Who’s your favorite character and why?

It changes over time, I have a place in my heart for all the main characters from earlier canon (mainly books 1-5).

My gateway character was Claudia, definitely my fave when I first read IWTV when I was 11. I could relate to her frustration at not being taken seriously as an adult. She was just the perfect mix of sweetness and icy screamy-ness and had Louis wrapped around her little finger (WHICH btw, I saw as a purely platonic relationship).

Of course I loved Louis after her. How could I not? For his dignified manner, his high tolerance for bullshit, his love for books, his ability to hold back, and his ability to break out a can of fiery whoopass when it’s called for. For his frayed sweaters and how he doesn’t really care about fashion but how good he looks when he lets Lestat or Claudia play dress up with him. Because he probably smells like beeswax candles and jasmine.

He’s also very pretty and his hair feels like silk.

… All that said, Lestat was my real spirit animal in adolescence, and he’s the one that I keep coming back to as my true fave.

Lestat was someone I needed as I confronted the usual bullying in school, the usual seeking my own way into this world and the obstacles that go along with that. He taught me so many things. Most importantly, to have faith in yourself and not be afraid to try new things, meet new ppl. Some ppl will reject you just for being new. Some may reject you because you don’t have good chemistry with them. That’s all fine. You might become very close with some, and fail each other in some way, or just end up growing apart. It happens.

How could I not love him with this combination (and more!) of character traits: Charismatic, mixing silly with sinister, mysteriously hinting at a rich and traumatic backstory in IWTV (which we definitely got later), and of course, lastly, pretty damn good-looking.

And he does make mistakes, tons of them! If you really read the books, that’s where he lays out his mistakes and apologizes in the way he’s better able to do than verbally.

I’ve always loved mean characters, antagonists, monsters… those who were written off as “just mean,” “just evil,” or “just crazy,” these are the ones I want to know more about. Why are they this way? Is this a shield they put up to protect themselves from further hurt?

My grandmother was like this. I broke through her tough exterior and found a kindred spirit. She’s gone now, and I think my radical empathy for antagonists is kind of a search to find her in other ppl, fictional and real alike.

Lestat, care to give us 5 fun facts about you?

♛You want fun facts? Fun facts… mon dieu, what haven’t I told you about myself in all these books? Minutiae I suppose. Or what I consider to be so.

image

1. I have a coffee-colored birthmark on my lower abs, on the left, near my Adonis muscle, which can be seen just above the waistline of low-rise jeans. My mother has an identical mark on the opposite side, a mirror reflection of mine. It was something she and I had some kind of inside joke about when I was a small child, but I can’t for the life of me remember the punchline. It would send us both into the kind of laughter that makes your face hurt.

2. Oh! This is worth telling: I discovered sometime in the 90’s that we can be tattooed, but that the tattoo will fade away entirely during the Deathsleep. Daniel may have been involved. Of course we decided that I absolutely had to get a large tattoo across my chest that read, “Property of Louis” in huge black calligraphic lettering, just to see Louis’ reaction. When I spread open my shirt to reveal the work of art, every drop of blood drained from his face!

He was frozen in that special moment before the judgment begins. It was a sight to behold. Instead of lay in with the judgment as usual, he actually shifted into damage control, terrified it would last forever, and immediately started looking into laser-removal treatments! He fell asleep at the computer that morning and had to be carried safely to bed.

How relieved was he when my branding had disappeared by the following night? After some heavy physical punishment to my person, he treated me very well for the entire night. How so? Read between the lines, mes petits.

3. I do have taste preferences with blood. For the appetizer, as you know, I like it young and fresh, and I like to get the victim fairly emotionally stimulated because it adds spice. Women especially, for the more delicate package, too, and all the softness. For the main course, older is better, and angry, preferably. A touch of fear is good. Adrenaline makes older blood that much richer. Men, usually, the struggling muscles feels so very soothing.

