ve discovered alone all else. With her whole
being she said Yes.

^This could be construed as him wanting her for a companion and her agreeing to it.

C) LET’S TALK ABOUT SEX. This is a point of debate for many fans, whether the Ricean vampires can have penetrative sex. In my opinion, in canon they cannot, and while penetrative sex is NOT A REQUIREMENT to a relationship (there are relationships where there is no penetrative sex and they are no less valid than those which do have it, in my opinion), the incestuous aspect of a Lestat/Gabrielle ship is alot less squicky for me knowing that they aren’t able to literally bone in the mortal way. Some would argue that the bloodsharing is more intimate than penetrative sex, and that’s fine, but still, being unable to literally bone is just so much less squicky, in my opinion. But ppl made fanart of essentially that and it was still very funny, to me!

Call it what you will, but the first bloodkiss shared in canon is between Lestat and Gabrielle on the night she is turned.

^^^ALL THAT SAID, I wouldn’t shoot anyone down who ships it, they are both adult fictional characters. One could argue that there is some canon evidence to support it, but canon evidence is unnecessary.

Again, Anon, do what you and your partner are comfortable doing. If RPing it as a ship squicks you both out, don’t do it. If Rping it as a ship is exciting to you both and you want to explore that taboo, go for it! Just be sure to tag it with the right warnings, and add cuts so that ppl will be protected from content they may not want to see. You can also RP privately however you like, there is no rule that says RP must be done publicly.

If your RP partner is pressuring you to RP something you are uncomfortable with, then I would suggest not RPing with them, and similarly, if you are pressuring your RP partner to RP something they are uncomfortable with, I would suggest not pressuring them into it.

When vampires suck dick do they have to resist the urge todo drain the blood from the dick ???? (random question . i see over there )

Hey it’s a valid question, I getcha >;} I’ve thought about it, too!

image

[^X a piece of my commissioned art drawn by the awesomeness that is @riwox, and there is a panel in it w/ oral action, but it’s just licking.]

Look at this comic that @remarried did, too, btw, along these lines, which I can’t bear to chop even a piece out of bc it has to be seen in FULL to be enjoyed!

IDK about other vampires but as far as VC goes, vampire dicks don’t get erect (there is alot of debate about this)(and I love writing/reading fanfic and seeing fanart in which their dicks DO work!)(but in canon, from my reading, I would say that they do not) so it’s kind of a moot point. But I do think they would still involve it in intimacy if they wanted to. See this post by @amadeo-child-of-the-renaissance w/ comments from @gairid. #Your headcanon may vary on this.

IN CANON: I don’t think that either vampire/vampire or vampire/mortal blowjobs are addressed in canon. I believe that anything that can be bitten can be an erogenous zone, and would enjoy being bitten anywhere, and they could bite mortal’s boners. Now I have this image of a dick just deflating on being drained of blood lol…

How is there very much space in the mouth with those fangs there, tho? Especially if you buy that they may have other sharpened teeth than just the canines. Can they even take a dick in their mouths w/o cutting it? It’s fun to read in fanfic, but would there really be enough space for it? I’m not sure!

I would think that vampires would be limited in their blowjob abilities, unless the vampire’s mouth is big and/or the dick in question is relatively smaller XD

TL;DR: I do think vampires have to resist the urge to suck all the blood out of a dick during a blowjob, if they want that dick to keep working.

@thebibliosphere, help me out?

//You know… physically speaking vampires would still be able to be on the receiving end of sex. It’s not like their orifices were supernaturally disappearing after being turned…
A functioning member is not the only thing that grants a man the ability to have sex.

Some vampires say the blood acts as a sort of substitute. That they simply don’t feel the need to have sex in a physical way. Which is fine. To each their own.

But I sometimes I can’t help but wonder if it is really necessary to view the (IMHO obviously remaining) anatomical ability of vampires to still have sex in some form as a thing that is somehow suddenly so impossible that it borders on the absurd to even think of it. Some seem to be rather aggressive about it-

I’m in agreement – Blood-sharing is the highest form of intimacy between vampires but why should that include other forms of intimacy and closeness, especially with creatures who are so attuned to physical sensation? We were told in the Story of the Twins that the spirit Amel (and this was known even before we learned AR’s take on what Amel really was/is in PL and PLRoA), was starved for the sensations of the physical, driven to wanting physical experience to the point that it actively sought contact, drew blood from human in minuscule amounts and then ultimately assumed a symbiotic relationship with Akasha’s body as she died, creating a new sort of being altogether.

It was about sensation, about experiencing all that was possible to experience. Vampire senses are enhanced upon their change from mortal to immortal and those enhancements continue throughout the existence of the vampire. That’s my verbose way of saying –why deny the pleasures of the flesh (unless that is one’s choice rather than an impossibility)?

And if the vampire embarks on a relationship with a mortal (probably not advisable, but arguable inevitable with some personalities) certainly there is nothing to prevent the vampire from pleasuring the mortal or even taking pleasure from that moral. In addition, the mind gift would likely have uses as an ehhancement.

Canonically, AR began with the idea that vampires did not have sex, but even that had exceptions(Marius and Pandora, for instance) after time had passed. It was  described as less than satsfying. Many -most, actually- physiological details are left ambiguous, so who is to say what is functional or not.

Fanfic, though…it goes anywhere the imaginations of the authors want to take it. Some prefer to stick to canon, others, not so much.  There are as many variations as can be imagined and they can and do change with the levels of interest each author might want to express/explore.  I don’t see either way why it would be impossible, only that the pull of blood-drinking might be al that some of them want.  Everyone’s mileage vary on the subject, of course.

Hello! I’m looking for an IWTV clip on youtube, and I can’t find it. Maybe another VC fan can? / It’s a behind the scenes clip, showing a “robot” that was used to feign Lestat’s death when Claudia slit his throat. The “robot” doesn’t do much other than rise up and down a bit. It’s a simple little clip but I can’t find it anywhere. Help?

Voilà! It’s from the original IWTV DVD, In the Shadow of the Vampire: Making of the Vampire.

(^Download it bc you never know when the original poster might take it down.)

I’ve always loved this clip and the explanation behind it. WHY CANT WE HAVE MORE OF THIS *sigh*

Fun Vampire Fact; the reason that Vampires traditionally cannot see their reflections in a mirror is because mirrors used to be backed with a reflective layer of silver — which, as the metal of purity, would not ‘interact’ with Vampires, who are the Devil’s work.

However, modern mirrors have used aluminum as their reflective backing for many years now — and aluminum is not a ‘picky’ metal at all. So Vampires are able to see their reflections in modern mirrors.

All I can think about is a vampire used to not seeing their reflection in mirrors for centuries, and one day they are just walking along and unknowingly pass a mirror backed with aluminum and THEY NEARLY SHIT THEMSELVES.