4. When I’m not devising a scheme to drive him crazy, I leave Louis post-it love notes hidden in various places where he’s sure to find them. Yes, I do that! I am sickeningly romantic. Tactically romantic; those notes tend to plead my case better than I can when we’re deeply embroiled in a fight.

5. I may have ordered custom-made fangs for a special precious friend of mine, molded off of my own. And I might tell you more about that another time… if you beg properly.

i absolutely love you and this page and i have a question i know that vampires dont smoke but what does lestat think about smoking and cigarettes?

Thank you so much! And I love YOU, random citizen ;D

Re: Cigarettes:

image

Lestat quite enjoys smoking.

He likes to do it to pester Louis, who finds cigarette smoke distasteful. Lestat also does it for the oral fixation aspect. It calms him to have a cigarette to fidget with, and it gives him a reason to carry a cool lighter around.

Louis dislikes smoking bc he has a much stronger sense of smell. The Scent Gift, if you will and yet, he doesn’t mind sitting around in sewers in the movie… maybe he’s punishing himself extra when he was doing that…

Also:

  • Lestat has perfected the art of smoke-rings, too.
  • Cloves are also something Lestat likes, for their scent.
  • You didn’t ask this specifically but I was thinking about it: marijuana and other smoked drugs have to be decanted in the blood of their victims for it to have any effect on them, but that doesn’t apply to cancer. Conveniently, vampire physiology setup rejects tumorous growths but accepts hallucinogenics!

Lestat + Louis + strip poker = GOLD

#Headcanon accepted.

Do you have a tag for VC facts?

Yes and No!

image

Lemme just explain a thing real quick tho first, there are differnt types of VC “facts,” and you might find something of what you’re looking for here anyway:

  • Canon facts – facts explicitly stated in canon, like that Daniel’s eyes are violet, or Claudia’s birthday is September 29.
  • Authorial facts – facts not explicitly stated in canon but AR gave us, like that Louis’ birthday is October 9 and Lestat’s birthday is November 7. Some fandom ppl accept these into their own headcanon and some ppl do not.
  • Fanon “facts” – “facts,” or rather, info and stories that some fandom ppl have accepted into their headcanon that was generated in fanfic or fanworks, or wherever, like the fact that the eighth de Lioncourt was a girl.
  • headcanon – what individual fans believe as true facts, which might be an original idea or from one of the above categories.

^SO WITH ALL THAT IN MIND, here are some tags* where you might find any combination of those things:

*and unfortunately (or really, fortunately, in my opinion), some other fandoms are mixed into my tags because as pure as I try to keep this, other media/ideas/fandoms/etc. have found their way onto this blog bc of reasons. Good reasons.

I’ve seen some post about Rose Lioncourt, isn’t she like Lestat’s adopted daughter or something?

Yes, she is “like Lestat’s adopted daughter or something.” That’s probably the best description of her!

image

^She looks smtg like this: Flora and the Zephyrs [detail] by John William Waterhouse. [X]

My headcanon for kid!Rose:

image

^This smile, this is what Uncle Lestan would do just about anything for! Perform whole soliloquys while doing handstands, pretend the floor is lava, make silly noises, funny faces, anything. ❤ (This has nothing to do w/ her being Tom Cruise’s daughter; really! Physically, she’s my kid!Rose headcanon)

Spoilers ahead.

I don’t remember her childhood story too well, tagging @roselioncourt for that, but I think it was a rough childhood before she was rescued? I pictured her as unhealthfully slender during that time. Lestat rescued her and brought her to live with her new parental figures (two ladies, her “Aunts,” not sure whether they were also romantically involved w/ each other), and he checked in on her every so often, paid for everything, bc he is a philanthropist and loves kids.

Rose knew him as “Uncle Lestan” until her crappy professor boyfriend informed her of the VC, and exploded at her w/ an unnecessary amount of rage bc he thought she was making it up that she considered Lestat to not only be TOTES REAL but basically her loving benefactor! HOW DARE SHE SUUGEST SUCH A THING. Why couldn’t she just be a sexual object for her possessive boyfriend, and only speak to agree with or flatter him?? HOW DARE SHE be a person with her own life and backstory?? Pffft. <– sarcasm.

ANYWAY she and Lestat’s biological son end up growing close for shared connection to Lestat, and bc our series needed a het YA Twilight couple apparently. Eventually she becomes Lestat’s “real” daughter when her Dark Gift reception is poor and he has to step in and perform it properly bc of course he had to do it himself, “if you want smtg done right, gotta do it yourself.”

Who is Armand hanging around with these days? I he happy? What is he up to? I haven’t read Prince Lestat yet, and I’m curious.

It’s not in Armand’s nature to be simply happy. He has known joy and a sense of belonging at various points in his life; he’s even been in love. Currently he feels a sense of peace in being needed by those he spends time with.

Whether you ship Daniel/Marius or Daniel/Armand, I think Armand spends time with both Daniel and Marius; and feels loved to some extent by the whole coven. Armand likes to pull different members for trips to the galleries or shopping, but his favorite thing is lazing about the house playing chess with Louis or having a lively debate with David on art history, architecture being a favorite topic.

Occasionally he hunts with Lestat, where they can both feel a little more relaxed, away from the scrutiny of others (who actually encourage the friction w/o meaning to do so, just bc they’re afraid it will happen and keep making furtive glances at Lestat and Armand to the point where they do sometimes crack under the pressure and pick a fight over nothing).

If you wanted Armand’s current vampire happenings re: Prince Lestat, which I struggle to accept as canon YES EVEN NOW over a year later i know get out ma faaace here ya go:

Light spoiling after the jump.

According to Prince Lestat, Armand was living in a gorgeous old building (which, of course, he spruced up to his exacting luxurious specifications) on the upper east side of NY w/ Louis, Sybelle and Benji. Eventually Antoine (the unnamed musician vampire from IWTV, Lestat’s alleged 5th fledgling who had gone unmentioned up until PL) arrived at their door and was welcomed by all.

Throughout the story of Prince Lestat, Armand does little other than be supportive of Lestat, in a way that almost seems obsequious. Not much really happens for Armand, he rides out the whole drama pretty unscathed.

So currently he is pretty content with things and enjoying the company of Sybelle and Benji, and whoever else wants to chill with him.

That Nicolas ask made me curious.. Do you have any headcanons about what any of the characters’ voices sound like?

That’s a really tough question! When I read the books I read them all in MY voice, which sounds like an 11 yr old girl’s. So that wouldn’t work.

Probably gonna get alot of disagreement on this and that’s fine, bc voice casting is even MORE subjective that acting casting but I’ll give it a shot anyway. Reblog w/ your own ideas, and try to include links to vids.

Lestat – His voice is actually not that low, bc he was turned at 20-21, but it gets higher-pitched when he raises his voice. Has that slightly ragged singer’s voice edge to it. Can do a wide range, though, can imitate voices, musical notes, animal sounds, etc. Usually to perturb others.

Lestat will go up to Armand and say something like, “Ooooh Marius, paint me like one of your Italian boysssss…” in Armand’s voice which is always amusing, whatever reaction he gets.

Other than Tom Cruise (bc he’d be the easy answer), I’m gonna go w/ Sebastian Bach in the 80’s. Or Ewan McGregor in Velvet Goldmine.

Hit the jump for more.

(I didn’t include PL characters for the sake of brevity)(You can add them in the comments)(I also didn’t find good vid examples for all of these, sorries)

Louis – A mellow, calming voice. He can silence a room with a concise and gentlemanly eloquent statement. In canon, it’s mentioned more than once that you can hear his French accent. He himself doesn’t notice it, of course, bc he’s Mr. Pointe du Lacking-Any-Vanity-Whatsoever. Louis Garrel would be a good pick.

Armand – I’ve always felt like the Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan was very Armand in his singing voice, he has all the anguish and beauty that is Armand. In his speaking voice, it’s soft, and you can hear something broken there, but it’s smooth, controlled.

Daniel – Has a slight vocal growl, like River Phoenix (Or maybe Aaron Tveit), and altho he has a relatively low voice, he’ll always sound like he’s 20 on the phone.

MariusMichael Fassbender, @sheepskeleton made me see it and I can’t unsee it. A commanding but gentle teacher’s voice.

David – As an old man, he had that perfect older Dad-vibe; comforting, ex-adventurer, wise, with more than a touch of charming sass. So Kurt Russell would be a good voice, but he needs the noticeable British accent.

post-TOBT David is David Gandy. He’s got the British voice, the charm, etc.! Young or old, David’s laugh is that old-man whiskey laugh, mostly air!

Gabrielle – She has a dignity about her and it comes through in her voice. Her laughter sparkles, but it’s rare. She has a very commanding Mom Voice, the kind where she can yell w/o raising her voice. Gonna go with fan favorite Charlize Theron. Or Nicole Kidman, or Michelle Pfeiffer, obviously, too.

BiancaScarlett Johansson. @everlastingporcelain has convinced me that Scarlett = Bianca and I can’t unsee/hear it. Sass, charm, vocal growl, wholesomeness, and an advanced maturity.

When you walk out in public who is more likely to look at other men and women? You or Louis? And if any of you do look what do you usually look at?

♛We both love to people-watch.

Now that I think of it, almost everything we do revolves around that. We go out to performances to watch people play music or act, we go to cafes to watch people argue and flirt with each other, we go to museums and galleries to watch people admire art and we look at the people depicted in the art. Louis and I both prefer portraiture to abstract art, but there is still something captivating and innately human about the pulsing color blocks of a huge Rothko or the confident brush strokes and warm sunlight suffusing Jim Monagle’s landscapes… But I’m getting off-track here.

You want to know superficially what we’re looking at, and which one of us, and why. Okay.

Louis and I greet the early evening with a good long walk, and I barely conceal my interest in people we pass by. I’ll nod at a beautiful tattooed genderfluid youth across the street, break away from Louis to drop some money in their battered guitar case as we go along. Joining up with Louis again, I’ll slip my arm around his waist where he’s stopped to watch someone closing up their jewelry shop, and find that he’s admiring their hands more than any of the gems.

In general though, I make a more obvious display that I’m looking, and Louis keeps it more to himself. He might lean over and whisper to me about someone who catches his eye. Louis appreciates the beauty of women over men, the way they’ve chosen to display – or not – their décolletage is of particular interest to him. When he takes the Little Drink, he’s almost always snaked his hand up to that tender area, subconsciously. Kneading it like a cat. It’s very arousing to see.

I’m intrigued by all ages, but older men, well, they’re my favorite.

Something about wisdom accrued over time, showing the signs of authentic living, the crow’s feet, the beards, the weathered skin, it all speaks of experience. I like to take them for a Little Drink to glimpse the depth of their souls. Am I looking for a father figure? I’ll leave that up to you to over-analyze.

This people-watching has changed over time. Vastly improved.

In the beginning, I could barely drag Louis out of the house to people-watch; he lived in a kind of terror that he would find someone’s gesture, their voice, so worthy of Life itself that I’d choose that very creature to strike down like the Devil incarnate, just to torture him. Absolutely not my intention. What he couldn’t understand at that time is that people-watching is one of the greatest pleasures we have, mortal or immortal, and not just as a buffet on parade. I tried to teach him that, but it’s something he finally absorbed when he had to set a good example for our daughter.

Back then, I steered us to derelict neighborhoods, looking for the worst among men, so that killing those kinds of people would ease his fragile conscience, but Louis’s gift is his curse in that he finds beauty to an even greater extent that I do, even in the most awful beings. The stench of rats on his breath at the time was proof enough of that.
